GOP Uses Mama Grizzlies to Attack Women’s Rights

Conservative Assault on Women's Rights
Conservative Assault on Women's Rights

So, you probably heard ala Sarah Palin that this is the Year of the Conservative Woman! Woo Hoo for equal rights! Er, wait a minute…Remember 2008, when women were expected to vote for Sarah Palin just because she was a woman? She was supposed to be our consolation prize for Hillary. Sadly for John McCain, we were not so easily duped. So, let’s look under that Year of the Conservative Woman hood to see what it stands for, shall we?

Sure, this field could be super broad, but let’s just focus on this week’s winners of the Patriarchy Award: Sharron Angle (Senate Candidate R-NV) and David Vitter (R-LA). Sharron Angle announced that she’s against abortion even when a girl is raped by her own father, and indeed, the Mama Grizzly Conservative suggests that said rape victims make “lemonade out of lemons”. But hold on to your outrage, my friends, because the compassionate conservatives also bring us David Vitter (he of the diaper changing prostitute who kept his seat because it’s OK when Republicans do it), who appointed a man who was found GUILTY of stabbing his girlfriend to be in charge of women’s issues. This man was the point man for the domestic violence coalition. No, I’m not kidding.

Let’s dive right into the bitter tang of Patriarchy on a Friday:

Republicans like to talk a lot about God’s Plan. Sharron Angle thinks God has a plan for rape victims. It sure seems like God has a plan for Sharron Angle, and it’s looking like it isn’t the US Senate. Yes, it appears that Angle is actually Harry Reid’s lemon from which he can make lemonade because this woman is ….. nuts.

Sam Stein of the Huffington Post reported on Angle’s radio interview on the conservative Alan Stock Show:

STOCK: What do you say then to a young girl, I am going to place it as he said it, when a young girl is raped by her father, let’s say, and she is pregnant. How do you explain this to her in terms of wanting her to go through the process of having the baby?

ANGLE: I think that two wrongs don’t make a right. And I have been in the situation of counseling young girls, not 13 but 15, who have had very at risk, difficult pregnancies. And my counsel was to look for some alternatives, which they did. And they found that they had made what was really a lemon situation into lemonade. Well one girl in particular moved in with the adoptive parents of her child, and they both were adopted. Both of them grew up, one graduated from high school, the other had parents that loved her and she also graduated from high school. And I’ll tell you the little girl who was born from that very poor situation came to me when she was 13 and said ‘I know what you did thank you for saving my life.’ So it is meaningful to me to err on the side of life.

Yes, it sure is meaningful for YOU, Sharron. But there are other lives involved. Perhaps you small government conservative Tea Partier should stay out of Americans’ bedrooms and their uteri? Just an idea.

Lest I get bogged down in Angle’s utter hypocrisy, let us continue on our journey to David Vitterland, where good judgment has never been much in evidence and hypocrisy rampant. Just to recap, you might recall the diaper incident, after which his wife did NOT cut off his penis as she swore she would do after Bill Clinton was demonized by the Right for…..well, blue dress, etc.

Vitter, that beacon of women’s rights, had a certain Brent Furer in charge of women’s issues. Said Brent Furer had pled guilty to attacking his girlfriend with a knife in 2008. I guess this only made him seem MORE suitable to carry out the patriarchal agenda, eh? Sort of a resume builder in the Republican Party. Oh, to be fair, we don’t know if he was appointed to be the point man on women’s issues because of his crime or in spite of it.

You have to know that Vitter denied this report as true, even as documents proved him a liar, but since the Main Stream Media is loath to point out the facts in their quest to appease the whines of the Right, Brian Beutler of Talking Points Memo got the documents to prove it:

“Brent Furer pled guilty in 2008 to attacking his girlfriend with a knife, but was nonetheless retained in Vitter’s DC legislative office in the role of legislative assistant for women’s issues until the details of Furer’s crime were publicized in late June. He subsequently resigned. In Louisiana today, Vitter categorically denied that Furer worked on women’s issues in any way. But numerous records and published accounts prove otherwise.”

All of this on the heels of Palin’s latest video claiming that conservative pink elephant mama grizzlies are going to rise up this fall out of concern for their kids has me wondering. What kind of world do these pink elephants envision for their daughters? Most American mothers don’t seem to want their daughters necessarily relegated to giving birth to a baby fathered by their father, or having an abuser be in charge of legislation regarding domestic violence.

Maybe it’s just me, but I can’t see these positions as making any sense at all. Maybe the problem is that the People aren’t looking at the positions, they’re just buying the Image. While these are but two examples in a given week of Republican patriarchy, we don’t hear any repudiation of these positions by anyone on the Right.

They can dress it up and call it the year of the Conservative Woman, but it’s the same old patriarchy as before.

  1. Love what you have to say. Some of the things that seem obvious to those of us who can still reason seem to be lost on the Right. They have alienated most everybody – Hispanics, Blacks, Jews, now they’re stepping up the pressure on women. That’s not to say they can’t pull a Nazi-like co-opting of women but I don’t think it’s likely. Women for some reason like to think of themselves as people to, equal to men, and the patriarchal xeno- and homo- phobic religious conservatives on the Right just don’t get that. Picking a guy who knifes his girlfriend makes perfect sense when you look at their rhetoric on the topic.

