Rush Limbaugh Calls Healthcare Reform Supporters Mentally Disturbed

On his radio show today, Rush Limbaugh called people who support healthcare reform mentally disturbed. Citing a poll, where 51% of people supported government intervention in healthcare, Limbaugh said, “51% of the people in this poll are absolutely mentally disturbed.” According to Rush it is crazy to support healthcare reform.

Here is the audio courtesy of Media Matters:

Limbaugh said, “Just 37% believe the quality of care they receive will be better under Obama’s plan as compared to 53% who said their care would be superior if the status quo was maintained. One bright spot in the numbers for Obama, a slim majority, 51%, said the government intervention is necessary to control costs and expand coverage, so that’s 51% of the people in this poll who are absolutely mentally disturbed.”

He added a dose of fear mongering, “It is plain common sense to understand that government does not control costs, government does not expand coverage. People are going to die prematurely with the government in charge of all this.”

If the government doesn’t control costs and expand coverage, then how does Limbaugh explain Medicare, which is government run, and does a better job at managing costs than the private sector? Let’s turn this question around, if the private sector is the answer, then why are fewer people covered, while costs continue to increase by double digits?

Limbaugh’s “common sense” doesn’t stand up to closer inspection. If it is crazy to want millions of people to be able to see a doctor, then yes, I guess I am crazy. If it is mentally disturbed to want a healthcare system where people aren’t bankrupted by illness then I am guilty as charged. If it is mentally disturbed to desire a system that places patient care ahead of corporate profits, then call the men in the white coats.

My definition of mentally disturbed involves someone who is rich, isolated, and guided by ideology that they are incapable of caring about the fact that millions of their fellow citizens are suffering every day. The truly mentally disturbed are the people like Rush Limbaugh and congressional Republicans who are looking to deny people medical care in order to push their agenda.

  3. I don’t know why health care reform are called as mentally disturbed. Those who are denying should be call as mentally disturbed.

  4. I think Limbaugh thinks we shouldn’t have to pay taxes that go to healthcare for people that don’t necessarily need it. It’s not that I don’t like to give to charity but, I don’t want to pay my good, hard earned money to help someone who doesn’t even have a job. If everyone is required to have this healthcare then so are the people whom are living off of welfare. It’s really just an unjust thing. I find it unfair that my money goes to help people who are too lazy to go and get a job when it could be used to keep my family healthy and living a good life.

  5. I find that a little self serving. The number of perennial people on Welfare is so tiny it doesnt even count and this is used as a false argument. On the other hand we now have millions that cannot get jobs, and a few who cry out that they are too lazy to work. Another false argument. Limbaugh uses “people who dont need it” to persuade people not to act as Americans. You may not need healthcare today, or this minute, but you have no idea if you will 1 hour from now. It takes one second for a person to hurt thier back who do not have insurance to become a drain on the US. What Limbaugh doesnt tell you is that you already pay for uninsured people who go to emergency rooms etc. This is the only civilized(and I use that word very loosely) country in the world that lets diabetics die from lack of medicine. He also doesnt discuss the healthcare industrys total corruption and the dropping of our children and parents off insurance rolls becuase they might effect the profit margin.

In Limbaughs world you would let your parents die for lack of medicine if they are not working. Is that you? Is that what you believe? Got Cancer but dont have insurance? See ya. Civilized people dont do that. I dont mind paying my share for everyone in this country to have insurance. I refuse to act like a Rush Limbaugh Evangelical christian who would let others die for my own meanness. I refuse the compassionate conservatism that demands we do not take care of each other based on insignificant arguments of who wont work and who will. Limbaugh shills for corporate profits and not for Americans.

Screw Rush Limbaugh. The same guy that said he was moving to Puerto Rica and didnt. I am an American and that means I am part of a country of 310 million people.
