Jimmy Carter Takes A Stand Against Glenn Beck and Fox News

Former President Jimmy Carter was on CNN’s Reliable Sources today where he took aim at both Fox News and Glenn Beck for what he described as deliberately distorting the news. Carter said,”The talk shows with Glenn Beck and others on Fox News, I think, have deliberately distorted the news.”

Here is the video courtesy of Media Matters:

When asked by Reliable Sources host Howard Kurtz about his comments in his recent book critical of the 24 hour news networks’ reliance on dramatization and exaggeration, Carter let loose on both Glenn Beck and Fox News, “The talk shows with Glenn Beck and others on Fox News, I think, have deliberately distorted the news. And it’s become highly competitive. And my Republican friends say that MSNBC might be just as biased on the other side in supporting the Democratic Party, the liberal element. But that’s part of give and take. And I think CNN, more than others, has kind of tried to play the middle to their detriment as far as viewership is concerned and profits are concerned. So, I think that describes maybe more than I — more than my credentials warrant about what I think about — quickly the balance.”

It is interesting that Carter would go on to include MSNBC in the discussion. Many on the left including MSNBC hosts like Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann have decried the false equivalency that was first brought up by Jon Stewart at his Rally to Restore Sanity between MSNBC and Fox News, but President Carter didn’t actually say that he believed that MSNBC distorted the news like Fox does, but that Republicans believe that MSNBC does the same thing that FNC does, which is a very accurate statement.

Republicans do love to lump MSNBC and Fox News together, but beyond the basic format of presenting programming from a partisan perspective, the two networks could not be more different. Fox News operates as not just a Republican information source, but the network institutionally engages in fund raising and political activity for the Republican Party. MSNBC may put liberal hosts on the air, but they have never fund raised for candidates, nor has MSNBC promoted something like the Tea Party Express.

President Carter’s bigger point is dead on. As more Americans limit themselves to news sources that reinforce their partisan biases, whether they be on the left or right, facts become distorted and warped as they are presented through the prism of partisan narrative. The news has gone from being about what is happening in the world to information that is used on both sides to attribute credit or blame for what is happening in the world to an ideology.

When people stop agreeing on facts, it tears away at the fabric of our society. If we can’t be united in agreement and acceptance of fact then the fragmentation that not only plagues our politics will spill out into the nation itself. Glenn Beck and Fox News have found that distorting the news is a very profitable enterprise. They don’t care about the toxic waste their enterprise is leaving behind. They are the foremost intellectual polluters of the American mind, and it is encouraging to see Jimmy Carter call them out.

  1. By saying “Americans limit themselves to news sources that reinforce their partisan biases, whether they be on the left or right, facts become distorted and warped as they are presented through the prism of partisan narrative” Mr. Easley is also under the assumption that MSNBC distorts facts. It is, undeniably, partisan left, but they don’t fudge facts to push their idiology like FOX does. Everyone seems to be unable to distinguish THAT fact.

  2. I think there is a vast difference between leaning left or right, and totally distorting the news.

To that degree you cannot compare Fox to MSNBC. You will seldom find a time that Maddaw and Olbermann tell out and out lies beucase their news vetting is impeccable. But they do take a liberal stance.

On the other hand take Sean Hannity. He cant tell the truth to save his life. Beck just makes up silly wild conspiracys and people buy into them like brain dead zombies. Yet they do take a conservative stance.

Thats the difference as you say. One is liberal and one is conservative. And thats fine. One cant tell the truth under most circumstances and one does. As far as I’m concerned, thats not fine.

