Mittocracy: Tearing Down The Media’s Mitt Momentum Myth
By: Sarah JonesOct. 24th, 2012more from Sarah Jones
Very excited is the media about Mitt Romney’s “momentum”. They say he got this “momentum” when he lied his way through the first debate, leaving the President stunned by Mitt’s willingness to abandon all of his positions when facing the general public. We were told that the public loves an alpha male so win for Romney. No word on the fact that Romney’s post debate bounce evaporated a week later and the President won the second two debates, and Biden won the VP debate.
When Obama won the second debate, we were told women didn’t like the “pettiness” of the debate so lose for Obama because he fought back against the lies.
In the third debate, in which the President clearly routed Mitt Romney with facts and style (not surprising given that Mitt Romney knows less about foreign policy than he knows about taking care of dogs properly), we were told that Romney won or pulled even by not making any mistakes.
Sure, if Romney were ahead, that might make sense. But he’s not. And he did make mistakes. Romney made a gaffe ignored by the media, who lowered the bar for Romney as they did Palin. Romney said (again), “Syria is Iran’s . . . route to the sea.” This, of course, isn’t true. That’s Palin-level stuff, but barely a peep has been uttered about it. A Washington Post Fact Checker didn’t think it worthy of a Pinocchio rating “unless we create a category for weird language.” They haven’t done that yet, even though Sarah Palin used weird language for as subterfuge just as Romney is doing? Words don’t matter anymore?
Hey, kids! Climate change is a hoax and Syria is Iran’s route to the sea. Also, myths.
Romney, the media claimed, earned his stripes by sitting next to the president on a tough subject that the president is so good at. So, see, it’s not that you want the person who’s best at national security and foreign policy – it’s that you should give it to the guy who doesn’t care to learn about it because it’s unfair that he was outclassed by the President. Republicans don’t want a meritocracy anymore. They want a feel sorry for Mittocracy.
Helping these narratives along were the 25,000 tickets for a venue that seats 10,000 that the Romney campaign gave out to a Kid Rock concert/Romney campaign rally. There were crowds! He’s never managed to get a crowd until now, but the media claims it’s part of his momentum – not Kid Rock for free. Never mind that Romney has not managed to draw crowds like the President has consistently drawn during this entire campaign. Of special note were the “Democrats for Romney!” signs. This raises the spectre of the homeless African Americans the Scott Brown campaign paid to wear Obama for Brown! t-shirts, but okay.
And then we have the pollsters. New on the scene this year, because you can’t have enough Republican leaning pollsters even though there are more registered Democrats in this country than Republicans (though Republicans vote more than Democrats), we added Gravis Marketing to Rasmussen and Gallup, both of whom lean Republican — both of who are also reputable, tried and true polling firms, unlike Gravis Marketing.
Gravis Marketing is the pollster that announced African Americans were going for Romney suddenly by 40%, when all other polling showed Romney with 0-2% of the African American vote. When bloggers questioned Gravis Marketing’s methods, the owner showed up to argue in the comment section over and over and over again. Gravis is being included in most of the major poll tracking, and some folks weigh Gravis heavily.
Because Rasmussen uses formulas that render it in a different category than PPP, it’s possible that legitimate outlets are using Gravis as a conservative leaner to offset PPP. That doesn’t make Gravis accurate. It’s not just me — Bob Shrum noted Gravis’ Republican outlier status today on Politics Nation. It might behoove the media to read up on Gravis sooner rather than later. If they need help, the folks at Democratic Underground have done some digging.
This election will be won by state, not by feigned or propped up momentum. And by state, Romney is in trouble. Obama has the math in his favor at this point. Greg Sargent points out, “Whatever is happening on the national level, the fact remains that Romney faces a more daunting climb in the electoral math than Obama does — meaning the President is currently leading.”
Three new polls in battleground Virginia show Obama leading between 3-7 points. We’ve been told by the Romney campaign that Virginia was in the bag for them. “We are going to win Virginia, you know that?”
By early voting, Romney is in trouble. The Obama team’s ground game is a force of nature. In the all important state of Ohio, Obama is winning in early voting. Jason Easley covered the Obama ground game yesterday, “Obama is winning early voting in Ohio, Iowa, and Wisconsin. Ohio early vote turnout is higher for Obama in 2008 than in Republican counties. He (Messina) said that this election is more diverse. Most new registrants are under 30. 2/3 of those who have early voted are women, African-Americans, and Latinos. Democrats are winning everywhere where there are in person early votes.”
Can Mitt Romney win this election? Yes, he can. Between voter suppression, voter ID laws, voter registration fraud, voting machine malfeasance, True the Vote intimidation of minorities, and a Campaign of Lies so surreal and epic I’m nominating him for a Political Razzie, it’s possible. Low information voters combined with voter disenfranchisement and a lot of dark money creates a toxic brew.
But not much of this is real. Mitt Romney doesn’t have momentum.
He has never had momentum. What Mitt Romney has is a lot of big money behind him, propping him up and selling his lies to an unsuspecting public. He also has a media hungry for a horse race and seemingly incapable of keeping up with his repositioning and denials of his own policies. Is that dangerous and can he win? Yes, and yes. Does he have “momentum”? No.
What we have here is a Mittocracy rather than a meritocracy; it’s all about the myth, the con, the illusion.

