Pat Buchanan: Sotomayor was Picked Because She is a Passionate Latino Woman

MSNBC’s Pat Buchanan was on The McLaughlin Group where he continued to attack Sonia Sotomayor. Buchanan wondered why she didn’t defend the wise Latina comment. He also said that Sotomayor was picked because, “she is a passionate Latino woman who is a liberal.” The racism continues from Uncle Pat.

Here is the video courtesy of Media Matters:

Buchanan said, “She comes off as Sam Alito’s little sister, a strict constructionist, oh yeah, a law and order type. That is not why she was picked. She is a passionate Latino woman who is a liberal, and I think frankly, I would have liked to have seen more of her be herself.”

As if we didn’t get the point, he later called her passionate and intense:

Buchanan said, “She was like a junior in college who just wants to get through the oral exams on a pass fail basis. He doesn’t want to get high honors, and that’s what she did and quite frankly, I think she diminished herself as a figure, because she is a very passionate and intense person. She does believe in race based and ethnic based advancement for the purposes of diversity.”

He continued, “She was like a junior in college who just wants to get through the oral exams on a pass fail basis. He doesn’t want to get high honors, and that’s what she did and quite frankly, I think she diminished herself as a figure, because she is a very passionate and intense person. She does believe in race based and ethnic based advancement for the purposes of diversity.”

Buchanan just can’t help but talk about race when it comes to Sotomayor. He knows that if Sotomayor would have defended the wise Latina remark, it would have done nothing but sent the right wing media’s racist opposition to her into overdrive. Limbaugh, Savage, Buchanan and others would have filled the airwaves with charges of racism.

The Republican Party has to understand that people like Pat Buchanan are not helping their attempt to convince Hispanic voters to come back to the GOP. As far as Sotomayor’s performance is concerned, I thought it was right in line with Roberts and Alito. They were also boring, because they knew that they had enough votes to be confirmed unless they imploded during the hearings.

I didn’t think that Sonia Sotomayor’s performance was any better or worse than other nominees who have been in the same situation. Buchanan is criticizing Sotomayor for not taking a chance that could have wrecked her nomination. Maybe is she was white, Buchanan would be praising her for the very same strategy.
