Right Wing Attacks Stephanie Miller, Sobbing Ohioan Hugged by POTUS
By: Sarah JonesJul. 6th, 2012more from Sarah Jones
For four years, Stephanie Miller, whose 37 year old sister Kelly Hines died of colon cancer four years ago, has wanted to tell President Obama her sister’s story. Yesterday in Ohio, the nation was moved as Stephanie got to not only tell Obama her heartbreaking story, but she also got a big hug from the President.
And then she got the backlash. By last night, the Right wing was in full attack mode, calling her a plant replete with accusations of conjuring evil and issuing fake tears over her sister’s death, claiming her sister deserved what she got because she “chose not to get insurance.”
Ms. Miller spoke last night with Alan Colmes on his radio show about her emotional embrace from the President as well as the right wing attacks. Here’s the video courtesy of Fox Radio:
Ms. Miller believes that if Obama Care had been in place four years ago, her sister might still be with her. Her sister was a hard working single mom of two young boys. She couldn’t afford healthcare. Instead of using the money for herself to go to the doctor, she made sure her boys went.
For Stephanie, the passage of ACA meant that her sister didn’t die in vain, because no other family would have to go through what her family went through. Had her sister’s colon cancer been caught earlier, she would have had a much better chance of survival.
Speaking on Alan Colmes’ radio show last night, Stephanie said the President’s reaction was to say he was sorry for her family’s loss, and then he asked for the name of her sister, which Stephanie provided. The President said Kelly (Stephanie’s sister) would be in his thoughts every day as he fights for us all. Then Obama hugged Stephanie, surprising her because she didn’t expect her sister’s story to matter so much to the President of the United States.
Ms. Miller thinks that once people realize Obama Care isn’t the monster people think it is they will wonder why they were scared of it. Stephanie doesn’t have health insurance either right now, she has to work for a year before she qualifies to get insurance.
Speaking of monsters, right before Ms. Miller was on Colmes’ show, Alan and I were treated to a frothing conservative barrage on Twitter (I am @srjones66). Here’s a sampling, from evil to fake tears to her sister deserved it – it’s enough to make a patriot weep for their country:
@FunraiseDesigns: @AlanColmes she is a Plant she chose not to get insurance. You are a Lying propaganda Socialist Pig @srjones66
To put this in perspective, this guy also tweeted:
@FunraiseDesigns: @srjones66 @AlanColmes I have God you Have OBAMA I feel sorry for you and your False Idol OBAMA, srjones66 666 evil#
and
@FunraiseDesigns: @srjones66 @AlanColmes You both Haters of the Truth, sister’s using her sisters death for her Idol Obama, disgusting Fake tears :(
and
@FunraiseDesigns: @srjones66 Oh and be careful since udon’t look up you’ll won’t see the House fall on top, or stay out of the water LOL
Here’s a few more:
@RememberComeNov: How will your audience know who’s who? MT @alancolmes: on radio with me at 10:15 www.alancolmesradio.com @srjones66: Sobbing Woman Thanks Obama
@tonybalogna: @AlanColmes @srjones66 Exploiting mentally ill people to make Obamacare look better than it is. Nice morals, Dems.
@AVISOinsurance: @AlanColmes @srjones66 Man, Is she about to be disappointed!
Alan Colmes brought up the right wing attacks, but Stephanie is no shrinking violet. She pointed out that while yesterday was the four year anniversary of her sister’s death, she knew there would be a lot of negative reaction but it doesn’t bother her.
For her, yesterday was a once in a lifetime chance to tell the President her sister’s story, “I didn’t think I would actually be able to talk to him (Obama). I was fortunate enough to get close enough to touch him. And I decided it was now or never to tell him her story and he was gracious enough to stand there and let me tell him her story.”
Is the Right wing simply refusing to accept the fact that people in this country actually die from lack of health insurance? They seem to believe that people can afford insurance but choose not to purchase it (this is actually an argument for Obama Care as it will make insurance affordable for everyone, but we’ll let this intellectual lapse go). In Stephanie’s sister’s case, her income was too high for Medicaid. This is a common problem for middle-income families. They make too much to be eligible for help, but not enough to pay the hundreds of thousands of dollars it takes to fight a disease like cancer.
Here’s the deal. Nearly 50 million people in this country don’t have access to healthcare and more are going broke paying for it. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 23 million of those without health care are white, 15.3 million are Hispanic, 8 million are black, 2.6 million are Asian. However, the percentages show that 1 in 10 white people are without insurance, while 2 out of 10 black people, 3 out of 10 Hispanics and 2 out of 10 Asians are without health insurance. Those without healthcare have shorter life spans.
Our healthcare system was broken before Obama Care. Good people — hard working people — died for lack of access. Their children died. We are 37th among industrialized nation for healthcare according to the World Health Organization. France is number 1. This is not exceptional; it’s completely unacceptable.
Stephanie rightly observed that Obama Care is going to change people’s lives and she hopes it isn’t repealed, “This bill will positively affect millions of people in this country. If somehow someone else gets into office and they repeal this bill, those same people will be negatively impacted.”
For her trouble, Ms. Miller is being targeted and her loss is being cruelly mocked. Of course, Stephanie works at a prison, so I’m thinking she might be more immune to intimidation than they expected. They won’t get her to back down with juvenile, cold-hearted name-calling.
Americans like Stephanie Miller have a story to tell, and tell it they will. No frothing right wing trolls are going to tread on their Real American Stories.
This is a real American story; the story of a family who lost a loved one, who might have been saved if only she had had access to affordable health insurance. In a nation with 50 million uninsured, too many can relate to this story. It’s a story that didn’t have to be, and won’t be once the Affordable Care Act is implemented fully. Inevitably, the woman behind this story is now being ruthlessly attacked by anti-healthcare conservatives.

