Right Wing ‘Patriots’ Reserve the Right of Free Speech Just for Themselves
There are many opinions on what constitutes personality, but it can generally be considered to be the particular combination of emotional, attitudinal, and behavioral response patterns of an individual, and in fact, can be attributed to a nation in certain circumstances. People from around the world typically have two distinct opinions about America; on one hand, it is the government and its policies that many foreign people either love or hate, and on the other hand, it is the American people that define America. For the most part, the American people are good, decent folks whose primary focus is, like most human beings, taking care of their families and living peaceably, but there is a loud, very vocal segment of the population intent on imposing their dysfunctional worldview borne out of their belief that Americans are exceptional and infallible according to god’s holy dispensation, and it provokes them to disregard the rights and autonomy of individual citizens and foreign governments alike, and it is just one reason America suffers from personality disorder.
There were two specific events over the past week that highlight why Americans are not all exceptional, and it is on account of intolerance for dissent and belief that an American’s will supersedes that of a sovereign nation. To be clear, this is not an indictment of all Americans, but it does impugn a mindset in this country that hypocrisy and double-standards are part of Americans’ personality. The outrage over a television personality’s criticism of America’s love affair with guns instigated a movement to deport him, and a sovereign nation’s law restricting American’s from adopting their children incited a condemnatory statement from the State Department after complaints from irate childless American citizens.
One of the hallmarks of so-called hard-right “patriots” is their immutable adherence to the Constitution and all of its tenets, and yet they reserve the most important right, that of free speech, for themselves. After the tragic massacre at Sandy Hook elementary school in Connecticut, television personality Piers Morgan spoke out against the Constitution’s 2nd Amendment and the Wild West mentality of many of its supporters, and because he was exercising the Constitutional right of free speech, a phalanx of patriots demanded his immediate deportation for expressing his opinion.
This is not a rare occurrence, or something reserved for British television hosts. This column’s author fields on average 10 to 15 death threats per week from uber-patriots and evangelical fanatics for expressing an opinion that does not comport with their vision of America, and the irony is that each threat of violence is related to an alleged attack on their Constitutional rights. There is a reason the Founding Fathers gave freedom of religion, speech, and the press the top spot in the Bill of Rights, and that they did not make them conditional on agreeing with conservatives, because the idea of “freedom” is not conditional, at least not in a free society like America. Still, conservatives have set conditions on speech dependent on whether or not one agrees with their views on guns and religion, and it has come to define America’s personality as intolerant and spreads the message that speech is not free if it is anti-gun or anti-god.
Yesterday, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law banning the adoption of Russian orphans by U.S. families as retaliation for the Sergei Magnitsky Act passed by Congress and signed by President Obama which imposed sanctions on Russian officials allegedly involved in the death of a whistle-blower. The reason for the ban is irrelevant because as a sovereign nation, Russia has the right to self-governance irrespective of childless Americans’ wishes or belief their rights supersede a foreign government’s internal affairs. The incident highlighted many Americans’ belief that their individual wishes override all others, foreign or domestic, and it portrays all Americans in a selfish, arrogant, and entitled light that has become the overriding personality trait of this country’s people. It is true of gun rights activists, religious liberty fanatics, anti-government maniacs, and bigots of all shapes and sizes, and it is on display for the entire world to see. It is a travesty that all Americans are portrayed as self-indulgent and entitled, because it is not an accurate characterization of the American people, but it is the one that the world sees more than any other.
Americans are basically good people, but there is this belief borne of selfish motivation that fairness and equality are reserved for a specific segment of society, and they are not reticent to restrict the rights of others, foreign or domestic, in pursuit of their own wishes that transcends freedom of speech, religion, or gun rights. It is prevalent in Republican politics that despite the will of the people, a small contingent of anti-tax activists will hold the economy hostage to protect the rich, and religious extremists will dictate when women have children, who can marry, or whether or not the bible is the law of the land.
This country cannot continue as a democracy, or world leader, as long as a few extremists dictate their will on every American. It is unclear exactly why or when many Americans began believing providence granted them dictatorial rights of who is entitled to Constitutional freedom of speech, or which sovereign nation’s laws a are acceptable to Americans, but it is becoming more prevalent every day and it is unfortunate that this country, clearly the greatest nation on Earth, is being characterized by the dregs of American society.