At least Romney will have a job after his defeat. Not so sure about Paul Ryan, though. Maybe Mitt Romney can hire Paul Ryan to take care of his dog and his horse; Paul Ryan seems handy with a shovel.

I agree with much of what is written here. I think the Obama ground game will prove itself in the so-called firewall states. But despite all the noise, Obama has had a difficult time doing the one thing that would have finished the momentum question: present an actual plan for the next four years. He has one this week, but the timing is off. His campaign team has to continue to stay on-message and sell that plan.

The only Americans who don’t know what the president’s plans are for the next four years haven’t taken the time to access the White House web site. The information has been there for months. This claim is the same as all of the other claims–it was created by the right and the lazy MSM players refuse to use the free internet their employers provide to them to do research of any type. This is why millions of Americans and some of the MSM players were so surprised when Candy Crowley revealed in the second debate that the president had indeed called the attack on our consulate in Benghazi an act of terror. It’s time for some Americans to take responsibility for knowing about the issues. President Obama can post things on the WH web site, but he can’t force anyone to access the site and read them. Because of this, I’m not buying the latest lie that the president doesn’t have a plan or the other lie that the president just revealed his plan. The plans for the middle class, the deficit, and the budget have been on the WH website for months.

First we here, “where’s his plan, where’s his plan?” Then, as soon as he presents a printed plan, the same people say, “oh, this is what he’s been saying all along.” *bangs head against wall*

Exactly.
I am one of the many who signed up to receive the WH newsletters for the past few years. It is all there. People just have to read it. Get the word out.
The Righties continue to say “This is a failed president,” This president doesn’t have a plan.” etc. etc.
What has this president accomplished.
I am just so sick and tired of these comments on the Internet.
Thanks for your post.

Anyone who wants to see Obamas Accomplishments can see them here. NOTE: His accomplishments notably taper off after 2010, when the teabaggers enter congress.

He got all this fone inspite of this:
After the 2008 election the Democrats in the Senate only controlled 58 seats (Specter flipped early in the year to be number 59) the Franken/Coleman race wasn’t decided until July, Franken was sworn in as the 60th Senator on July 7, 2009. Ted Kennedy was gravely ill and missed all the votes from the period Franken was sworn in, till his death on August 25, 2009. So from Jan 3, till August 25th, the Senate Democrats did not have 60 votes to invoke cloture. Ted Kennedy’s replacement, Paul Kirk was not sworn into the Senate until September 24, 2009. He officially became the 60th vote, so Democrats finally achieved a voting super majority on Sept 24, 2009.
Scott Brown became the 41st Republican vote on Feb 4, 2010, so Democrats had a supermajority in the Senate from Sept 24, 2009, to Feb 4, 2010. During that time period the Senate was in session and voting for a total of 24 days. The Republicans filibustered 241 times in the first 2 years.

I’ve thought for a long time I was alone in understanding what the White House plan was. I do policy analysis for a living, so I’m steeped in it all, but the comments below reinforce this. One DOES have to do some work in democracy – it is not a spectator sport nor will it be spoon fed. Oh, Willard can spout his five point plan because it has no substance. Easy as pie. But if you really want to know what the goals and objectives are for the next four years of SERIOUS planning, you do have to look at what is readily available.
It’s the same gripe I have about single payer supporters and the whine that there is no “public option” in ACA. Oh? Really? The High Risk Pool – available readily to anyone with a pre-existing condition – has been a public option since July 2010. You REALLY need it spelled out as a public option since the President made it clear it was open to all BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT?
Take a few minutes to find out for yourself what’s going on. Democracy and policies do not resolve themselves into sound bites. If that’s the level of insight you want, well, maybe you’re better off with the other guy.

Check Obama’s web site and yes, he does about his plans for the next 4 years though he must continue to outline it at every campaign stop from now until the elections. Keep in mind though, that campaigns events mainly attract supporters so it’s better to put his plans in Ads and go on TV to talk about them.

THANK YOU FOR THE TRUTH!
I feel like the whole media has turned into Fox News.
What a nightmare.
There is no honor in journalism anymore.
I would think that is one of the signs a democracy is dying.

