Town Hall Debate Style Presents a Challenge for Rude, Chronic Interrupter Mitt Romney
Wondering what to expect from Mitt Romney at Tuesday’s town hall debate at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York? Based on his interactions with voters at various events including a previous town hall, Romney’s going to have to work hard to reign in his rudeness and condescension. It’s one thing for him to do this to voters in small venues, on the rope line, or even to do it to the President as he did in the first debate, but he can’t afford to lose his cool with voters Tuesday.
Like this: Romney, sounding like a cross between an executive telling off an employee and a belligerent, power hungry parent to a child, took down a voter at New Hampshire Town Hall in August of 2011.
Watch here:
Romney, “You had your turn! You had your turn madam! Let me have mine. Hold- let me have mine! Yeah listen, I’ll give you the microphone in a moment but let me complete. I’m sorry, it’s my turn! You had yours, now it’s my turn. Would you please hold on a moment and let me finish. Okay, good. This is the answer!”
The woman is inaudible the entire time Romney is telling her that it’s his turn and she doesn’t have a microphone.
Romney proceeds to start in on his answer and then berates the woman some more, raising his arm up in a STOP signal repeatedly, “Ah look, let me speak, then you get to speak okay. Just hold on a moment. Just just hold on. I’m happy to have your question but let’s comp – oh, madam – hold on a sec. Hold on a second. Let me, let me tell ya’.”
Wow. Then Romney went into his “we balanced the budget every year” spiel without getting into how (15 percent cut in aid to cities and towns and 4 percent cut to education that ultimately resulted in a 24% jump in property taxes). He also gave the “I don’t want to borrow from China” sound bite, which is at best embarrassing given the recent revelations of his Chinese investments.
Here’s Romney on the rope line answering a question from a voter at a campaign event at the Nashua chamber of commerce on January 9:
The voter is pleading with Romney about healthcare, asking him not to repeal ObamaCare. He asks, “How’ve you been doing since then?”
She answers, “I don’t have healthcare and I’m scared.”
Romney smirks and starts to move down the line, telling her, “That tells you something doesn’t it, doesn’t it.” Smiling slickly, he moves away and begins talking to the next person.
But our voter isn’t done with him. She says, “But it hasn’t gone into effect yet sir. Your market doesn’t work for me, sir. I don’t have healthcare and I’m very frightened.”
Romney turns to her and says, “Alright, you want to listen or do you want to go on?”
She is saying, “I’m very frightened—”
And he interrupts her, smirking, “You want to go on or you want to listen?” as if she is an errant child.
She says, “Go ahead sir.”
Romney, “How does Massachusetts work?”
The woman explains that her colleagues have hope that they have access in Massachusetts. Romney says, “And who was the governor who put that into place?”
She says, “Why are you running away from it, sir, why are you running away—”
Moving away from her, Romney says, “No. No. I’m not. I’m very proud of it. Well, you don’t want to listen, okay.”
Yes, you may only listen to the Great Mitt, you may not ask questions or speak your mind. If you agree, you will be treated kindly but if you disagree or question, you are persona non grata.
Clearly Mitt doesn’t get it and it he should listen because he seems to believe that all Americans have access to healthcare through emergency rooms – that is his answer to getting rid of ObamaCare. Pre-existing conditions? Too bad. You’re covered under COBRA for a mere $650/month right? Gosh, that’s not even a day’s worth of gas for the jet. Man up, people.
Romney’s campaign said he was working on his temper but with Candy Crowley going rogue anything can happen.

Excellent article Sarah! I’ve got my fingers crossed that he’ll totally lose it. Even if he doesn’t, his arrogant attitude will come through loud & clear, it always does. It’s who he is.
Go Candy GO!

Robme doesn’t like being challenged, I noticed that in a radio interview he had in Iowa, and the interviewer was asking him about the contradictions of the Mormon religion on marriage, abortion and what he says on the campaign trail and kept pushing the pointasking for clairiffcation. He got up and walked out of the interview, then came back after a minute or so.
I hope PO applies the same method to him, he already thinks he superior and is not accustomed to being questioned or challenged only to giving orders. He needs a good smack down like the man child received form Joe Biden. Btw, did anyone take note of Ann Romney’s face during the second video..lmao, she looked liek she wanted to strangle the woman.

