The Hate-Filled Self-Martyrdom of Pat Buchanan
more from Hrafnkell Haraldsson
If you go to Pat Buchanan’s website, you will come to an introductory page that says in big letters, ‘right from the beginning.” Of course, this has a double meaning, indicating a position on the right of the political spectrum, but also right in the sense of correct, or opposed to “wrong.” Taken together, the words indicate that the “right” is the “right” position, and that therefore, Pat Buchanan is right and has been right all along (something Mitt Romney, perhaps, cannot say).
Pat Buchanan, who believes minorities have inferior genes, and that women are “less equipped psychologically” to succeed in the workplace, has always been an outspoken and polarizing figure. He was a hero to my father, a South Carolina racist. My father saw him as someone – perhaps the only someone – who could save our country from scary brown people.
It’s not unusual to find messianic tendencies in our political – particularly our “right” political candidates, but when combined with this candidate’s long history of bigotry and racism, you have to wonder about such a claim.
Is it really “right” to be bigoted and intolerant? Is that really a good thing? It might be if you use the Bible as a guide, but the Founding Fathers did not use the Bible. They developed something called the U.S. Constitution, which is something completely different. The Constitution certifies that we are all equal; that we all have an equal right to the pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness; that we are all of us equal before the law. Later amendments correct certain flaws found in the original document, for example, the claim that blacks are only three-fifths of a person, and ensure that women, for example, can vote and are equal to any man.
We fought a Civil War over slavery, a war that the North won and the South lost. Slavery was abolished. Slaves were freed. The Fourteenth Amendment ensured that Constitutional freedoms would henceforth apply also to states, updating the Constitution in light of a Confederacy that enshrined a slave economy and the ownership of human beings based on skin color. Both the Bible and the Constitution had failed black Americans but the Constitution was corrected. The Bible, which had been used to defend the institution of slavery and is still being used in some circles for that purpose, has not been, and will not be, updated. It persists in demanding an America that the Constitution forbids.
Pat Buchanan stands squarely at the center of this conflict, demanding an America that can no longer be. It was the American inhabited by people of my father’s generation, an America enshrined in regional and religious attitudes, an America become increasingly the province of Republicans and Tea Partiers. Pat Buchanan, it will be remembered, defended the slave-owning Confederacy. He has somehow convinced himself – and wants to convince us – that “both sides were right”, as he explained to MSNBC’s Chris Matthews back in 2010.
Watch the video from Media Matters:
Naturally people are upset about Buchanan’s racism. They have complained about him to MSNBC, wondering why a racist is being given a forum. As the Southern Poverty Law Center explains on its blog on October 26,
Following Buchanan’s Saturday appearance on James Edwards’ racist radio program “Political Cesspool,” to promote his new book, Suicide of a Superpower, Color of Change and Media Matters for America initiated a call for MSNBC to terminate Buchanan’s position.
Color of Change said, explaining their position:
“For years, Pat Buchanan has passed off white supremacist ideology as legitimate mainstream political commentary. And MSNBC continues to pay him and give him a platform on national TV to do it. Buchanan has just published a book which says that increasing racial diversity is a threat to this country and will mean the ‘End of White America.’This weekend, to promote his book, he went on a white supremacist radio show whose host has said things like ‘MLK’s dream is our nightmare,’ and ‘interracial sex is white genocide.’ Buchanan has the right to express his views, but he’s not entitled to a platform that lets him broadcast bigotry and hate to millions. If MSNBC wants to be seen as a trusted, mainstream source of news and commentary, it needs to fire Buchanan now.”
