Keith Olbermann Destroys the Myth of the Ground Zero Mosque

In a blistering special comment on his MSNBC program Countdown, Keith Olbermann dispelled the hysteria and politically motivated fear of the so called Ground Zero Mosque. Olbermann said, “What better way could we honor the dead of the World Trade Center than to do the terrorists heavy lifting for them?”

Olbermann described the Right’s campaign as, “Yet in a country dedicated to freedom, forces have gathered to blow out of all proportion the construction of a minor community center to transform it into a training ground for terrorists, and an insult to the victims of 9/11, and a tribute to the Medieval Muslim subjugation of the West. There is in fact no Ground Zero Mosque. It isn’t a mosque. A mosque technically is a Muslim holy place where only worship can be conducted. What is planned for 45 Park Place New York City is a community center. It’s supposed to include a basketball court and a culinary school. It is to be thirteen stories tall, and the top two stories will be a Muslim prayer space. What a cauldron to terrorism that will be, terrorist chefs and terrorist point guards.”

Olbermann pointed out that since 9/11 Muslims have been at greater risk of being victims of US terrorism than non-Muslims. After he debunked Newt Gingrich’s fear mongering over the name Cordoba House, which he called a figment of Gingrich’s imagination, the MSNBC host pointed out that the community center will be open to all New Yorkers.

He also knocked down the falsehood that the community center is located on Ground Zero, “This place Park 51 is not even at Ground Zero, not even right across the street. Even the description of it being two blocks away is generous. It is two blocks away from the northeast corner of the World Trade Center site, from the planned location of the 9/11 Memorial, it is more like four or five blocks even.” Olbermann showed that there is no view of the World Trade Center visible from the community center.

Olbermann also pointed out that the official explanation for the Iraq invasion was the liberation of the Iraqi people, but, “Well who lives in Iraq? Muslims. I hate to reveal this to anybody on the Right who did not know this but when they say Iraq is 65% Shiia and 32% Sunni you don’t know that Shiia and Sunni are both forms of the Muslim religion, right? We sacrificed 4,415 of our military personnel in Iraq to save Muslims, and there are thousands of us still there tonight to protect Muslims, but we don’t want Muslims to open a combination culinary school and prayer space in Manhattan?”

He later said that by selling out our freedoms the terrorists win, “The terrorists who destroyed the buildings from which you could only see 45 Park Place as a dot on the ground wanted to force us to change our country to become more like the ones they knew. What better way could we honor the dead of the World Trade Center than to do the terrorists heavy lifting for them?” Olbermann concluded by pointing out that the actual place that is the actual equivalent of a Ground Zero Mosque has been up and running since before the World Trade Center was open.

This was one of the better special comments that Olbermann has delivered in a long time. Olbermann took apart the politically motivated hysteria behind the ginned up Ground Zero Mosque story with facts, and maps, and pictures. The Countdown host said it best. There is no Ground Zero Mosque, but what he didn’t add is that this whole story is a shameless and sleazy attempt to scare a group of ignorant and vulnerable people about Muslims, in the hopes of getting to vote Republican in November 2010 and 2012.

It is ironic that the same people who label themselves patriots have no qualms over destroying the basic freedoms our nation, which they claim to love and hold so dear. These same people who are so willing to sell out our freedoms are the greatest and most lasting victory for the 9/11 terrorists. They are the legacy of the hijackers. These people who are so governed by fear that they are willing to take away what the terrorists hated, are not only Osama Bin Laden’s legacy, but they are also the biggest threat to our freedoms as Americans.

  1. He sure reminded me why I dont buy the crap that he is over the edge. This man tells it like it is. The republicans are attacking the rights of Americans where ever they can.
Gingrich makes me sick. I used to think him a very smart fellow but now he is just running alongside the GOP train looking for a hand up.

  3. This was an especially heartening “Special Commentary” from Olberman, and something that we shouldn’t just be hearing from MSNBC but mainline commentators on ABC, CBS, and NBC.

  4. Brilliantly done, Mr. Olbermann. I was watching FOX the other day and they were complaining that the government has no right to dictate religion or mosque locations, etc., as if the government has decided that there must be a mosque there. The government has nothing to do with it, except upholding the Free Exercise Clause and the rest of the Constitution FOX and conservatives hate so much.