I agree; we are being defined by the dregs of our society, however, I prefer the term “dreck” as the proper name for these particular dregs. They are the excrement that no one wants to step in or on as they stinks up everything…
What’s that old expression? Who died and left you in charge? Or is it “Who died made you god?” Either way.
Apparently, the fundamentalist christian right-wing voting block did not get the memo on sarcasm or irony…
Oh yeah, I forgot. They can not function unless everything is taken literally; that is due to their poor grasp of change as a constant in/of/around reality, as well as their over-whelming lack of communication skill*.
*least we forget fearless leader, Sister Sara, the born-again “Esther” who’s word salad they actually “understood”…As I said, DRECK!

Actually, “dreg” and “dreck” come from a common West Germanic root, the first Ango-Saxon and the second German, for the same thing: the first, coarse cast from fermentation, containing pulp, mash, and sometimes bugs. After the brew/must is taken off this cast and into clean vessels, the whitish precipitation that happens thereafter is called “lees”. In some more traditionally bottled alcoholic beverages, chiefly old, red wines, you can find lees. You should never find dregs/dreck.

Dreck (german)drek (Yiddish)
1.excrement; dung.
2.worthless trash; junk.
Origin:
< Yiddish sh*t drek; cognate with German Dreck filth; compare Old English threax, Old Norse threkkr excrement

This is not new, for America. It’s a learned behavior, past down generation to generation. A look at OUR history, starting when the pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock, thru out America’s short 200 year history. I don’t understand why introduce this elitism as new, … the definition of crazy is repeating the SAME behavior, over and over, yet expecting a different outcome! The systematic institutional ISM’S, are alive and well.

Good article.
This “freedom applies to us and no one else” B.S. is probably one of the most annoying and frustrating things about the “hard right”… and really, we’re talking about social and religious conservatives here.
What’s laughable is how a relatively tiny minority of the western world’s population (primarily concentrated in the Southern United States), can have such a disproportionate influence in the political arena and dictate public policy to the degree that they do. They don’t ever seem to question the fact that they hold certain positions on a number of issues that the vast majority of the civilized world, including the rest of the U.S., Europe, Canada, Australia, and Japan, VEHEMENTLY disagree with.
This just shows what a sheltered, arrogant, and isolated world view these folks have; a bubble of ignorance where the only opinion that counts is their own and everyone should think and feel the way that they do….And this of course is constantly reinforced by the massive circle jerk of Fox News and right wing radio.

Great article – loved it. Needs to be repeated a LOT. This attitude goes hand in hand with the widespread and ridiculously simplistic notion of ‘American exceptionalism’ that makes me cringe every time I hear it. By its very definition, it smacks of wholly unwarranted and completely unearned arrogance and entitlement. The cringe factor? Think of just about any other person in any other country on earth reading or listening to it. Makes me ill to think that THIS is the portrait of America that is seen the most. Gahhh….

The irony is that while these knuckleheads brag and bray like jackasses about this country’s “exceptionalism,” they are working hard at undermining any reason for this country to BE exceptional. They are anti-intellectual, anti-science, racially and religiously bigoted, misogynistic, jingoistic, and incapable of appreciating how the United States is changing in terms of demographics. They are violent in their response to views that differ from their own among other Americans, and even worse with foreigners. I’m quite sure that people in other countries are either laughing their heads off at these yokels or shaking their heads in disbelief at the comments about “exceptionalism.” Of course, I’m sure that many if not most are doing both.

The majority of republicans are educated, respectful, decent, God fearing, and lovers of our Constitution. We don’t deem our Constitution as something disposable like a human fetus is to a democrat. We believe it should be held up, loved, protected, and obeyed. We value family, friends, hard work, and God above all else. We don’t expect a hand out at every turn but a hand up is appreciated. We respect those who believe differently from us but get angry when intolerance is directed at us such as atheist wanting to remove a cross from a headstone because it is on public land. I am part of the public and I think it should be left alone. I respect the dead and the lessons history tells us. I value human life, liberty, and EVERYONE’S right to happiness. I don’t believe my wealthy neighbor owes me anything just because he came up with a business idea that made him rich. I am happy for him. I am also appreciative of the fact he uses his money in our community to create more businesses which creates more jobs. He could easily take his money and build businesses overseas. I am thankful for the jobs his money provides to the people of my community. I believe the genuine poor and sick should be helped by their communities and country. I believe I have a right to own a gun since it takes half an hour for the police to show up where I live. I like that I live in a small community where people watch out for each other and we know each others names and that we care for one another. We are God loving, law abiding, hard working, giving, honest, decent, and tolerant. That you label all Republicans as racist and ignorant and intolerant is wrong and insulting. Yes, I love my country but not my government. Yes, I pray for our leaders and I respect your right if you choose not to. It is wrong of you to label every republican as elitist and arrogant and intolerant. We love and value human life and the rights of others. To bad you label us before you know us.