Media Matters said:
“For too long, your network has ignored Buchanan’s bigotry. But, enough is enough. MSNBC has the power to send a message — that it will not tolerate bigotry by its employees, on its airwaves or off.”
Also unsurprisingly, Pat Buchanan is taking up the martyr’s cross. Look what he wrote a post called “Hate and Bigotry Target Buchanan” on his Suicide of a Superpower blog on October 26, accusing (what else?) his critics of hate and bigotry:
Two-left wing groups, Color of Change, with eight known members, and its co-conspirators at Media Matters—self-endowed Orwellian censors–are attempting to gag and have Patrick J. Buchanan fired as an MSNBC Political Commentator as his new book, Suicide of a Superpower: Will America Survive Until 2025?, soars in sales. (The book has been a top nonfiction bestseller at Amazon.com since it debuted last week.) Using charged racist language, gross misinterpretations, out of context quotes, and sugar-coated anti-Catholic sentiments, Media Matters has written 16 vile posts in the past 12 days in an orchestrated campaign of hate and bigotry.
And others on the “right” are defending him. Buchanan has some of the usual defenders, including Judson Phillips, who no doubt sees his livelihood, which prospers on hate, threatened by the idea that everyone is equal. Judson Phillips claims that it is not Pat Buchanan who is racist, but Color of Change, saying “They are a very anti-American, far left group.” Buchanan’s inteviewer inevitably becomes the bad guy – Chris Matthews, grifter Phillips insists, “looks like he picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue” and MSNBC, the host network (who ditched Keith Olbermann to show how far left they are), “is so far to the left they are ready to capsize.”
It’s both amazing and educational that hate and bigotry to not qualify in the “right’s” lexicon as hate and bigotry, but opposition to hate and bigotry do.
On November 3 we see Pat Buchanan elevated to the position as “the statesman opposed to the mob” trying to destroy him. On Buchanan.org, Tom Piatak of Chronicles Magazine wrote the following glowing words in support of Buchanan:
For two decades now, Pat Buchanan has been warning us of the dangers our country faces…and the loss of a common faith and common culture threatens our national unity.
Translation: In other words, we’re no longer all white Protestant Christians who hate black people.
Piatak claims, “Pat Buchanan was called many names for raising these issues, but he has been right and his critics have been wrong…The book…challenges, head on, the regnant ideology of “diversity” and “multiculturalism.” And according to Piatak one of the important themes of Buchanan’s book is that “’Diversity’ has become a religion, the new religion of our elites, and it is ‘an ideology not terribly tolerant of dissent.’” An interesting perspective from somebody who is not terribly tolerant, period. Least savory of all, James Edwards complained in an email to supporters that we ought to be tolerant of intolerance,
“On Saturday night, we were rejoined on the air by Pat Buchanan for an interview that has caused the liberal media to go absolutely berserk. If you listen closely you can probably hear their howls, as we are currently under a vicious and hateful attack from the supposed advocates of ‘tolerance’ and ‘diversity.’ In fact, my cordial conversation with Pat has now become one of the top political news stories in America.”
It’s significant that people who wish to extend no tolerance, who wish to abolish all diversity, complain that speaking out against their anti-constitutional views is somehow wrong while their original utterances are “right.” But that’s the “right” for you, and Pat Buchanan epitomizes everything that is wrong with the “right” and has for a long time. We shouldn’t be surprised by his self-martyrdom (it’s institutional after all) and he shouldn’t be surprised that we don’t approve of his intolerance. He should only be surprised that we took so long to do something about it.

