SHAME on the Liar: Mitt Romney’s Mother Talks About His Father Being On Welfare
Seriously… This would make any person with a soul weep from shame. Yesterday, Mitt Romney attacked President Obama over providing food stamps to so many Americans in a time of need, as if this were a bad thing, as if people in need should not be helped, as if it were not George W. Bush’s policies that took Clinton’s surplus and turned it into the epic disaster from which we are still recovering.
Yet, Mitt Romney knows need well. Here is video of Mitt Romney’s mother, Lenore LaFount Romney, talking about how his father George was on welfare relief after he was a refugee from Mexico.
Watch Lenore LaFount Romney, the former First Lady of Michigan from 1963 to 1969 and the Republican Party nominee for the U.S. Senate in 1970, talk about George Romney being on welfare relief:
Will this stop Mitt Romney from bashing immigrants or poor people? No, because it’s not as if he didn’t know this. We all knew it about his father George, who never forgot where he came from and was a decent, hard working man.
George Romney watched his family struggle for years to pay off their debts and had his own business destroyed during the Great Depression. He knew hunger. His family lived on welfare relief in El Paso, Texas after fleeing to this country from Mexico. George Romney really did build his wealth, but only after he took some help from the government to get through tough times.
Mitt Romney is attacking President Obama for feeding poor children. According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities:
In 2011, SNAP helped almost 45 million low-income Americans to afford a nutritionally adequate diet in a typical month. Nearly 75 percent of SNAP participants are in families with children; more than one-quarter are in households with seniors or people with disabilities. While SNAP’s fundamental purpose is to help low-income families, the elderly, and people with disabilities afford an adequate diet and avoid hardship, it promotes other goals as well, such as reducing poverty, supporting and encouraging work, protecting the overall economy from risk, and promoting healthy eating.
SNAP caseloads have risen significantly since late 2007, as the recession and lagging recovery battered the economic circumstances of millions of Americans and dramatically increased the number of low-income households who qualify and apply for help from the program. Yet, despite the rapid caseload growth, SNAP payment accuracy has continued to improve, reaching all-time highs. Moreover, the Congressional Budget Office predicts that SNAP spending will fall as a share of the economy in coming years as the economy recovers and temporary benefit expansions that Congress enacted in 2009 expire.
Is Mitt Romney saying he would not offer food assistance to children?
In July, Rush Limbaugh said Romney was booed by the NAACP because all back people wanted was more food stamps. In reality, he was booed when he disrespected the Affordable Care Act, something he is so used to doing that it never occurred to Romney that many Americans are fierce supporters of it.
It’s hard to not put Romney’s newest attack in context with the welfare to work lie aimed at generating racial resentment, or ignore how it references Newt Gingrich’s “food stamp president” dog whistle.
Of course, Rush was wrong and Newt was wrong, just as Romney is dead wrong about his welfare to work lie. As Jason Easley explained in July:
The fact is that 70% of all food stamp recipients are white. Many of them probably watch Fox News and listen to Rush Limbaugh. 2010 Census data revealed that 49% of food stamp recipients were white. Twenty six percent were black. A 2009 New York Times map revealed that the top ten counties in food stamp usage were all located in red states.
Mitt Romney continues to demonize the poor and immigrants, and claim that he built his wealth himself — but that is not accurate. Mitt Romney was born into a wealthy family, and had all of the perks of a top notch, private prep school education and never a worry about how to pay for university.
The fact that Mitt Romney continues to lie about this basic truth is beyond shameful. There really aren’t words, but Americans should make note of Romney’s utter lack of compassion and appreciation for the gifts he was given through accident of birth. Mitt Romney did not earn his privilege the hard way, as his father did. Mitt Romney was born to it and thus assumes that he is better than others, people just like his father, who might need a little help from time to time.
Mitt Romney’s father was on welfare relief, and then he went on to make a great career for himself. His son is lying about welfare relief, and making ugly nods regarding the racial makeup of welfare recipients. In fact, just last night, the Romney campaign sent me an email doubling down on their welfare to work lie and begging for money.
Shame on you, Mitt Romney. SHAME.