  3. From the right we do not view Fox News as right or left. There is a difference between “News” and “Opinion”. Hannidy, Beck, and O’Reilly are all opinion shows and two of the three lean far right. O’Reilly is more centrist than the other two but a stanch Catholic who is both pro-life and socially conservative. Even though he is right wing, Hannidy often includes guest with opposing views as does O’Reilly. It is common knowledge that the ownership of Fox is left wing. I am of the opinion that the rightward slant of opinion shows on Fox has been the result of savvy business model to corner an untapped market.
MS-NBC on the other hand has been owned by GE, a terrible mix of a monopolistic corporation and news, hardly unbiased. Problem was that MS-NBC had the duel role of promoting news and the interest of GE! I am glad to see GE somewhat out of the picture, but ownership by Comcast may be little better.
News is news from any quarter. To report the results of the recent election for example does not require a partisan view, only the ability to read election results. How can that be partisan?
There is no question that some in the news field especially on the left and at MS-NBC tend to editorialize the presentation of the news as say a Hannidy would do on the right. The difference is that the Fox stars do not claim that their editorial shows are news shows. At MS-NBC the lines between news and editorial have been very blurred.
It has also been public knowledge that news anchors have for years tended to be “left wing”. Most in the news industry vote and support Democrats. I am a UGA graduate and it is impossible for me not to support the Georgia Bulldogs. Likewise, it is impossible for the bias of a left wing liberal news caster or the same on the right not to bleed through in the presentation of the news. There are exceptions, but they are few and growing fewer. Those of us who are news consumers are going to have to learn to “eat fish and spit out the bones”. Let the news buyer beware, but the last thing we need is for the government to step in and lop off the extremes. Thankfully such action is forbidden by the Bill of Rights. I can tolerate the rants on MS-NBC or more wisely, just ignore them. Can those of you who are on the left tolerate or ignore the rants on Fox?

  4. Common knowledge that the ownership of Fox is left wing? You are out of your mind. Google Rupert Murdoch. The truth of claims on any channel can be checked and Fox continually spews falsehoods. Is it Fox that told you Fox isn’t owned by Rupert Murdoch? Did Fox forget to mention another of their owners is a Saudi fellow that Beck calls a terrorist supporter?

Fox employees are entitled to their own opinions but not their own facts.

  5. Come on, Murdoch is a big lib! He contributed to the Obama campaign (check the public campaign disclosure forms). He is also a good business mind and sees the demand for a right leaning news/opinion channel! So you think he is a sell out if he allows the right wing stuff on Fox?
The Saudis have money and buy into any profitable US company including NYT, GE, or you name it. We do have a somewhat free economy. Sorry, forgot that GE and NYT have not been profitable lately. My bad. I doubt there is any major US public corporation that does not have Saudi money involved in ownership. That claim is frivolous.
Now you have claimed that Fox gets the facts wrong. Pony up! What facts are miss stated on a news cast? Date and time and newscaster? (Beck, Hannity, and O’Reilly are not news casters by their own claims.) Remember, news facts are news facts, and opinion is opinion. Do you wish to kill Fox because you do not agree with some of their political opinion?

  6. I am not American and would generally not comment on something like this but i find your comments a bit too ridiculous to ignore. For a start Murdoch is Australian, as I am, and i can tell you flat out that the news networks he owns here that aren’t directed at gossip are directed at shooting down anything left wing (which is similar story in England). Just because someone contributes money to something does not mean they subscribe to its ideology, especially considering the donations you mentioned (i am taking on faith that you are correct) were published. Meaning it is fair to infer he could be doing this purely for the good press. I also remember last year there was press about the 1 million dollar donation News Corp made to the Republican Party. So its not as if he was contributing exclusively to the Democratic party is it?

Now coming to your second point about Fox News spewing falsehoods, Facts are Facts certainly, but it is incredibly easy to spew out facts with a slant either way. I doubt most people that watch Fox News could actually name a person on the channel who is purely a news Caster, all of their stars and the people who bring in the ratings and numbers are just talking points machines like Beck, Hannity and O’Reilly. I think its hardly right for them to be calling themselves a news channel at all, considering how much their programming is dominated by opinion. Now i do have a couple of examples of them spewing out blatant lies, for example this recent Obama spending $200million a dollar on this trip, the stuff about Obama “indoctrinating” children because of that school who sung the song about him, pretty much anything to do with the healthcare bill… i could go on but im sure you know more about it than i do…

  7. He donated millions to the GOP, but I think you know that. It was all over the news. Would you like a link to Media Matters? They do a great job of making lists of lies by Beck and O’Rielly. You would probably call Media Matters a left-wing site but then they do cite their sources and back up all claims with evidence. Did you forget that Fox went to court to protect their right to lie? You can google that, you sound like you could use an education…. but then your lies are too ridiculous to be remotely believable. Even extremist nutjobs know how outrageously conservative Murdoch is. His papers are famous for it, his news stations are famous for it.

At this point you are just a troll. Nobody other than a troll or a living-in-the-woods future unabomber would be saying what you have to say.

