Obama Camp Sues over Republican Plan to Block Voters in Michigan

ImageA Republican plan to block voters who have had their homes foreclosed on in Macomb County, Michigan from voting in November has been legally challenged by the Obama campaign, who are seeking an injunction to block county Republicans from using foreclosure lists to prevent people from voting in the presidential election.

The story was originally broken by the Michigan Messenger that Republican volunteers planned to use the foreclosure lists to challenge the votes of anyone who had their home foreclosed on, because in order for a vote to count the voter must live in the same precinct that they are voting in. The Obama campaign has responded by seeking an injunction blocking the use of the foreclosure lists.

During a conference call this afternoon Obama legal counsel Bob Bauer explained the purpose of the lawsuit, “Let me be very clear. The purpose of the lawsuit is to reassure people that this is not going to unanswered. We have particular voters who would be threatened by this conduct and two organizations that are actively seeking to turn people out to vote who would be in this position, and who could conceivably believe that they shouldn’t respond, shouldn’t register and shouldn’t vote, because they would be subject to these illegal challenges…The purpose of this exercise is to protect people, and they can go forward in the knowledge that we are going to make absolutely sure that these foreclosure lists aren’t used to challenge otherwise eligible voters.”

The Michigan Republican Party denies the story, and that there ever was a plan to use foreclosure lists against voters. The Messenger story claims that the point of the plan is to suppress black turnout, but 91% of the county in question is white. 3,647 homes are in foreclosure in the county, and there is reason to believe that most of those homes belonged to white voters.

Perhaps, the plan wasn’t to suppress black voters, but Democratic voters in general. Most of the people who lost their homes did so because of sub-prime lending. Those loans targeted people in the economic lower classes. These are the same people that vote Democrat. It looks like it is going to be a close race between Obama and McCain in November, so the suppression of a few thousand Democratic votes could be enough to tip the state to McCain.

The Obama campaign seems to have learned from the previous two elections when voter suppression efforts went largely unchallenged by Democrats in Florida and Ohio. I think bringing these schemes out into the light of day is a very effective strategy for the Obama campaign. Of course, the Republicans are going to try to manipulate the process in a few critical states to win the election. This has become standard operating procedure. It is up to the Obama campaign to stop these efforts before they ever get started.

  1. Anyway you slice it, if these residents in question are able to find residence within the district they will be allowed to vote as it is their constitutional right. If they do not and move elsewhere out of the district, they have NO right to vote in the district of their former residence. Is it just me or does this not seem like the most ridiculas namby pamby attempt at made up conspiracy to stir the pot of stupidity that I have ever seen.

  2. they are trying to prevent democrats from voting! We’ve already seen this in Florida and Ohio! All I can say is, go get em’ Obama camp! and “Well, there they go again!”

  3. You have got to be kidding me! This article is so racist and politically leftist spun. You all do realize that this type of thing is exactly why all the big networks went through and replaced their anchors right??? First of all, the article assumes that Obama will automatically get every registered black voter to vote for him. Being “Black” (I am American of African decent) let me be toss this at you… No way ever in this lifetime or any other would I ever vote Obama!! He has no foreign policy and the federal government was not tasked with any responsibilities by the constitution for internal workings. Foreign leaders will never in a million years take him seriously or any Deomocrate for that matter. I would vote for Colin Powell, Condy Rice, Clarence Thomas…. But Never would I vote Obama!! Because some desperate democrates in Michgan say this garbage doesn’t make it real, just makes a sad pathetic statment to the liberal mentality and the fools that eat this stuff up…

  4. I take it that you are referring to article from the site the that broke the story as racist. My article points out that 91% of the population of the county is white, thus putting a dent in the racial element of this argument. I think that it is meant to supress Democratic voter turnout, not black or white turnout. The idea is to put it in people’s minds that they can’t vote, to discourage them from even trying.

You bet my piece is leftist. I thought everybody already knew that one. Take a look around at the site you are reading. No big shock there.

  5. Once again the republican operatives who cannot win without dirty tricks get caught with their pants down. And what do their defenders say? “Pants, what pants?”

You all may have gotten away with this denial in the face of all evidence in the past but your party’s policies have pretty much run our country into the ground and people are tired of your crap.

