Conservatives have proffered every possible scenario to justify torture, including Supreme Court Justice Scalia invoking a fictional television counter-terrorism agent, Jack Bauer, torturing alleged terror suspects to stop a fictional attack on America.
Although Republicans detest democracy, they certainly understand the principle behind it and instead of swearing an oath to support a document always open to interpretation, Americans should demand that all politicians pledge to support America’s democracy; or leave office forthwith.
The Supreme Court’s anti-democracy wing; Roberts, Scalia, Thomas, Alito, and Kennedy issued an announcement that their decision was not on the merits of the case because they had not yet heard any oral arguments defending voting restrictions. They just believed so strongly that since Ohio’s Republican Secretary of State Jon Husted invested such an incredible amount of time and energy to disenfranchise minority and working-class voters, and labeled his “appeal” an emergency.
As we get closer to the mid-term election, we long for the times when preparing to vote was a matter of volunteering for a voter registration drive, working for a candidate’s campaign, familiarizing ourselves with the issues.
Political pundits are wont to claim Republicans obstruct governance and oppose policies and agendas that benefit the entire nation because they are clueless and lack issues, policies, and agendas, but that is not the case.
Today it is President Obama fighting Republicans to give all Americans the opportunities Dr. King sought for people of color, and besides not acknowledging income inequality even exists, Republicans are redoubling their advocacy of Reagan policies.