Sheila, I don’t “label Republicans before I know them”. I am assuming that you are the one that gave me the down vote. Some of my family and business associates are Republicans.
Speaking for myself, I am talking about a particular segment of conservatives (i.e. the religious right/dominionists) that have hi-jacked your party and have a disproportionately powerful influence over it.
Frankly, as I stated above, these folks are ridiculed by most of the western world because of their anti-science, religious extremist, and revisionist history views. They are a big part of the reason why the Republicans lost the election, and as time goes on will lead to the eventual decline of the GOP.
Unfortunately your comments about your rich neighbor not owing you anything, and not wanting to remove the cross on public property, smack of regurgitated talking points.

Everyone knows your trademark, knows what it stands for, and know who and what you are…therefore, everyone outside of your tribe can and will label you and, republican drek and, your one-dimensional world.
Why? Because…It’s not about what you believe, it’s about your behavior; let me repeat–it’s about your behavior, not your right of belief.
You belong to a political-religious tribal union (yes, a card-carrying UNION) that has merged politics and church to make war a full time event on those who won’t join your UNION…anytime in the history of any society, culture, country, etc. politics and religious myths are joined in at the hip, they create an unholy “union”, that turns in to “fire” and leaves a path of destruction for all to see…so, we know who you are and what you “believe”. Don’t tell the people who won’t convert, join your UNION they don’t know all the luv in’yer hart…
“…republicans are educated, respectful, decent, God fearing, and lovers of our Constitution. We don’t deem our Constitution as something disposable like a human fetus is to a democrat. We believe it should be held up, loved, protected, and obeyed.”
We can and will label your bad behavior…you cannot pull the rest of us down, dispose of OUR constitution because you want to love a dead fetus.

It was apparent that you were trying to take the high road and be “respectful” but as Anonymous says…”We will not argue with you…we will dismantle your one dimensional-world view agenda”…
There is no respecting or arguing “respectfully” with these folks. As one other commenter wrote so elegantly on that horrible denigrating fetus remark…
“So sweet, so very respectful. Sort of like throwing used toilet paper to someone who just sneezed.”
The ability to have a basic dialogue with people like Shelia takes more effort than necessary and has little or no value in reality; it’s like shouting at the moon, watching your words spiral away, spin off away from lack of gravity…Ya’ see, ya’ can’t make anything “stick” to a bubble without bursting it! Thing is I welcome civil and well reasoned (even robust) debate from people with dissenting viewpoints; Deborah just wrote an article concerning this. I believe it’s an essential component of our right to free speech.
However as you say there is no arguing “respectfully” with these folks ‘cuz one has to be rational and willing to listen to reason in the first place.
How the hell do you reason with someone who’s essential points are either completely intolerant ( our religion and our way ONLY, let’s criminalize sex between adults ), or so factually incorrect that they amount to pure fantasy ( evolution isn’t real, the founders were evangelical Christians, etc.), from the get go?

Sheila, I appreciate the time you took with your reply and I think you make some very important points about Republicans/conservatives. However, you sow the same divisiveness that you condemn with your insults about Democrats and life (“…disposable like a human fetus is to a democrat…”). Yes, and a divisive Democrat would reply that Republicans are only pro-birth; they think any life after that is disposable. Both responses are quite unhelpful.
Also, I think that your comment would have been more powerful had you said something like “I also get angry when atheists or others are not allowed to place their own symbols/statues in public places during the officially acknowledged holiday season.”
Nevertheless, I am proud to say that some of my closest and most thoughtful friends/family are Republican, though many would rather be able to vote for more libertarian or other candidates if they had the chance (i.e. if elections were not so corrupted by money and elite power). I am also proud that we can respect each other deeply even though we disagree vehemently about things like the role of government, the character of corporations, and how best to make sure all people are treated decently.

