I’m a retired GA social studies teacher. I taught civics, world history, and U.S. History for over 30 years until 2009. Many of the young people in America today took civics in high school and have been exposed to the way the U.S. government works and to the nation’s history. The problem I began to see more and more as the years passed by was the influence the far right fundamentalists had on what their kids believed. I found that the kids could learn the material, but the influence of their families, ministers, Fox News, and the GOP had the greatest influence on what they “believed” about the government. For example, they know that no U.S. president is a dictator, but when they are fed a constant diet by the aforementioned groups/persons of how PBO is “abusing” his powers under the Constitution, they believe it. I seems to be a form of indoctrination. Plus, it doesn’t help that the media here in GA is so intimidated by the GOP that it is afraid to reveal its real goals for the state/country. The year I retired, I actually had a student tell me that even though he had seen the information I provided that debunked one of Rush Limbaugh’s lies, that he and his father still thought that Limbaugh was right. One has to ask one’s self how one can get through to people of this sort. GA is full of these types of people, young and old. The only conclusion I have reached about them is that it will take something major, and personal, that is the result of republicans’ actions before they will realize how much they’re being misled and lied to, but I fear that by then it may be too late.