I am constantly amazed at how all you people follow these leaders who DO NOT care about you, only your money. WAKE UP! You are paying $4.00 a gallon for gas and Big Oil is making record profits and your leaders are shrugging their shoulders and saying “whatever you do, dont blame the the oil companies.” Geez, follow the money!!! But you go ahead and vote republican because they are the family values party. HAHAHAHAHA, they are if you value fraud, and greed and raping the American economy. WAKE UP!!!

  6. Give me a break. The Gop runs the country, fouls up everything they touch. Your home is forclosed on. Then they want to surpress your right to vote. Facists one and all. they are the worst thing that has ever happened to America. ENOUGH !!!!!!

  8. Let’s see no voting for people foreclosed on in Michigan if they don’t live in their original precinct, next, who will it be…. those displaced in the Midwest due to flooding or tornado’s, or will it be those burned out of there homes in the west, or how about the thousands now homeless down south due to the hurricane(s)…. It’s been a very bad year in the USA for people keeping their homes no matter what the circumstances maybe and now the Republicans want to start telling people they can’t vote because our economy’s failing (which they screwed up) and natural disasters keep hitting. That’s Just BULL!!!

  9. Well I believe it because in the state were I live, the news was saying something about that. Except they did not state any party, just that those people were not going to be able to vote. I live in Arizona. Just except that the republicans are just WRONG.

  10. Well at leased Joe Biden has that type of experience. You must not be the average American for you to be thinking that way. I would not want to vote for a party as sleazy and dishonest as the McCain campaign.I can’t believe how hard they are trying to cover her unethical actions. I am sure they will come up with something that will make her look innocent. The question is why would anyone trust her or in that case why would anyone trust the republican party? I don’t get it. They have been caught in lies, lies like saying that the democratic economic strategy is to raise taxes to the middle class. If you do your research you will know that it is not true. Unfortunately their will be STUPID blind people that’s won’t be able to see the truth, people that are so narrow minded that they will never admit that the democrats have a better plan. We keep borrowing millions from china and that will continue if McBush is elected. Knowing how sleazy the republicans are don’t be surprised if they end up stealing the electoral votes. Just like Bush, go too:

  11. obama will raise taxes for the middle class in one way or another you idiots. thats where the money is. you think taxing the shit out of everyone who makes 250k or more(less than 2%of america, and i sure as hell am not in that bracket…unfortunantly) will pay your emergency room bills, or the wall street buy outs(which are as much the debtors fault as the lenders. if you make 50k a year what the hell are you doing trying to buy a quarter million dollar house? has everyone forgotten individual responsibility?), or the vast number of failing mismanaged government programs? the money just doesnt exist there. yes we need government reform. yes we need to help prop up the middle class. but you are placing your trust in the wrong hands based on anger and frustration. slow down and think of the long term consequinces. this isnt a popularity contest. its the election on one of the most inportant jobs in america that touches the lives of everyone who lives in this country. i would love to see a black president. i do think it would unify the country in a way that we cant fully comprehend untill it happens. but im not voting for the color of someones skin or the characteristics of their reproductive organs. im voting for a handfull of policies that i think will improve our nation and trusting that our system of checks and balances will prevent the ones i dont agree with from adversly affecting the citizens rights.
everyone who is eligeble to vote should and in their respective counties per the law and moral responsibility. i feel it would be a bit out there to use forclosure lists and i am happy to hear there was no plan to, but i guess that fact got shoveled under.
sorry to call you idiots. exept for the person who pasted GOP plant over and over. douch bags like you make it hard to express views freely

  12. If this is the most ridiculous thing you’ve paid ANY attention to over the last seven and a half years, then you are definitely one who is part of the Republican collective…and a problem
as to why our country is falling apart at the seams.
These folks, regardless of having been foreclosed on, have a constitutional right…this was their last address on record, for where they are supposed to be voting at. I would point out the fact that the Republicans have no shame in bluntly going after democratic strongholds because they KNOW, they’re going to get their ass handed to them in the vote. So it is in their self interest to start targeting these types of areas.
I’ll tell you what….I know where the next war is going to be and its not going to be overseas. And you know what? Based on personality types as to who falls brainwashed to the Republican Party, I don’t think I mind. Sorry.