  8. I find that liberal nut-jobs are often the ones to claim “troll” when someone disagrees with their slant.

  9. If the left thinks you are on the right and the right think you are on the left then you are probably doing the right thing but are likely to be hated by both sides as being partisan so not trusted by either.
Being open to new ideas and being able to process information you are given in logical ways stops people from becoming extremists and allows them to contribute to the betterment of society.

  10. Another typical liberal rant with no examples of what has been distorted. MSNBC hosts donate to liberal candidates. Liberals cannot discuss ideas only insult people.

  11. America America America who do you love. Fox is the hen in the hen house.
Truth has no Value. What they have done is deceived the public into we are looking out for you. But what they are looking out for is feeding the American public a line of sensationalism and making money . Human like to have their sensed sensitive be stimulated by truth shaded thus causing a sensation of senses and arousing an intense and superficial interest or emotional reaction. This what is feeding the deceiver fox. We all like to think we can handle knowledge and that we know it all, but the lie is the fastest moving sense stimulator in human we love a lie That is how Satan (The father of the lie) got under Eve then the man. Look at all American election lately. These are all big lie debates. A person can not come to the leadership of this nation with the Truth. You can only do it with deception and money to tell the lie faster then your opponents.

  12. “Liberals cannot discuss ideas only insult people.”
The irony is astounding. Also, generalizations are wonderful tools for having effective discussions.

If you still actually believe that FNC is balanced ideologically you are blatantly ignoring reason. It’s futile to attempt to educate someone who so deliberately and staunchly wishes to remain uninformed.

  13. Gotta love it!!! First things first, let us differeniate between a news caster and a commentator, at times ans why to frequently there seems to be a blur and the news reporting is baised on what and how they report it and opinoins are interjected which is fine as long as they are stated that way.News has become entertainment and this 24/7 news must be filled with something albeit some of it is nonsense and promotion of views, but you do have the choice to respond and speak up, change the channel anf seek other channels of news.It would be nice for those news people to clearly state their positions as to keep their message clear to others.Thank God and our freedom fighters that we have the ability and privilige to speak freely and have this sometimes commical news situation. To the glenn becks to the rush l. to the howard sterns and even to sarah palins of the world thank you for showing me what America is and for the great lines you all give to the commedians. Happy thanksgiving

  14. Anonymous!
Murdoch donating 2 million to GOP causes isn’t slant, its fact. Deal with it. Fox employees lying on air? Fact. Backed up with video. Not opinion, not slant, verifiable facts. Or are you the kind of person who wants to be lied to as long as those lies agree with your personal opinions? If so, please seek help.

If reality is too much for you to deal with that isn’t my problem. You can join Lmack49 in the woods, maybe write your own manifesto.

  15. Once the comment “left-wing nut job” is used you are immediately pegged as a Right-Wing nutjob, and therefore, have ZERO credibility as anything but – waiting? a TROLL!!!!

  16. It is Republicans who are world famous for villifying and demonizing Democratic public servants and using put-downs and insults when speaking of those with whom they disagree. Anytime someone on the left uses their tactics against them they cry like babies. Get used to it – the Left Side Patriots are rising against the Tea Party, the Neo-Cons and the DINOs. There will be no quarter given and no prisoners taken. Retake the Democracy!

  17. Easy to make accusations without having to back up your statements with facts. One thing I have noticed is the “right” tend to use facts and examples to verify statements while the “left” uses slander and emotional thoughts and feelings.

  18. He also said that Carter wasn’t buying the false equivalency between the two, so I think you might have missed his point. The two are not the same, and as Jason Easley has pointed out in other posts, Fox is the only networks that actively raises money for candidates of one party, as well as contributing to them. Having two one air talent give money to GOP and Democratic candidate are not same thing as an entire network devoted to raising money for Republican candidates.

  19. You obviously know that you are lying and distorting reality which makes you either a paid troll or a moron. It is a matter of record that only Fox raises money on air for candidates and only Fox network gave millions to one party. Two hosts on MSNBC gave a few thousand or hundred to both parties (one to each) and were suspended for it.

Tell us how these are the same again? Show us MSNBC raising money on air for candidates? It’s beyond disgusting to see people like you lie deliberately in order to save face.

  20. You’re joking, right?!

Death panels? Calling folks socialist/fascist/communist (as if they were synonyms!) at every turn?

Fox is so fact-free, gut-intensive I’m surprised all the viewership doesn’t have ulcers.

