I have to disagree with the idea of hate as a balancer. The opposite of love isn’t hate, it’s indifference. And like Reynardine, I do believe we need more than love.

Max, I’m old enough to remember the “all you need is love, love,” days, and no it isn’t. It no more preserves our liberties than it preserves our fruits and vegetables. Whatever our concept of Deity is – She, He, It, or They (and I agree with the Etruscans that the number and gender of the Ultimate cannot be known), the agent part of it on this planet boils down to Us. We must act from benevolence, but it is not sufficient to be passively benign. No one was moreso than the Tasmanians; they watched helplessly while their infants were buried up to their necks and then had their heads knocked off by polo players. The only Tasmanian DNA left on earth comes from women raped by colonists; not a man nor a full- blooded child was allowed to survive.
Survival as a free people means being informed, being vigilant, being ready to act. Keep watch on your state legislatures. If two thirds of them bring petitions to Congress for similar amendments, a second Constitutional convention must be called – but once it is, there is nothing to keep it from running away. The Florida Legislature has called for a balanced budget amendment. Two other states have brought petitions for repeal of birthright citizenship, and a total of thirty other states have brought, or are bringing, petitions – fortunately so far diverse enough to fail to trigger a mandate. But “those clowns (upstate; downstate)” could start aligning any time. Watch it- and them.

The only cure for Darkness is Light.
The cold Word must yield to the warmth of the Goddess.
We have met the “Other” and it is us.
The more options you can see, the stronger your own safety net.
All you need is Love. But hate must still be given its rightful honor as the balancer.

In October of ’92, a friend of mine and I went to Salem to “see the elephant” for ourselves. I had already seen trial transcripts (for those not familiar with the trials, not all the accused were women and none were executed by burning, though Giles Cory was pressed to death while refusing to implicate others); being on the scene and viewing the places, accounts, and artifacts of these events was truly sobering. Many of the Founding Fathers, however, had grown up among those for whom such things were a living memory. Both the main body of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights contained safeguards against its happening again. The underlying traditions remained embedded in our culture, however. Indeed, without them, we would have had a far harder time justifying our extinction of Native Americans and our purchase, sale, use and abuse of Africans. And where are those traditions now? Well, they’re ba-a-ack.
There is a stealth movement afoot to call a second Constitutional Convention. If it succeeds, we could find any and all of our “guaranteed liberties” gone overnight. I am not about to outline what that means. Just picture Darkness at Noon, plus superstition. Just picture the Inquisition, with high-tech surveillance and spyware. Just picture our flag, striped with blood and without a single star. And then, keep watch on your state legislature. It may be later than we think.
