Red State Secession Would Be a Dream Come True for the Rest of America
By: Hrafnkell HaraldssonNov. 16th, 2012more from Hrafnkell Haraldsson

Think about it: All this talk about secession is literally a Dixie redux: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas.
They lost. Now they want out.
Who knew an already great election outcome could get even better?
An early Christmas?
It goes like this: Squeeze. Dump. Sigh of relief.
Some Texans have really gotten a chubby from this secession talk:
It’s no like there would not be benefits for the rest of us. Not only would we get rid of a bunch of hateful bigots (along the way, putting the Southern Poverty Law Center out of business) but we’d help the U.S. economy.
As we have pointed out here on PoliticusUSA frequently, it is the very states entertaining secessionist dreams who suck up our federal dollars, while those of us content to stay provide those dollars. It would be a big weight off all our chests – not to mention our collective psyches – to just let these people go.
Of course, they would want to continue their federal subsidies – which they loudly complain about – so in actuality, we would likely be no better off. As Media Matters point out, secession would create what the Washington Post’s Dana Milbank called a “Confederacy of Takers.”
It is enough to make you fall over laughing. I mean, we’ve seen some grotesque levels of absolute cluelessness from conservatives this Election Cycle but golly, do they stop to think anything out before they start throwing tantrums?
I think little kids actually do a better job with consequences.
But then – and tell me you feel me here – who can deny that the vision of a South drifting away on a sea of obscurity is not an attractive one? They could teach evolution and ignore global warming and generally fall prey to whatever rampant plagues come upon them, while they pray for deliverance.
Fires. Floods. Hurricanes. All sent from God.
I can’t imagine what cognitive dissonance would dictate as ocean levels rose and confronted their belief that God promised he would never flood us humans out again.
But it’s an entertaining image.
Of course, we would have to build a big wall. That goes without saying. We wouldn’t want these folks sneaking back across the border to, like Sarah Palin, enjoy our forbidden socialized medical care. We could have a moat- a suggestion of one of their own, after all – and fill it with crocodiles. Have to have an electrified fence.
Of course, after a generation or two, they might not be able to read the warning signs, and if they did, they would no longer believe in electricity in any case. They would think it was God striking them dead when they tried to climb over.
No. God doesn’t want you in the north.
Neither do we.
We would have to have citizen posses to round them up, no doubt. Maybe we could get some washed up movie stars to help out. Build a big tent city to keep them in. Don’t tell me you’re not familiar with it, Republicans. It was your idea. You thought it was a great idea when it was full of Mexicans.
And wars! How will a dream of endless war fare in a land without cash? Will the New Confederacy be able to field an army beyond bands of right-wing militias? Or will they perhaps privatize war as well?
What we have here is a bunch of angry white people who can’t live with the fact of a black president. Nobody cared how corrupt or incompetent George W. Bush was (and he was plenty of both) but you get a moderate Democrat in there, who just happens to be black, and suddenly DC is a nest of corruption, as this conservative blogger says.
WAIT … We can’t ALL secede, we need to remove Washington DC and it’s pestilence. All of DC AND the UN.
Oh, that’s right…the UN and their Soviet-era mind control devices. Yeah…we gotta do something about that. Has it occurred to anyone that if the Soviets had had mind-control devices the Cold War would have ended very differently, with Reagan licking Gorbachev’s boots?
This same blogger trumpeted a couple of days ago that “White House ‘secede’ petitions reach 675,000 signatures, 50-state participation.”
The U.S. population is on the order of 315 million. By my math, 675,000, which certainly sounds like an impressive number, is 13,500 people per state, or .002 percent of the population.
Yeah…I don’t see what’s to get so excited about.
The population of the Confederacy in 1860 was 9,103,332. If you take those 675,000 people and measure them against the 1860 population, you still get less than 10 percent of the population – hardly a mandate for secession.
Who do these people think they are kidding?
It’s a wet dream, the nocturnal emissions of racists unhappy that it’s 2012 rather than 1860 when they could have safely put uppity black folks in their place. Even Erick Erickson, the guy behind RedState, rejects the idea: “We have no plans to secede from the union. If you do, good luck with that, but this is not the place for you.”
And Tennessee’s governor, Bill Haslam said, “I don’t think we’ll be seceding.”
As conservative circle jerks go, this has been a particularly lurid one. They can dream. We can dream back. But you can’t secede from the Union.
We fought a war over that idea. The Good Guys won. Secession was defeated. Slavery abolished. The country moved forward. We will continue to move forward.
This is the past:
And this is America now and going forward:

With or without the Republicans’ participation.

I say if these secessionists really don’t want to be a part of America then they need to follow their own philosophy and begin the process of self-deportation. America would be a much better place without these haters.

I agree – self deportation is the answer. But first, they must pay down their share of the debt. Then, leave….the land stays with us!

Certainly would be cheaper considering the $$$ tax dollars that go to Red States disproportionate to what they contribute!
I think the ‘joe the plumber ‘ repub voter might have more of a problem than they think going forward.
If you look at the census you see that there is no designation for the identification of those that are Armenian, Iranian, non- African muslim–white, Persian, Lebanese, and all other categories that are white but NOT Eastern European…EXCEPT WHITE IDENTITY!
Hmmm..just wondering how that will impact the identity crisis the racist voting block of repubs!

Ridding America of the racists and theocrats would be a dream come true. Then all the attention could be focused on the corporatists and ending their domination of the people. Since the Constitution forbids secession, the only option for the malcontents is to emigrate to an island and form their own lily white theocracy.

Yes. Offer amnesty to those who wish to leave the new Confederacy, and send off those Northerners who wish to join the new Confederacy, then let them secede already.

We would have to have a humane immigration policy for minorities wishing to leave the South. We’d also need quick and helpful exit programs for white supremacists in Idaho etc. who want OUT of our part and into theirs. (Here’s your hat – what’s your hurry?)
No subsidies – after all it’s “Zozialiszt”. We would have to remind the folks below the divide that they gave UP federal supports, so all the money in Medicare and Social Security would be forfeited since we won’t be paying those, and no health care from us. Tough luck – your choice, you lose. No FEMA, no highways, no defense, no Coast Guard, no nothing. You’re out – you’re now truly on your own just as you claimed you desired.
Good-bye. We’d wish you good luck, but we don’t mean it. We will miss pecan pie, but that’s about it.

Any dish that uses pecans, you can substitute shagbark hickory (all pecans are hickories, but not all hickories are pecans).

Northern hickories have much thicker shells than domestic pecans. To open without shattering, soak them a little, then squeeze slowly in a bench vise.

If the South seceded from the Union, I would miss a lot more than just pecan pie. Despite my being born in the North, my family heritage is distinctly Southern.
However, if my people have to leave the South again because of this BS, we’ll do so. It won’t come to that though. All of these petitions are symbolic, but the sentiment behind them is very real and disappointing.
I can’t help but laugh at the petitioners in states that were never part of the Confederacy. From what I’m hearing, petitions have come all 50 states.
But, I’m saving my biggest laughs for petitioners in Kansas. Kansas was practically ground zero for the struggle over slavery and when I grew up there, historically-minded Kansans would glorify the famous (or infamous-depending on your view) abolitionist Jim Brown. A mural of Jim Brown can be seen at the state capitol building in Topeka. So, if these Kansan clowns, who clearly don’t give a crap about their state’s history, want to turn around and flip Jim Brown the bird (so be it). These clowns were probably just using their state’s history to hide their own racism anyway. Some of the most racist moments of my life took place in that state, so it doesn’t surprise me that there are a few Kansas kooks who want the entire state to join the Confederacy in 2012.

No one deserves to be driven from their house, their land, their state because certain troglodites make ugly noises, nor may the sovereign withdraw protection from its loyal citizens. If the secessionists act out beyond the bounds of the First Amendment, that’s what Leavenworth is for.