  21. For a long, long time I have been saying ..”the Republican Party is going to destroy our country”…I have seen that in countries that adopted policies GOP like; they are all in ruins. They are nowhere politically, financially, and socially.
I believe my fellow Americans are blind and do not see that. I would also add, FOX news lies openly and alienate us, against each other. “Divide and you will win” …
I honestly don’t mind who is the president, left or right, as long as our country goes back to number one again. We are a blessed land, we have it all. But it seems that a few or many, for the matter, want the end of the U. S. as we have always known it.

  22. This debate like Ford vs. Chevy, Linux vs. Microsoft, and bottled vs. draught beer is a strictly a religious debate – and, therefore, a complete waste of time.

  23. Maddow is nothing like Beck. Beck preys on fear and a Republican base that is (generally) less educated but more religious than the Democrats/Independents. I’ve heard Maddow speak and while she is definitely adamant she at least bases her show on fact and reality. Beck (and the others) are ruining America and will say anything for a buck.

  24. It’s almost criminal some of the things that Beck and Rush say. They should be ashamed of themselves.

  25. There are plenty of cases outside the trio of usual suspects, beck, hannity, o’reilly, of Fox news anchors making up facts or distorting the truth. Buying into conspiracy theories without any factual basis means you are not living up to journalistic standards. But if you claim that they are opinion shows then you need to have a big disclaimer for your viewers so that they know they are listening to opinions not facts. Basically a WARNING: Fox News does not endorse or validate any arguments or positiions discussed on this show. But it doesn’t and so most people in this country still believe Saddam planned 9/11, Obama is a Muslim born in Kenya, and Sarah Palin would be a competent President.

  26. No, because MSNBC is not a cancer on America. They are not turning network news into propaganda that funds one party.

And besides, Bush isn’t known for his brilliance and yet Carter is. too bad the flipping ignorant Republicans took his solar panels off the WH. Drill here, drill now.

  27. Are you people serious?

Have you ever seen a conservative News/Opinion commentator ever call for the censure or obliteration of an opposing viewpoint? I have watched and listened to various sources on both sides for all of my adult life and have yet to hear it. I might have missed a case or two but I doubt it.

The chatter to STOP Glenn Beck and Fox News or shut down Rush has been getting worse. Why? Can’t you just change the channel? Can’t you just tune it out? You have your position we have ours. TO STOP GLENN AND FOX YOU WOULD HAVE TO CHANGE THE BILL OF RIGHTS!!!. Is that what you really want? You wonder why we call you socialists. Hugo Chaves has done it. Is that what you want??? I truly believe that that is EXACTLY what you want. Your MESSIAH has awakened the sleeping giant that is the conservative majority in this country and the next decade will see the biggest decrease in government in 3 generations…

Bert Chadwick??? What countries have suffered from GOP’ish policies??? Small government, free market, fiscal responsibility, moral responsibility, etc?

  28. Americans need to wake up the fact that Beck is simply another opinion pushing charlatan who is a product of mormon cult theology that he mixes with parts of Catholicism and his personal core as a dry alcoholic. He consistently demonstrates all the unstable behaviors of a dry alcoholic which include grandiosity, judgmentalism, intolerance, impulsivity, ADD and indecisiveness. Because Beck does not possess a single ounce of journalistic integrity, he is the perfect abortion poster child for Fox Network. Beck is just another predatory neocon who is pushing the buttons of very impressionable people who love being told what to think and believe.

People need to wake up the fact that Glenn Beck is simply another opinion pushing charlatan who is a product of mormon cult theology that he mixes with parts of Catholicism and his personal core as a dry alcoholic. And for the record, he is a Mormon and not a Christian. The two are not the same as one is a cult and the other is a religion. This makes Glenn Beck one very twisted screwed up moron who sold his soul to the lowest common denominator of personal stupidity. The religion of Islam has more in common with Christianity than the mormon cult.

The truth about Beck is that he a dry mormon alcoholic who never got the counseling required for alcoholics. Because he does not possess a single ounce of journalistic integrity, this makes him the perfect abortion poster child for Fox Network. Considering the fact that Beck’s personal views are extreme Marxist Libertarian, his form of patriotism is false and he is a person who has no real substance or depth.

  29. It’s pretty hard to swallow Fox’s ‘factual hard news’ coverage when 90% of their programming is these lying sacks of sht, pontificating douche-bags, Hannity, et al. Saddam bombed Pearl Harbor, too.

