Michael Steele: Confessions of a College Party Boy

Last updated on August 10th, 2014 at 05:30 pm

RNC Chairman Michael Steele spoke to some Washington D.C. high school students for a C-SPAN Students and Leaders segment. Steele inspired the teens by telling them that he partied so much during his first year of college at John Hopkins that it got him kicked out of school. Steele said, “I partied my behind off.”

Steele said, “My first year at Johns Hopkins, I had a good time. I really did. I partied my behind off. I heard there were classes, and some people told me I really should go. But I was having a good time. … I just networked the heck out of that bad boy. I was getting there. I was talking, I was grooving, I was having a ball!” Ah, but there is a moral to the story, Steele got kicked out school, and had to go to summer school while working full time to get back in.

You have to hand it to Michael Steele. He certainly is honest, and he seems like a
nice enough guy, but I don’t think talking to high school students about how you got kicked out of college for partying reflects the values of the base of the GOP.

Has Michael Steele ever met a camera that he didn’t like? I have to admit that I find it hard to dislike Steele because he is such a goofball that it is impossible to take him seriously.

Even when he gave his big speech to the RNC proclaiming the comeback of the Republican Party and bashing Obama, I couldn’t take him seriously. Can you ever imagine this guy being a threat to go toe to toe with President Obama? On the same day that Dick Cheney is giving a major national security speech, the chair of the RNC is talking to teens about how he got kicked out of college. This sums up the state of the leadership of the GOP.