Nov. 16th, 2012 at 1:39 pm
That’s right.
It should be reminded (and this was indicated by this very article) that these petitioners do not speak for the citizens of their respective states (including those in the South). I reckon there are many white Southerners (despite any racial animosity they may feel towards people of color) who don’t want to go through this BS again. 150 years seems like a long time to us because we are just a young country. However, when compared to world history (in general), 150 years is a drop in the bucket.
The mere fact that there are still people who can’t let this go after the matter was settled in 1865 is proof that wounds are still fresh.

You know, there just isn’t any fixing stupid! These folks are in their own reality and they are miserable and want the rest of us to give them their way. We need to make sure that we continue to move America forward and do not vote in individuals that support the ideology of ignorance, racism, hate mongering, selfishness, non-education believers. These folks care for nothing but them selves and maybe their own. You cannot reason with them, so we must get to the polls and vote them out at every opportunity!

Alex, your point that “you can’t reason with them” is so on target. It applies most often to that species of human predators known as sociopaths.
Although ignorance may be the driving force for many, some of them qualify as “mini-sociopaths” who only think about themselves and want to believe they should have their way, at all times.
The “major sociopaths” are the leaders they follow, who think the world revolves around them and actually view themselves as superior despite all evidence to the contrary. These so-called leaders will not rescue their followers if they were drowning — yet the mini-sociopaths (some of whom might be redeemable human beings) are too gullible to see this truth.

As much as I use the term malignant narcissist in relation to (mostly, but not limited to) Romney and Palin, your term sociopath is just as, if not more sometimes, appropriate for this type of mental instability.
I think the one dislike to your comment may be a mistake.

You liberal bloggers are so funny. You write an article starting off with how great it would be if Texas seceded, but then you finish by talking about how secession will never happen. Why not?? On behalf of Texans — we don’t you, you don’t want us, so what’s stopping this from happening? This is like a bad marriage where everyone can see that the couple can’t get along anymore and should just break up, but one of them just can’t accept it because s/he knows they’re dependant on the other and doesn’t want to be alone. You all are the spouse that wants to stay stuck in the dysfunctional relationship. Don’t be that person. Let’s just agree that we gave this a good shot (150+ years worth) but it didn’t work out and we should both just move on. No hard feelings.

Secession would never happen because the politicians in these red states aren’t stupid. They know very well that they are getting more federal money than they are taking in. Even Rick Perry, who toyed with the idea in 2009, is now walking away from it.
Southern dependence on the North is even higher now than it was back in the 1800s. The idiots who concocted this scheme the first time were completely ignorant of this. They waged a war and lost. The idiots who are bringing up in 2012 are just as dumb.
Do they really want to give up their SSN and Medicare benefits? What about their federal subsidies or access to federal roads? These states get federal money and some still manage to have higher poverty states than their “blue” counterparts (who foot most of the bill. Do they honestly think they can do better on their own? If they do, they are bigger idiots than the Southern planters who tried this crap the first time.
And yes, Erik H, it was the Southern planters that wanted the South to secede. There was no popular mandate for Southern secession. How could there be? A huge chunk of the population were slaves. Another chunk were white women with no voting rights. So, the only other group that had any say in the matter were poor and middle white males. The planters did everything they could to convince these white men to vote for secession with racial propaganda. When the propaganda didn’t work, they would use voter intimidation. And when that didn’t work, they just flat out rigged elections. So, it’s rather ironic that modern white Southerners who keep saying “The South will raise again,” probably have ancestors who never wanted secession in the first place. But, their belief in a mythical South that never existed prevents them from admitting this.
And despite the racial animosity, this has not been a “bad marriage” at all for either the North or the South. If you took off your “States’ Rights” blindfold, you’d see that!

I too believe session will never happen because the politicians are too ego-centererd to let go of the chance of becoming PRESIDENT of the UNITED STATES.
Also, like a kid who loses are marbles and threatens to take his little red wagon and his marbles and go home and not play with you anymore.
If these “children” want to run away from home, let them go, but provision has to be made for those citizens in these states that do NOT want to succeed.

