Glenn Beck Thinks that the US Bought Alaska in the 1950s

Bad things always seem to happen when Glenn Beck and history collide. The latest example occurred today on FNC’s Fox and Friends, where Glenn Beck claimed that the United States bought Alaska in 1950s so that we could drill for oil. Beck apparently got Alaska’s date of purchase and the year that it became a state confused.

Here is the video courtesy of Think Progress:

Beck was talking about the energy bill when he said, “You know Donald Trump, I want to talk to this guy. When he was on the show just a few minutes ago I was thinking how can you not be laughing at us? How can the world not be laughing at us? We have all these resources. Why did we buy Alaska in the 1950s? We bought Alaska for the resources. And now we say no!”

The term Seward’s Folly refers to the purchase of the Alaska Territory by former Sec. of State, William Seward in 1867. Alaska became a state in 1959. How can anyone take Beck seriously when he thought that the United States bought Alaska in the 1950s? Beck is the Sarah Palin of right wing talk show hosts. I don’t know what’s worse, the fact that Beck knows nothing about history, or that the other two people in the conversation didn’t bother to correct him.

  1. Beck gets confused with dates and events in the heat of the moment at times. It could happen to anyone. While I agree with Beck on most of his opinions. Becks attack on Attorney General Blumenthal was asinine. Blumenthal was trying to protect the taxpayers from AIG. AIG executives FAILED to run the business properly. Last I knew a business that fails has no profits to pay executive bonuses. Not at AIG, the taxpayers get to pay for bonuses to incompetent managers. At least Blumenthal tried to protect the taxpayers, something noone else seems to be able to do. Not even Beck. Where are the American people, where are the people with power to do something about what has been going on in Washington D.C. for over eight years? Enough talk Beck and people, it’s time for action!!

  2. This man had to have missed out on long periods of time being that he spent a significant part of his life drowning in alcohol…of course Fox News is NOT a news station based on a court appearance that they admitted to…. to avoid being called a lier…so Beck fits in well!

  3. I’m glad you can be such a smart ass about an alcoholic’s struggles. I hope you never have to endure what Beck has gone through, because I know what that struggle is through personal experience. With the benefit of your superiority, I’d think you might learn how to spell liar, Mr. Brainstorm.

Wasn’t Alaska just one of the 57 states purchased before 1960?