I’m so hoping he flips out on some poor voter in the audience. I know that’s terrible for the voter but people need to see the real Romney and I imagine there’s going to be a large television audience for this debate tomorrow. I want everyone to see what is written in the article. See what he is really like.

Mittens and QueenWannabee are the most arrogant condescending folks in America. Sure hope Mittens blows it when someone mentions SENSATA.
Thanks for great article, Sarah.

Let’s not forget his snotty attitude toward the teacher at the recent round table.
He is a CEO. In his mind, he employs us, not the other way around.
A CEO like Mitt does not consult the file clerk. A CEO like Mitt does not seek input from the receptionist.
A CEO like Mitt tells us how it’s going to be, and if we don’t like it, too bad.
A CEO like Mitt thinks the bottom line is the only thing that matters.
This is why the whole “we need a businessman in the White House” line of thinking is so wrong-headed.

Lady Romney doesn’t even try to hide her disdain for this peasant. (in the second clip).

Agree, I had to laugh when I saw her face, for a woman with so much moola and a country club lifestye, her face is so tough and hardened, no softness or real inner beauty revealed on the outside.

I’m a devoted fan. Small nuance – ‘rein in’ like a horse. ‘Reign in’ like a beauty pageant.

Not only does he look down his nose at the peasants, but he compares apples to oranges. States do not have to pay for unfunded wars. State budgets can’t be equated to the federal budget. And he asked how the person on the rope likes Mass Romneycare to imply that some version of that will exist when he works to repeal the ACA.
Lets get to facts and know that voters have intelligence and know when a candidate is manipulate the facts. Well, the smart voters do. It, unfortunately, there are voters that eat up his lies and manipulations lock stock and barrel.

Ann looks like she’d spit on that woman if she had the opportunity to do it off-camera.

Ann was never moved to compassion as she listened to the woman plead with Romney. She remained adamant through it all. Her facial expression never showed compassion. Very telling, to say the least.

Well, when Bill O’Reilly interviewed the president, it was the rudest interview I’ve ever seen and Mr. Obama doesn’t seem to realize that people are being rude to him, and tries to comply with them. Obama needs to stop being nice.
Does anybody remember that Pre-superbowl interview? Why did Mr. O do that? O’Reilly is a nobody to me.

I just hope the audience isn’t rigged and that Candy Crowley doesn’t disappear like Lehrer, but instead is strong and fair.
I do hope President Obama is able to crack the faux Presidential presentation and get to the real psyche of Willard Mitt “wanna be” Romney and show that his core is quite questionable!
God bless our President and the United States of America!
Vote for American democracy. Vote Democratic down the ticket.

This shows me that they don’t really listen to the people who are asking legitimate questions. They are so out of touch and I can’t wait for them to fail next month.

I don’t see how Romney can hide his condescension and rudeness, because it has been so much on display in interacting with potential voters and during the first presidential debate. He hates being challenged, not to mention being contradicted, as he showed not only with the teacher but also with the father in NYC who stated that the teachers’ union and parents have a good relationship. He did not even try to listen, and that’s an absolute MUST for someone who wants to be a leader. He and his Stepford wife have absolutely NO class, and no amount of money will change that.

Ooops, Sorry poster Anne, my finger hit dislike but I agree with your post 100%. Hoping to watch this debate tonight. I truly, honestly cannot see how any thinking person could vote for Romney. If republican policies work so well, why are all the Red states the poorest, most obese, lowest education levels, highest teen pregnancy rates etc etc?

What a shmuck and a douche…Why is a car salesman trying to be a politician, horrendous to watch and painful to listen to…???…God the republicans are so stupid if this is all they could muster up for a presidential candidate, sad…

Romney said 50 states have balanced budgets? What? 49 states have *laws* that require balanced budgets, but in reality almost none of them actually balance their budgets. If that is his standard, he’s off in lalaland.
www.cbpp.org/cms/index.cf...
31 states face budget shortfalls in 2013. Apparently, declaring a budget and not meeting it is good fiscal management for Romney.
