Wisconsin Democratic Leadership Responds to Scott Walker’s Power Grab
By: Sarah JonesMar. 9th, 2011more from Sarah Jones
Governor Walker and the Republican leadership found a way around the quorum needed to pass Walker’s death blow to collective bargaining rights. Republicans stripped the budget items from the bill and simply passed the portion that kills collective bargaining in a hastily called committee this evening. Once they eliminated the fiscal aspects of the bill, they were able to pass it without a quorum.
Greg Sargent at the Plum Line reports:
The Wisconsin Democratic Party sends over a copy of the forthcoming statement from Dem chair Mike Tate, and note the explicit threat to mount a recall drive targeting Governor Scott Walker:
“Using tactics that trample on the traditions of our Legislature, the Republican leadership has betrayed our state. Republicans have rubber-stamped the desire of the Koch Brothers and their godshead Scott Walker to cripple Wisconsin’s middle class and lower benefits and wages for every single wage-earner in our state. The vote does nothing to create jobs, does nothing to strengthen our state, and shows finally and utterly that this never was about anything but raw political power. We now put our total focus on recalling the eligible Republican senators who voted for this heinous bill. And we also begin counting the days remaining before Scott Walker is himself eligible for recall.”
Ignoring for now the potential illegality of this maneuver, and certainly the unpopularity of it, what strikes me first and foremost is that by passing the collective bargaining aspect separately from the “budget bill”, Walker has at long last admitted that his gunning for collective bargaining rights has nothing to do with anything fiscal. If, in fact, it had, it would have required a quorum. He can’t have it both ways.
There are 15,000 people at the Wisconsin state Capitol now protesting Walker’s violation of state open meetings laws and the use of the nuclear option. While Wisconsinites can’t impeach Walker due to the Republican majority, if they manage to recall 3 of the vulnerable 8 Republican state Senators, Walker can reined in until his recall. Make no mistake about it, Walker’s union busting bill will end up in court and Governor Walker’s “budget bill” has been exposed as a fraud.
Update: 10:22 PM Democrats will be taking the violation of the open meetings law to the Republican Attorney General tomorrow.

Thanks for the quick post on this story
I heard about it as a breaking news story at 5:45 and couldnt believe it. Well i guess there is no low too low or no “rule” that cant be changed for these people to get what they want.
I’m definitely going to be out on recall petition canvasses this weekend.

The recall fight is going to get about 100,000 new signatures tomorrow. The streets are going to erupt in Madison as well. This gross abuse of power by Walker and the authoritarian right for their corporate masters will spark a severe backlash.

Good stuff. I see they only need 25% of the original vote to get them. I hope they do it then Michigan and Ohio can as well

This needs to be replicated nationally. Recall efforts may be the only recourse to uphold real democracy in America at this point.

So much for fiscal matters. I’m done. Walker is little more than a little pussy with a Nazi fetish. A true pile of feces. Wisconsin residents should feel abject shame and embarrassment.

So how far are they willing to go?
I guess I should be glad they took three weeks to get to their next step. At least it gave the People two weeks to start getting organized.

Is Walker pushing for a general strike? What could they possibly be thinking to go up against the people’s will? OBVIOUSLY, the majority, the protesters, will defeat them so what is behind their pushing this way? It doesn’t make sense, there is something else up their sleeves, is he going to attempt to create a law before they remove him that says the bill cannot be changed? Still don’t make sense there either, as any future governor in Wisconsin can change any law by simply changing one word in a law, from can to cannot, or vice versa. This is really actually suicide for the GOP, and I don’t mean just in Wisconsin. The entire nation has been watching this and the other GOP around the country systematically taking away worker rights. We are not all tea bagger drones here, the majority have awoken and will not elect GOP. I guess that is good for the U.S. in the long run, so I am not to upset about this. Better their throats than ours.

Ive seen comments of others wondering if they want to provoke a general strike. The original bill had stipulations that striking would be grounds for automatic decertification of any associated union.
I wouldnt be surprised if they are trying to provoke a situation that will give them a pretext to decertify the unions and then fire any strikers.
Its SO DIRTY!!!
Its the psychic equivalent of fetid waste.

I believe they DO want a strike, because that will give them an excuse to fire people. I can’t think of one day since Walker took office that he has offered anything that remotely resembles what we call leadership. He is one of the most divisive governors in American history, recent or otherwise. It’s mind-boggling to see the Party of No cling to an ideology that is a proven failure, and the love affair that some Americans have with the Tea Partiers will be a very brief one when people are directly affected by their policies. With their overreaching and arrogance, the GOP and its TP auxilary will see to that themselves. I will be surprised if any Republican gets elected again in Wisconsin or these other states any time soon.
