Romney Pulls a Palin and Claims Obama’s Using Bain to Kill Him
Tonight on CNN’s The Situation Room in an interview with Jim Acosta, attempting to deflect from his contradictory SEC filings and exit time at Bain, Romney, sounding a bit Nixonian, doubled down on his wife’s claim that all of this is Obama’s “Kill Romney” strategy.
Video clip of Romney parsing and spinning via CNN:
In between climbing on the persecution cross, Romney explained that he has done nothing wrong by misleading the voters on his Bain exit timing, and he spent time doubling down on his claim that he left in 1999.
Romney told Acosta, “There’s nothing wrong with being associated with Bain Capital, of course. But the truth is that I left any role at Bain Capital in February of 1999.”
Here is Romney whining about Obama and breaking put the kill Romney line:
Romney claimed that the Obama campaign saying he is either a crook or a liar is “an effort on the part of the president’s campaign to divert attention from the fact that the president has been a failure when it comes to reigniting the American economy.”
Romney accused Obama of “putting out information which is false and deceptive and dishonest” but he didn’t specifically accuse the Obama campaign of lying about his departure date. His campaign statement today also refused to deny the Obama campaign charge specifically.
The reason for that refusal is not that Romney is afraid to use the word lie, he used it just yesterday in the launch of a new ad campaign against Obama.
We covered Ann’s moment of “Kill Romney” perfidy here, and noted then that the 2011 Politico story was poorly sourced with an anonymous person who claimed to be “aligned with the White House”, which I suppose a janitor could say. Since that writing, the Obama campaign came out with a full rebuttal:
The reference to a “kill Romney” strategy stems from a thinly-sourced Politico story from August 2011, which anonymously quoted a supposedly Democratic strategist “aligned with the White House” who said the President’s campaign might have to go negative and “kill Romney.” This source—who, unsurprisingly, chose to remain unnamed—in no way represented the President’s campaign. As Obama for America National Press Secretary Ben LaBolt stated immediately, “Anyone purporting to hold a crystal ball for our strategy … does not speak for the campaign.”
President Obama never said any such thing, and they flatly deny that it represented their campaign. I tend to believe this, because my own experience working for the Obama campaign in 2008 showed me that he runs a tight ship. We were told in no uncertain terms that anyone who said anything negative about Sarah Palin or her family would no longer be volunteering for the campaign. If they were that strict in the field, it’s hard to picture them sloppy at the top.
At any rate, it’s rather desperate for Romney to attribute a thinly sourced quote to the President himself in order to dodge the very real trouble he got himself into with his slick “I left Bain but I was CEO, President, and sole shareholder” routine.
Mitt Romney is in a world of hurt, and the only way he could climb out was to seek refuge in being persecuted. We’ve seen this routine before.
Perhaps Romney forgot a few things in his rush to the cross:
Romney touted his staff’s rude heckling of the President’s campaign, saying, “What’s sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.” Unfortunately, that includes such childish antics as blowing bubbles at President Obama’s advisors during a press conference and repeatedly using the campaign bus to circle Obama events and honk loudly.
Romney’s first ad of the season was panned as “misleading,” “deceptive,” “deceitful,” “untruthful,” “demonstrably false,” and “a lie.” The ad’s most devastating line—President Obama saying, ‘If we keep talking about the economy, we’re going to lose’—was taken wildly out of context. In fact, the President uttered the line in 2008, when he was referring to something that an aide to his then-opponent, Senator John McCain of Arizona, had said in reference to the McCain campaign—not Mr. Obama. And even though Romney’s campaign admitted they took the President out of context, they argued that it was “intentional.”
Even Republicans said they’d like to see less character attacks and more policy suggestions from the Romney campaign. “The Romney campaign is tilted too heavily toward biography and not nearly enough toward ideas,” said Karl Rove. “You have to campaign to govern, not just to win,” said Gov. Mitch Daniels. And as Republican strategist Nelson Warfield noted, “It’s clear the negative ads are what’s keeping this guy alive.”
Playing the vaguely paranoid victim only goes so far, even for a Republican.
Mitt Romney needs to release his tax returns and let the voters decide what they think about his record. He likes to talk about his record, and paint the narrative himself, but he doesn’t seem to trust the people enough to give us the facts and let us decide. The Obama campaign never said anything about killing Mitt, but Romney sounds as if he’s falling victim to the same paranoia that plagued Nixon.
Just because people want straight answers doesn’t mean that they are out to get you. To interpret asking for the facts and truth as persecution is telling.