I’ve got news for the racist whites who would have the gall to think they should be in a position to enslave and dictate the lives of the black people: At least half of the black population (and maybe more) have IQs higher than these racists, so we’d have to be your slave master instead of the other way around.
Still interested in the proposition? I didn’t think so. White superiority is fiction. No race is better in all things, at all times. One will find a range of intelligence in people across racial groups.Grow up and get used to it. Living on Fantasy Island is not good for the soul.
So, perhaps it makes sense just to accept reality and learn to live in a diverse America where a black/biracial man is currently president.

Here’s the irony of this entire situation:
The South is pretty much in the same position it was before, during, and after the Civil War. Despite all of the advances our country has made in that time, the South still lags behind. So many of these red states who receive more federal money than they pay in have high levels of poverty. So, it’s clear that that federal money hadn’t trickled down to those who most need it.
And just like the privileged, arrogant Southern planters who concocted this ridiculous scheme the first time, the idiots calling for secession today are completely clueless about the economic consequences of their proposal. The North fought the Civil War with one hand tied behind its back due to the fact that ultimately, the South depended on the North economically. Today, the Southern dependence on the North is even worse and it’s due to their own policies and attitudes in their own states.
And if there’s any proof of racism being the main undercurrent here, it’s this. Where were all of these petitions when Clinton was President? Yeah, we had to deal with increased militia activity under his watch, but not anything like this.

If Texas wants to break away, they should have to buy out of the Union. Fortunate Son Bush just gave us a totally contrived Mortgage Banking Scam that made him and his friends very rich, but cost the Federal Reserve 41 Trillion Dollars (Money paid to stop a Global Economic Collapse when all of those reams of bad paper bankrupted banks and businesses overseas.
Since he was their President forced upon us, they should at least pay that 41 Trillion back to the other states before we grant them their independence.
Of course you know that Mexico will immediately seize Texas for past grievances, and we will smile.

Dear Red States:
We’re ticked off at your Neanderthal attitudes and politics and we’ve decided we’re leaving. We in Illinois intend to form our own country and we’re taking the other Blue States with us.
In case you aren’t aware that includes California, Hawaii, Oregon,Washington, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York and the rest of the Northeast. We believe this split will be beneficial to the nation and especially to the people of the new country of The Enlightened States of America (E.S.A).
To sum up briefly:You get Texas, Oklahoma and all the slave states. We get stem cell research and the best beaches. We get Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. You get Scott Desjarlais and Todd Akin.
We get the Statue of Liberty. You get OpryLand.
We get Intel and Microsoft. You get WorldCom.
We get Harvard (Princeton, Penn, Haverford, Colgate, U of R),. You get Ole’ Miss.
We get 85 percent of America’s venture capital and entrepreneurs.
You get Alabama.
We get two-thirds of the tax revenue. You get to make the red states pay
their fair share.
Since our aggregate divorce rate is 22 percent lower than the Christian
Coalition’s, we get a bunch of happy families. You get a bunch of single
moms.
With the Blue States in hand we will have firm control of 80% of the
country’s fresh water, more than 90% of the pineapple and lettuce, 92%
of the nation’s fresh fruit, 95% of America’s quality wines (you can
serve French wines at state dinners) 90% of all cheese, 90 percent of
the high tech industry, most of the US low sulfur coal, all living
redwoods, sequoias and condors, all the Ivy and Seven Sister schools
plus Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Cal Tech and MIT.
With the Red States you will have to cope with 88% of all obese
Americans and their projected health care costs, 92% of all US
mosquitoes, nearly 100% of the tornadoes, 90% of the hurricanes, 99% of
all Southern…

The theocratic, uneducated, superstitious, racist, hypocritical, dogmatic, fanatical people of our southernmost states are the reason why our nation is crumbling to pieces in an unending battle against selfishness, greed, indecency, scientific hinderance in all fields besides military prowess , and primitive thinking of all forms. 38% of those in the Red states believe Jonah was actually swallowed by a