  13. Wow, you really never learned to critically analyze, have you?
The article from the newspaper suggested that the area might have been a predominantly black area, but the facts of the matter went on to say that mostly those houses that were foreclosed on were 91 percent white. How sad a commentary that you based your opinion on your perceptions (as neo con nut jobs are prone to do, but hey, thats just MY opinion–definitely not claiming that to be fact)instead of actualities.
Its time that reasonable people stood up to the invective of what used to be a credible party and say “enough”. If you have a stupid opinion….thats one thing. But when you try to actually change the facts, I won’t have it and I’m calling people on it. Thats fascist and its wrong, and I’d rather the reality be that we have to deal with bullies here in this country than be spending our money overseas.

  14. Why don’t they just register to vote in their new county of residence? Are they too lazy to get off their ass to do that? I moved from one county to another and had to re-register in order to vote and I have no problem with that. There’s another hole in your argument, where you say that people of the lower economic classes vote democrat, that’s false because there is no proof of that. Some may certainly vote democrat but some certainly do vote republican as well. Take North Carolina for example, it’s one of the poorest, rural states in the country, year in, year out they vote republican. At least 70% of people in that state are part of your “economic lower classes”. What you don’t realize is that your 80,000 a year low class up north is actually very well off down south. My main point here is that you can’t simply say that they are suppressing poor people because they are going to vote democrat, no evidence suggests this and it never will. I grew up in a household that brought home less than 25,000 a year, and my parents voted republican every year. Not because of party but because of what the democrats stood for. They want to take away my religion because it offends some muslim somewhere (I don’t give a damn if it does), they support gay marriage (my beliefs are completely against it and nothing is changing that), and they lie just as much as anyone else ( but they make themselves out to be perfect and everyone who challenges them is evil). Not all are like this but the far left wing of today is. I also find it ironic that you say the Republican party is the party of wealth. Every time I hear some multi-millionaire or multi-billionaire making an endorsement for a candidate, they are democrats and endorsing obama (As if what they say really matters to anyone). Let people decide for themselves. And get off your ass and register in the proper county, the law is the law, regardless of who you are.

  15. Is it not rather funny that Bill Clinton sighned away the rules that kept banks from doing what they did . Is it not also funny that the heads of mae an mac are from the clinton admin an that it was the democrates that kept pushing for these low interest loans to the unqualified. Is it also funny that the dems got tens of millions in campain cash from these instatutions an now want to blame Bush .

  16. Just because they were forclosed on I can offer nothing else except that the law has been on the books for a very long time. and it is the election board not any party, that is telling these people that they have to update their voter registration cards when and IF they move.. plain simple FACT. In Michigan when you MOVE you must UPDATE your voter registration card, or the Democrats want them to be able to vote not ONCE, but TWICE????????? Use you brains on top…………..

  17. If your neighbor were to move totally of his own free will to another city and then came back to your town to vote in your mayoral election; would that be ok?

In NJ, by law, a change of address with the Motor Vehicle Commission automatically counts as a change of address for voter registration unless the citizen explicitly declines to have the information forwarded to election officials. Message: if you move; even down the street, make sure your address is changed with the County in which you intend to vote and please vote in the district in which you live. Case Closed.

  18. and it must lead to Obama Camp.. lots of money to place lawsuits. Oh he is a lawyer. no matter the law is the law.
Whether you are foreclosed on or just move you must update your voter registration. No empty houses can vote…The Dem’s just want these people to be able to vote twice. LOL and a lot of Mich people are voting for McCain. so this is to rile them up and try to change that vote. to Obama the great philantropist with your money.. Will he personelly pick up their morgages and help them out for their vote in return. lies lies and more lies. coming from every direction in America. Damn didn’t your mothers tell you not to lie.??What about your Daddy’s.???

  19. C’mon, quit making up stories. Just because you write it doesn’t make it true. Why not stick to the facts rather than resorting to childish lies. Don’t you realize your article contains no facts. I guess that’s why you are not a real reporter.