  2. The Party of No is trying to make itself more palatable by putting out women like Palin or Angle, or black men like Steele. The problem is that the difference is only cosmetic, as there is no change in the rigid, far-right ideology that is so repellent.

People like Palin, Bachmann, and Angle are not for women’s rights, but for the reactionary policies and ideas that made the women’s movement necessary in the first place. So, voting for any of them, as well as for bozos like Vitter, is a vote for regressive policies that set women back by years.

  3. Good article. The GOP is and has been against women’s rights all along the way. From top to bottom they fight to deprive women of equal rights and they continue unabated. If they get control of the Legislature, women will suffer as much as the poor and minorities.

What is amazing is that women support the GOP at all. I keep thinking that if GOP women really knew what’s in store, they would revolt. It turns out that they know and approve. Women would not even be allowed to vote if Cons could pull it off. Shameful and mortifying.

  4. It’s not year of the conservative women they’re harolding in……it’s the year of the Christian Evangelical woman, and oh yeah, the men will get behind that one because they’ll gladly ‘use’ their women to gain power, and sorry to say some women are clueless to it.

I do not want our government run by religious fanatics on a power trip.

Have you noticed how many of the tea baggers are Christians?

We might as well call them in the name of Christ lets get in government(baggers).

I don’t mind people having faith, but when their faith dictates policy in a free country such as abortion rights, I say wait a minute.

And when their ulterior motivation is to get their people into all areas of our government from school board to President it scares the crap out of me.

  5. I think totally the opposite. From what I’ve been reading the Evangelical movement has been losing favor somewhat in the Republican Party. I’ve also read that many of the young people coming into the GOP are pro-choice, thinking that that is a right that you have.

So like everyone I think it’s going to be very interesting to find out what support the GOP has for their platform and for whom

  6. Wow! Just when I think they’ve topped themselves, the ‘Pubes pull another WHOPPER!
“The Year of the (Conservative) Woman” – from Sarah “Tool for Hire” Palin.
And Brent “The Knife” Furer on a domestic violence coalition? WTF?
I challenge any liberal to make this shit up. It can’t be done! Why? Because the first prerequisite to being a ‘Pube is that you LEAVE YOUR MIND AT THE DOOR!

  7. SARAH PALIN & THE REPUBS for WOMEN’S RIGHTS???? Just for starters? They voted against the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act! She is the biggest two faced lying idiot in the world! SARAH PALIN HERSELF –AS GOVERNOR OF ALASKA–NOW 1/2ASSLOSER–MADE WOMEN PAY FOR THEIR RAPE KITS!!!!! It just doesn’t get any better than that does it sarah? Does she honestly think we don’t read like her??? Is that their idea of a conservative woman representing women’s right??? The audacity of this woman! Does she ever stop? She is so insulting to WOMEN’S INTEGRITY. She honestly thinks we’re all going to NOW jump on the band wagon to represent women sarah’s way? She cracks me up.. she actually believes she’s saying something so powerful and profound! And any one that does..well..you did see the video? only older senior caucasion ladies (as if)..barely any youngins (plaeaaase)..hardly any her age….(uh…) no people of color (not surprised) and no asians (we’re uncomfortable around them). Yup..you got my vote sarah. We’re coming!! us GRIZZLY BEARS who protect our cubs and don’t shit in the woods..oh no….and PINK ELEPHANTS TOO who do shit in the woods! we are a comin..Nov 2! Can I just say? That has got to be theeee most hokiest bullcrap I have ever heard in my life! LOL! What a WHACKED OUT LOSER that woman is! This is what I call desperate both for palin and the repubs. We are truly reaching at straws here. WHY DO WOMEN SUPPORT THE GOP? WHAT IS YOUR INTEREST? WHAT HAVE YOU GAINED BY THEIR REPRESENTATION? WHY DO YOU HAVE SUCH LOW SELF ESTEEM AND SELFWORTH FOR YOURSELVES? ….crickets…

  8. palin and her ilk are the ones always accusing PresObama of trying to shove stuff down our throats..shut up and sit down (her favorite accusation) claims he’s trying to take away our religion ..when? where? and why would he? Such blatant liars! They are the very ones doing it. Then turn and accuse Obama. They want to dictate to us how to live and what to read and not read. Change history books to accomodate their beliefs! But they call Obama the…well, I forget now. They’ve called him every izm/ism name out there. And just love the way they do that. They’re so..well, TRANSPARENT LIARS!

  9. Disliking someone because of race or gender is one thing. But people who dislike Palin, Angle, and Steele dislike them because of their politics. As for your idiotic remark about me being
a misogynist and a racist, I am a black woman, FYI. I don’t relate to any of these people because the women I have named would set women’s rights back given the opportunity. Steele himself does not represent the views of most blacks of either sex. Most of us blacks look at him as a bad joke and a non-stop gaffe machine just like Palin, Bachmann, and Angle.