Thank you Miss Jones. Great article as usual. We need more people like you to get out the truth.
I am on pins and needles every day I read the polls..Don’t think my high blood pressure can take much more of this election cycle.
Aside…Spouse will ask me on any given day, “Any new articles from Sarah today?” Keep them coming, please.

I feel the same way. I’ve had blood pressure issues with this campaign with all the lies, corruption, biased pundits and extreme lack of journalism. I have to check in with PoliticsUSA for sanity and reality checks. The US public has been so dumbed down, it’s frightening!
Any woman, person of color, gay rights advocate, elderly person, mother with young children or college age children, or everyday struggling American citizen, or anyone with a health issue, or homeowner, or small business owner even thinks of voting for any GOP for any office will live to regret that decision.
Do your homework! This is one of the most important elections in a lifetime. Make sure you know the facts. Check the records of the officials. And ask yourself why Romney is so secretive? Why did he scrub his Massachusetts records after leaving office? What’s in those tax returns when he expects to have the power to determine yours? What can you trust? What do you know for sure? What’s been consistent is that he schemes to get hardworking money from others for his own pockets and others like him. He lies consistently. What is his connection in South America? Several million invested in Bain from South American investors. What’s going on? Pay attention. Please wake up Americans!
Thank you Sarah for your fine journalism and continued pursuit of facts and truth. Brilliant!

I think the MSM does this to keep their ratings up, and the fact is that they are corporate owned which means they have to spin the facts. I turned off my TV and read blogs like this which keeps me better informed and educated. Thanks for the great work!!!

Thank you so much! I have been watching reputable pollsters try to figure out how on earth to create a “poll of polls” when so many are highly slanted Republican ones. Apparently the “bandwagon effect” works well for the GOP’s low-info, highly needy voters, so a strategy of faking more and more polls is being used.

I liked the article. It’s scary that we have such a fairly large unsuspecting public that’s lapping up all the Romney and Republican lies. There is something more than dumbness or blind-faith involved here. Does seem like the Republicans don’t want meritocracy at all. Their strategy of “lie left right and center and call anyone who questions as liars” is so obvious.

I think the media is trying to manufacture a close race so they have something to do. No one I know is voting for Romney… all his rallies are virtually empty… Paul Ryan couldn’t fill a boyscout troop tent… and if you mention their name to a republican woman… you see teeth and hear hisses.

Could they be paying people to come to the rallies ? I wouldn’t put it past them…
Romney seems to have used the Gish Gallop technique in the first debate.

Remember that 8-10 point bounce Romney got after the convention when he brought the party together into one giant Ayn Ryan tea cup? Yeah, neither do I. Remember Nicolle Wallace’s (didn’t vote for McPalin) admission from 2008? I daresay Ms. Wallace will have Republican company in 2012. Mitt’s not fit to serve as CIC and we progressives/liberals are not the only ones that see that.
What we’re seeing is media–mentum – corporate 1% hound dogs baying at the moon. Traitors.

Here are just a few of Romney’s Quotes from the last couple times he ran for public office….SEE if YOU can see the hypocrisy and FLIP FLOP
“I believe that abortion should be safe and legal in this country. I have since the time that my Mom took that position when she ran in 1970 as a U.S. Senate candidate. I believe that since Roe v. Wade has been the law for 20 years we should sustain and support it.”
-Mitt Romney
“As a result of [my campaign's] discussions and other interactions with gay and lesbian voters across the state, I am more convinced than ever that as we seek to establish full equality for America’s gay and lesbian citizens, I will provide more effective leadership than Ted Kennedy.”
-Mitt Romney
“I think people recognize that I’m not a partisan Republican—that I’m someone who is moderate, and that my views are progressive.”
-Mitt Romney
SO those of you who support this Romney should NOT be supporting the one currently running for President and vice versa……JUST SAYIN.

If Obama had a plan he might not have felt compelled to mail out millions of copies of it less than 2 weeks before the election. He might not have felt it necessary to tell the Iowa newspaper that his plan was off the record. He might have talked about his plan instead of spending 99% of his time talking about his opponent. You are all kook-aid drinkers.

Romney is the one feeding You People the Kool-Aid and that’s a fact. He is setting You People up with his constant lies and flip-flops. He tells You People what you want to hear so that You People will vote for him blindly. You People are the uneducated, lazy, poor people who are a part of the 47% that he doesn’t care about. President Obama cares for you too even if You People don’t like him. Maybe You People are racist and only focus on his skin color. Romney doesn’t have a chance to win this election except MAYBE by using voter suppression and cheating. These voting polls will be monitored so we’ll see who our Commander-in-Chief will continue to be.