I predicted that no new information would be offered by Romney and that he’d keep pushing the already debunked lies, and I was right. This is not going to die as easily as Romney wants it to and saying that PBO wants to “kill” him obviously refers to the president’s plan to make sure that the Romneys don’t move into 1600 Pennsylvania Ave on January 20, 2013. A writer at The American Conservative asks and answers a very important question in a recent post: “The Loathsome Romney Candidacy: How Did We Get Here?”

I followed your link. It was a remarkable article, and though some of the comments offered were from vicious Randians, most were eloquent and well-thought out. For the sake of such true conservatives as well as the rest of us, the Friedmanist/Dominionist coalition cannot be permitted to take over. Only that way will thinking conservatives have a chance at restoring the Republican Party to what it once was, or to establish another right/center party to take its traditional place in the political spectrum.

Something of a paradox, WillMitt singing from the Palin hymnal and operating from her playbook… since he’s plainly had to study it.

Mitt just release your tax returns and we’ll see who is telling the truth. Unless of course there is something that is even worse than looking like a big fat liar.

I have a strong feeling now that Mitt Romney will NOT be the Republican nominee for President, much less President. Why? Because President Obama is a ruthless killah of killahs with a reputation of taking out opponents both literally and figuratively. And so the Prez’s “drones” are circling ominously over Mitt’s head just waiting for the opportunity to catch Mitt by hisself…, to minimize any collateral damage, of course. And that will be instant after Mitt’s forced to release his tax returns. I’m pretty sure all this will happen just before the Republican Nominating Convention, which will leave no other option but for them to suffer thru a brokered convention to select someone else…, quite possibly Rick Santorum! mark my words…, Mitt’s not gonna make it thru august in one piece.

Romney has been running for President like forever. Did the Republican’s not VET this nitwit? Or did they think the Koch’s and Rove could buy an idiot’s path into the White House?

But, but, as Ann Romney whined – “It’s our turn!”
Our “mission should we choose to accept it” (and I do) is to ensure that this entitled, crooked SOB never gets near an elected office again.

I just love the way the hard right can dish it out but can’t take a dose of their own medicine. Willard Romney has constantly lied about Barack Obama from day one, and was equally ruthless in dispatching his opponents in his party’s nomination. Now, he is confronted with the reality that the truth of his dishonorable record at Bain is being exposed, and he can’t deal with the heat. So, he needs to get out of the proverbial kitchen. The most laughable of all his lies about Bain is that in spite of his claim to have cut ties with it in 1999, he is on record as signing Bain documents in his capacity as CEO and president beyond that year. I guess he’s trying to backpedal now that his tenure there is seen as a liability instead of an asset that would serve him well in his bid for the White House. It’s so ironic, because he thought this would make up for his avoidance of touting his sorry record as governor of Massachusetts.

On Friday the 13th (7/13/2012) the very illusive Mitt Romney gave very defensive interviews to all FIVE networks on a single day at once!! Just a few days ago Mitt Romney said to FOX News that explaining means that you are WEAK. So his five interviews “explaining” his time at Bain were signs of his weakness!!
Presidential Candidate Mr. Mitt Romney maybe feeling the heat on his role in BAIN Capital, his business experience which was supposed to be his sole criteria for creating jobs and his greatest qualification for running for the American Presidency in the current economy in 2012!
However SEC documents show Mitt Romney as sole owner of all shares of Bain Capital. Romney is shown as CEO, President and Chairman of Board of Bain Capital in 2001 and 2002 then LEGALLY speaking Mitt Romney has been responsible to all that goes on under the banner of Bain Capital.
Mitt Romney can not just share the good like job creation from 1999 to 2002 and leave the ugly like Bankruptcies and layoffs behind as if he had nothing to do about them from 1999 to 2002.
If he really wanted to disassociate himself from Bain Capital he could have resigned and sold all his shares in Bain Capital in February 1999 then it would have been a different matter but to share in the glory of Bain’s job creation accept a salary of $100,000 or MORE (where are the Tax Returns?) for three years and only to refuse to take the responsibility of Bankruptcies and layoffs on his WATCH (1999-2002) is trying to have it both ways and then complaining of playing politics having been caught with his hand in the proverbial Cookie Jar that is the very essence of an ACTIVE LEGAL ROLE in Bain Capital till 2002!! Was Romney getting $100,000.00 or more to do NOTHING for BAIN Capital???
Mitt Romney will have to face the consequences of this leaving Bain “lie” that Mitt Romney has brought on upon himself. If we keep reminding the Romney campaign of the Bain exit lie and Romney’s ill effects on workers robbing them of their hard earned salaries and life long benefits all the way to November then 7/13/2012 (FRIDAY the 13th) will go down as the turning point of the 2012 Presidential election!