Both Steele and Palin were chosen as GOP counters to President Obama and Secretary Clinton, respectively. It’s not my fault that neither one holds a candle to Obama or Clinton. It was GOP stupidity that assumed women disappointed by Clinton’s defeat in the nomination process would vote for Palin in droves just because she is a woman. By the same token, Steele was picked to help draw more blacks to the GOP. Neither one happened, because the women and the blacks who rejected both could see that they presented the far right ideology that is unappealing to so many.
This was in addition to their well-deserved reputations as gaffe machines.

  10. Way to totally miss the point and avoid responsibility. LOL. You conservatives. Is this all you have? Clenis?

    1) Clinton didn’t run on moral authority/moral majority/family values

    2) It says a lot that you think being raped and forced to give birth to your father’s baby is the same thing as what Monica Lewinsky and Bill Clinton did. You also equate stabbing one’s girlfriend and then being in charge of domestic violence with Clenis.

3)Bill Clinton’s policy’s HELPED women, they did not harm women. What is so hard to understand about that?

    4) Liberals don’t care what people do in their personal lives and since they don’t run on being God’s chosen family values who can and should tell everyone else what to do, this is not a conflict. Let me say it super slowly: this is why it’s hypocritical when the family values christians stab their girl friends or cheat on their wives. That’s your whole platform up in smoke!

    5) “small government” conservatives should stay out of my uterus.

  11. It may appear that people are talking to themselves here, but in reality we’ve chosen to delete certain comments from someone whose commenting privileges were revoked after multiple transgressions.

    Carry on.

  12. good post, except for the fact there is no such thing as a small government conservative. Conservatives talk small government but they are the ones who also want to censor what you read and what you watch, what you do in your bedroom etc. That is going to take a pretty good-sized government to patrol all that. Most of our small government conservatives want to spend the vast majority of our budget on defense. That’s not small government unless you take away every single thing the citizens have. Once they’ve done that you’ve lost all your rights you’ve lost your constitution.

The teabag party and Sarah Palen are the path back to the fifth century.

  13. Another well written piece from a brain..unlike the rants one would find on say….American Thinker….WND….
Surprised this hasn’t been attacked by a slew of ant-feminists who claim God is a Conservative.
The hubris exhibited by the anti-women running in place and claiming to be for “Christian Women” are putting women’s rights back centuries…Chattle to the patriachy and thinking they have “power” as long as they bat their well painted lashes and wink at the drooling testosterone deprived old balding white lechers, they can’t quite understand that this form of promotion is very ANTI-woman. It is the encouragement of cat calls that keeps oppression front and center and they don’t even see they are oppressed.
It has often been said that Sarah did not make a decision without the “first dude” and that he was present in every meeting assuring his agenda while she played house in the Gov’s mansion, lying in her tanning bed to assure the optimum glow…THAT is exactly what these bimbettes of the faux CONservative expulsion are about. They have to have a brain behind them and it is not their brain, they have chosen a misogynist to put ideas in their heads..
That is as anti-woman as it comes. They bought the “woman isn’t as smart enough so use sex to sell yourself” and use it to keep them in favor with the old ED crowd. Viagra dosing for the GOP

  14. Not all conservatives are as loopy as Vitter and Angle. Turns out those types of conservatives are the ones who woo people to vote for them.

I consider myself conservative, and have met many many people who feel the same way as I.

    1. Pro Choice -it is a personal life choice and no one else needs to open their pie hole about it.

    2. Religious ‘values’-again this is a personal choice thing and not a public soapbox.

    3. Small government- people should be responsible for themselves and not be reliant to any government to tell them/give them/allow them to do anything. Without all the laws to worry about there is no need for so many government positions. With the speed of communications today government should be streamlined by now. But it is bigger than ever.

Emergencies aside, no one should be whining for more government handouts. There are charities that are around just for those who need -whatever. If a person does not like something, follow the laws to change it or move to a different area! It is a big, and so far, free country.

  15. I remember one very disappointing Christmas as a child. I had very
much wanted a slot-car racing set, and instead under the tree there
was this wind-up contraption with magnets and toy cars. Wind it up,
get the same result every time. But I was told it was “Just The
Same Thing.” Well, in some ways, I suppose. Steele is Black, and
looks kinda goofy at times. So does Obama. Palin is blonde and
looks good in red. So does Clinton. Almost every completely
identical in every sense except, you know, the ones that actually
    matter.

  16. “It has often been said that Sarah did not make a decision without
the “first dude” and that he was present in every meeting assuring
his agenda while she played house in the Gov’s mansion,” You know,
that’s ordinarily a good thing. I can’t think of the number of
times I’ve run something by my wife, she’s gotten That Very
Compassionate Look, and I realize I’ve been about to do or say
something stupid. But clearly that just isn’t part of their family
    dynamic. ;}

  17. Why should Republicans care about laws to make women have their rapist baby?
They killed Martin Luther King, Kennedy, Abraham Lincoln, & invaded Iraq. They want to cut Social Security, the VA -Immagration- Gay Marriage-Unemployment-Medicare-Healthcare & The Department of Education!- Why? So rich people won’t pay taxes. What more can you expect from a bunch of Satanist!
