What Has The Gay Community Ever Done To Rick Santorum?

When I see and hear Rick Santorum on the campaign trail, I can’t get past his rampant homophobia. I try. I try to hear the rest of his mostly nonsensical (as in makes no sense) right-wing political rhetoric, especially since I used to interview the guy when I was a talk show host years ago on WHP in Harrisburg, PA, but I always come back to his hatred of gays.

I can’t stand people who can’t stand people for no reason. And Santorum can’t stand gays. He never fully explains why. What possible harm could Bob marrying Bruce bring to Santorum or his family?  Before I can begin to take anything this guy says seriously, I have to have an answer to that question. From the miniscule gay population in this country I need to know one negative consequence the gay community has wrought in the personal life of Rick Santorum. ONE! That’s not asking too much.

He’s never cited a single example as far as I know. Was there an incident at some obscure rest stop? Did he wander into a gay bar by mistake and flee in horror? Did some aging queen make a suggestive remark?  Its OK Rick…get it off your chest. Surely Barney Frank didn’t drill a peephole in Santorum’s office bathroom when Rick was a congressman. Maybe a homosexual cast a lascivious glance at his pooch.  In Santorumville homosexuality is analogous to bestiality among other abhorrent practices and nosey Rick wants to park his cot in your bedroom so he can keep an eye on your constitutionally unprotected (so he claims) private sex practices.  Government in your bedroom?  Odd stance for an arch conservative.

When I was in my late teens, I worked for an American Health studios outlet on Hollywood Blvd. There were a number of gay members. Many were closeted actors; some names you would recognize even to this day. And yes, some of them asked me out to lunch or dinner or to a party…just like guys are always asking girls out. And just like the gals, who turn down most such requests, I respectfully declined all the invitations. And once it became clear that I wasn’t ‘available’ I interacted with the gay clientele the same way I interacted with the straight clientele because, believe it or not Mr. Santorum, as much as you obsess on gay sex, homosexuals have lives that include activities that aren’t sexual in nature.

I got along fine with every member, regardless of his sexual proclivities. We didn’t talk sex. We mostly talked about how tough it was for my clients to be gay and how many times these perfectly bright and decent men were threatened, intimidated and oft-times beaten. I don’t know if Santorum has ever beaten a gay person, but his verbal attacks have given those who so desire, permission to do so. Because when high-profile leaders legitimize hate, that’s the tacit signal to abuse the target of that leaders loathing in any fashion that suits clueless thugs, up to and including beatings and in the extreme, murder.

Santorum always insists he has no problem with homosexuals just homosexual acts.  Something like that consummate cop out of hate the sin, love the sinner or variations thereof. The latter attributed to the bible or Aesop or Gandhi’s autobiography – take your pick.

No, I couldn’t vote for Santorum even if I suddenly fell and hit my head and registered as a Republican. I don’t know what happened to him. As I remember, when we talked on my show at WHP, he was perfectly reasonable even when we disagreed.  Never once did he mention the gay issue.

I don’t know what happened to him.

  1. He’s just playing a role. He doesn’t even care look at his wife, living with an abortion doctor all tose years. Hypocrites!

  2. People like santorum are so convinced of their own reality of right and wrong that they are very dangerous.

I think that women are the next group to be targeted by him. He will ignore what wife’s past to determine what is appropriate for all women.
He is a hypocrite of the first degree.

  3. His behavior is that of a repressed homosexual, he has been denying his same sex feeling and therefore so should the rest of us.

  4. Santorum is JUST obsessed with gay sex. I’ll bet He dreams about it in so many deviant ways he’s actually obsessed with it & most likely masturbates to his own thoughts & fantasies.

  5. The good news is that this is his last hurrah. He entered this race damaged goods, and he’ll exit all the worse for wear. He’s proven he’s unelectable locally and, at season’s end, nationally. Even if he doesn’t acquiesce to the obvious and deigns to run again for something somewhere, sometime, he’ll never hold elective office again. The more he opens his mouth, the more he ensures that simple truth. (So, watch him be tapped for Health and Human Services Secretary in 20 years or so when the electorate’s memory fails and the next Republican presidential hopeful has an actual chance at winning office.)

  6. What have the gays ever done to Santorum? Well, simple.

    They exist.

That’s all it takes. Santorum is the champion of what’s right and moral and by simply existing the gays flaunt immorality in his face.

  7. Welcome Dennis

I think he got a dose of the fundamentalists. Lets recall who met in Texas and decided to support him over Perry, Romney and the Gingerbread man. Fundies and Dominionists. I think he suddenly got religion after being named one of the 15 most corrupt men in Congress. Just about the time it became fashionable to be an old testament freak.

But you make a good point. Is this a show? Is it real religion? Did he mistake being a conservative for being a rampant homophobic and no one told him to keep it under his hat? He certainly miscalculated the mood of the land

  8. Ahh…”Church Chat” is about to start…What’s that “Church Lady”? The gays are just flaunting and flinging their bulbous, naughty man parts in Rick Santorum’s face…well, isn’t that special??!

  9. Welcome Dennis to PoliticusUSA:-) You started off with a bang. Great article and we await Rick’s answer, though I fear Rick choses to live a life of bigotry and hatred, when he could very well choose a life of love and tolerance that would not be ruining the marriages of others. Love the sinner (Rick), hate the sin (bigotry).

  10. Santorum is so profoundly anti-gay that I would not be surprised if some years down the line he isn’t outed by a young male escort with whom he has paid to have a series of trists, much like Ted Haggard.

  11. To be fair we did make his name synonymous with the frothy mixture that results from bum sex… But he started it… :)

  12. I agree, but I’d put it a different order. 1)closeted and 2)religion. His religion gives him the perfect excuse and cover for being a homophobe. I think he, at some point in his very young life, recognized he had gay feelings, maybe even acted on them & knew those feelings were unacceptable in his world. Having such intense feelings denied to you (self-denied)can generate the kind of extreme hatred (jealousy) he feels toward those who can and do live the life he still wants. Trying to destroy their lives & cause them suffering, in his warped mind, is somehow getting revenge.

I may be completely wrong in this assessment, but it’s been proven in many studies that the most homophobic individuals are the ones who get most aroused when viewing gay porn.
