Obama Shows America That He Now Owns Boehner, Cantor, and The GOP

obama pushes payroll tax 1

President Obama’s statement today that he wants more than just a ten month payroll tax cut extension shows just how much the president owns John Boehner and the House Republicans.

The president said,

Over the past two years, our businesses have added over 3.7 million new jobs. Our manufacturers are hiring more new workers to make more new things here in America than at any time since the 1990s. So our economy is growing stronger. And the last thing we need, the last thing we can afford to do, is to go back to the same policies that got us in this mess in the first place. The last thing we need is for Washington to stand in the way of America’s comeback.

First and foremost, that means Washington shouldn’t hike taxes on working Americans right now. That’s the wrong thing to do. But that’s exactly what’s going to happen at the end of this month — in a couple of weeks — if Congress doesn’t do something about it. The payroll tax cut we put in place last year will expire. The typical American family will shell out nearly a thousand dollars more in taxes this year. You’ll lose about $40 out of every paycheck if Congress does not act.

And that can’t happen. Not now. And it doesn’t have to. Congress needs to extend that tax cut — along with vital insurance lifelines for folks who’ve lost their jobs during this recession — and they need to do it now, without drama and without delay. No ideological sideshows to gum up the works. No self-inflicted wounds. Just pass this middle-class tax cut. Pass the extension of unemployment insurance. Do it before it’s too late. And I will sign it right away. (Applause.)

Now, the good news is over the last couple of days, we’ve seen some hopeful signs in Congress that they realize that they’ve got to get this done and you’re starting to hear voices talk about how can we go ahead and make this happen in a timely way on behalf of the American people. That is good news. But as you guys know, you can’t take anything for granted here in Washington until my signature is actually on it.

So we’ve got to keep on making sure that the American people’s voices keep breaking through until this is absolutely, finally, completely done. Until you see me sign this thing, you’ve got to keep on speaking up. Until you see that photograph of me signing it at my desk — (laughter) — make sure it’s verified, certified. If it’s not on the White House website, it hasn’t happened. And I’m going to need to make sure that your voices are heard.

Yesterday, House Republicans agreed to extend the payroll tax cut by ten months with no strings attached, but they tried to keep the unemployment benefits separate. However as you can see in his remarks above, the president put the payroll tax cut and the unemployment benefits extensions back together.

This was a not so subtle way of telling the House Republicans, not good enough. You will give me everything I want or feel the wrath of the American people after you raise taxes on 160 million of them. After House Republicans bungled this should have been non-issue so badly in December, Obama owns them now. They can try to play games and save some face by negotiating on the unemployment benefits extension, but it certainly sounds like Obama isn’t negotiating. He is has adopted the position of do it or else, and in an election year, the or else could be very, very bad for teetering House Republicans.

The change in his tone and attitude when it comes to dealing with Speaker Boehner and his out of control caucus is noticeable. The House has a single digit approval rating. Boehner has been completely battered as Speaker. The economy is growing and so are Obama’s approval ratings. House Republicans are in no position to bargain here, and the president knows it.

The House is only going to be in session for about a hundred or so more days this year. The House leadership can’t handle another bloody payroll tax battle with Obama that they are destined to lose. President Obama holds all the cards, and lessons learned in 2011 are turning into total dominance of the House Republicans in 2012.

Boehner and Cantor have already offered Obama most of what he wanted, but now the president is ready to play his advantage and demand it all. The worm has turned. The relationship has changed, and Obama is in charge.

  1. With the republicans fighting against the birth control issue in health care for women and the payroll tax break for the middle class, they’re going to end up hanging themselves come November.

  2. It’s about time the President realized that the majority of people who elected him wanted him to come to Washington and kick butt, not make friends with the GOP.

  3. Man, I love KARMA !!

I hope the republicans take a bath this November…

    They sure need it !!

  4. Hell yeah Obama! This is the man I voted for in 08! And will again this year! The Gas and Oil Party is diggin their own grave with our livelyhood!

  5. Oh, Mr. Easley, that it could be that we, as a nation, pull together
~ E Pluribus Unum ~. I adore that idea. “Imagine”, thank you, Mr. Lennon.

But, realistically, I fully expect the 2012 Randian RepubliCristians to mine new depths of ignorance, fear, and hatred in their continuing Fox-Murdoch-Ailes-Koch… soap-opera reality meantality (mean it).

    Unless,

    We. Stand. Up.

He can’t do it alone, people, we’re in this together.

  6. Did all of you who wanted him to start off like a pitbull not think he knew what he was doing? I have watched this brilliant man school these cretins from the beginning, starting after the “You Lie” incident. He started schooling them on how to govern at the first roundtable meeting when he whipped their asses and has been doing it in his own way, all along. He does not jump to the bark of the left or the right..He is President Barack Obama, He is a bad-ass with a brain he is doing it calmly, steadily and completely. 7. How about cutting the waste in government and reduce their salaries, benefits, health insurance, etc.?! Now there’s an idea. Hmmm?

