Right wingers are always complaining about how that mean liberal Jon Stewart is always picking on them and their network Fox News, well on Monday night’s The Daily Show, Stewart unloaded on the gaffe riddled campaign of Democratic Senate candidate Martha Coakley. Check out the video.

After talking about her Curt Schilling gaffe, Stewart said, “Alright, well it’s not anything a little retail politics can’t overcome. This is Massachusetts baby, get out there due some meetin’ and greetin’. How’s that? She said what now? Apparently when The Boston Globe asked her if she was being too passive in her campaigning, she replied, ‘As opposed to standing outside Fenway Park? In the cold? Shaking hands?’ Let me see if I can field this one for you, YES! What are doing on the campaign trail? Hey, what are handing me this baby for? A kiss? You’re his mom, you kiss him.”

Stewart summed up in two minutes the problems of Martha Coakley, and how she and her campaign managed to blow a 30 point lead. Do I really need to point out that it isn’t a good sign for any candidate if they become the target on Jon Stewart’s pointed humor on election eve?

It would be very surprising, and a tribute to the Democratic organization in Massachusetts if they are able to overcome such a terrible candidate. I think that we can also put all of that right wing nonsense about Jon Stewart’s liberal media bias to bed now. Stewart is a comedian and as such, he is willing to skewer anyone who deserves it, be they Democrat or Republican.

  2. but I think his ‘real colors’ were well exposed here (although not as exposed as his 1980s centerfold for ‘Cosmo’.) That said, we can’t really tell fairly if he heard the comment. It’s hard to tell from the limited view available.

    More telling, imho, was that the crowd didn’t respond to the comment either.

    I looked up some of the background to the comment, and it appears there is serious division over the handling of the rape of a toddler. I found Coakley’s explanation plausible, but that is not the same as a response to the crime that was popular.

    While the comment about the curling iron and Coakley was clearly offensive, I’m not sure if it will be anything like enough to turn out the voters for Coakley, on such short notice. Too many people may on some level agree with it.

    What I don’t understand is why, when the polls have been showing the gap between Coakley and Brown getting narrower, the Dems didn’t jump in long before the last minute to do something about a race that is so important to the senate majority. It would seem that more than just Coakley dropped the ball.

    Which is not very reassuring quality in a potential senator.

  3. Stewart is saying that she’s supposed to get out and do all the superficial things that the other candidate can do in order to get elected. And she’s not. And that’s bad. Substance be damned!

    I understand that’s how it’s supposed to be done, but doing it doesn’t guarantee best results in the long run anyways. Re: “guy people would like to have a beer with” winning in 2004.

    All it does is once again show how superficial the whole election process is – even in MA. The Brown people (and the republicans) understand that and run with it. And they win. It’s really that simple. Factor in that politically it can’ be proven that he’s a total douche, and Coakley is far from dynamic and you have a GOP win.

  4. Found this post looking for a transcript on Stewart’s hilarious clip.

    Yes, I still think Stewart leans liberal (I’m independent myself), but he’s been widening his net lately, including the ACORN scandal, Climategate, and that git Olbermann. In fact, on a recent bit replying to Olbie’s complaint about Stewart’s satire, Jon pointed out that if he had to apologize for or retract every time some idiot in his audience said something stupid, he’d never get the show on the air. :)

    BTW, “indictment,” that stuff isn’t superficial; it’s how candidates connect with voters, but I don’t expect someone with such an obviously superior intellect and education to appreciate that. ;) {/snerk}
