Of Tar Babies And Presidents: The Racist Strategy To Demean Obama
By: RmuseAug. 3rd, 2011more from Rmuse
In nearly every country on Earth citizens of most nations feel a sense of unity borne of nationalism that transcends religious bigotry and racial differences, and it is crucial to a country’s survival during times of conflict and prosperity. After the terror attacks on 9/11, the sense of unity felt by nearly all Americans was reminiscent of the aftermath of the attack on Pearl Harbor that marked America’s entry into World War II. Today, there is no unity of will to move the country forward and in an effort to keep the country divided, Republicans have used every means possible including fear of immigrants, Islam, and especially an African-American sitting in the Oval Office. It does not matter if President Obama’s detractors questioned his birthplace, religion, or patriotism, the basis has always been one of race and it informs just how little America has really progressed in its 200-plus years of existence.
On January 1, 1863 President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation that freed 3.1 million slaves and it started the long arduous journey toward true equality for African-Americans that has never materialized to this day. If fact, Lincoln’s proclamation did very little to change racial prejudice against African-Americans and it continued unabated until the Civil Rights movement. Even after the Civil Rights Act in 1964 outlawed racial discrimination and segregation of African-Americans, the bigotry and racial prejudice continues. The lesson is that there is no way to legislate racial bigotry out of the population despite the best intentions of well-meaning lawmakers. By now, it is well-publicized that Representative Doug Lamborn (R-CO) said dealing with President Obama in the debt ceiling negotiations was “like touching a tar baby,” and his comment has caused outrage from Democrats and decent human beings that led him to apologize to the president. Lamborn sent a personal letter to President Obama “apologizing for using a term some find insensitive,” and although there is no way of knowing if Lamborn’s apology was sincere or not, the wording suggests he is not really sorry for the remark, but sorry he was caught on tape.
Whether Lamborn knows it or not, the term “tar baby” is a derogatory remark that most Americans find insensitive regardless if it was accidental or not. Lamborn claimed he should have used the term quagmire, but he did not and there is a simple reason; he is a racist. It does not matter what word he said he should have used because the first word that popped into his bigoted mind was a substitute for the word nigger. It flowed so easily for Lamborn that he probably never realized he used it because his mouth said exactly what was in his mind. There is no doubt that Lamborn or his kind would never use that term for a white man regardless the contentiousness of negotiations. He may have called a white president a jerk, an asshole, or a dirt bag, but he would never call them a tar baby.
As soon as Barack Obama won the election in 2008, bigots in the Republican Party began making snide, racist remarks meant to demean the president and it has continued without pause. During the healthcare reform debates, teabaggers and Republicans accused the president of stealing white Americans’ money to pay for “his homies” health insurance. When the Democratic representatives marched to the capital to vote on the health law, protestors threw racial epithets at Black representatives. On various conservative websites, racists posted photos depicting the President as an African tribal chief or medicine man. When the president instructed the DEA to back off medical marijuana users, the chatter was that he was repaying the “bros” in the ghetto for their votes. The racial hatred for the president is not really the issue, but defines the sentiment of the country.
Within a day of the president taking office, Mitch McConnell stated that Republicans highest priority was making President Obama a one term president. McConnell has repeated the comment in spite of the president’s policies that can best be described as Centrist for working with the business community, Wall Street, Insurance Industry, and the banking industry. President Obama has presided over the lowest tax rates in over 60 years and has been strong on defense but he still gets criticism as being un-American. Un-American is just code for African-American and it explains the birther movement meant to delegitimize the president as wrong, foreign, or not like us. In other words; not white.
There will always be bigots among us and instead of dwindling numbers, there appears to be an increase in racism in America. It is not that there are more racists; they have never gone away. The problem with racial hatred is that it is passed down generationally and will never go away completely. A sociologist once said that the only way to eliminate racists was to exterminate entire families much like one kills off a canine bloodline to eliminate genetic deficiencies. Although racial bigotry is not genetic, it is ingrained in adults who inculcate it into their children. Many educators claim tolerance training and acceptance will eradicate racism over time, but their argument does not take into account that regardless what a child learns in school, it does not follow them home. If a child learns tolerance and acceptance in school and goes home to parents who are bigots, they remain bigots. In fact, the concept of claiming our children are learning tolerance and acceptance itself is racism shrouded in kind terminology.
If every American is equal, there is no need to be tolerant of anyone whether they are African-American or gay. Equality means equality and every time schools tell children they have to be “tolerant” of a minority, they learn they are superior and have to put up with the inferior race. Racism is endemic in America and no amount of tolerance teaching will change it. No school-age child or adult will see another human being as being equal if they have to tolerate them. The solution is not a simple one, but a good start is to seriously make equality normal and not something to legislate or force on anyone. The government or schools cannot teach tolerance when the law does not treat every American equally.
There is no magic bullet to kill racism, but when a legislator, conservative pundit, or Fox News employee makes racist remarks, they must be terminated immediately. There is no doubt that if Barack Obama or Al Sharpton called Mitt Romney or Michele Bachmann a honky or cracker, there would be rioting in the streets. Yet, when a Republican or Fox News employee makes racist comments, they are excused if they make an apology. There can be no double standard.
There must be zero tolerance for any American who uses racial slurs or discriminates against a racial minority or else bigotry will continue until the country is torn apart by a race war. If any American thinks racism is not rampant in America, look at some Southern states that glorify the Civil War and still fly the Confederate flag. That flag represents slavery and is used by hate-groups like the KKK and various militias in the north and the south. Racism is a disease that will not be eradicated any time soon and it does not help when a member of the House of Representatives throws out a racial epithet like tar baby when referring to the first African-American president. Mr. Lamborn cannot be sent to prison for using a racial slur against the president because unfortunately, it is not against the law. However, to teach the country that no bigoted remarks will be tolerated by a government employee, he should be forced to resign. It would not eliminate racism, but it would send a strong message that our leaders will not tolerate bigots. Unfortunately, with Republicans controlling the House where Lamborn is a member, he will not even be censured because he was just expressing the GOP’s sentiment and was caught saying what McConnell, Boehner, and the rest of the Republicans must be saying in private. How can anyone be so sure? Because of his poor excuse of an apology and the ease at which he called the President of the United States a tar baby.

