Glenn Beck Claims He is Leading a Civil Rights Movement like MLK

Glenn Beck Claims that He is Martin Luther King and his 9/12 Project is Civil Rights
Beck too has a dream

On his radio show today, Glenn Beck continued to warp the legacy of the civil rights movement in the United States by claiming that his 9/12 Project and the angry white Tea Party are the next phase of the civil rights movement. Beck read the civil rights movement commitment card to audience, then said, “It looks to me like the next phase of the 9/12 Project.”

Here is the audio courtesy of Media Matters:

Beck said, “This is what they had every marcher sign, and I want to put this up on the website and I want you to sign it. This is the commitment card that they had you sign,” then he read the civil rights movement commitment card authored by Martin Luther King which states:

I hereby pledge myself—my person and body—to the nonviolent movement. Therefore I will keep the following ten commandments:

1. Meditate daily on the teachings and life of Jesus.
2. Remember always that the non—violent movement seeks justice and reconciliation — not victory.
3. Walk and talk in the manner of love, for God is love.
4. Pray daily to be used by God in order that all men might be free.
5. Sacrifice personal wishes in order that all men might be free.
6. Observe with both friend and foe the ordinary rules of courtesy.
7. Seek to perform regular service for others and for the world.
8. Refrain from the violence of fist, tongue, or heart.
9. Strive to be in good spiritual and bodily health.
10.Follow the directions of the movement and of the captain on a demonstration.

I sign this pledge, having seriously considered what I do and with the determination and will to persevere.

Besides demonstrations, I could also help the movement by: (Circle the proper items)
Run errands, Drive my car, Fix food for volunteers, Clerical work, Make phone calls, Answer phones, Mimeograph, Type, Print Signs, Distribute leaflets.

After reading the card, Beck added, “It looks to me like the next phase of the 9/12 Project.” This is yet more evidence that Beck is transitioning from media figure to full blown right wing activist. In Beck’s mind he is the white Martin Luther King liberating the repressed white conservatives from an oppressive regime that is taking away their rights and liberties. However, if you ask Beck or one of his followers exactly what rights they are defending, they will scream something about socialism.

If you follow up by asking what Obama has done that is socialistic, they will then get agitated and bellow something about health care reform. If you happen to have some free time and are feeling logical, you can point out that health care reform can’t be socialistic because there is no public option. (This is a good time to ask if they consider food safety inspections to also be socialism, because this is a reform of regulation just like health care reform). Eventually the Beck supporter will get confused by your interjection of reality and call you a socialist, all the while clutching a copy of Beck’s latest book.

My point is that Beck is mobilizing a group of angry white people who refuse to admit the real reason why they are so irate. They aren’t worried about their rights. If they were, they should have been protesting during reign of George W. Bush. The truth is that they hate Barack Obama and they are still mad that they lost the election. It makes it even worse for them that a black man has taken an office that they had developed a sense of entitlement to.

Beck’s twisting of the language of the civil rights movement is a way for the right to justify their racism. Glenn Beck is more Col. Sanders than Martin Luther King. His movement has nothing but personal anger behind it. These people have nothing in common the crusaders of the civil rights movement. Beck’s white angry mob has a level of privilege that those who participated in the civil rights movement can only dream of. Beck and company are not being persecuted. They are the angry white mob that wants their power back.

  1. Your ignorance is vast is there no end to it? It’s blatantly obvious that you do not know of source you are speaking of, if you even tuned in occasionally to Glenn Beck’s programs you would see that he is always referring to religious values, and leaders such as Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., Benjamin Franklin & others. By the way, if one wants to know what the government has done that is socialistic, all one has to do is look up the definition in the dictionary. Also, we were protesting during the Bush regime, what logic/evidence makes you assume we weren’t; please cite it. Also, if you actually went to a Tea Party rally, to research the topic you speak of you would see that there are all races included, including black. Please don’t play the race card, enough! Who is the real the racist and angry person here?

