Interesting. It was 1975 that gave birth to the “I Found It” movement. Billboards proclaimed that “coming soon” was “I Found It”. What “It” was was Jesus Christ. It was the birth of the 700 Club, Televangelists, Falwell, the Christian Coalition, etc., etc. It was the outgrowth of “The Family” (those C Street people you’ve heard about) and its Campus Crusade. It swept the nation and ushered in the most pervasive evangelizing this nation has EVER seen. Your dreams were likely a reflection of some understanding you were getting of what was starting – and you were not wrong.

Liberal and progressive Christianity – that which was behind and in front of everything from abolition to ending child labor, from pacifism to labor rights, from women’s rights from voting to reproductive care, and in our day the Civil Rights and anti-war movements and GLBTQI rights- has been a reaction. The latter two had everything to do with REV. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and REV. William Sloane Coffin. They showed everyone the way to stand against reactionary politics that came out of reactionary religion.

OK – we were also behind Prohibition. Everybody makes mistakes…

There has been a reaction for years – decades – against this sort of Dominionism. It’s a long, dangerous, uphill work to oppose them, but it IS going on and IS the mainstream of Christianity in most quarters today, especially within Protestant denominations.

They do not speak for us, for the overarching faith, or for America. They are just plain WRONG, and they deserve to be limited in what arenas they are able to exercise their beliefs. They do NOT have special privileges because this is a nation of no religion at all, not a Christian one. That is what Jefferson wanted – what everyone wanted – at the founding of the nation. A land that is truly free from any one religious view giving room for those who have NO religious view as well.

The reactionaries need to get over themselves.They are entirely un-American in their pursuit of power over us all.

Jefferson’s motto was: “I have sworn, upon the altar of God, eternal hostility to every form of tyranny over the mind of man.” He understood that many forms of so-called religion are precisely that – forms of tyranny over the minds of man.

As a young woman, I yearned to become a Catholic. I longed for the rites and ritual, the music, the scents, the tradition. Then, as a convert at 23, I started to read about my chosen religion. Wow. That was a mistake. After learning way too much about Catholicism and Christianity in general, I’ve grown far far away from that religion. It’s very sad that something that could have been so beautiful and life-giving has turned into today’s version.

Granted there are many good people in these churches, but they’d be good people without the churches, too. And the bad ones just use the religion to gain power over others.