  5. This episode only underscores just how selective the “patriotism” of the far right is.
Apparently, they regard Muslims as anti-American, regardless of the fact that many have lived peacefully in this country for decades. There is also their cavalier disregard of the fact that many Muslims also were affected by 9-11, either by losing their own lives or losing loved ones. Both Olbermann and the Muslim 9-11 responder were brilliant in their rebuttals of the nonsense coming from Gingrich, Palin, and others.

I firmly believe it is a measure of their desperation that they would pick a fight which reflects them at their absolute worst. In their quest to whip up hatred, they have deliberately distorted the relevant facts, which do not support their overheated rhetoric. Unfortunately, there are people in this country who are just dumb enough to buy into their idiocy without determining facts, in spite of the fact that the policies the far right espouses have been so detrimental to them.

  6. What’s shameless is the author’s reference to “ignorant and vulnerable people”. Another elitist assertion by a member of the Smartest Person In The Room club.

  7. Matt, the use of the word “ignorant” was not a cut-down, but a description of the level of information the people he’s referring to have access to. And because of this lack of information access, they are vulnerable to making snap decisions about the world around them.
I am just as ignorant until I seek out more information on the subject I know little of. Not everyone does that. Yes, it’s a gross exaggeration to lump a great many American into that group of inactive researchers, but do you think it’s so unfair?
And compared to other things I’ve been reading on this subject, THIS was incredibly intelligent and rather lacking too much shameless blame. So, yeah, he kinda is in that Smartest Person In The Room club, but not with much ego, frankly. Come on, Matt.

  8. Yeah, THAT! :)

At this point, any righties who complain about the “Mosque” are going to get a “why do you hate America and the constitution?” from me.

Seriously, this shit pisses me off. Also the proposition 8 idiocy. My mind is entirely blown by the blatant, militant stupidity of those idiots crying that their constitutional rights are being trashed because some wise judge, who is actually doing his job correctly, is telling them that they are not allowed to pass legislation that infringes the rights of others, no matter how big their torch wielding mob is.

Gotta love the way the self-proclaimed “patriots” and “real Americans” have no clue what the constitution is for. At this point, it’s beginning to seem like patriot = traitor.

Also, I’m still waiting for the teabaggers to demand a wall between America and Canada. You know, because they’re all just about “protecting our nation” and not anything racist… oh no, of course not…

  9. Keith Olbermann has always been brilliant and he always tells it like it is.
We have watched him since the beginning of his show.

  10. So you think that Osama bin laden would be sad about a replacing the WTC with a huge mosque? You can call it whatever you want to, it’s still worse Thames a slap in the face to America and all the victims of 9/11

  11. It’s a slap in the face is it? How? Are you stupid? Did you not listen to half the things Olbermann said. It isn’t anywhere near Ground Zero. It’s a community centre not a mosque. You wouldn’t have an issue with a synagogue or a church being built FIVE BLOCKS away from Ground Zero why a mosque? Simply because you’re all just building up this hate towards Muslims. Trying to ignite some hysteria that all Muslims are gun weilding terrorists. Well, I hate to break it to you but the majority of Muslims do not agree with terrorists, and were just as hurt and affected by 9/11 as Christians, Jews, Atheists and every other American you can add.

Stop being so damn ignorant and go and learn more about Muslims before you spout rubbish.

  12. Anyone who thinks this is about religious freedom is totally off base. You have a radical Islamic who wants a mosque built 2 blocks from the WTC site, by 9/11/11. This is nothing more than a ploy by political islam.

  13. Ben,

it would be better if you check the profile of the Imam to know how radical he is…and what purpose would this “community center” (NOT a “mosque) serve??? that America stooped beneath Islam? this is the kind of mentality that extremists have and you surely have the same mentality. the extremists always give the notion that America is against Islam and its values…surely there cannot be a better response by USA by allowing the construction of this community center to prove the detractors wrong…a slap on the face of the extremists

its not an islamic scheme or machination….its just a republican ploy to gain political points over the democrats…they have just created a hysteria over this issue and the media went along with it