It has been never ending since Obama took office. We have heard phrases that have not been used publicly for ages. Some phrases I was even unaware of.
But – we are only a generation removed from people who regularly referred to blacks as n—–s in public. My relatives spoke like this. While I have not heard that word used regularly lately, I am still blessed with relatives who voted for McCain because they could not bring themselves to vote for a black man. No other reason – just because he is black. This is so sad. I just don’t get it.

Lamborn knew what he was saying…Who but a bigot would have such language in their vocabulary? He should be sanctioned for this..but voted out for sure!
Stretch topic..yesterday , on the msnbc program with Al Sharpton..pat buchanan called the President ‘boy’ x2 and your boy’ about Rep cleaver…. Msnbc must be contacted to remove buchanan at once..no apologies he is a bigot also! Tell them we will be contacting their sponsors, too!

I saw that also and had it in mind to include in my original post and got a bit sidetracked. Yes – Buchanon is a racist – sometimes he hides it for awhile but sooner or later it seeps out and then he does his cat in a litter box routine and it gets covered up.
I do not know why MSNBC has him on as a credible guest. I watch that channel and like it – there are some great hosts on MSNBC – but Buchanon should not be there.

I watch Al Sharpton daily but as soon as I see Buchanon come on I turn it off or mute the sound. I can’t believe the amount of disrespect the main stream media and congressmen are getting away with. I can’t listen to Steele either. It’s getting so as soon as the GOP opens their mouth to speak, I can’t listen to the toxic waste. It’s like a cancer spreading across America. I am thankful that Sharpton has been given a platform. He tries to keep it real. Hopefully he’ll be able to stay on.

