George Will Calls the Right Wing Foolish for Criticizing Obama on Iran

On ABC’s This Week program, prominent conservative George Will called the right wing criticism of President Obama’s response to the protests in Iran foolish. He said, “The people on the streets know full well what the American attitude toward the regime is. And they don’t need that reinforced.”

Here is the video courtesy of Think Progress:

Will said, “The legitimacy of the regime such as it was, is much diminished, whether or not that is a good thing is another matter. The president is being roundly criticized for insufficient, rhetorical support for what’s going on over there. It seems to me foolish criticism. The people on the streets know full well what the American attitude toward the regime is. And they don’t need that reinforced. Furthermore, there is an American memory of encouraging things like the Hungarian Revolution in 1956, with the rhetoric about rolling back Communism. We had balloons float in and drop medals with the Statue of Liberty on it and leaflets came the crunch and there was nothing we could do about it.”

George Will joined fellow Republicans like Pat Buchanan and Henry Kissinger in condemning the right wing criticism of Obama. Will is correct that even if the U.S. vocally supported the protests there is nothing that they can do when the violent crackdown comes, to help the protesters. Another example that comes to mind happened in Iraq where the US encouraged the Kurds to overthrow Saddam Hussein, but did nothing while they were gassed by Saddam.

The right wing has based its foreign policy on tough talk for decades, but America would not be helping the protesters by talking tough. People like John McCain and Lindsey Graham are trying to earn domestic political points by exploiting the situation. They don’t seem to care about the consequences that a policy of tough talk and action would hold for the protesters.

  1. The Conservative war mongers want Obama to take side in Iran’s domestic matter which he is intelligently avoiding. Why all these ‘Peace Haters remain silent in the same situations in Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Egypt, the Gulf States and the
    nearest of all – Cuba?
There is ample food for this type of meddling in these countries which these Peace Haters, who are the Agents of Military Industrial Complex, like to savor.
These War Mongers want Obama to commit the same mistake which Clinton committed in Iraq. Western block, Russia and China will be able to increase their share in Trade with Iran as it happened in Iraq before 2003.

  2. George Will lives in his expensive home (apartment) and shelters himself from the rest of America. I supported BO in the beginning but it is becoming clear he has no clue what he’s doing and if he DOES, then he’s swindling this nation. I see the endless love-fest that the news media has for this man. Now I’m scared. No accountability and it seems BO’s power grows continuously unchecked. He has the Senate, most of the House, the Supreme court isn’t far behind.
When has a President EVER had the power to control our financial systems and major business? Never before. Why? Because it’s not his job to do that. Only tyrants and dictators do such things. The corruption in Washington has always been bad, but this is the scariest thing I’ve seen.

  3. I generally don’t try to reason with others who preface their opinion with an attack on the credibility of those who disagreed with them. They are usually incapable of entertaining any form of rational debate of the merits of opposing auguments. But in case you are an outlier and for the benefit of those who are reading this exchange..here goes.

If you just read the newspapers and watch the news television coverage on a regular basis, I would think you would see ample evidence of the current political system checking President Obama’s powers and holding him accountable for the slightest perceived misstep. His will is being checked even by members of his own party on occasion. Because of the extraordinary situtation the US is in, President Obama has inherited a crisis which has enabled him, (some experts say neccessitated him) to have some unusual influence on the financial system and major businesses. That’s how I would characterized it. Wall street, the banking system and various special interest groups related to health care and other key issues are continually forcing him to accept less than his desired agenda or forcing him to modify what he wants to accomplish. Your admission of being scared suggest a strategy of fear mongering to change others perception of Barck Obama. All I can say is where was your fear when millions of people were saying the former presidential policies was steering this country toward certain disaster?
So lets see: to date you called the president a “swindler” or “incompetent”; a “Tyrant” or “Dictator and accuse the media of bias toward him. (I assume you have never watched Fox news station political commentary on President Obama).

Get a grip! The man has just barely finished his first 100 days in office! If you don’t calm down you are going to be institutionalized from a nervous breakdown before President Obama completes his first term! The rest of you people….Stay calm and watch what happens, give him time to govern this country, and by all means pray for his success. By his third year in office, you will have a legitmate reason to vent such strong opinions that will perhaps have some basis in fact. For the record, I agree with George Will and think President Obama is doing a good job to date. But I’ll reserve my final opinion until he has been in his office for a few years.

  4. Dear Anonymous:

You should read the book by H.W. Brands titled “Traitor to His Class, The Privileged Life and Radical Presidency of Franklin Delano Roosevelt” .

Quoting the books inside cover, it says “his remarkable willingness to champion the concerns of the poor and disenfranchised. His combination of political genius, firm leadership and matchless diplomacy saved democracy in America during the Great Depression and championed the American cause of freedom in World War 1.”

Continuing: …”revolutionary efforts with his New Deal legislation to tranform the America political economy in order to save it…”

  5. Mr. Anonymous Will is a Pawn…

You really expect any of us to believe “you supported BO in the beginning?” Nobody who supports Obama calls him BO. That’s a right wing FAUX News tactic. I’m surprised you’re no just straight calling him Hussein…

Talk about the president growing his own power unchecked? Even Dick Cheney is on record in interviews saying that Bush & Co amassed a lot more power for the executive branch than almost any presidency before them. Darth Vader admits to hording power for the president, and you’re sooooo concerned about Obama?

Insofar as no other presidents ever having the power to control our financial system, perhaps you’d like to give some concrete examples of how Obama is actually controlling our financial system. If Obama is indeed pulling the string on capitalism, than maybe we should be concerned. But I wonder how one person, who makes a “meager” $400,000 a year, controls all of capitalism when even Warren Buffet and Bill Gates can’t!

If this is he scariest thing you’ve seen from government, you must not know about Indian genocide, anti-miscegenation laws, the Tuskegee syphilis experiments, McCarthyism, Iran-Contra, Reagan calling Osama bin Ladin a courageous freedom fighter, a little something called the PATRIOT ACT, and those McCain/Palin campaign rallies filled with jutjobs chanting “kill him” about Obama.

Please…we’re not all as stupid as you. Next time you try to pretend to be an Obama supporter, take off the Hannity-Rush-Coulter-Beck suit first.

  6. I’m not trying to gang up on you but what you said is just so, well, stupid. ‘Obama’s power grows continuously unchecked’ you say? Well that means we’re going to have health care reform this year. Right? Let’s meet back here at the end of the year and see if we finally get it after 30 years of talking about it from Kennedy to Clinton and now 2/3 of the people want it. But the AMA doesn’t and the drug companies damn sure don’t and those powerful lobbyist working the GOP and southern Dems like it’s the thing to do! Hell the President can’t even take the first lady on a date to NYC without the neo-cons having a fit or go out for a burger with Biden and put mustard on it without being attacked by the GOP and Faux News. Get some perspective. Watch MSNBC and ABC and read the NYT and WSJ. Not only will you get a clearer picture of where the country is going but you won’t be so angry and depressed either. A steady diet of Rush/Hannity and Beck combined with faux News will send you to an early grave.
