Obama: They Must Think You’re Stupid

ImageIn his sharpest criticism yet of John McCain and Sarah Palin, Barack Obama went after the idea that the Republicans represent change while campaigning in Terre Haute, IN today.

For the first time Obama went directly after Sarah Palin, “I know the governor of Alaska has been saying she’s change, and that’s great. She’s a skillful politician. But, you know, when you’ve been taking all these earmarks when it’s convenient, and then suddenly you’re the champion anti-earmark person, that’s not change. Come on! I mean, words mean something, you can’t just make stuff up.”

He also mocked the idea of John McCain as a change agent, “And suddenly he’s the change agent? Ha. He says, ‘I’m going to tell those lobbyists that their days of running Washington are over.’ Who is he going to tell? Is he going to tell his campaign chairman, who’s one of the biggest corporate lobbyists in Washington? Is he going to tell his campaign manager, who was one of the biggest corporate lobbyists in Washington? I mean, come on, they must think you’re stupid.”

Obama is accurate on both accounts. Palin and McCain are agents of changing their own positions. In Palin’s case she was for earmarks and the Bridge to Nowhere before she against them and McCain likes to say that he went against his party on immigration, which he did, but then he flip-flopped to party’s position, and now does not even speak about immigration reform on the campaign trail.

I don’t know why the McCain campaign is attempting to use another strategy from the failed Hillary Clinton primary playbook. Clinton was able to beat Obama in the primaries when she started talking about the economy and policy, not by trying out change agent him. The GOP will not beat Obama in November by trying to run a personality campaign. Obama owns the change mantle, and I don’t see how a 72 year old Washington insider, who agrees with the current administration, and whose campaign is run by lobbyists can be seriously viewed by voters as someone who will bring change.

  1. u shouldsubmit this elsewhere. it’s exactly what i thought during his speech. But i feel like america bought it

  2. I watched the Democratic convention and it was better than the Olympics. Riveting.

    The Republican convention was SSDD.

What really makes me angry is how they keep harping on “big government” like it is responsible for all the things that are wrong. I for one LIKE government. The right has done their best to dismantle anything about it that doesn’t serve them, but people haven’t quite connected up the fact that before they derailed our agencies we could trust that the food we ate and the toys our kids played with wouldn’t poison or kill us. We could trust the fact that our work environments were safe. How many mining disasters have we had in the last 8 years? How many people got sick from the Katrina trailors?

Basically, they don’t give a shit about anything but the “bottom dollar” – profit is king. Once again we are at the place where “Laissez Faire” government inevitably takes us – back to the ROBBER BARON days.

  3. to remain in the dark and knee-jerk those election switches to the “right” position.
Republicans will always vote straight-ticket republican, just ask one of them! It doesn’t matter how out of touch/ill-informed their candidate is as long as he (or she)is anti-abortion, pro-war(which they confuse with pro-military), anti-feminist, anti-gay, anti-green, and church goin’. Screw everything else, they don’t give a damn and aren’t going to think about it, that’s why they elect more republicans, to do their “thinkin'” for them. They vote with their emotions and their prejudices, but they do vote, as MUST THE DEMOCRATS.

  4. Obama is Frickin’ awesome. He will bring change and I really like his personality and his speeches. Obama ’08! Screw those church going emotion voting republican-bitches-hillbillies, they’r so intolerant of anyone else, they hate gays, women, and Obama. Rednecks are so stupid and backward they shouldn’t even be allowed to vote. Screw those rednecks who go to church and only vote for republicans. Go Obama! We Democrats don’t ALWAYS vote Democrat like those D@mn Republicans, we sometimes vote for the green party, haha, bitches!

  5. If Obama was so opposed to the war , why did he bash Hillary for months for voting for it and then choose Biden to run with him?
Biden voted for the war TOO .Maybe somebody should inform Obama that Hillary’s vote was the same as Bidens. Maybe he isnt aware .

  6. To Obama is Awesome:

What are you on? You sound as hypnotized and mean-spirited as the Republicans,if that’s possible. Get a grip and stop stereotyping. It’s the issues that matter, and allsides have to communicate with open minds, including yours.

  7. Just from reading the hatred riddled comments above acussing replublicans of

    being intolerant is such hypocrecy.

I was born in Mexico and lived there till age 11. I am now 49 and have been a usa citizen since age 23.I rooted for Jimmy Carter and since Regan have felt the Republicans most resemble my moral values as well as my belief that people need less taxation and more beleive in themselves. Listening to the media you would think all so called minorities are victims and need government to make it.

I grew up in ELA to a widow mom. She never accepted welfare. Got by without healthcare even though i had epilepsy that affected me only at night. I worked after high school for 6 hours cleaning bathrooms and helped my mom with the rent. I put myself through school working summers and part time during school year. I put the mother of my kids through nursing school. Started a busniness 17 years ago manufacturing automatic pool covers. I have 2 sons and 2 daughters.Paid for their birth the old fashion way for all except or for on because i was insured. The youngest is a senior in high school and the oldest is and engineer student while the other is a nursing student and the 19 yr old boy is about to leave on a 2 year misson for his church. The oldest already served 2 years in Argentina.

I only share this to show that we are just like most people and struggle to raise a good family and hope to live in harmony and that the most anyone can get ahead if you are not held back by being laveled as a victims.

I am a consevative and i am proud of it. We hear all this talk about how intolerant conservatives are we also hear a lot of talk by the dems about
freedom of speech BUT as soon as you get into a conversation with one and they know i voted for Regan or Bush or that i listen to conservative radio host, the nice person starts to treat me as the ENEMY. Ihave learned to be careful no to discuss my opinions with people who are can openly express discust for my beleives and bash every person i voted for. I listen them and respect their right to disagree with me.

I just wish this was a free country for us too. There is deffinately a double standard in the way many dems demand idiological respect while they use verbal insults as soon as they disagree.

  8. Well thanks for your life story in a nut shell. Now let’s get back to the issues 8 years were more than enough. Republicans flip flop on issues too much and Obama did have a point. McCain wants to “now” push for change but sided with the Bush administration for 90% of time. You want to preach change now, please stick to your guns. Obama philosophy on Change has stood and obviously people want change, why else would McCain try to piggy back off that. McCain talks about “fight with me, stand up and fight with me” please American has been fighting. Look where it has led us to, Republicans had 8 years to fight, but were only let with bruises. The time is now I don’t see change when I hear McCain speak and I don’t believe he will put forth that. Obama may not have a long international track record like McCain, but he has done a lot for the community, middle class, and the little people that are being overlooked. McCain had to start from somewhere; he never had that track record all his life. Obama is trying to do that for himself, we all start from somewhere to get to the top. I’m all about experience, but to the right people…

    -Off my soap box!

  9. How are things, now that the Kool Aid has settled down & the socialism train is rolling along?
I hate to say “we told you so”.
    Actually, no, I don’t.

  10. i think that gun control should always be implemented at all times to reduce gun related violence`*.
