Speaking of Hubris, This is the Reason Why Republicans Hate Chuck Hagel
Speaking of Republican hubris, Chuck Hagel was one of the few elected officials on either side of the aisle who had the courage and conviction to speak his mind in the lead up to the Iraq invasion and after it.
Then Senator Hagel (R-NB) questioned Condoleezza Rice on the Iraq strategy in a Senate Foreign Relations Committee confirmation hearing. Of the Bush administration’s Iraq strategy he said, “It’s, first of all, in my opinion, morally wrong. It’s tactically, strategically, militarily wrong. We will not win a war of attrition in the Middle East.”
Watch here:
Transcript from Youtube:
SENATOR HAGEL: … but I would even begin with this evaluation; that we owe the military and their families a policy, a policy worthy of their sacrifices, and I don’t believe, Dr. Rice, we have that policy today.
I think what the president said last night — and I listened carefully and read through it again this morning — is all about a broadened American involvement, escalation in Iraq and the Middle East. I do not agree with that escalation, and I would further note that when you say, as you have here this morning, that we need to address and help the Iraqis and pay attention to the fact that Iraqis are being killed, Madame Secretary, Iraqis are killing Iraqis. We are in a civil war. This is sectarian violence out of control — Iraqi on Iraqi. Worse, it is inter-sectarian violence — Shi’a killing Shi’a.
To ask our young men and women to sacrifice their lives, to be put in the middle of a civil war is wrong.
It’s, first of all, in my opinion, morally wrong. It’s tactically, strategically, militarily wrong. We will not win a war of attrition in the Middle East.
And I further note that you talk about skepticism and pessimism of the American people and some in Congress. That is not some kind of a subjective analysis, that is because, Madame Secretary, we’ve been there almost four years, and there’s a reason for that skepticism and pessimism, and that is based on the facts on the ground, the reality of the dynamics.
And so I have been one, as you know, who have believed that the appropriate focus is not to escalate, but to try to find a broader incorporation of a framework. And it will have to be, certainly, regional, as many of us have been saying for a long time. That should not be new to anyone. But it has to be more than regional, it is going to have to be internally sponsored, and that’s going to include Iran and Syria.
When you were engaging Chairman Biden on this issue, on the specific question — will our troops go into Iran or Syria in pursuit, based on what the president said last night — you cannot sit here today — not because you’re dishonest or you don’t understand, but no one in our government can sit here today and tell Americans that we won’t engage the Iranians and the Syrians cross-border.
Some of us remember 1970, Madame Secretary, and that was Cambodia, and when our government lied to the American people and said we didn’t cross the border going into Cambodia. In fact we did. I happen to know something about that, as do some on this committee.
So, Madame Secretary, when you set in motion the kind of policy that the president is talking about here, it’s very, very dangerous. Matter of fact, I have to say, Madame Secretary, that I think this speech given last night by this president represents the most dangerous foreign policy blunder in this country since Vietnam, if it’s carried out. I will resist it.
End transcript.
Hagel is the recipient of two Purple Hearts from the Vietnam War. He knows about dangerous foreign policy blunders and he values the lives and sacrifices of our troops too much to be silently complicit in the face of obscene excuses for war.
But even after all of his disagreements with Dr. Rice, Senator Hagel told Gwen Ifill of PBS, ” I will support the nomination of Dr. Rice. She’s eminently qualified, well prepared. And I think she’ll be an excellent secretary of state.” Yes, this was after Dr. Rice lied to the American people about the weapons of mass destruction, which makes the Republican obstruction of Hagel even more ridiculous.
In that same PBS interview, then Senator Russ Feingold said of Hagel, “I’m sitting here with a Republican, who had the integrity at hearings from the very beginning to ask the right questions… And you know what, we never got a good answer then. Senator Hagel tried; Senator Lugar tried; it was a bipartisan effort.”
Hagel represents the truth about the unconscionable Republican foreign policy disaster of the Iraq war; the lie that must not be discussed — the lie the mainstream media whitewashed and ignored, while busily chasing after Benghazi conspiracy theories as if that will rehabilitate them for their failures.
Hagel is the integrity and morality missing in the values bankrupt modern day Republican Party. His existence is a constant rebuke of their own failures. And that is why they hate him.
We do not have a Secretary of Defense right now because the Republican Party refuses to face their own failures and instead chooses to punish all reminders.

Republicans/CONservatives can never be wrong. Not about their economic philosophy, not about what the people want and certainly not about the biggest con of them all the war in Iraq.
To admit failure undermines everything they believes in,their reason to exist. That’s why they are lashing out at everything and everybody that contradicts them.
It is time that the media start holding them accountable. No one gives a rats ass about your hissy fit over pictures or access for your glorified entertainment.Do your jobs,if you are that lazy let google or YouTube do it for you.Hell we do it everyday, its not that hard.

Great article. It’s amazing how incredibly brave Sen Hagel was, not only for his acheiving two purple hearts in Vietnam, but for standing up to his own party BECAUSE OF HIS BELIEFS. There were few enough Democrats that spoke out against the war in Iraq. To have a politician that has the courage to speak his convictions to Congress, against the policies of his own party, and in front of TV cameras is a wonderful, brave, and altogether too rare of an occurance in today’s world.

Especially in that Hagel was an enlisted person, not an officer. He saw it all up close and personal, not from a relatively safe distance.