  2. He must think he is in competition with $P, he sees that the God angle works for her, so time for him to use it. These people don’t really believe in God or they would be scared to death to use him like this. If I didn’t believe in God it would be real easy to make bucks that way too. Too bad their followers put their faith in them instead of God. I would hate to be them defending my life to God after death.

  3. @adose ofreality, YOU protested bush??? You’re FULL of it. Beck is just in it for the money; do you really think he gives a damn about you and your tea party? Please. As far as all races at the teabagger parties, give me a break; it’s a bunch of angry old white men and women with a few angry young tatted hillbillies thrown in (who are most likely related to the old men and women) who are up in arms because there’s a black man in the Oval Office. And me/us, ANGRY? We’re not angry, we think beck and the teabaggers are HILARIOUS! We hope and pray you guys stick around to siphon lots and lots of votes from the republican party, and drive people away from them and you!

  4. @adose ofreality, The most African Americans ever documented at a Tea Party rally is 6. Six is not an adequate representation of the amount of African Americans in our society. Let me break it down for you, and I will type slowly so that you understand. Glenn Beck has nothing in common with MLK. The Tea Party is not a civil rights struggle. The Tea Partiers are not having ANY of their rights infringed upon. You are people who know that you are angry about Obama, but you have no idea what you are protesting. This is painfully obvious as the group switched from protesting about taxes to protesting about health care, and I am certain that they will protesting immigration reform, because conservative whitey is only capable of anger.

  5. While I had thought watching the “Party that Lost” (and the fringe groups they have spawned) IMPLODE from within, it really is pretty Sad. It has exposed so much Hate and Prejudice that we did’nt realize could still exist in 2010 America. And leading all these mental citizens is a group of hateful, hypocritical people who are using God to make millions and millions of dollars and could give a Shit? It makes me ILL to witness. The Religous Right is way scarrier than anyone ever realized. While they will, in time, Devour each other, what will it COST the rest of us? So, while it scares me and makes me sick inside, it also makes me mad. How DARE these idiots make me feel this way. I refuse to sit back and allow the paranoid and ignorant, hateful prople think they can take what they want in the name of “Their GOD” I Don’t Think So! Its time for the rest of what amounts to the Majority of sane Americans to say “Enough”! What is it going to take? Is the political terrorism they are responsible for going to cost us human life? I refuse to be “Collateral Damage” How About You?

  6. @adose ofreality,
Really, I mean do you really want to attempt to conflate the two? Talking about religious values, while claiming that those you oppose are trying to take things away from you, is in no way comparable to fighting for civil rights for an oppressed people. Who is Beck fighting for? I have communicated with Black (capital letter) Tea Party members, and they are much like Black Republicans. They hear the words, and cannot interpret the actions that are usually unsaid. Less than 1%, how do you even claim to have Black membership. To show you how little that figure represents, take a gallon of milk, then pour two ounces of chocolate milk in it, and see how little change there is.

As for Beck being a civil rights leader, he is delusional.

  7. @charlottesweb,

Such great points and I couldn’t agree more. It’s so disturbing to see this rabid, ugly behavior from fellow Americans. As for their attempt to co-opt “God”, the bible warns about people like that “wolf in sheep’s clothing” and “false prophets”.

Were one to actually follow the teachings of Christ, it would be apparent in the love they show others. One would not need to “claim” religious superiority in order to justify cruelty, bigotry, hatred, and violations of ethics.

  8. @charlottesweb,

I could not agree with you more on all your points. Don’t worry about all these evil people, they will soon destroy themselves just like all the evil movements have over our history.

  9. @srjones, It helps that my opinion is shared by others. Thank you. It is time that sane Americans speak up instead of thinking this will blow over. Imput is always welcome.