Republicans are closer to Hitler than ever before. i love how they deem some people are not worthy of healthcare because they deem them not to be???? My it sounds like the way Hitler thought of the JEWS???? Who the F are these fake Christians to play god and decide by their meaning of who deserves healthcare if only they can pay????

It’s closer than you think to Hilter’s ideology. Whenever I ay this I feel like I should be wearing a tinfoil hat. I’m an Army vet, brought up in a conservative household, and was until the Wisconsin recall elections. Looking up the reasons behind the broo ha ha , I stumbled across more and more information regarding Dominionism. This is a movement to completely replace our democracy with a theocracy based on a Christian militancy that has nothing to do with Jesus or his message of peace and forgiveness. Re-writing history to say that this was a “Christian” nation in the sense of how fundamentalists view Christianity today, abolishing any birth control or abortions, controlling education, indoctrinating our military to fight “In the name of the Holy Spirit” all parallel the Third Riech’s rise to power. Search The Quiver Full Movement, The Wall Builders, David Barton, Dominionism, and then search for Military Religious Freedom Foundation. I realise people are going to think me a fruit cake for this stuff…but listen to what kind of language our lawmakers are using. It’s straight out of Dominionist propaganda
…Good luck.

Glad you’ve had your eyes opened Jason and you are exactly correct with your connection to the Hitler regime. I’ve been saying it for years. They utilize Goebbel’s propaganda techniques to the letter. They also proclaimed they were a “Christian Nation” and were “exceptional & superior.”
There is the start of a growing awareness across the country about the Dominionists, and those of us who have been following this scourge for many years certainly know of all the dangers they present to our country. We MUST keep sharing the information about them at every opportunity. They’re also the NAR, the Harvest/Transformation networks and so many others, hiding under many names & many guises. For further critical information regarding these creatures, please visit Leah Burton’s excellent web site God’s Own Party. godsownparty.com/blog/ She frequently posts here as well. No need for the tinfoil, our wised-up Valentine. It’s really there. As someone who has read William Shirer, Konrad Heiden, John Toland, Ron Rosenbaum, and contemporary reports from ancient Britannica yearbooks, I assure you the resemblances are real…and intentional. And it is for stories like this that I cannot vote for the GOP. I always marvel when people like these posters have the gall to call liberals “haters”. We can all see from whence true venom spews. And I want nothing to do with a party that calls these idiots “the party base”.

Many on the Right are devoid of shame. They want what they want when they want it, and it doesn’t matter who they have to smear or belittle on the way to getting it. These folks aren’t Christians. They only use Christianity as a means to deny others the same things that they have access to.