Hm. My dad was a factory worker without a union, without medical or dental, and without a retirement fund. There were six kids, and my mom nver went to work until I was sixteen. They paid off a two story home when I was 18. We never once were on food stamps or any kind of welfare. We had powdered milk and canned fruit for desserts once a week. We ate a lot of hamburger. We always had one new pair of shoes when school started, and we always had a couple presents at Christmas. We never knew we were ‘poor.’ We just were.
Bravo to Mitt’s dad for entering politics and earning a fortune, but I suspect my family was a lot happier than his. And none of us grew up to bully other kids, nor ruin companies and lives to benefit ourselves. In fact, we are all middle class, four of us have college degrees, and the grandchildren are happy and doing fine. There is more to life than money, and far more to life than living to lie for more money.

Mitt Romney is the King Solomon to his father’s David – the talented son of a successful man who pulled himself up by the bootstraps (you don’t get any more “ashy to classy” than going from a shepherd to a King) but failed to the learn the lessons of humility and empathy for the poor from his father.
Mitt Romney’s dad was poor and struggled – but by the time Mitt was born his father was a wealthy executive – to him they were just stories from back in the day, he had no connection to that struggle. Mitt went the finest schools and pretty much hung out with only other rich kids (and the occasional working class kid he met at the Mormon Church).
So its not surprising he has no clue about poverty and struggle – to him the struggles of his dad were just stories from ‘back in the day’.

I think it is a great idea that someone is analyzing the father-son dynamic of the Romney clan, as they have been doing the same to Obama for years.
I think a good analogy for Mitt would also be the wise King Solomon (George) who left a united prospering kingdom to Rehoboam, who through his arrogance, ended up splitting the Kingdom apart.
“Whereas my father laid upon you a heavy yoke, so shall I add tenfold thereto. Whereas my father chastised (tortured) you with whips, so shall I chastise you with scorpions. For my littlest finger is thicker than my father’s loins; and your backs, which bent like reeds at my father’s touch, shall break like straws at my own touch.”

George Romney *was* a good man. I don’t know if he made the mistake of giving his children “everything” or if Mitt is a born sociopath.
I would point out that the same era that produced George Romney also gave us Stewart and Morris Udall, Mormons who were the antithesis of everything Mitt is.

THERE’S the problem in a nutshell — Romney doesn’t get how we all don’t see him as the wonderful someone HE thinks he is. It’s just so natural to him to believe he’s “The SH*T”, that he’s just lost for an answer when no one else agrees.

I’m currently reading/studying II Corinthians. Paul made the point that the amount one gives is not the important thing, it’s the fact that one gives what one can, so what’s your point? It seems you have an aversion to the truth and are looking for some reason to excuse Romney for his rotten attitude toward the poor. When someone is POTUS, he is president of all Americans! And, who knows exactly how much Romney donates to the poor? We have yet to see his entire 2010 and 2011 tax records. You’re the one who’s guilty of trying to use words as a smokescreen to prevent yourself from facing the fact that Romney doesn’t have the regard for the poor that his dad did. It’s true, and there’s no amount of spinning that can change the facts.

The amt of $ Romney supposedly donates to those less fortunate will prob never be known. His donations go to the Mormon church in the form of tithing. And since the church doesn’t have to pay taxes, well, you know. Mitt ate food provided by food stamps, lived in a house where the rent was paid from welfare $, & he puts others in the same situation down. He is a hypocrite, & I’m embarrassed & ashamed that he may be the next man to run our country. After his “goodwill” trip to Europe, & all his fumbling around, I’ll be really surprised if the rest of the world isn’t laughing at “that stupid American”. Mitt’s history only goes back as far as the beginning of the Mormon faith & John Smith.

What help they recieved was from the Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints not from the government.Mitt Romney has belped more people than obama will ever help and did it with his own money and time. Not like obama who uses the force of government to steal from the producers. When anyone recieves help they are expected to do something in return if they are capable.Unlike gov.aid which gives even to those who who could do something but don’t.Check it out with the church and then check out the gov didn’t obama change the rules on doing work for aid recently.

