Unbearable Grief: The Connecticut Elementary School Shooting
At least 26 people, including 18 children, were killed today when a gunman opened fire inside a Connecticut elementary school.
The shooter had two nine millimeter Glocks.
Please forgive my silence till now. I’ve been struggling with this since it happened this morning. It’s a helpless feeling to imagine the unbearable pain of these parents and families. My heart is breaking for them.
I know many of you are feeling as I am right now. Please be kind to one another, and send your thoughts and prayers to these families.
We will discuss gun laws another day, along with mental health policy. Today is not that day. For now, hold tight to your loved ones and try to find some solace where you can. Psychologists say that doing something can help alleviate the feeling of helplessness felt by the public at times like this, so as soon as needs have been expressed, we will post links.
In the meantime, we need to grieve as a nation. We need to admit that this is unbearable, that we can’t hold this kind of horror, that we want more than anything for this to be untrue.
But we must face what is, in order to address it.
If I could have anything for Christmas, I’d ask that these families be spared this grief, but the world doesn’t work that way. Is there any reprieve from such horror?
I get through moments like this with music. Amazing Grace, with its message that the soul can be delivered from despair through the mercy of God (insert your belief system here), is one of the songs that’s pulled me through tough times:
Feel free to share your coping strategies in the comments.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, who face an unthinkable tragedy.

I would love to share my coping strategies, but it is impossible. How does one cope after this except planning to get out of the madhouse? We already coped when a maniac killed 19 children 24 miles from my home, and Columbine, Giffords, Batman movie…maybe weeping is coping. sure doesn’t seem to work either.

Ditto a thousand times over. As a father of twin boys, I can’t imagine the pain that my wife and I would be going through if we sent them off and they were never to return to us again.
These parents are in hell right now.
I am taking the day off to be with my kids.

I hope I am wrong. That’s the wrong word hope.I want to be wrong but given the state of some peoples minds, those that are easily manipulated with all this talk of end of days I think e will see more of these tragedies.I joke a lot about people believing in this stuff but…My heart goes out to the families.I have nothing else to say.

On this same day, a knife man in China attacked and cut down a score of schoolchildren. It strikes me that violence towards children is on the increase. I hope not.

How many times must we put aside our discussion of gun laws for another day? more than 30,000 Americans lose their lives every-single-year to gun violence. Yes, offer your condolences, yes hold your children tighter, yes cherish your families. And at the very same time begin the conversation with local leaders, state legislatures and the federal government to stop the insanity of misinterpreting the 2nd Amendment as an anarchic all the weapons you can buy free for all.The 2nd amendment says “well-regulated”.
The economy was high-jacked by Wall Street, discourse in DC has been hijacked by Republicans and meaningful change re: the 2nd Amendment has been hijacked by the NRA.
Change has to begin today to stop tomorrow’s sorrow grief and bloodshed.

Ct is ranked number 5 in strict gun control laws. Another fun fact democrats fail to mention is the areas with the most gun control laws have the highest crime rates. That’s a statistical fact. The fact that democrats will exploit this story for political gain is very telling.

The shooter has been identified as Ryan Lanza, 24, and it is said one of his parents has been found dead in the home. He last resided in New Jersey, but went to school where he committed the murders.

And the NRA just keeps collecting money and threatening legislatures. It is the same old song. No one can change this culture’s love of guns and violence.