Sounds like a freeloader who pays no taxes but is one the government dole. It is not racism, it is common sense to realize that it is an individual responsibility to take care of family and community. The only reason that our problem exists is the government buying votes ever since Lyndon Johnson. Getting food stamps and not paying sales tax is sick, even though getting other subsistence pay sales tax.

Yes, that is SO much more sick than corporations who made record profits and individuals who make over 250,000 paying ZERO dollars in taxes. I mean, SICK! Let them all starve; American exceptionalism baby.

What are you talking about. The conversation is about bigoted republicans that continue to call the President of the United States names that are creating a hostile environment. Wake up and pay attention, the middle class and poor are hurting as a Hispanic with a Master Degree as a Social Worker I see the people that need help and we do not need any more division in our country.

“Post-racial” US, my ass.
There are also the thinly-veiled references that would never employ an out and out racist term, but the dog whistles are still there–even in the media. I live in the south and know exactly what they are, a white person with whom other whites feel comfortable saying stuff they wouldn’t mention in “polite” company–and I always have to respond. Besides, who needs friends like that? Small minds, small lives.

Absolutely!!!
I ran into that when I had my business. I had to keep my mouth shut (they thought I was a “good ole boy trying hard to survive” and heard all of the REAL opinions of the regional business owners. That’s why they railed against “Quotas” and “Affirmative Action” – they said one thing in public, but the racist bigotry came out when they thought it was safe to talk.
I’ve heard just about every offensive term for minorities… and that from the lips of “educated” rich or upper-middle class folks too! I heard that sort of stuff nearly every week, and sometimes several times a week.
You could tell the ones who weren’t so racist because you’d see African Americans working in their businesses, and not just as cleanup or hard manual labor only. The others… well, they hired “the most competent people available”… always white males. They found some REALLY creative ways to hide the fact that they’d used race and sex as first categories for hiring. One large company even was caught, and forced to hire minorities. They referred to one professional they hired as their “token ______”. The person they hired knew about it (I talked with him), but said he’d rather be token than unemployed.
When it became public knowledge I am American Indian (something I myself didn’t know until I was in my mid 30s), I lost just over 60% of my customers in about a month. That, combined with health issues, eventually killed my high-tech business (if they’d treated me right, I’d probably still be in business). A couple even railed at me for “deceiving them” regarding my identity. Of the customers I had left, it became far harder to get paid or paid on time, and I regularly had to ignore racist insults. Eventually I couldn’t take any more and because of needed surgery (which precluded working for several months), closed the doors. The last few years were not fun.

We need something with teeth like what “Color of Change”
“Media Matters” have done regarding Beck. I wrote a couple times to MSNBC regarding Pat Buchanan, this is not the first time for him. What is so galling is that he used Al Sharpton show which goes to show Pat Buchannan is a deep seated racist who shows no respect,he worked for Nixon, that says it all.

The media is such a big part of this as the more racist, biggoted rants, comments, get prime time play, without calling out that this wrong and saying exactly what it is. We need laws like in Canada where such language is promptly called out and not allowed on the air.
It says a lot about people who would pay millions to a vile, racist like Sarah Palin to spew her bile , even re cycled racist rants. We know and have seen from day one, racism has been a concerted stragety of the right to demean a bright, intelligent President, but what bothers me is that these people are willing to destroy our society just to satisfy their hate all neatly wrapped with a christian label.

Ever since the Obamas began residence in the White House, there have been various bloggers and commentators making hateful remarks, such as the one to the effect that the Obama family is living on the dole. That kind of comment shows what the ones making these remarks think about black folks in general. Their racism is extremely deep-seated and existed long before Barack Obama ever thought about entering the world of politics. It simply took the election of a man with visible and traceable African ancestry to bring it out into the open.