Buchanan is a shrill, bigoted fool who should have been given the boot a long time ago. If keeping him on MSNBC is their attempt to show balance, then it’s an exercise in futility. He is indisputably on the wrong side of issues concerning race, as well as others, and giving him a voice to express his toxic nonsense only gives him an undeserved dignity.

HH,
Thank you for another excellent article – Buchanan has been an obnoxious bigot for my entire adult life – his hate and bigotry must be taken off the air – he was a young bigot, now he is simply an old has-been bigot with nothing to offer to the American public.
As far as Judson Phillips, he is DESPERATE…..the Baggerz never got traction here in Music City, USA so he is dependent on the very few around Middle Tennessee and most of his “so-called support” is from outside the area – he has closed his law office here due to tax liens and now “pretends” to be the leader of the Baggerz…..a failed lawyer and failed Baggerz.

I wrote this stuff (below) the summer of 09′; sometimes, I’m too lazy to re-write on something, and sometimes, I’m still as passionate about the issue for the same reasons. The world hasn’t changed so why change the words around? Anywhoo…here’s my 2 cents on Mr Patty-boy who was raised in a family who believed that John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara characters were “real” as role models of reality…sigh.
In my endeavor to understand why hate has become a “birth right” to a community that sees itself through the eyes of racial superiority, I turn to educating myself. One of the reads I’m plowing through is a history of the white nationalist movement called “Blood and Politics”, by Leonard Zeskind. It’s taken him probably 20 years to write this very comprehensive history book…it may take me all summer to get through it!
There are a lot of insightful moments in his book, like Pat Buchanan’s run for President; his VP pick was a black woman who was for all intent and purposes, a bigot! I digress…One notion that keeps repeating itself is the ideal held by white supremacist that they are a “distinct minority”. They/we are not talking statistics, but some kind of imaginary, romantic versions of what encompasses their “nation”. This white nation is only in their head–they have no distinct historical community that has dwindled into some kind of “minority” (unless you include slave owners). They have no common religion because many of them are pagans, not christian as we commonly believe (most are against man-made religions). They are from all kinds of ethnic back grounds–Swedes, Scots, Irish, English, German, Italian, Slavic, etc. They are merely a mythical culture based on “race self-identification who believe they live as outsiders forced to live inside a multiracial, international culture” (author). Their existence is based on conspiracy theory ideology…in other words, they’re bogus. But, they sure know how to rake in the $$$ when one of them throws a whites only rally where they happily sell their conspiracy literature, guns, fatigues, baseball caps, storage containers, everything a nation builder needs!
The more I read, hear, and watch politicians attempt to “talk” racist lingo (or code to the base) in radical tones, the more I realize there are fewer and fewer of them left to plead their case. Politicians are pinning their political hopes that these bigots will recruit and survive so they can vote in a block (look at how they put their hopes into Palin). However, the numbers are dwindling no matter how much they promote a Huckabee or the David Duke’s as “loyalist to the flag”. Their rhetoric is so exclusive, narrowly focused that they push people away while trying to mainstream their message. I venture that your everyday bigot really doesn’t have the guts, let alone vital energy, to pick up the gun and kill. Your garden variety of racist-bigot “separate but equal” crowd like to talk real loud, make rash statements, scare people (like the Buchanan family). They have the “mic” and are trying to sell the conspiracy they are a “distinct minority” who is kicked around and discriminated against by all these intruders on their birth right (Pat Buchanan on Rachel Maddow).
People like Pat Buchanan (and his sister, Bayh) are being admired as “outlaws”, like Bonnie and Clyde–racism gives them something/somewhere to out all their anger and hate. Yet, your garden variety racial bigot “club” all ran for the hills after that woman in southern AZ shot those drug dealers in a militia raid! All the sudden, they weren’t so “racist” any longer…
The white nationalist are bogus people trying to hang on to the past and are afraid of the old karma, what goes around comes around…yet, they pose a danger to society–they gave us Timothy McVeigh, didn’t they?

This is terrific writing Hraf. Indeed there were many who stood by Buchanan’s position in the 30′s through the 60′s as your father did. I think there is a difference where you grow up at in how you feel, my dad with his 8th grade education would never allow us kids to even consider a racist thought and he made that known. (We grew up in Michigan)
But the test of what we are is greater now than ever before. Before we just had those pesky blacks to beat on, now we have more races here than a good racist can imagine. And for the good racist there is much to hate. There are more races here now than ever before and this is the best time in America’s history to be a hater. Or should I say a fearmonger? And Buchanan seems to be profiting from it.
America has never been white. Oh sure it is predominantly white but not white. And what does it matter if that changes? Does America stand for white purity or for a free people? There is a difference. Of course we are no longer free in reality thanks to the financial groups that run our lives but at the base we are free to think as we like, hopefully for the betterment of the country not for the abasement of others. Buchanan needs to ask himself what the US stands for, not what he stands for.
Buchanan would be berserk if he lived in Alberta Canada. There, when an Indian or Pakistani immigrates in he also brings his parents, his cousins and all his relatives going back to 300 bc. Each is handed an Alberta healthcare card and the parents who are of retirement age are immediately given a pension. And worse, Alberta endures.

Sent to me as a joke email this am:
It was the coldest winter ever. Many animals died. The porcupines, realizing the situation, decided to group together to keep warm. This way they covered and protected themselves but the quills of each porcupine wounded its closest companions. After a while, they decided to distance themselves from each other and they began to die, alone and frozen.
So, they had to make a choice: either accept the quills of their companions or disappear from the Earth. Wisely, they decided to go back to being together. They learned to live with the little wounds caused by the close relationships with their companions in order to receive the warmth that came from the others. This way they were able to survive.
Moral of the story: The best relationship is not the one that brings together perfect people, but one where each individual learns to live with the imperfections of others and is able to admire the other person’s good qualities.
The real moral of the story:
LEARN TO LIVE WITH THE PRICKS IN YOUR LIFE.