Given the increasingly naked aggression and blatant lies the Right is engaging in, I am beginning to think the goal is not so much deception as intimidation. “We know you saw the President on the White House lawn on the Fourth, but we say he was in Paris, so he was in Paris!” Furthermore, the sewer channels of the Right- that shadowy region we’ll call Moonfront Republic- is urging frank retaliation against “libruls”, such as firing employees and boycotting or trashing merchants who may have voted “wrong”. Add to that the bloody rhetoric that many of them are spouting, and I suspect we can see them contemplating a campaign of intimidation during the upcoming election. What they contemplate thereafter, win or lose…interesting, Watson.
We must know the worst, and prepare for it; we cannot let ourselves be daunted by it. They think “libruls” are weak. The very resiliance of liberals in the weight of the most bloody-handed repression, however, is why there are far more Presidents than monarchs; why there are elections; why there is judicial process instead of summary justice; why renters and women and minorities vote; indeed, why anyone votes. The spirit of reaction, like that of Dracula, does not die, but increasingly it is driven into dark corners, and when it emerges into the light of day, it is ever more at risk of being slain. Maybe someone will do it. Maybe, if we are persistent, we will.

Speaking of intimidation, I saw a piece on Rachel Maddow describing a Colorado 4th of July parade in which a littler Koch brother paraded his collection of tanks and military vehicles. Wow. Jul. 8th, 2012 at 12:07 am
In fact, having followed your link and then made inquiries, I found that there’s quite a bit of this stuff out there, that anyone with the money can get it, and many have. It’s basically surplus from foreign sovereigns past and present, often old Warsaw Pact stuff. Richbies have been in the habit of playing war games with it on weekends and holidays, and until recently, it was a case of big boys with big toys. One of the Koch brothers parading his military might in broad day down the main street of a small town puts a whole different light on it.
I am further informed that a right-wing foundation has paid quite handsomely for young men to don the Che Guevara T-shirts and wave the hammer and sickle flags they provide at OWS and other librul events, and to behave themselves as disreputably as they can without getting caught. This election season looks like being dirty, ugly, and perilous, to say nothing of the sequelae.

My heart goes out to you, Stephanie Miller. You are just a single voice with a story that has now been heard. As Ms. Jones states, to many of us have a similar story to tell or are living that story as the battle for ACA wages on.
It is only when I see those who oppose ACA walk in our shoes and manage to keep the same opinion will I pay any service to the vitriol that they spew.
Peace be with anyone who lost someone they’ve loved because ACA is to late, be known that our voices are not silent and we will spare another family from feeling our loss.

I don’t understand the mean spiritedness of the current crop of Republicans. I’ve seen people at such venues as Huffington Post trash and threaten the unemployed and others who are struggling.
I would like to think that most of them are paid trolls, but I can’t imagine someone being so totally vindictive and cruel for a few pennies.
It’s not just a difference of opinion; it’s cruelty. That’s the part that’s so disturbing.

Yesterday it was in the local news that a Florida politician told a person who wasn’t making it “Get a Job!”. When I was in the mainstream churches, that was their favorite refrain for any hardship – “Get a Job”. I’ve also heard “McDonalds and Burger King are hiring. If you’re not willing to work there, you’re just not willing to work and need to stop complaining”. That came after I’d just graduated with a Master’s and was starting to look for the first non-junk-job working for someone else (which never happened, for the reasons mentioned below).
The person the politician had spoken to had a job, but it wasn’t paying his bills. In many of the counties of this state, a person who doesn’t make good wages has to work two or three jobs just to afford a one bedroom apartment (source: Out of Reach Report by the Low Income Housing Coalition). In my case, they didn’t care that I had physical limitations that precluded “getting a job”… I cannot stand for long periods of time for instance, and sitting on a stool isn’t any better. All of the people who have said “Get a Job!” and the one I mentioned who wanted me to work at a burger joint all knew I had physical limitations, but they just didn’t care (all also liked to preach Jesus).
The “Good Christians” are inherently cruel, and the sort of behavior you’ve read about is just touching the tip of the iceberg. Imagine how it feels when you have people telling you “Get a JOB!!!” and find out later that they were deliberately blocking the attempts you made to earn a living, because it wasn’t “a job” demeaning enough for you (or because you had to learn some sort of “lesson” from “God”).
A friend of mine told me that the “Good Christians” (dominionists and even fundamentalists) enjoy cruelty and that’s why they do the things they do. They certainly don’t mirror the One they claim to follow, and indeed many of us refer to them as anti-Christians (as in antimatter), contraChristians, or aberroChristians, because their actions are the inverse of Christ. Since so many Republicans like to claim to be Christian, they also fit this pattern.