  20. It is not rather funny that Bill had to do that. But you left the part out where it was the Republican Majority that forced that bill through following their “contract with America” in 1994. Clinton did not have enough votes in the senate or the house to sustain a veto. His hand was forced. He is on record for not wanting the deregulation of the rules that led to the climate we are currently in. Read about how our government works and you’ll find a lot of things you don’t like. How about the blame Repubs are currently heaping on the ‘Democratic” controlled Congress. They have a majority, but not a veto proof majority. So the bills that should get signed into law, get vetoed by George Jr. and stay vetoed. Or the Repubs filibuster all night and the 2/3rds majority is lacking to stop them. And, the heads of Fannie Mae and Mac did not create the low interest loans. Those were commercial products created by the large banks in this country who are now failing. Mae and Mac had to go along with the commercial climate because their mandated mission, maintained since 1994 by a Republican Congress (and the last 7 years President) states that they must provide mortgages. Their hands were tied. What is not funny, is that people continually mouth the words ‘vote the bums out’, but continually vote the bums back in again. ON THE RECORD: the Bush tax cuts benefitted the top 1% of the population most. OBAMA’s tax cuts will repeal the disastrous Bush tax cuts to the top 5% of the population and remove tax credits to major large corporations who for years have gotten away with not paying their share. Furthermore: the current energy bill does EXACTLY what we the people have been asking for years: it gives strong tax credits to companies that develop alternative sources of energy AND wipes away billions of tax credits paid back to the large Oil companies. It gets back billions of our (taxpayer) money that has been lining the pockets of share-holders and CEO’s of Exxon-Mobil, BP, etc. and guess what: The republicans are seeking to stop that from happening. Now, that’s really not funny at all.

  21. All they want is for drilling to be added to that bill. Once that’s done I’m pretty sure it will pass. Don’t give me the whole story about that’s not the solution…it’s not the whole solution but it’s part of it. Yes, we need alternative energy, but the fact is we don’t have it, so what are we going to do until we get it? I live in a rural area (everywhere around here is rural, nothing closer to each other than 20 or 30 miles)and I shouldn’t have to struggle to go to work, which is a 30 mile drive) just because some people are too stupid to realize that there is a bridge needed. I need something NOW until we get to the point where that new technology is making its way the nationwide market. Approve the drilling offshore (you won’t be able to see it anyway and the fishermen will love it, they are fish magnets!) and the bill will pass. It’s a simple matter of compromise, which one person in congress (SHE will remain nameless) refuses to cooperate with.

  22. Are all the people now homeless? If they now live somewhere else what’s stopping them from voting in their current district? If they’re to thick to figure this out they have no business voting anyway.

  23. Please point out the lies. He is merely reporting on an article that was published in Michigan and the FACT that Democrats have issued this lawsuit against Republicans. How did he make up childish lies? Or did you just want to flame him for writing on the ‘internets’?

  25. I think all corporate executives including, the ones the government has bailed out
currently with real hard working average American taxpayer dollars residing on foreign soil
soil should not be allowed to vote if they have company operations out of the
U.S. and not in the U.S. on American soil! All company operations must be in a district of the U.S.
before executives and CEO’s can vote.
I am absolutely amazed at the Corporate Fascist Socialism taking hold of
America and what the rich Right get away with under the guise of
being a Christian and a Republican. Their fakes!
The Bush NAZI Clan are succeeding in turning
the US into a Fascist Corporate Socialist state. The Bush family supported the
Nazi’s that the media never seems to want to report or talk about. Here comes the rigged elections
again with the voting machine that carries a voting virus flipper.

  26. Republicans do have a foreign policy. It is kill, kill, kill and then take their resources. I don’t like that foreign policy. I would rather have a president with out a foreign policy then the one the republocans have.

  27. I cannot believe that a person’s right to vote could be taken away just because they cannot afford their home. I live in Texas and even people in homeless shelters vote.

  28. Read the article. They want to use the forcloser list to keep them from voting. They are going to challenge anyone on the list regardless if they are legally re-registered or not. By challenging they effectively stop them from voting because they have to prove they are re-registered. By the time they clear it up it is to late to vote. So the laws may be in place but they still can stop their vote.