I LOVE the name you gave this relic from a time that should never be repeated nor will it ever be. He is one of those longing for a country that never truly existed, because he cannot accept the multi-racial, multi-faith country we truly live in as of 2011. Everything about him exudes anger, hatred, and bitterness at the fact that America of 2011 is not the America of 1938, the year he was born.

Pat Buchanan is an evil sexist racist homophobic bigot piece of filth.
Why is he that way?
Religion
A hypothetical person has an X that they believe tells him/her to do things, and a part of their belief in X is an afterlife where everything is so much better than this. To get there they have to do everything that X tells them to which includes incredibly violent acts of evil.
Replace X with Barney The Purple Dinosaur.
Now replace X with (insert deity’s name here).
Do you really want people like this in our society driving our buses, taking care of our children, making decisions about national defense, roaming our streets armed with guns, etc.
X is an invention of the human mind with no basis in fact/science/reality beyond what any particular person prefers to believe. What if a person’s preference changes to something evil?
Do you see how this could be a problem?
Religious people have no moral responsibility whatsoever.
That’s why they can say they value life one moment, and then call for the death of people who don’t accept their imaginary friend the next.
Religions are fundamentally death cults that portray life as a miserable thing to be endured, and after you die you will get sky pie in the sky pie kingdom, and sit next to the pie god.
It does not surprise me at all that religious people don’t care about conservation, saving endangered species, preserving the natural world, or really doing anything constructive/positive. In their eyes all is filth and evil if it doesn’t come from a book that a bunch of uneducated sand jockeys who thought the world was flat wrote over 2000 years ago.

Pat Buchanan is an evil sexist racist homophobic bigot piece of filth.
Why is he that way?
If he is Religious, that means he is also a Preferential thinker.
What’s that?
Reality is not a preference, but is simply what is even if we do not know what that is at the time.
Science is the only one true way of knowing reality because science is non-biased in it’s discovery of facts which are pieces of reality that were once unknown, but now made known via scientific methods.
All the technology you enjoy today came about because of the scientific mindset of actively seeking answers to how reality works (FACTS), and using that information to solve problems. You cannot enjoy any form of modern technology, and object to scientifically proven FACTS like evolution without being a hypocrite.
Hypocrisy runs rampant with preferential thinkers because they only acknowledge and support the existence of pieces of reality (FACTS) that they prefer, invent delusions to explain knowledge gaps, and ignore and vilify the existence of anything outside of their preferences. Preferential thinking is a delusional mindset that ignores reality as it truly is, it is highly resistant to facts, logic, and reason, and inspires rampant stupidity, ignorance, and laziness.
Morals cannot be based on Preferential Thinking because in order for morals to work they have to be based on something real that falls outside of a person’s individual preferences.
Preferential Thinking is intrinsically evil, and Preferential Thinkers are dangerous because they have no moral responsibility whatsoever because they base their morals upon their own preferences instead of reality.
Religion is presently the most overt form of Preferential Thinking in society today.
Example: I wake up stupid one day, and embrace (insert religion here) despite the scientifically proven fact that all Religion is mind destroying garbage invented by Preferential Thinkers. I want to worship X as best I can, and I prefer to do so by killing anyone who doesn’t worship X. Since X is an invention of my Preferentially Thinking mind X approves of my bloodlust. I go kill a bunch of people in the name of X who have committed no crime greater than not holding the same Preferential Thoughts that I do. Since X is an invention of my Preferentially Thinking mind this makes X very happy, and because X is my moral guide I think my killing spree is wonderful.
Murder is not good for society, and there are scientific facts that support that assertion, but as I demonstrated a Preferential Thinker would ignore those scientific facts in preference of their preferences.
Preferential Thinking is very widespread, and it is not hard to find examples of it on the world stage. Aside from Religion, another relevant example of Preferential Thinking is stupid peoples’ attitude towards the middle and poor classes (99%), and their glorification of the rich (1%).
99% of America’s economy rest on the buying shoulders of the middle and poor classes, and yet the Republicans want to murder them with destructive social policies. The end result of their plans would be total economic collapse, and their rich overlords would lose everything. Without an economy all money and investments become worthless.
The Republicans prefer that their actions benefit their rich masters without negative consequence (Preferential Thinking), and thus behave in accordance to their preferences even though scientific facts (reality) shows how destructive that will be if they are allowed to get away with it.