I watched a few of the health care town halls on CSPAN, and went to ours. Despite the horse manure spread by fright wing media, I saw some people sitting quietly, wanting to learn, while a bunch of knuckle draggers shouted, insulted and interrupted people who stood to apeak. At one town hall, a middle aged black woman stood up, saying she had worked for years, paid for her own health care, but her job was gone and she couldn’t afford it any more. She said she didn’t want anything given to her but wanted to pay for her own. She now couldn’t afford her medicine. Some skinny yokel who looked like a stereotype of a skinny methhead hillbilly, with a backwards hat, jumped up and started yelling at her, then the rest of the monkey pack around him started yelling at her to sit down. She was visibly shaken. I saw similar behavior at our town hall, where the idiots would dominate the microphone for an average of 40 minutes each, to just repeat their BS over and over while their buddies hooted and hollered. It got me so energized, I actually jumped out of my seat and jumped up and down making monkey noises and waving my arm like a chimp mock them…NOBODY NOTICED!! They probably thought I was one of them.

Why ARE they so hateful and evil? I think it is based on jealousy. It burns so hot that it must be a deep emotion and not truly idea-based at all. Freedom to think for one’s self? Is that what they are enraged about lacking? Higher intellect? More education? The fact that money will never buy them class? What is their hate-filled rage about? Someone said William Buckley would call them Vulgarians. Buckley must be spinning in his grave; Hitler is grinning in his.

I think being taught to hate by their preachers is also a major reason for their hostility. Rather than showing that all intelligent beings deserve respect (I’d argue that all living beings should get at least some respect, except for those that parasitize), they’re taught fear and hate towards the Other, unless they can get some sort of profit out of them (and even then they’re taught to despise others).

I never believed we had such knuckle-draggers in this country, but I’m beginning to see we really do. It shocks and saddens me that people who think like *this* might actually decide the future of the country in November. We’ve got to wake up, people! All I can say is, thank God my husband qualified for Medicaid when he got diagnosed last August with a brain tumor. He just got back from his latest MRI and his doctors at NIH were all marveling at how well he is doing. He is going to make it to a year past diagnosis, which fully half of all people diagnosed with glioblastoma do not get to do, and is still reading, writing, walking, talking, and even driving. Thanks to Medicaid he will live to finish his fourth book. Without it my husband would be dead right now, or we’d be bankrupt and possibly homeless. Who can afford the insurance premiums for a 40+ and a 60+ person, both with preexisting conditions, plus student loan payments, plus the hospital bills I was already paying on because I couldn’t afford health insurance before we got married due to the student loans?? The Neanderthals may wake up once it happens to them…oh, wait! Because of Obamacare, it WON’T happen to them!

It’s right trash who continually have to invent stories to sell things, like Jessica Lynch the phoney war hero (to name just one), and they get caught often for doing it. They are so desperate to try to prove “the other side does the same thing” but keep coming up short. Bottom line: Democrats have good ideas, there is no need to lie. Republicans, not so much.

The very things they accuse others of are they things they do themselves. They do so much terrorizing, and cheating, and lying, and stealing that they cannot deal with honest people trying to live honest lives. Everybody can’t “choose” whether or not they get insurance, and before Obamacare, they didn’t have much of a choice of what kind of insurance they got stuck with if they could get it.
They are a bunch of filthy insensitive blowhards who need to learn three things this election year and in mid-terms 2014:
1) America will NOT be bought off by Citizens United.
2) America will not be giving them any more tax breaks to create jobs that they do not create.
3) THERE WILL BE UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE IN AMERICA BY 2016! Period.

My father was diagnosed with Bile duct cancer and was told the options for treatment are not available to him because his blood pressure was to high and he had bad circulation. They do this because they are thinking they might get sued if your not in good shape for treatment.I went to get his meds and was told Medicare does not cover cancer meds. Its like you are penalized for getting cancer.I would like ACA to be kept in place and hopefully never repealed, just keep adding good things to it when we hold the majority in every branch.ACA is a good thing and will go down in history as a great moment in time for America.I would like to never ever see cancer as a penalty in health care.My father died in 2007.

