Glenn Beck and Michele Bachmann Freak Out Over the 2010 Census

Michele Bachmann was on Glenn Beck’s Fox News show today, and the result was an absolute panic over the 2010 Census. Beck worried that by not filling out the Census the government could take away his gun. Bachmann also continued to claim that the Census information could used to put Americans into internment camps.

Here is the video from Media Matters:

Beck tried to worry people with the threat of a fine for not filling out the Census. Beck asked if there are any other ramifications for not filling out the Census. Bachmann answered, “Let me give you two ramifications Glenn, the US Census Department told my office that if you fail to fill out this form, you will receive approximately six contacts from them either through phone calls or they will knock on your door. If you still do not give them the information they said they will contact your neighbor to the left of you, to the right of you to get information.”

She continued, “Here is the other thing that will happen. From history the United States government between 1942 and 1947 passed the second War Powers Act. They used the US Census information to round up the Japanese and put them in the internment camps. Americans were told that they would have their information used against them. They did.”

Beck and Bachmann conceded that no one has ever been fined for not filling out the Census, so the worst punishment one can face is that the Census people will annoy you. Oh God no, not six calls or visits from Census takers.

Doesn’t it undercut Bachmann’s entire privacy argument, if the government is able to get the information they need by asking your neighbors? How much confidential information can your neighbors know about you? I hate to tell Michele Bachmann this, but if she has filled out an income tax form, Uncle Sam has her phone number. Heck, if the government wants to, they can listen to her phone calls.

Beck and Bachmann are the Ken and Barbie of conspiracy theorists. Bachmann continues to confuse the Census with the American Community Survey, which is not sent to every American. Bachmann and Beck don’t care about facts. They are out weave a giant Obama, ACORN, Census, concentration camps conspiracy theory that is as silly as it is crazy.

  1. I think the bigger concern is allowing an organization who is under investigation for fraud and conspiracy charges in over a dozen states to be the collector of private infromation. Something about this just smells bad.

Well, that and the one question that is NOT asked, “Are you an American citizen?”

    Gads.

  2. It really is too bad that the census doesn’t have the question “Are you an American citizen?” because we could have caught so many illegal aliens that way! All we would have to do is see who checked no! It’s so simple! God, some people are so dumb.

  3. ACORN has nothing to do with the census. CENSUS workers will be collecting information from people who do not return the forms… Please stop seeing conspiracies where there are none.

  4. the census phucks came out to my home today laying on their horn in my driveway. they did this for fifteen minutes. i didn’t go out. they left another census in a baggie. i’m not filling it out. the fed-gov can shove-it.

  5. Michele Bachmann’s statements are not surprising given her political / family background. She’s the first Republican woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Minnesota and I believe her husband was, at one point, a Milwaukee personal injury attorney.

  6. @mike,
So is she being punished for being successful, or because she is married to someone who “you believe” was a personal injury attorney? Or is it only considered success if a Democrat is the first woman elected to the House from her state?

  7. For all of their sqwaking about fiscal responsability, these two twits and others like them are donig nothing more the costing the taxpayers millions.
The commerce secratary was on The Daily Show last night and stated that for every percentage point of mailed census forms not returned, it cost the US around 850 million dollars. Sending someone to the doors of the paranoid nutters to get information that is neither propriatary or is allready of public record somewhere.

Thanks a lot Rep Bachmann, (you stupid cow!)

  8. @lessgov, I imagine you quivering on the floor curled up in the fetal position while the scary old census worker was in your driveway!

    It must have been terrifying!

  9. @, The only reason Acorn IS NOT involved is because people found out about it and put a stop to it. They were orginally suppose to.

  10. They sent out a letter saying we would receive a census. They sent out the census. Than they sent out a letter telling you to be sure to send it back. Plus all the advertising and paying of workers…..What a huge waste of money.

  11. Do you really think that illegal aliens would fill the census out and if so then would they really mark not a U.S. Citizen? If I was illegally in another country I know I wouldn’t admit to it on a form Going back to the Government.

  12. Not everyone is a rocket-scientist. Many would probably fill in “not an U.S. citizen”. This is just another example of the erosion of our rights and privacy by the government!

  13. @Ol’ Whip, I never stop being amazed by people like you. I would guess that you don’t even pay taxes. I would guess you don’t even have a job. I would guess you don’t pay any attention to what is going on around you. LIKE THE NATIONAL DEBT OR HOW MUCH OF OUR TAX DOLLARS THIS ADMINISTRATIONS WANTS TO GET THEIR HANDS ON AND COST THE TAXPAYERS!!!!!! You have got to be kidding me. Who is the STUPID COW!!!!!????????