  30. Not at all. If there were no verifiable facts you might have a point. Generally those who speak like that would say things like both parties are equally corrupt, etc…. which is obviously (and provably) false. Of the two evils, one is clearly lesser. If you truly think that politics is a waste of time then you are opting out of the chance to improve your country, yet my guess is that you complain about the status quo. Am I right?

  31. ….What? You haven’t heard Beck call those who disagree with him Nazis? Or O’Rielly? Isn’t Fox constantly equating being a liberal with being a communist? You doubt that you have ever heard that? Do you need to see a compilation video of O’Rielly telling his guests to shut up on-air?

You cannot honestly believe what you say, not if you actually understand your own words. Nobody is asking people to censure Beck or O’Rielly, so you are arguing against a straw man. Making them speak the truth and holding them to their word? Absolutely. Confronting their mindless followers who can’t seem to admit to the truth even when years worth of accumulated video evidence are staring them in the face? You take such a ridiculous caricature of what the left wants that you show you neither understand your opponents nor have the will to deal with their concerns rationally.

  32. JTK…

Did you even read what I posted? I never said that conservative commentators haven’t told their guests to “shut up” or called anyone Nazis or socialists. Did I say anything of the sort? No, I said that they do NOT call for their Liberal counterparts to stop giving opinion or stop righting articles… For you to deny that the left hasn’t almost unanimously called for Rush and Glenn to be STOPPED is the blindest denial I have heard in a long time. The fairness doctrine is a prime example of just such a method. The Leftist elite in this country would tear the constitution to shreds if they could. It only limits their power. That is why we call you Nazi’s and Socialists.

  33. Beck, Hannidy, and O’Reilly are not NEWSCASTERS. You leftist can never get it correct! Limit the falsehood claims to newscasters. Now links or absolute claims to lies by Fox “NEWSCASTERS”. . . and I don’t even like Fox.

A troll? I am just asking questions and you Dev to your tried and true lowest common denominator, name calling when you have no other argument. Stick to the facts.

Question is “Do you want to empower the government to lop off broadcast channels that you do not agree with”? If yes, remember the GOP will probably control the House, the Senate, SCOTUS, and the White House in 2013. It will be extreme right wing conservatives shutting down broadcast stations then and you will not be able to stop it because the precedent has been set. Better allow opinions not popular with you alone because your opinions are also on the chop block!

  34. No, you call us Nazis and socialists because you have no idea what the two mean and that is what they told you to call us on Rush and Fox. You’re just sheeple following along with what your corporate masters tell you. The left has no equivalent to rush – name a Democrat leader of the party who called for Bush to fail, said he wasn’t an American, called him a Nazi, etc. Oh, well, wait – Bush was according to scholars a dictator, so someone has called him that. watch out that you don’t trip over reality on your way to “decide”.

  35. Tell us all why Fox was smearing Joy Behar as a liberal news personality today, then? She is a comedian. Which one is it.

  36. HA! Any freedom loving American should want Obama to fail!!!! ALL of his policies have shaped up to be the downfall of American society. Every time he does anything its detrimental to our nation. When Bush took a stance on immigration reform, Medicaid part D and the patriot act I wanted him to fail too… oh and by the way I’ve read Karl Marx and Saul Alinsky. Don’t think for a second that I haven’t done my due diligence on what threatens my beloved country. When we say socialist and Nazis we know exactly what it means. Oh, and by the way your high school and college professors lied to you about the true meaning of what those ideologies were. “Wink wink” they are trying to do the same thing.

  37. Try this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rupert_murdoch
It confirms Murdoch to be Australian. It also confirms his support for the “Labor Party” in England which is very leftist. It would not surprise me if he routinely supports both sides in any election to cover his bases.

The $200 Million Dollar thing about Obama’s Asian trip was first reported in the Indian press. I doubt it will prove to be far from fact, probably low. He has shown the ability to burn money like it was oil. As far as the others on Fox, Shep Smith is somewhat liberal, Megyn Kelly somewhat conservative, Gretchen Carson who knows, Bill Hemmer conceals his, and the rest must be on mornings because I don’t know about them. These are the news anchors and account for most programming to report news.

Again the question is, “Would you support the action of the US government to shut Fox down because you do not like the right wing slant of newscast and opinion programming”? If yes, you have no understanding of “freedom of the press” and I have no respect for your opinion.