Poor people with chronic medical conditions are penalized no matter what the condition is.
I am 61. When I was 34 I developed degenerative disc disease. I was able to work another 15-20 years as an electrician, telecom tech, and truck driver. Eventually my degenerative disc disease became advanced and caused nerve damage in my legs so walking became difficult. When I was 56 I applied for social security disability and had to fight with them for 4 years before I was approved.
Luckily I had paid off my house in 2002 so I only had to endure financial ruin and not homelessness.
A Walkaway

You’re lucky in that you got disability. The judge I had violated the law in over fourteen ways in his denial, and not only got away with it, he specifically applied the “10 quarters” law in my case, so I have to work 2 1/2 years full time before I can even consider disability (we have the decision including the application of that law stashed away).
I had (and have) severe FMS, a spastic colon (usually goes along with FMS), arthritis in my spine and hands, and neurological impairment that without medicine, causes my handwriting to not be legible (sometimes not even to myself). I live with constant pain (you should hear the “Good Christian” doctors carry on about giving me something stronger than eating the over-the-counter stuff like Aleve and Advil). When I mentioned the difficulties I faced, the people at the church we used to attend would say things like “Get a Job!”, “You must be God’s suffering servant”, and “everyone hurts a little now and then!”. Those are just some of the dismissive things we encountered.
The end result was that my eyes were opened to the truth about conservatism. I’d always heard from the Republican party that things like disability and so on were set up for people who needed help, but that it was being misused by parasites and lazy bums. I believed them and thought that there was a safety net available if things went wrong, but when my health got too bad to work like I used to, I learned that ANYONE trying to get disability or food stamps or medical care is considered a parasitic deadbeat – I received that label because I couldn’t “Get a Job!”. I also learned that the “safety net” had huge holes in it and if you don’t fit a stereotype, you fall through. I also learned that my story wasn’t unusual.
It’s a long story, but we struggled through (even had to beg for food several times) and I got my degrees, and because of them I found part-time work I can do because the people I work for cut me a little slack (mainly allow me to work from a comfortable folding chair that I carry and they realize that I have to pace myself – I can’t be pushed).
I’m worried that they will repeal the ACA, and since I had a TIA in December, it means that if they do, I probably won’t be able to get medical coverage. I now have to take 5-6 pills in the morning and anywhere from 2-4 in the evening, mainly to prevent another TIA or stroke, but also to make my handwriting legible and to help in other ways. I worry that getting my meds will become impossible, which could eventually be a death sentence. The really angering thing is that there is proof “out there” that government nuclear testing caused most of my problems, but they won’t open the books without my proving it happened first. No, they just want to blame and accuse and deny.
They also expect the churches to take over helping people… well, what kind of help is “Get a Job” anyway? That is, if they don’t send you to a church who slaps you on the forehead and then when that fails, blames you and throws you out on the street.

Obamacare doesn’t touch the REAL issue, but it distracts from it.
The REAL issue is the out of control insurance industry, which discriminates, spends most of it’s earnings on expansion and advertising NOT the premiums of it’s clients, charges HUGE monthly fees along with ridiculous deductibles, and up until recently, could drop people for getting sick!
THE INSURANCE INDUSTRY IS THE ISSUE.
THE INSURANCE INDUSTRY NEEDS REFORM.
THE INSURANCE INDUSTRY (like all other big industries) IS IN BED WITH THE GOVERNMENT.
Obamacare changes NONE of this.
You people screech like monkeys and fight over the DISTRACTIONS, not the CAUSE.

You need to take this quiz my friend. Every single one of these issues is directly and indirectly addressed in the ACA. In a political landscape where the Republicans are so directly and aggressively opposing anything Obama does, this *is* reform. It’s pretty darned robust, too, and already is having a direct influence on the industry. check out the quizz, by Insurance giant Kaiser Permanente. Nothing but the facts.