  14. First, they provide us with schools and libraries, then they give us free healthcare, and now, they want to know how many of us there are? Enough is enough! We need to take our country back from the socialist conspirators! The founding fathers would NEVER allow something like this to happen in their country!

  15. @Iamjustsaying,

You would guess wrong. (Apparantly all of your thoughts are based 100% on guessing unincumbered by facts.)
So here’s a few facts for you to chew on….

I have filed and payed taxes since the tender age of 11. Yup kiddo, I have been punching a clock and making my contribution to the treasury for 37 years.

I just reached the 25 year mark at my most recent place of employement. The longest I went without a job (after graduation from high school) was 2 months.

I read my local newspaper daily, check in on news services like Reuters and BBC during the day and will watch as much evening news as I can stand. (Admittedly, that isn’t much.)

I am well aware of the sizeable national debt that was the unwanted gift from the Bush admin., that’s why weak little twits like yourself who listen to other twits like Bachmann/Beck and hide from the mean old census taker and waste even more money TIC ME OFF.

    Ol’ Whip

  16. @Anonymous,

The American Community Survey does ask the citizenship status of individuals but the Census does not. And I have seen a completed ACS on which a person admitted to illegal status in the U.S. The thought is that illegals will not answer the door to be counted if the citizenship question is on the actual Census. The law only requires the Census, not the completion of the ACS. And… constitutionally, the Census only requires the number of people housed there. The rest is for demographic info for funding programs.

As a census taker, I’ve been to many a home that I’m sure is inhabited by illegals, which are counted, and then considered into the count when representation is considered every ten years. It’s Bullshit but all of the people who voted for Obama had better get used to far more invasive questions from the government once healthcare kicks in.

Then we’ll be telling the government how often we tried to conceive last year before we can receive payment for infertility treatments. Just think of that and stop worrying about the census which I could probably find online for just about everyone in this country.

    Census taker

  17. @lessgov,

You do realize they are doing their job right? And any personal information they recieve isn’t shared for 72 years. The “fed-gov” that can “shove it” also uses the money for the roads you drive on, parks you look at, hospitals you use. You don’t even know what the questions are let alone what they are used for.

You can learn more about a person on the internet than what the Census needs to know.

  18. @vickie,

The biggest waste is when people don’t send in back and thousands of people are paid to go knock on doors until the information is recieved. Why not just send it back?

  19. I’m an interviewer in the Coverage Follow-up Operation of the Census. I wondered why a lot of the people who were saying we had no right to conduct the interview were starting to use all the same wording and phrases. I suspected someone with nationwide reach was telling them they don’t have to respond, that the CFU (Coverage Follow-up) isn’t part of the Census, doesn’t need to be completed, and they should refuse, refuse, refuse.

As others have pointed out, not responding is a bigger waste than responding. For God’s sake, everything about the Census is laid out in black and white on the web at ! And if it’s privacy these two are worried about, they shouldn’t be. The information is already collected, all I’m doing is asking if it’s right. I’m also a little disturbed by how much of it has been wrong, but that’s the point of my job, to make sure it isn’t!

I make $11 an hour to be polite when people tell me I’m a bad person for taking 10 minutes of their time. They tell me how unpatriotic I am for doing a civic duty that is rooted in the foundations of this country. They tell me it’s wasting MY time, but I needed a job and now I have it. They equate me with customer service representatives overseas, but I live and work in Utah. They try to trip me up on information about the CFU’s authority as a Census project. Hell, they try to trip me up about the Census’s own authority and the right of the government to use methods it believes fit and necessary to achieve the most accurate Census.

I’m not a telemarketer. I’m not someone sitting comfortably in a call center in India, unaffected by the choices made by the people I speak to all day. I’m not someone who takes for granted my rights and the responsibilities that go along with them.

I am someone who believes this country is at its best when all voices are heard.