I cannot tell from this article whether or not Lamborn is a bigot.
But I can tell that the author is more interested in using the race card than in establishing an atmosphere of racial tolerance.
American society is very divided along racial lines. Schools are now more segregated than they were in the 50s. Church services remain the most segregated hour of the week for many people.
This level of social and residential seperation makes it difficult to the people of the respective races to blend and meet. Studies have shown that white children raised in color blind households are 85% more likely to choose racially homogenous play groups than African-American children are. This is because the latter are brought up to appreciate race as part of a person’s identity and to appreciate it as part of the person’s make-up.
There have been a lot of hostile and hateful racial remarks made, but please, let’s seperate the bigots and haters from those who are merely crude and from those who are clumsy.
Let’s treat racism as a disease and try to cure it. Let’s not crusade against individuals who are out of their depth on racial matters, but who are actually making a good faith effort toward full inclusion, even when that includes criticising people of a different race.
Anne
Aug. 3rd, 2011 at 1:10 pm
I’m sure you mean well, but there has been a constant pattern of racist remarks made about the Obama family. After some of the remarks have been publicized, with equally public and insincere apologies, how can anyone who makes subsequent public remarks not see how ugly and hateful those remarks are? Let’s not even get started on members of the Tea Party, who are famous for showing racist signs during their “demonstrations.” BTW, I am GLAD the author published this article, because we can never address the problem of racism unless we are brutally frank about it–especially when it’s clear that people are being publicly and blatantly racist. The ones who have sent racist e-mails and made these comments are the ones who have been using the race card. While there are undoubtedly those who only disagree ideologically with the president, there is simply no denying that a significant amount of the opposition stems directly from racism. There is also no excuse for this kind of disrespect, regardless of political ideology.

Every since President Barack Obama was elected, the media, pundits and government officials have claimed that there’s no racism involved in any of these attacks or points of disrespect. I remember when former President Carter came out and started saying these attacks were racist and everyone attacked him for making such a claim. Carter knew because he’s from the south from where it was born and widely used. He was not embarrassed to acknowledge exactly what was happening. I remember when President Obama called the Boston police officers “stupid” who arrested a 70 year old Black man who walk with a cane who was able to produce his license that he indeed was in his own home and not a burglar. In fact he was a Harvard professor and a friend of the President. Obama received heat across the country when it was seemingly obviously a racial incident. Obama tried to peddle it back for the good of the country with the ridiculous beer summit. No more was ever said. We have no idea of how much the President has actually had to keep tight lipped about for the sake of the country while the bigoted birthers ran rampant for nearly 3 years until Obama roasted Trump and officially produced his birth certificate on national television. The depth of racism has been extremely painful. The problem with America is that it’s easier to act like it doesn’t happen so therefore it’s allowed to fester and spread under that cloak. Sarah Palin, Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Michelle Bachman and a host of others fed racism to their bigoted base by the tons. Wait until the 2012 elections and you’ll see it at it’s worst. The Tea Party and the GOP held the whole country and the world economy hostage behind a core belief of racism. Even with the greed of corporate America and bought and paid for congressmen, the country has never seen anything close to what took place with this manufactured debt ceiling crisis. And President Obama, because he’s a man of character and intelligence refused to let the country go down like that in spite of what it meant to his Presidency. Country first. Now for the next round of fights with people who will destroy the country if we let them, to regain it’s control from a black man. RACISM is alive and uncovered for the entire world to witness! Let’s fight it in a progressive and productive way. Sponsors who support these networks that allow it should be boycotted. Our voices should be heard loud and clear on the bottom lines where people actually care.

“The problem with America is that it’s easier to act like it doesn’t happen so therefore it’s allowed to fester and spread under that cloak.”
THIS.
I grew up in the South in the 1950s, and little has changed with a lot of whites in my state. They practice racism, but don’t you dare say anything about it. If you do, then you’re the one playing the race card. Your comment reminds of AG Holder’s statement that Americans are cowards when it comes to having honest discussions on race. He was right. Not talking about racism and bigotry allows those like Pat Buchanan to feel comfortable displaying it in public. I noticed after feeling heat for calling President Obama a “boy” yesterday, that today on Morning Joke Buchanan wanted to claim that his use of the word in referring to the president had no racial overtones attached. Yeah, I’ll believe him when he believes that blacks and other people of color helped to build this country.

