SCHULTZ: All the things brought up about e-mail and the way society changes, goods and services, I understand all that. Had the Republicans not have done this pre-funding of 75 years in a 10 year window they wouldn’t have near the financial problems they have right now, correct?

SEN. SANDERS: Absolutely. Here’s the point, Ed. That fund now has $44 billion. What the Inspector General of the Post Office has told us the other day, if the Post Office does not put another nickel in the fund, it accumulates 4% interest in 21 years that fund is fully funded, stronger than any similar fund in the United States. We should use that 5.5 billion in order to stabilize the Post Office today.

SCHULTZ: How are you going to get the private sector to help rural America? In the long run this is a real thorn in the side of American business, I think.

SEN. SANDERS: You’re absolutely right, Ed. This is what we’re talking about. 230,000 jobs being lost in the postal service in the middle of recession. The postal service is responsible for millions of other jobs, in the private sector, businesses who use the mail, have to use the mail, packages every day. We’re talking about losing 3700 post offices, many of them rural. we’re talking about if these guys get their way of slowing down mail delivery, so that instead of one day delivery, it may be two or three, instead of three it may be five, if you do that in my view, and the view of many experts, you’re talking about a death spiral the end of the postal service as we know it.

Sen. Sanders has it nailed. This is nothing more than another Republican move that is based on ideology. There is no reason to kill the Postal Service, just like there was no economic reason to kill Medicare. Republicans support doing both because their ideology tells them that privatization is better. Make no mistake about it. This attempt to kill the Post Office begins and ends with privatization.

The problem with privatization is that it doesn’t provide a better quality of service, and it costs the taxpayers more money both in the short and long run.

If the Postal Service was privatized, mail delivery would no longer be uniform across the country. Private companies would focus their services in the areas where they could make the most profit. Privatization would be a death sentence for that American institution known as the small town Post Office. Most importantly, Republicans can’t be allowed to kill off 230,000 jobs just as this economy is really beginning to grow.

Every Democrat in America should be talking about this issue right now, and hopefully Senators like Bernie Sanders and Sherrod Brown will lead the way.

  1. as always the people that get hurt is the ones that cannot afford to be hurt anymore why is it that the top 1% only think of taking away from the poor and making more in their pocket its shamefull

  2. And the idiots who fall for this crap ought to think it through. A middle man with the only concern being profit — how do they think that’s going to turn out?

  3. Why is Bernie Sanders the only one who gets it? We need a Congress full of senators like Bernie! As a retiree from the Postal Service, I know firsthand how vital that service is. There is no way privatization will ever provide an adequate, secure, efficient or cost effective delivery service. Who would forward your mail, hold your mail, watch out for certain things, like checks, that your personal carrier does now, etc? Be careful what you ask for, Republicans! Privatization will cost you many dollars just to mail a letter, a card or a bill, each!

  4. The postal service is required to pay its pension up front to the tune of 5 billion dollars. No other department is required to do that. If it didn’t have to do that it would be very profitable. Also the PO runs on money it generates only. Stamp sales, cost of sending packages

  5. I spoke with my mail carrier the other day. We are a very rural place in SE IN and he is a contract worker, not a regular employee. His ‘salary” was slashed by $3K last year but he still does his job. He needs a flexible one as he is a caretaker for his aged mom. He is also a staunch 60’s republican due to Roe vs. Wade, as almost my whole town is.
I asked him if he was going to vote GOP this year and he said yes. I told him he can kiss his job good bye if he does so and he was stunned. I then reiterated exactly what Mr. Sanders poke of above and the mail carrier was devastated. Now he has to choose between an abortion vote or his livelihood and making sure his already alive mom can stay at home.
Helluva choice, GOP, you cock sucking assholes. I am sorry I hurt the man, but he had to know exactly what would touch him most deeply before he made a huge mistake. I am not suggesting he will vote DEM but he may just stay home and not vote at all.

  6. This is just sad. I moved from a metropolitan area to a rural area this year…our post office already had lesser hours than the ones in “the city.” They close for lunch. They close before 5. They are also NOT open until noon on Saturday. I choose to send everything I have to mail via USPC…this service, as with trash collection and water, should NOT be privatized.

  7. There is a connection to ALEC in this. Both UPS and FedEX are active corporate members of that shadow government.

  8. It wouldn’t have hemorrhaged if the FASCIST GOP didn’t CAUSE it to hemorrhage. It was one of the MOST STABLE unions in the country before the fasicsts trashed it.

  9. I had the same moral dilemma, but the truth is, Biblically abortion IS NOT murder, and also, the GOP has NO concern…NONE AT ALL, for humans beings either before or after they’re born. NONE. No health care, no prenatal care, no education, no emergency care, NO JOBS, one of the GOP front runners wants kids to work instead of learn, the GOP party line supports job outsourcing to a communist regime with a deplorable One Child per Household policy, and so on and so on.

It wasn’t a moral dilemma anymore for me. It was simply a bunch of people waving the flag and carrying a crucifix but not TRULY interested in providing children with the things they needed to HAVE A LIFE. That’s not “pro-life”, that’s just “hate-children” and “hate-women”.

  10. Even worse than the lost of the Postal Service jobs will be most e-commerce sites, as UPS/FedEx is oftentimes far more expensive than USPS. My eBay sales would be destroyed, for sure. That’s way more jobs, and businesses, that will be destroyed.

  11. If we used our post offices imaginatively as a place to get not just information for things like Medicare and taxes, but even perhaps appointments with those who might help us with signing up and the like, it would assist Social Security and the IRS with less everyday calls so they can be more helpful for tough tax and retirement questions – Germany does this quite successfully.