  8. Why? Does that pay off the debt or do they contribute to paying off the debt?

Answer is B, they contribute. WHy dont you volunteer to work for nothing?

  9. And let’s not forget the State Governors & Legislatures – – increasingly, they have the power to impose insanely punitive RW ideology & bigotry in a devious manner which hurts American voters (drug testing welfare recipients, passing ALEC’s anti-PPACA health reform & photo ID voter suppression bills, waging war on women’s reproductive health rights, unions, workers & minorities).

We need to replace EVERY GOP Governor that came to power in 2010. They all suck, they’re all corrupt.

  10. This is the closest we’ve had the R party to “demolished” in my lifetime. And I ain’t no spring chicken! I say go all the way! I don’t mind a two party system, but it’s necessary to have two parties with common sense and common purpose, and the R party is no longer part of that process. They need to disband completely, and reform on completely new principles, which do NOT include gutting the middle class and poor, or enabling the wealthy to get wealthier at our expense.

  11. He is not trying to make friends with the Repubs, he is running the coutnry. He is intelligent enough to know, a effective leader has to compromise sometimes, with the opposing party, to get things done. He is intelligent enough to know you can’t be a great leader and run the country to the extreme, left of right.

  12. Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury we thank you for your time. The Republicans and their leadership have been found guilty by a jury of their peers (The AMERICAN People)! They have ben found guilty of fearmongering (weapons of mass destruction), lies (he’s a communist), distortions (he wasnt born in America), racial (the Food Stamp President)and religous extremisim (Hes attacking catholics and hes Muslim). They were found guilty of pandering to rich special interests (Koch Brothers), creating failed economies (recession), bringing women backward in time (attacks on abortion and womens rights). And they ask for more time (You’re Fired). we the people (Poor) have had it up to our eyes with Trickle Down Economics. We the People (Yes dummies US) demand truth and honor. We demand that you who work for us WORK FOR US. That is why you are being sentenced to the pits you have created for us. We revoke your salarys for life. We remove your Cadillac health plans for what you want us to accept. There is no chance for parole. Its now time to face your hangman (OBAMA 2012) its time to meet your grim Reaper (OBAMA a president that cares for us). We therefor sentence you to life. The life you have created for us (the People of America). We hope you like it. We THE PEOPLE have chosen and we chose to follow the office that had returned to integrity (OBAMA) that Cares about the People (OBAMA), we have chosen and stand to fight with him (OBAMA) because he is part of WE THE PEOPLE (OBAMA), and we shall not cower like people under the stairs. WE STAND as WE THE PEOPLE. And if you didnt know now you know OBAMA is OUR Leader!

Yes, how ABOUT cutting waste, fraud and abuse. This ought to fit that bill! This is what good governance looks like.Protecting the taxpayers from abuses like this and insuring their money is well spent, and taking a hard line against those that would steal from the taxpayers. This administration has done far more to go after this fraud than any other.BILLIONS reclaimed, and that is nothing to sneeze at.Here’s a good idea. Hmmm?

  14. Just a little preview of what the article talks about.

WASHINGTON – Investigators recovered a record-breaking $4.1 billion in health care fraud money during 2011, a reflection of the Obama administration’s increased focus on fighting fraud, Justice Department officials announced Tuesday.

Between 2009 and 2011, the federal government has collected $7.20 for every dollar spent on fighting fraud, according to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) inspector general. That’s a jump from the $5.10 for every dollar spent between 1997 and 2008, records show.

  15. If social security is in trouble as claimed, then payroll tax cuts are foolish.

And if the general budget deficit is the problem, then income tax cuts are foolish.

  16. This is why the GOP hates intellectuals. The Prez has been handing them rope for a long time – with election season on us, they are now hanging themselves in public.

Moral of the story: Don’t screw with the smartest guy in the room.

P.S. Notice I just established a moral tale without a gawd in it?

  17. I have to agree with you. In the past I have been upset that what appeared to be Obama caving in to the right. But the more I read here and other places the more it’s obvious he was doing exactly what you say. He made a noose at the end of the rope and kept handing it out to them. And now I think he is Reeling them in

  18. Desertflower,

I think you mean 72 cents on the dollar, not $7.20. That would be awesome! (Unless the figures are taking into account fines, which I highly doubt.)

Still, recovering 3/4 of the waste is awesome!!!!!

  19. It’s called giving them enough rope to hang themselves, and it couldn’t happen to a more deserving group of knuckleheads. They are reaping what they have been sowing for years, and I can’t wait until Karma really hits them full force when they get voted out of office.