For over 11 years I struggled with IBD (Irritable Bowel Disease) in one form or another, until I was hospitalized on New Year’s Eve for malnutrition and dehydration, having lost 30 lbs in a month (2 lbs a day at the end.) We found out my colon was so shredded that it had to be removed almost immediately, or it would rupture and I could die. I had a lengthy hospital stay and ended up having to have two surgeries, at a total cost of well over a quarter of a million dollars. Fortunately my husbund was ex-military so we had decent insurance. The ironic thing is, now that I have a permanent ostomy and am WELL, I can’t get insurance because of it! I have to go uninsured for 6 months until I am eligible to sign up for the Federal plan. I am extremely glad that I had the foresight to stockpile medical supplies for a couple of years before my insurance ran out, because ostomy supplies are NOT OPTIONAL. I have even shared some with a friend who is unemployed, uninsured, can’t afford insurance, and who was so desperate for a job that she tried going to interviews using baggies and adhesive tape (which believe me, does not work.) I went all over Facebook begging for supplies for her, which is unconscionable to have to do in today’s world, in the US.

That coverage gap is the single biggest flaw in the ACA. I’m really sorry it’s affecting you in this way, I hope it can be fixed when Obama gets re-elected in November. Hang in there! If you pray, that won’t hurt.

The republican reply to these kinds of stories is that poor people without medical insurance can get care at the emergency room of a hospital. This dances around the point that with preventative services, which are not available at emergency rooms, hundreds of thousands of American lives could be saved.
This attitude among the republicans has been around for more than 40-50 years. My own opinion of this is that it is a form of cultural genocide, the target group being the chronically poor which incidentally includes many minority ethnic groups.
Sending people to emergency rooms when they are already sick and probably beyond help is nothing but a cop out by wealthy, self-righteous, republican politicians.

Stephanie is one brave lady. She had EVERY right to take advantage of the proximity of the President and to tell her story. I would say screw the Right but their shadowy backgrounds will not let us do so. I see a lot of comments here on their similarities to Nazi Germany and I have to say I am thrilled to see the word is spreading. I cannot find it anymore but a few years ago I read a speech that Newt Gingrich gave in San Diego. Basically what he said is that Liberals are a scourge on our nation and they need to be “Dealt With”. For all I know it has been deleted from the web.
Now I am not some conspiracy theorist but in light of all the other information I have seen and their attitude I have to say Liberals will be the “expendable” people should these people win. Don’t pay any attention to the fact that Mittens is Mormon because the faithful are falling right in to line. They will vote for him for the precise reasons others will choose not to vote for him – his utter lack of any core beliefs. They see a puppet that they will lead around with a leash even more so than Bush. IMHO Bush was a psuedo Born Again and he acted the part just enough to fool these people. The Bush family and Karl Rove are no strangers to propaganda to get what they want. They learned from the master Lee Atwater.

I just do not understand what in the world people are thinking of,when they object to everyone having affordable health care,or any health care at all,for that matter! These almost certinly are not folks who have had serious illness in their familes.Well, unless like Mitt Romney, when questioned about the fact his wife would not be able to get insurance, and his answer was”well, that’s okay because I just pay for her treatments”! How nice for them, but for “regular folks”,sure they can get emergency room care(that we all pay for),but,if they are found to have a serious illness, then nobody will treat them, without insurance! It seems that most people do not know that. Also, most do not know that,if the states keep cutting Meticaid, people will literally be thrown out of nursing homes, and their family will have to care for them at home! That is because nearly every single person in a nursing home, the government pays the amount, after their social security covers whatever it can, usually less than half what the Total cost is per month, and many patients have to be lifted&fed, and have oxygen, lots of things most families are not able to do,plus most people work.We do need govenment to do many things for us,that a person,no matter how rich,or poor, are unable to do on our own.

My fear is that the propogandists in the Romney camp will be successful in brainwashing the voters. Not enough truth about the far right is publicized. Too many people are not buying newspapers, or subscribe to on-line truth advocates. Iam 80 and keep watching that cynical smile of Romney’s with disdain. I had aortic stent surgery repair 2 years ago and am a viable, healthy senior who takes care of her home , garden and self. My physician of 35 years is a god-sent caring individual who is appalled at what is happening!

I don’t understand Twitter. When I found out what it was my first thought was…Twitter is everything I hate about Facebook. So when you posted the tweets, which one is someone saying something to you and which one is you saying something back?

The first name on the tweet is the sender. Anyone after that is the receiver(s)
For instance @FunraiseDesigns: is the sender on the tweets