Are you kidding me!!! racism is not like cancer and should not be treated like a disease. It is a learned behavoir most often taught by parents and should be treated as a crime.
My children are hispanic and there has not been one day when they haven’t gone to school and called nigger, boarder jumper, spic and most recenlty they have been called an Obama. I can tell you first hand racism is alive and thriving in Quincy, Mass.
My sons hockey couch nicknamed him julio, I asked if my son was black would he have named him Tobey… He just laughed… When i asked another parent why they call my son nigger they said spic nigger, same thing isn’t it?
And for the record you can most definitely tell Lamborn is a bigot from this article… His words speak volumes.

langborn is a racist whether he realizes it or not. most teaparty people are also. racism can’t be cured by education, it’s way too ingrained. a lot of white people’s ancestor’s owned slaves or did nothing too stop the vile practice. what is mitigating racism to some degree is interracial marriage & dating. when you have a relative of a different race, it tends to broaden your horizon. the racism obama faces (the birther issue, accusations of being a muslim etc) are deplorable, but the real racism in america is the high level of incarceration of blacks & their high unemployment rate. wish obama would do something about this.

White Privilege by Rothenberg
Two Nations by Hacker
RacistAmerica by Feagin
Also Tim Wise has (had?) a blog that was excellent, and what he wrote was right on target.
The problem is, most people haven’t learned to spot racism and don’t realize what it’s really about. It has to become overt before it’s recognized – and there is a lot of covert racism throughout most of this country.

opps..hit the submit by accident…anyways. The agenda as it has been since day 1 is to MAKE OBAMA LOOK WORSE THAN BUSH!!! A MUST! A HAVE TO! Oh yes..and DO NOT CREATE JOBS so the people will be pissed at OBAMA!!! No matter what, BUSH WILL ALWAYS BE THE WORST PRESIDENT who SINGLE HANDEDLY DESTROYED THIS COUNTRY BEFORE HE LEFT with the help of the GOP!!!. I can’t even begin to tell you how much I loathe the man for getting away with murder. AND OBAMA IS PAYING FOR IT NOW. Too bad..he didn’t want to go after the war mongerer SO YOU GET TO PAY FOR IT. I often wonder why Obama protects Bush the traitor. And all the while the GOP makes no secret of how they intend to destroy him and this country if the rest of us don’t start hating this Pres or agree with the GOP policies. The fact that they ARE CRUSHING UNIONS because they tend to support Dems and fight for fair wages–proves it. The fact that GOP is crushing WOMENS PRODUCTIVE RIGHTS because they HATE opened minded smart women like Dems because they know this is a basic right–proves it! The fact that they DEMONIZE IMMIGRANTS because they tend to vote Democratic too and only want immigration reform–proves it. They hate people of color. The fact that they are DISENFRANCHISING MOST PEOPLE SO THEY CAN’T VOTE DEMOCRATIC–proves it. If this doesn’t bother you RW CONSTITUENTS I JUST DON’T KNOW WHAT WILL….The fact that they have obstucted EVERY JOB LEGISLATION THIS ADMINS HAS TRIED TO put through–proves it. Not once has a GOP constituent yelled at their leaders ASKING THEM WHERE ARE THE JOBS?
Why I wonder. The GOP plan was to file a bunch of lawsuits against this president thereby using up the time to distract so they DON’T HAVE TO CREATE JOBS.
This latest fake DEBT CEILING madness was also a ploy so THE GOP DID NOT HAVE TO CREATE JOBS ONCE AGAIN!!!!! But continually said it to Obama! Why the hell did Obama at that point not say WHY DON’T YOU ASK THE GOP WHY THEY KEEP FIGHTING LEGISLATION TO CREATE JOBS???? WHY MR. PRESIDENT DID YOU NOT SAY THAT TO THE PEOPLE??? Its all part of the game plan. This GOP has made upf their mind YOU WILL NOT GET ANY WORK. NOT FOR A LONG TIME. THEY need to make you suffer so you can get so mad you WON’T VOTE DEMOCRATIC. So you can blame Pres Obama. AND NOT THEM.
They have destroyed 1.6 millions jobs THE WHOLE TIME saying to this president..where are the jobs?
Can I ask you GOP constituents why you’re not all SCREAMING AT THE TOP OF YOUR LUNGS AT YOUR LEADERS AFTER WATCHING THEM do what they did. Do you honestly think there is something positive for you in all this??? I mean really???
Do you think you wll NOT be impacted? You won’t if you’re a millionaire! I’m trying to figure out how you think they have YOUR BEST INTEREST AT HEART. They’ve made it real clear THEY DO NOT INTEND TO NOR WILL THEY EVER TAX THE CORPS OR THE RICH..McConnell –the meanest GREEDIEST senior citizen in the world WOULD do this on the backs of SENIORS and not blink an eye. The man disgusts me. I guess there are no RW constituents who are seniors. THE GOP DOES NOT CARE ABOUT YOU SENIORS. YOU CAN ROT STARVE AND DIE FOR ALL THEY CARE. They’ve made that real clear by their actions. So there you have it in a nutshell. Just once I’d like to hear one of you tell me what the GOP has done for you as a citizen of this United States. So I can understand your justification for voting Repub. Just once. WITHOUT LYING PLEASE! crickets….I thought so.