While Romney is running around the country lying about the welfare waivers, it’s stunning that he never mentions that he applied for the same waivers when he was governor of MA! Now, can you explain why he hasn’t told you, and others who believe his welfare lie, that he asked for these waivers, too? He’s lying about Medicare, too.

To Robert,
That is not accurate. The aid they received was federal money for refugees from Mexico, and there have been references to aid received during the business loss under the Great Depression.
They may have also received money from the Mormon church, but that is not at issue here.
Welfare to work gutting lies have been debunked so many times that the fact that you are unaware of this suggests you may not be interested in facts. In the event that you are, it is linked to in the article or you may Google it.
I suggest reading the Romney biography sourced at the end of the article (available on Amazon), and recommend that you provide links for your assertions when disputing facts presented if you wish to be taken seriously.

YOU’RE FUSSING AT A 5 YEAR OLD?
*Events during the Mexican Revolution forced his family to flee back to the United States when he was a child.
George was born on July 8, 1907
The Mexican Revolution broke out in 1910 – forcing the family to return to the US in 1912 (George age 5)
The family subsisted with other Mormon refugees on government relief in El Paso, Texas. Then moved to Los Angeles.
In 1913, the family moved to Oakley, Idaho ( George age 6) where they bought a farm.
And the story goes on from there.

I don’t participate in polls of this sort since they have the intended purpose of passing off their results as being valid when they’re not. This poll is an attempt to use a simple question to “prove” something that is really a very complex issue. To ask if republicans or democrats do/think/believe __ is only useful as an informal means of determining people’s opinions. I’ve actually done doctoral level research. This is why I can say with confidence that this poll and its results are meaningless, and its only function is to promote a particular POV.

It’s quite obvious to me that you know nothing/very little about economies and how they work. The reason our government passed laws dealing with unemployment and social programs is because in a nation that is in the throes of a deep recession or depression, having millions without food and/or housing, causes the recession/depression to deepen and last longer than it would without these types of assistance. For a real life lesson on how cutting these programs in a recession, look at Britain. Under David Cameron’s leadership and with his focus on austerity, Britain is experiencing a double dip recession. Social scientists have published numerous research studies showing that when people are forced to live without the basic necessities, the crime rate increases. Now, you’re entitled to your opinion, but the research shows you’re wrong. Also, I’d like to know whether you’ve contacted republicans in Congress and asked them why they’ve failed to create those jobs they promised us. Anyone placing all of the blame for our economy on the president’s shoulders doesn’t know how our federal government is supposed to work according to the Constitution, doesn’t understand economics, and isn’t worth wasting a lot of one’s time on.

I agree with almost all the critics of Romney hypocrisy, his Dad on welfare, etc.–one caveat, about the comment that George Romney, unlike Mitt, built his own fortune (after being on welfare). Noone does that, not John D. Rockefeller, Bill Gates, nor Romney–Obama is spot-on when he points out that all fortunes are made within the context of a whole society that supports them, helps them, even creates them in multiple ways. Perhaps Marx was even more accurate, that all fortunes are made on “the Backs of the laboring classes.”

Romney is against helping those in need or giving assistance to those families, that no matter how many hours they work,it still isn’t enought to survive. The problem is that in the past 4 years the economy, unemployment, tax hikes, hidden taxes (check your utility bill lately) has been so bad that more families have been brought into the public assistance system. With less people working to put money into the tax base which pays for this assistance. (deficit weakening the economy even more)
Plus, it has been calculated that a single parent with a decent job and one child earning about $50,000 by the time they pay for childcare, commuting costs, food, diapers, housing, has @ $600.00 less at the end of the year than someone who gets all that on public assistance. Why go to work? Stay home. Just saying HAPPY ELECTION YEAR!!