I went to the White House petition website and looked at some of these petitions. Why are people signing petitions for states they don’t live in?
Why should a Michigan resident sign a petition for Georgia to secede from the Union? Shouldn’t be up to Georgia residents to make that decision? At least that’s the way it was when Georgia seceded in the 1860s….Oh, wait a minute. It turns out that Georgian politians rigged the secession vote because they knew a huge number of Georgians (especially in the Northern part of the state) didn’t want to secede in the first place. And guess what Georgians who want your state to secede? The overwhelming majority in your state would probably disagree with you (even more so than in 1861).
This is all a freakin’ farce. When these petitioners are willing to give up their SSN, Medicare, subsidies, federal roads, national security, and other benefits they get from the federal government, then they should be taken seriously. But, they won’t. It’s a pathetic symbolic gesture that displays more racial animosity than anything else. Despite what Erik H. believes, this has not be a bad marriage for either the North or the South. It’s just that some people just can’t accept the fact that a black man is now President of the United States of America. End of story!

Are you kidding me. Where are you getting your statistics from. New York and La alone have more people on food stamps and welfare than the entire red states combined. Have you visited those places. How about Chicago or Detroit or DC. Why do you think this is about race. I’m tired of the reverse racism trip. Obama is have white people come on. Colen Powell would be a better president. Obama is a liar so is Romney. But it seems like your trying to make this a race issue which it is not that’s what I find ignorant. Obama has done more to tear down our liberties than any other president has ever accomplished. The last great president that wasn’t on the payroll for overseas bankers was Kennedy. Look what that got him. People grow up most people don’t see color any more that’s in the past.

Talks of secession? This is the time when the concept of “self-deportation” is appropriate.
omomma
Nov. 19th, 2012 at 3:05 pm
“The Union Forever”! Anyone who signs a secession petition should lose their citizenship immediately. They can be issued a red card which would permit them to work, earn money, pay taxes, etc., but not vote, and would lose 7 years’ of eligibility for Social Security, although they would pay into the system while they were red-carded.
In 7 years they would be eligble to apply for citizenship. If they had been out of the country for more than 12 consecutive months during the 7 red-card years, they could be deported to the nation of their choice There they would wait another 7 years before having another opportunity to apply for a red card. Issuance of a new red card would signal the start of another 7 year period, at the end of which they could apply for citizenship.
Citizenship should not be taken for granted, nor should the Union be destroyed because of dimwits.

I wonder how many of these”white” citizens of the south, who are signing on to the “leave the U.S.”(mostly because of a black man being President)know that if, they have had a polio vacination, or any other vacination, understand that they are living with black cells in their blood.
A black women who was dying of cancer, whose cells lived, and kept on multiplying, is the soul reason we have these vacinations available .Her name: Henreetta locke, cells were taken from her, without her permission. These cells were the first cells that lived, and kept on living .They were so plentyfull, they were shipped all over the world, to labs, working on vacines.

I am a right-libertarian dissident in Florida and am opposed to Obama, statist-socialist big government and all leftism, and I am completely against this secessionist nonsense. We need to put the federal monster back in it’s cage but I think secession is treason and it baffles me hoe anyone on the libertarian right could support destroying America. We are the patriots! But to you on the left, your glee is misspent. What do you see now that petitions have come from citizens in every state? Your usual casting of all conservative dissent as racost os idiotic, as always. And without the patriotic red- staters America would be a castrated nation. Of course, many leftists want just that.

The great abolitionist, William Lloyd Garrison, advocated “Disunion” in the 1850s. His approach was “No Union With Slavery”. This was echoed by other abolitionists, including Ernestine L. Rose, who was both an abolitionist and early feminist (mentor to Susan B. Anthony). The South brought us slavery, lynching, and Jim Crow. It criticizes the “takers”, when that is exactly what it itself is. I say Let the South Secede-Better Late than Never!