Republicans will support the Bush war initiatives till the end while at the same time bashing Obama being in Libya and Afghanistan. They will support the Bush wars because they were wars for Israel. Libya had nothing to do with Israel therefore we see the hate popping out.
Chuck Hagel had the sense to make sense out of what the administration was doing and how none of it made sense. The fact that he voted for every war and every candidate that Bush pushed like Dr. Rice is lost upon the Israelite ambassadors to the Congress.
one thing that scares Republicans is another Republican who has seen the whites of the enemy’s eyes, recognizes Israel for what it is and has cajones. they themselves do not have that ability to speak out and work for America

If only we had included the icing on the cake. I really wish Rachel would have dug back to the primaries because Bush slipped then about his going to war. No one seems to remember that line but me it seems. I hated him then when he ran for President. He came off as some spoiled rotten rich kid that couldn’t wait to kick everyone off the playground. A real piece of work I saw. And a real good liar..if you were just plain stupid. I said it before on here years ago. During the primaries Bush said I WILL BE THEE WAR PRESIDENT and of course his nut job RW crowd cheered the SOB. But here’s the thing. Today? EVERY SINGLE HUMAN BEING who lost a loved one in that WTC needs to SUE BUSH FOR WRONGFUL DEATH. Your loved one did not have to die. NOR DID ANY SOLDIER IN AMERICA have to die. NOR did any child elder or mother father brother sister in IraQ HAVE TO DIE. All of you have a right to sue for LOSS OF CONSORTIUM BASED ON the LIES BUSH & HIS CLAN DID ALL FOR WAR CONTRACTS–HALLIBURTON. You people on the right who insist on believing the limbaughs of the world and FOX who only make you more and more ignorant every day. YOU are the ones..more than anyone who need to SCREAM THE LOUDEST and sue YOUR REPUBLICAN PRESIDENT BUSH and his THUGS for letting your loved ones DIE and ruining this country with YOU in it. HE LET AMERICANS DIE in the WTC to have his WAR ANE CONTRACTS FOR HALIBURTON! He let this country fall to its knees. And because of what the GOP did..look at you now. Look at America now. How do you deny all that? And now you want to blame Pres Obama for all of it. How fricken convenient. I said that too. They will blame this President for all the debt we are in created under bush. And lo and behold. BUT PLEASE..ANYONE who lost your loved one PLEASE SUE BUSH FOR WRONGFUL DEATH..actually a better cause..PREMEDITATED MURDER. He knew what he planned to do as HE STOLE THE ELECTION TO GET HIS WAR. Sue him!

No Tiger Lily, you’re not the only one who heard or remembers. I was shocked to my core when I found that my youngest son, raised by two Democratic parents, was going to vote for Bush (the first time). I told him at the time that if Bush was elected, one of his first projects would be to declare war on Iraq. He thought I was nuts & said so. And that was before 9/11. They were working toward that goal long before the election, just waiting for the opportunity to do so and 9/11 gave it to them. Hmmmmm.

That was real convenient, wasn’t it? And if the plane that went down in Pennsylvania had hit the Capitol instead, it would have been even more convenient.

One of my greatest fears is that the Republican/ Tea Party/ Neocon/ Whatever will turn me in someone just like them. Whatever they stand for I am against. I’m getting just as nuts as them. I used to pride myself on an open mind but at my age I’m running out of time and patience. Everything and everyone in the “GOP” is intrinsically evil.
Every issue. I can’t believe I ‘m writing this —–

There comes a time when an open mind is no longer useful, and you must admit that one side is just plain wrong. That time is now, when it comes to the GOP and its Hydra-like branches.

The “GOP” is more than wrong— they are evil. I sound like some wacko calling Obama a Muslim or worse.
I am 67 years old. I used to say that even Hitler had some good things to say but I feel my mind closing like a clam. Name the issue and the wackos have an insane response . Now I hear the United Nations is trying to take over the US government and the entire world. It is not just Rush or Beck anymore— it’s all of “them”.
My head hurts– I need a vacation.

Apparently Cruz (aka the new McCarthy) is not the sharpest pencil in the box, the information he threw at Hagel was from a right wing blogger in the NY daily news who now says it was a joke and he did not think anyone would be dumb enough to fall for it.
Along comes Cruz and thinks he has the smoking gun, no wonder Hagel looked a little puzzled!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Oh my gosh. I so needed a laugh today and listening to you fools rant on here has given it to me. First – if those in families whose loved ones are deceased from the war have the right to sue the government, so do all of those who will lose jobs or loved ones from Obamacare. For example: my uncle with Alzheimer lay in his hospital bed in stable condition. The doctors had already assured my aunt that he would be fine. After my aunt had sat at his bedside for twelve hours with no rest, food or relief, this hospital administrator came into the room and told my aunt she needed her to sign some papers for “insurance” purposes. My aunt confused and dazed did so thinking she was agreeing to the medicare and hospice care that was agreed upon previously. Apparently she signed up with Obamacare, unknowingly, and after that the nurses and doctors were not allowed to give him any food or drink and he was shipped off to hospice care to wither and die. Yes, Obama is the savior of us all!!

I will let your post stay for now up because maybe someone with more knowledge can debunk your claim. But if the majority of the provisions of the ACA dont kick in till 2014 how was your family so special to get the full package?