Yes, he does–to his church. This man is talking about increasing tax cuts for the rich who don’t need them–at the expense of everyone else. He will cut programs that help the poor and the middle class, and he has thrown folks under the bus during his tenure at Bain. Besides, he wants to defund Planned Parenthood, which gives access to gynecological health services for many women who could not get them without PP. So, whatever he donates is negated by the short-sighted appeals to selfishness that his platform features.

News Flash for you damned Republicans and greedy 1%ers: Almost all poor people would prefer to work and earn their own living. The rules put in place by the Republicans and the greed of business owners stymie them. I suggest you read a few books, starting with “The Poor Pay More” (dated and came out in the 60s, but still quite accurate and valid), “Debt for Sale”, and “Nickled and Dimed”:On (Not) Getting By in America”.
I could name a lot more books and articles, but if you will read those three and always remind yourself that this is the reality of poverty in this country – maybe you’ll wake up and see your own error.
The problem with Romney is that the help his own father received, he wants to deny to others. With the way he and the damned Republicans are trying to prevent people from getting degrees (and reaching their level of functionality), it’s obvious that the conservatives WANT people to be poor and miserable, as long as it’s not them.

I will salute Willard on election night when he gives his concession speech, and then he will slink into the dark with the other “shouldn’t-have-run-for-dogcatchers” of history, and never seek political office again.
He’s been running since 2000; and this upcoming drubbing should perhaps make him reassess his future goals in public service.
I have a job, thank you; it was a much better job before Willard helped outsource it and I had to train my replacements in Punjab.

(Laugh) with bastards like him, anyone who needs help is a welfare cheat.
I learned about those God damned bastards years ago, when my health collapsed and I couldn’t do the work I’d been doing for years. People like him were telling me all along while I had my small business that my taxes were going to welfare cheats, but the system was there and would catch anyone who through no fault of their own ended up not being able to work.
When I couldn’t keep working and applied for disability, suddenly the very same people who had been telling me that (“GOOD CHRISTIANS” ALL) started calling me a “welfare cheat” and “Lazy Bum”, along with “Get a JOB!”. Never mind that we couldn’t get welfare, and I was denied disability (in spite of 3 witnesses and 5 doctors) – and locked out of the system by a nice conservative judge who violated the law in over a dozen ways and got away with it.
When we went without power for three months, I was getting lectures about “work ethic” from the same “Good Christians” who admitted I couldn’t do the work I did before, but didn’t care that I also couldn’t do the things they thought I should (like working at McDonalds and Burger King). When I was begging for food and going to homeless shelters to get food to survive, they were lecturing me on how others had it harder than we did.
I learned that once you need help, you’re automatically a “welfare cheat” in their eyes. Oh, and when I returned to school to try to find something I CAN do (which with a doctorate becomes possible), they also tried to block that and belittled the choices I made and the attempt to improve our situation.
Needless to say, I no longer go to “Good Christian” churches and HATE them.
I realized that they have no mercy or kindness, and EVERY poor person is a “welfare cheat” and “lazy bum”, even if they don’t get welfare.

Hey, I don’t care who he is or IF he gets elected, I will NEVER salute that Mormon moron! That ass does NOT give to charity, he gives (begrudgingly) to the MORMON church which will NOT donate to anyone or anything that is not MORMON! Do NOT expect me and YOU have NO right to tell me that I HAVE to salute that idiot you worship so much! Because you DO worship that cow pie, that makes YOU an absolute idiot!

There are so many inaccuracies on this post. Romney gave his entire inheritance to charity. He did go to private schools just like Obama! Obama had his way paid for by others, isn’t that called a sponge! The fact is that Democrats give much less than any conservative. These facts are out there and they are correct. All I hear in these comments is hatred which is so characteristic of liberals. What a shame!

George Romney’s parents were American citizens. They lived in Mexico, but fled back to the US during the Mexican Revolution. They did receive assistance, but did not make a living off of it. Those are the true facts. George Romney went on to become a successful businessman. The problem with the welfare system today is the abuse. It was to never intended as a support system for deadbeats. There are people who have received assistance temporarily. That is what it was meant for–short term aid.