  29. Well well well,

McSame the man of the people has Republicans working for him trying to prevent people who lost their houses from voting!! How dare you people!! Have you no shame..The Republicans in here who find it alright and say they are too lazy too reregister,,,you are just sick..you don;t know why these people lost their homes…lots of times its loss of jobs which under this failed administration is happening more and more .Alot of the lenders had no shame and were very predatory which led to the loss of homes with spiraling interest rates.shame on you.As my mother always taught me there but for the grace of God go I….they may still live in the district in an apartment…how dare these people!!

  30. Allow me to post my example. In 1997 I lost my home in foreclosure. I continued to live in the house until 12 months later, becausee I rented it from the bank. Should my name have been eliminated by the pollster?

  31. In 1996 my home went into foreclosure. I continued to live in my home for 12 additional months. Should my name have been taken off the polling list?

  32. In 1996 my home was foreclosed, but I continued to rent the home from the bank. From your logic should my name have been eliminated from the the polling list?

  33. Let’s evaluate your written statement:
    1. All foreclosures mean that the occupants no longer live in the same precinct.
    2. One may presume that when a foreclosure occurs one day the next day the occupants are gone from the precinct.
    3. One may also presume that the occupants are not temporarily absent from the precinct.
    4. One cannot presume that the ocupants are returning to live within the pricinct.
    5. Finally the right to vote be guaranteed to a victim of foreclosure, but the right of challenge should not be used as the vehicle to teach the foreclosee a lesson the hard way.

Now, using the above logic weigh it against my own case:
In 1996 my home was foreclosed. The bank allowed me to rent the house from them.

Therefore, I was not eliglble to vote. Right? OR WRONG!

  34. You Republicans do know [I hope!] that more than 80 % of the wealth [service or production]created in America is taken by the rich. However, money is not to be considered as creating wealth. Only labor causes real wealth to be created. The money system is only a scheme to redistribute wealth. It was created by lazy people who were smarter than hard working people. If work were truly rewarded the average working man or woman today would be making $80,000 a year. The lazy bond clippers would be poor. NEVER, NEVER assume the working people are too stupid to create wealth because they are the “geese that lay the golden eggs”. I love the hard working American people. May God bless them by allowing them this election to take over the country once and for all. Let’s change America because the God-dammned Republicans have ruined our country by allowing the debt to multiply while allowing corporate officials to receive undeserved golden parachutes. They have driven our country into an unnessary war; taxed the middle class into poverty; bailed out banks that don’t deserve shit from the taxpayers; lowered real wages for workers; made education very, very expensive; and finally driven more than 45 million into a condition of having no medical insurance.

The new Obama future is not socialism… it goes beyond socialism. It is the working people [the people who deserve] taking over the country.
We, the workers, know waht is good for us, because we created America. The money changers claim they did, but their words are lying words!

  35. In 1996 my home was foreclosed. However, I continued to live in my home for an additional 12 months. Would you have removed my name from the polls without an investigation?

  36. Hey if they dont live in the district…they dont vote in the district….could be a source of double voting again.

  37. It amazes me how Republicans choose a word of the day and they all repeat it every chance they get. Does noone else think this is weird? Hey John McCain…we all know you are a war veteran. You do not have to start every sentence and answer with that fact. When asked how many houses he has John McCain answered that when he was a P.O.W. he didnt have a chair or a table or anything so how many houses he has is unimportant. Answer the questions John McCain. The fact that you were a P.O.W. pulls at my heart strings and makes me appreciative of people as brave as you but it does not make you someone that I would vote as my President.
And…Sarah Palin…not someone I would pick for a friend..a neighbor and certainly not a VP. Her views worry me and should every American. Anyone who leans too far to one side or the other will go off the road. You must have some sort of balance. Sarah leans so far to the right she’s in some corn field driving with her eyes shut. Women are not stupid. We are not going to vote for her just because she has boobs. She is interesting for sure the same as a UFO or some weird creature that has never been seen before is but we wouldn’t vote them President.

  38. They just need to register in the district they moved. I would because this election 2008 is a very important election for president.

  39. To be honest I think Palin is inexperienced and it scared me to death to think she could be president.Mccain think we Americans and the Republicans too are all stupid at his tricks to become president by choosing Palin for VP. Mccain don’t realize but all democrats see through him. We are not stupid. Even my 15 year old daughter have been watching the the campaign process by each candiate and she see through mccain corruption.