“Given the precedent set by past seven Presidents and Presidential candidates of releasing multi-year tax returns why is Romney making an exception?” Because he has a lot to hide, apparently.
He’s the only one that knows what’s in there, and apparently he’s made the judgement that he’s better off having us suspect the worst, rather than us knowing whats in there, which apparently in his mind is worse than anything we’re likely to imagine.
Possibilities include:
(1) He ended up with 120 million in his 401K by the trick of agreeing with Bain to grossly undervalue the market value of his stock, then a few years later have the stock get unvalued to the stratosphere.
(2) He participated in the tax avoidance amnesty program of a few years back, avoiding major tax penalties or prosecution.
(3) Any one or more of the other borderline legal but very bad smelling tax dodges– “in-kind” trades, “no-risk” trades, no-risk write-offs, the list is almost endless.
And BTW he HASNT even released all of his 2010 return, he very conveniently left off the foreign investments and deposits form. Very convenient.
And his argument that it would be “bothersome” to collect the tax data is a crock too– he supposedly collected 23 years of the stuff to show to McCain in 2008.

Republicans betrayed their own conscience when they went against established Republican principles like the MANDATE over healthcare which was a Heritage foundation issue popularized by Gingrich.
Obama did more than his share to UNITE but the Republicans were out to oppose for opposing sake and not following any policy or principles. In the famous words of Minority Senate Leader Mitch McConnell the Republicans were out to defeat the Obama agenda even if it went against established Republican policies set by past precedent.
Mitch McConnell was out to make sure that President Obama remains a one term President and see where it has brought the Congress and its public esteem.
Gingrich out of his own admission was out to defeat Obama from the day he was sworn in as President.
You can not justify the Republicans as the “loyal” opposition as is the case in most mature democracies. They have been out to get President Obama by hook or by crook. A leader can meet the opposition half way but can not fold completely to their whims and fantasies like that of the current Tea Party affiliates.
Republicans will loose in 2012 just like they did in 2008 but with a smaller margin because of the dark money of Billionaires due to Citizens United verdict of the right wing Supreme Court.

” … Mitt Romney senior adviser Ed Gillespie said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union” the GOP candidate “retroactively” retired from Bain Capital after the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics began. … ”
No body who has been drawing at LEAST $100,000.00 per year from 1999 to 2002 from Bain Capital “retroactively” retires from Bain Capital AFTER the 2002!!! Then why draw the salary of at LEAST $100,000.00 per year from 1999 to 2002 from Bain Capital if Romney retired from Bain “retroactively” !!!
” … Gillespie continued, “He took a leave of absence and, in fact, Candy, he ended up not going back at all and retired retroactively to February of 1999 as a result.” … ”
However SEC documents show Mitt Romney as sole owner of all shares of Bain Capital. Romney is also shown as CEO, President and Chairman of Board of Bain Capital in 2001 and 2002 then LEGALLY speaking Mitt Romney has been responsible to all that goes on under the banner of Bain Capital. Then to run for Governor of MA Romney sought residency of MA by lieu of his Bain positions. Now either Romney was at the Olympics OR he was at BAIN.
Only one can be true not BOTH at the same time simultaneously!!! Will the true Willard Mitt Romney stand up and accept ONE thing? Does Romney want to accept untrue SEC filings and be called a Felon or agree that he represented Bain from 1999 to 2002?