I’m not saying what you wrote is wrong or right Anyone person can put themselves up on a pedestal..but to create a general classification of any other person in any party is not understandable. Each voting individual has their own religion, degree of education and what they expect from their elected officials (if anything). Some Voters vote using all the issues. Some people use their vote for one specific issue. Some people use their vote for the good of the country and society as a whole. Some voters are self serving who vote for the candidate that will serve their way of life or alleviate their struggles. Some people vote just to preserve their personal rights and some people vote to overturn rights already given in previously legislation. Some people vote because they saw a sign on their neighborhood corner. I have many reasons why I vote..I am a god fearing person..therefore I can not pretend to be god through legislation by voting away somebody’s right to love, believe, choose and I cannot also cast a vote against the needy (poor, elderly, disabled, disadvantaged, uneducated, defenseless and helpless). I don’t use my vote out of judgement, I try to use it fairly, compassionately and for the good of mankind ..I judge only myself. The above article was written to expose the oppressing self serving voter or voting groups who proclaim their rights are being infringed upon but at the same hand rally against others rights still allowing themselves to feel entitled and righteous.

Sheila, I believe you just gave us a crystal-clear picture of why Republicans are so very despised by most of us on this site.
“We don’t deem our Constitution as something disposable like a human fetus is to a Democrat.” So sweet, so very respectful. Sort of like throwing used toilet paper to someone who just sneezed. So very Republican. The Constitution was written as a framework, to be followed, to be referred to, as a baseline, as a touchstone. It was never intended to be a millstone or prison wall. Just a few brief references to writings by members who actually helped to draft it would tell you this, but I sincerely doubt you would be remotely interested in doing so.
Apparently you believe that Democrats are all atheists and don’t value anything that you do. How very provincial of you. The easily demonstrable fact that you are abjectly wrong obviously means nothing to you, simply because you have never taken the very few moments it would take to actually find out the truth. How very Republican of you.
Apparently, you believe that all Democrats are somehow jealous of our rich neighbors and believe we are owed something by said rich neighbor. Wow. You really are delusional. Democrats simply do not believe that poor folks should be paying an astronomically higher tax rate than the rich. We do not believe that simply being rich puts a person on a higher level where the same rules simply do not apply. We do not believe that a rich person should be allowed to simply remove the entire apparatus of wealth generation to a foreign country if the worker bees get “uppity” or even if they do not, and then get a monster tax cut for doing it.
And a central point that you have completely missed. We label all Republicans as racist, elitist, ignorant and intolerant because a loud vocal bunch of you ARE. And YOU are doing absolutely nothing to shut down the ones who are, which makes you nothing less than an accomplice.

What Shiela forgot to tell you is that most gop women are against banning abortion as well as most of the public
And if the constitution is not disposable, why did the GOP throw it out the window when they tried to stuff women’s vaginas with probes and try to restrict voting to millions of Americans? And thats just two examples of how to dispose with the constitution

“Yes, I love my country but not my government. Yes, I pray for our leaders and I respect your right if you choose not to. It is wrong of you to label every republican as elitist and arrogant and intolerant. ”
^^^^^^Wrong? Perhaps. Completely understandable, however, when one considers that the Repubicans have made Rush Limbaugh the de facto leader of their party (the same R.L. who proudly declared after the Big O’s first win that he hoped our new President would fail). Or what about Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s proclamation: “The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.”? These two statements don’t exactly exude a love for country. What they do make very clear is that Repubes put party before Country, and they will not only whine and stomp like an ill-tempered kindergartner when they don’t get what they want, but they will go so far as to hope and plot for the demise of the Country when they don’t get their way.
I tend to agree with you when you say: “It is wrong of you to label every republican as elitist and arrogant and intolerant.” First of all, I don’t label EVERY person of ANY demographic anything. Second, I believe the words “childish, immature, and completely fuggin’ selfish” are even more accurate descriptors than the three you chose (not that yours are wrong, they aren’t, but the descriptors MUST be prioritized).
Hope this clears things up for yas!