  20. @teabagger,

Who are “they”? Have “they” successfully divided us (the people) to the point of “Us and Them”? What does it mean to be an “American”? When do we get off this destructive rabbit trail of emotionalism and study the roots of the Country we are so lucky to reside? What has made it so successful? It’s the foundation our founding fathers provided which has made the benefits you have mentioned possible. Do you believe we might be wise to realize what motivated them and why so many have put their lives on the line and even died to make all this possible? Would you not agree that our current government over the last 20 years is completely corrupt compared to the government of our founding fathers? Would it be safe to say it has gotten exponentially more corrupt over the last 20 years? Are there actually people in our country who believe that the government provides benefits because they actually care about It’s people or do they realize it’s only about gaining votes and power?? When do we have the revelation that it’s time to wipe the slate clean and start over? Have you ever had a car that was so old and broken down that it just needed to be replaced? Continuing to maintain it becomes costly and dangerous. Inevitably it is replaced and the same has been true with every government in history over time. Even if there are some “good parts” it still won’t work. What does all this have to do with the Census…Well, history has shown us that a corrupt entity/government will use everything in It’s power to gain more power. As it grows It typically gets exponentially worse. Information is power. We would be wise to ask ourselves why the government needs ALL this information. The constitution only allows the government to count the people and there was a very good reason it was written that way. The Census has grown far beyond just counting the people and is relentlessly and obtrusively forcing itself into the lives of every individual citizen of the United States of america. This is offensive to anyone who understands why they are doing it. The odd thing about a conspiracy is it is usually only realized after it is too late because most people don’t want to believe in or think about malevolence. Like sheep to a slaughter.

  21. @Isaac,

    Dear Poor Isaac,

I appreciate your position in life. You have to do what you have to do. Presuming you have a family to feed and no other place to turn I can appreciate that you got a job and will take care of business. You probably feel that you’re just doing your job and not causing anyone any harm. Unfortunately that is not the case. You are participating in a conspiracy to extract information (Power) from every individual American citizen in the country which inevitably will result in the unadulterated abuse of power which all governments in history have exercised against their own citizens (eventually) in an effort to increase their power and CONTROL their people. All you have to do is study the history of the census and you will understand. Our founding Fathers studied these issues and very deliberately included specific boundaries in our constitution as to what the census should include in an attempt to prevent such a corruption as is taking place. It was intended to only be a counting of the people for the purpose of elections for our government, nothing more and no other information.

  23. @The True American Patriot, nothing scares me more than a person who calls himself a true American patriot. Patriots don’t call themselves patriots.

There is nothing in the census that can harm you. It asked for who are you and where do you live. It asked for how many other people are of the household and who are they. It asked for your nationality.

Is there something that scares you about that? Or is it that you are against a representative government being as that is how representation for your area is determined.

There is absolutely nothing in the census that can be used against you in the year 2010 in the United States of America.

  24. So true, and the worst part is that they Promote Beck who is a known liar and promoter of fear among the ignorant and fearful!
For the stats check out politifact.com

  25. She also is as bad as Beck, neither of them learned anything about truthfullness and honesty when they were kids. They ought to bothe be banned from the airwaves. What a waste of space.

  26. @Ol’ Whip, right on dear, Pretty much gonnas say the same thing. “Iamjustsaying” is just another talk radio “believer”.
    They are soooo sad.

  27. There’s no reason to speak like that to a persn expressing her opinion. I don’t agree with her, but she has every right, and perhaps even obligation to express how she feels.

  28. Who, when asked by the census and is here illegally, is going to say “No, I am not an American citizen…please arrest me.” to the census taker.
Just leave the poor undocumented folks alone for 30 seconds. Geez.

  29. Is that the way it is in other countries with single payer and other types of socialized medicine? Are they running scared of the government because they have invaded their private lives? Is that why all the other industrialized nations don’t have socialized medicine? Oops! Actually, they do.
I can only speak for Canada because I lived there awhile. They are very happy with their healthcare and are in no way afraid of the government.

  30. So let me get this straight, the census according to ol’ whip:

The census is a good idea because for every percentage point of forms not returned, the gov’t. is spending 850 million dollars to get “information that is neither propriatary or is allready of public record somewhere”?

Sounds like we’d be better served if the gov’t. spent that money retrieveing the “information that is neither propriatary or is allready of public record somewhere” from the public records where it already exists.

By the way, you need to work on your grammer. It’s grammatically incorrect to use “neither” and “or” towards the same reference. The correct usage is “either” and “or”.

  31. The Founding Fathers wouldn’t allow something like hte census to happen in their country? I suggest you go back to your high school government and civics classes, it’s obvious you failed them:

    Census History and legal basis:
US Constitution (Article 1, Section 2: “The actual Enumeration shall be made within three Years after the first Meeting of the Congress of the United States, and within every subsequent Term of ten Years, in such Manner as they shall by Law direct”).

The Constitution mandates the census, and gives Congress the power to direct what information the census collects.

  32. Please list the specific boundaries contained in the Constitution concerning what information can or cannot be gathered by the census.

  33. She’s the same knucklehead that wanted some members of Congress investigated for being “unAmerican.” It’s another example of someone who rails against “big government” when it doesn’t suit her purposes but is for it when it does. This was back in 2008 when she spewed this nonsense.