  38. Bring it on!!! You guys lost big in the last election and things are not looking good for you in 2012. The Tea Party has the ear of the American people. You had better hope our side is more tolerant than you appear to be. And for JTK, the woods is a nice place and I like going there, make my living there for your information. You should try it sometimes.

  39. JTK the debate here is, “Should the federal government use its police powers to shut down Fox and MS-NBC”? It seems Pres. Carter is willing to sacrifice MS-NBC to get Fox. What would be your position on that action? FYI, I would not support any effort to shut down any media outlet just because I do not agree with the political stand taken by the outlet. As much as I disagree with positions taken on MS-NBC, I would fight for the right of them to broadcast and say what they please. Are you that tolerant?

  40. What a condescending bigot! You need to get out more and widen your horizons. Some of us have our masters and some of us have IQ’s that approach 140. Some of us will stand in a battle of wits with any of you at any time.

  41. NAZI is the German algorithm for National Socialist Party. Look it up! So a NAZI is a socialist by definition. A socialist stands for government control of . . . everything. Where am I wrong? Problem is that you leftist do not want to be associated with Hitler. Too bad, he was a socialist, not one of us.

  42. I agree I wanted Bush to fail on Immigration Reform, Medicaid Part D, and the Patriot Act. Two of those passed and now we live with the fallout. Men, women, and children being groped in airports, and a bankrupt Medicaid program.

  43. I don’t think you have ever watched Beck or Hannidy or listened to them on the radio. All information presented as fact is first carefully vetted! You ought to listen some time.

  44. The phrase “eat fish and spit out the bones” should represent a mind set for those journalist’s and pundit’s with large audiences. To stir rabid influence from a national media stage for selfish financial profit should be reported heavily. Most Americans allot a small percentage of their time to listening to news’ sources. As news’ sources have been allowed to brand themselves as entertainment and escape responsibility “for the bones” the nation has suffered. The inability of the Congress to deliver non partisan legislation is a result of a deeply divided public often led by the “entertainment news”. I would support a wave of news broadcasting that would carefully examine, and then present, a documentary broadcast on each of the major players that shape the partisan picture the public embraces daily. We are drowning in opinion.

  45. Fox is an entertainment program. It’s not a news program that follows journalism codes. It should be compared to other entertainment programs.

  46. Lmack49 (read it to the end)-
“A good many paragraphs of the party program were obviously merely a demagogic appeal to the mood of the lower classes and were sympathetic to radical and even socialist slogans. Point 11, for example, demanded abolition of incomes unearned by work; Point 12, the nationalization of trusts; Point 13, the sharing with the state of profits from large industry; Point 14, the abolishing of land rents and speculation in land. Point 18 demanded the death penalty for traitors, usurers and profiteer, and Point 16, calling for the maintenance of a “sound middle class”, insisted on the communalization of department stores and their lease at cheap rates to samll traders. These demands had been put in at the insistence of Drexler and Feder, who apparently really believed in the “socialism” of National Socialism. They were the ideas which Hitler was to find embarrassing when the big industrialists and landlords began to pour money into the party coffers, and of course nothing was done about them.” pg 41 “The Rise and Fall of The Third Reich” by William Shirer.

Excellent book which I am rereading again after the resurgence of all these Nazis references in online dialogue. You should try reading something and getting facts before crowing about having a 140IQ while exposing your ignorance.

  47. JAK-
read above post. Clearly you have no understanding that the nazis were defininely NOT socialists. They were facists and the communists were the enemy of facists. Read a book. Get educated. By-the-way, using “The Diabolical Lie” to try and slur all teachers is pathetic, completely transparent, and quite frankly, stupid. Anyone who would be so guillable to buy into such an illogical generalization clearly can’t think very critically.

  48. Never said it was me. However socialism always dives to the lowest common denominator . . . money. The socialist always touts grand schemes to help the downtrodden and underclass but always get sidetracked by big international bankers and corporations and enriching them. The bottom line then becomes monopoly where confiscatory prices can be charged and lousy service granted. Witness the recent bank bailouts which were sold to us by progressives of both parties as necessary to preserve the middle and lower class. Bull, it was nothing more than an enrichment of wall street bankers. Also witness the lousy service provided by TSA where lack of competition allows them to do as they please. The government never gets it right.