They dole out hate in the name of Jesus. lamborn is loved by all the hypocritical buybull thumping extremists around here. I encourage everyone to call his local office at 719-520-0055 and voice your disapproval of his comments. I called yesterday and when I said lamborn’s comment was appalling and racist the snippy little tool that answered the phone told me that was just my opinion. I told him he ought to hop on the internet and he would see most everyone agrees with me. He then said well the congressman apologized and so it’s done, move on. I told him the comment was appalling and that I was embarrassed that he represented my state. By then I was somewhat PO’d and told him lamborn was nothing more than a racist pig and that pretty much concluded the call.

I have bi-racial grandchildren. One of my daughter-in laws is bi-racial, and one of my daughter-in-laws is White. I cannot tell you how hurtful it is to have to explain to your grandchild, why people are calling the President of the United States a tar-baby. I cannot explain to you how I felt when I sat with my family and watch the teaparty display such hatred for a person because of the color of his skin. I have to let them watch tho, so that they can learn how NOT to treat people. I have wiped many tears from my eyes and theirs because of the thinks they see and hear. But I also show them the beautiful side of the love their parents have for them. I also teach them that no matter what people say about them, that they are strong and beautiful and can be anything they want to be. Just like President Obama. Through their eyes and their parents love for each other, I can see a brighter future.

I’m am not speaking to all white people, because there is beautiful people in all race. But unto to those in the republicans making all those bad remarks of blacks, They need to check there own self’s. They were brought up ignorant and all ways will be ignorant. You take that word tar and turn it around, And what do you have? A bunch of rat’s eating the crumbs off the poor and needy. and sitting back laughing under your nasty raw skin. I’m Quite sure when God created The Black man, He want this group of people to be well done. So get over It.

Im so sick of this BS…what will it take for people to understand that we are all God’s children. I am not a color! Colors define inanimate objects like shoes and cars. Our skin color is dictated by the expression of 1 gene-melanin. How can we base so much hate and repulsion on one small insignificant gene? Grow up America!

I predicit between now and the election that someone mainstream will use the “n” word when referring to the President. I wouldn’t be surprised if in private Limbaugh and his buddies the Koch brothers already refer to him as that.

This country has developed a reverse bias. The white male is stuck in it.There is just as much if not more when it comes to jobs etc then to see qualified men get turned down for reasons none other than instead of hiring the most qualified on brains we hire because of skin color

I work in government. White clients ALWAYS want to be serviced by a white employee and ONLY want to see Aryan type whites in positions of power even when the minority is the most qualified. THEN they have the nerve to complain about poor service when THEY were the ones who ONLY wanted an Aryan blonde in the position in the first place.
Go figure! White people seem to love incompetence as long as the incompetence is coming from a fellow white person yet they sit and complain about the poor service but STILL want a white person in that position.
This sh-t is ludicrous!!!!!