  10. I admit I am full of it, I can not tell a lie- full of the TRUTH (justice and the American way by the way). No you are not angry why would I think that? (Exhibit A “races at the teabagger parties, give me a break; it’s a bunch of angry old white men and women with a few angry young tatted hillbillies thrown in (who are most likely related to the old men and women) who are up in arms because there’s a black man in the Oval Office.”) While what you said is funny, it still paints a picture presented to you that you bought hook, line and sinker from the liberal propanda hate-breeding and dividing media. I’m just saying that if you actually investigated & educated yourself on the matter you would find otherwise. While you pray that other groups will siphon votes from the Republican Party, I pray for this country, for your & my Freedom, for your & many like your ignorance that you will wake up and see the light. Forgive them Father for they know not what they do. By the way the Tea Party movement are citizens who are protesting just in the spirit as “The Boston Tea Party’ers did on May 9, 200 yrs ago against taxation w/o representation. It’s a shame that you have to stoop to the low level of calling them “tea-baggers” & using racist words like “whitey” while touting age-discrimatory remarks about them being “old” men. You need to learn about sovereignty of the individual as protected by The Constitution- everyones rights not just black or white- that is what Glenn Beck & the Tea Party movement is for- and we’re up against a wall of ignorance & apathy leading the way. It doesn’t appear to me that you take MLK’s teachings to heart, he did not advocate racism, ageism & sexism and lumping a whole group of people together into a category. I admire MLK & taking the high road. It is unfortunate that such unfounded hate & bigotry is being imposed upon people with morals, religious values, & freedom as their stance.

  11. How is the absence of black people at tea party rallies supportive of the notion that the tea party is racist? What evidence is there that blacks were being encouraged to not come? Could it be that it’s the other way around? Obama has the support of nearly 100% of black Americans. The only possible reason for this is that his race and theirs are the same. After all, if 100% of men supported a male candidate and 100% of women supported a female candidate, we wouldn’t have any difficulty identifying sexism as the motive. So, perhaps blacks don’t go to tea party functions because THEY are racist.

Better idea: let’s stop throwing the racist card around. I don’t watch Beck very often, but I have seen enough to convince me that he’s not racist. Actually, from ads I’ve seen, he has a series on every week that educates people on unsung black heroes in American history. I have a hard time picturing David Duke or the KKK doing that.

  12. All the tea party is doing is making it harder for Republicans to unseat Obama.

I love them and hope they continue keep the Republicans off balance. I am thinking of giving them a donation.

And the posters Hilarious! Dale Robertson can’t spell the N-word, equating Obama with Hitler will alienate plenty of people. They are doing a great job to help Obama stay in the white house.

    Go Tea Party!

  13. He may be showing unsung black heroes, but the fact remains that he has been contributing to a climate of anger and hatred. I wonder if he’s doing this because his ratings have been going down and he needs to keep people interested. Sorry, but he really is appealing to an unfounded sense of grievance among some white people. That limited number is still smarting from the results of the 2008 presidential election. He also seems to speak out both sides of his mouth.

Fortunately, most whites do not fall for his okey doke. In addition, he has been no friend of women either with his revisionist history. Keep in mind that he has been making ugly, unfounded accusations against President Obama and the NAACP that they are racist. He would have to completely disavow what he has been doing and do a complete 180% change to convince this black woman that he is anything but a hatemonger.

  14. So calling the POTUS racist is in fact not racist, or saying the Obama hates white people. Here are a few racist quotes from Beck “ACORN is “enslaving people.” Beck claimed of ACORN co-founder Wade Rathke and his brother Dale: “I think I can make the case that these guys are 21st-century slave owners. They are enslaving people through ACORN.”(Glenn Beck, 9/10/09 – link)”
“Obama’s Reparations:”Everything that is getting pushed through Congress, including this health care bill” is “driven by President Obama’s thinking on … reparations” and his desire to “settle old racial scores.”(Glenn Beck, 7/23/09 – link)”
“Beck A Racist By Own Reasoning: Beck stated, ” is very white in many ways… he is. He’s very white.” Yet called Jesse Jackson racist for saying something similar.(Glenn Beck, 2/12/07 – link)” These our Beck’s own quotes compiled from the website The Glenn Beck Program a website that tracks Beck’s crazy level.
So as you can plainly see Beck is a racist!