OK you make the charge that I am ignorant and I will admit that I do not know everything. I have not read the book you quote. Being able to quote books however does not indicated proper understanding. If you like to read go back and read Animal Farm. Orwell puts things in prospective very well. The pigs always end up in the big house and revolution has to follow revolution . . . under socialism. In our representative republic we have our revolutions every 2 to 4-years . . . peacefully. I certainly like our system better.

  49. Ivanho you do not recall your history very well. The Russ were the allies of the Nazis and cooperated during the invasion of Poland. Hitler and the Nazis were not ridiculed by the left until he invaded the USSR though the Communist were persecuted in pre-war Germany (Hitler did not want the completion, you know do not leave a political enemy standing behind you). After the invasion betrayal the Communist have been the enemies of the Nazis even to this day. WWII then became a power struggle to see if Fascism (private ownership with total government control) or Communism (total government ownership and control) would be the socialist standard going forward. Even so, NAZI simply means National Socialist Party.

Hitler carried out the ideals of American Progressives and early on had the total support of those same progressives. They included people like Henry Ford and Margret Sanger. It was from the progressives that Hitler learned to purge society of unwanted and burdensome members thus the Holocaust! As stated in the book section quoted he was diverted from pure socialism to a tainted socialism that allowed private ownership of the means of production (Fascism) by the influence money, international banking, and greed. I do not like either form of Socialism.

  50. In a 2008 interview with Walt Mossberg, Murdoch was asked whether he had “anything to do with the New York Post’s endorsement of Barack Obama in the democratic primaries.” Without hesitating, Murdoch replied, “Yeah. He is a rock star. It’s fantastic. I love what he is saying about education. I don’t think he will win Florida… but he will win in Ohio and the election. I am anxious to meet him. I want to see if he will walk the walk.”

Deal with it nutjob! Oh wait, a verifiable fact that doesn’t agree with your slant so it must be a lie.

  51. Lmack49, you are the only one asking that question. It exists only in your comment. That is a straw man, so don’t bother. Nobody wants it, so don’t change the subject.

Lets see you admit that Murdoch donated 2 million or more to the GOP. Lets see you admit what the rest of the world knows: Rupert Murdoch is NOT left wing in any way. The brithis labour party is NOT ‘very leftist.’
Each time you make those crazy claims you look either like a troll or a completely uninformed ignoramus. I don’t believe you when you claim not to watch Fox. Why do you have such a strong opinion on whether they lie or not if you don’t even watch? Methinks I smell a troll! Could that be why?

As for their lies, here goes.

You no longer have an excuse for being so out of touch with reality.

  52. That explains your ignorance. Does it also explain why you can’t admit that Rupert Murdoch gave 2 million or more to the GOP?

Or is admitting the truth not something they do in the woods either?

  53. No, once again, that question exists only in your mind. You made it up. It is not in the article.

When you come back from fantasy land, bring me a snow globe.

  54. You should consult a dictionary before using words like ‘bigot.’ If you want to be part of political discussions, online or off, you should learn to admit when you are wrong. Lets see you admit that Rupert Murdoch is conservative, come on.. its not hard. You won’t feel any pain at all.

  55. The left has not unanimously called for Rush and Beck to be stopped. Cite your sources. Considering how outrageously wrong you have been shown to be and that you have yet to admit that you were wrong at all, its hard to have any respect for your demands for people respond to a position that nobody has taken.

You are being disingenuous. Feel free to look that word up.

  56. Once again you are outrageously wrong. Just because Socialist is in the name doesn’t make them left wing. Your ignorance is showing.

Do you still claim not to watch Fox news? I still think you are lying about that.

  57. Please read some history. Hitler was reviled by the left for years before WWII.

Show some integrity. Admit Murdoch is conservative, admit he donated to the GOP, admit Fox lies. Once you show that you can admit when you are wrong, you will have some ground to stand on when demanding that others admit they are wrong.

Oh, and stop lying about not watching Fox. Thanks!

  58. They have no idea what they’re talking about, sadly. Here they are, being led around the nose by American’s foremost socialist quitter governor and calling other people socialists. Too funny.

  59. You don’t have to admit you watch Fox; we can all tell because you are the only crazy person who is denying history/reality.

  60. Carefully vetted? Respectfully, are you insane?
    Vetting yourself doesnt count, sir!
How sad so many Americans choose to see lies as truth!

  61. “Fox is so fact-free, gut-intensive I’m surprised all the viewership doesn’t have ulcers”

And where is your justification for such a statement?
