Fox News Freaks Out and Claims Obama Has Declared War on Marriage

It took no time for rapid response right wing propaganda gang over at Fox News to turn up the fear and claim that Obama’s support for same sex marriage is a declaration of war on marriage.

Here is the headline over at Fox Nation courtesy of Media Matters:

You can expect to hear this same war on marriage hysteria repeated by the right in the days, weeks, months, years, decades, and centuries to come. This is going to be their line of attack. They think that it is still 2004 and same sex marriage is a potent culture war issue that will carry them to victory. Same sex marriage is a wedge issue, but not in the way the right thinks it is. Recent polling by Pew has found that first time ever more Americans support same sex marriage than oppose it. The wedge on the issue is by age. A majority of Millennials and Generation Xers support same sex marriage. The older a person is the more likely they are to oppose same sex marriage.

Younger people are driving the shift in favor of same sex marriage. These same younger people are key component of President Obama’s support, and they also are not the back bone of the Fox News audience. In essence, when Fox News and the right try to revive the culture war and use gay marriage as political wedge, they are only hurting themselves and their party.

The depth of the political pit that Republicans have put themselves in on this issue can be best seen in the reaction of the Log Cabin Republicans to Obama’s statement,

That the president has chosen today, when LGBT Americans are mourning the passage of Amendment One, to finally speak up for marriage equality is offensive and callous,” said R. Clarke Cooper, Log Cabin Republicans Executive Director. “Log Cabin Republicans appreciate that President Obama has finally come in line with leaders like Vice President Dick Cheney on this issue, but LGBT Americans are right to be angry that this calculated announcement comes too late to be of any use to the people of North Carolina, or any of the other states that have addressed this issue on his watch. This administration has manipulated LGBT families for political gain as much as anybody, and after his campaign’s ridiculous contortions to deny support for marriage equality this week he does not deserve praise for an announcement that comes a day late and a dollar short.

The Log Cabin Republicans are bashing Obama and calling the president’s statement a political calculation, but they are supporting a nominee, and are members of a party that is opposed to same sex marriage. They are bashing Obama for supporting what they want, strictly because the endorsement didn’t and never would come from a Republican president. This is what is called putting partisan politics ahead of the common good.

While the Log Cabin Republicans try to straddle an impossible line, Fox News is playing to their 65 year old base. The war on marriage will be Fox’s new cause du jour. They will climb the walls and pound the tables, and emphatically state that marriage must be defended.

What they don’t realize is that the Obama and the Democrats wouldn’t have it any other way.

To far right that has hijacked the Republican Party, same sex marriage is drug that can’t be resisted. They will plunge into this debate with venom and ferocity. They will let it overwhelm all other issues, and they will lose in November.

It is amazing that the Republicans don’t understand this, but the left and Democrats have learned how to use their culture war against them. Most Americans aren’t supporting the Republican Party’s positions on issues like taxation, Social Security and Medicare, and same sex marriage anymore. Anytime Democrats can get Republicans to focus on the issues that they disagree with majority of Americans about it is a big win.

So freak out Fox News, fill up your airtime with the “war on marriage,” and by doing so help President Obama and the Democrats win the November election.

The Republican inability to resist the “war on marriage” is helping to make their formerly big tent even smaller.

  1. Man the Log Cabin Republicans crazy rationalizations make the head spin. Lemme get this straight….The President and the Dems ARE in support of gay marriage, but because of a timing issue, you’re gonna vote for and support the party that has a base that reviles you, and is OPPOSED to gay marriage. Oooookaaaay. Biting your nose off to spite your face is an understatement when it comes to the Log cabin folks.

  2. The tide has been shifting steadily as antiquated homophobia and hate become passe and increasingly offensive. We created America with our eye on individual freedom and kept religion from having any direct influence or contol in government. we belatedly ended slavery, we acknowledged the former slaves as a whole person and not just a less than human 3/5th person, MEN finally gave women the right to vote, we ended poll taxes, we passed civil rights laws and one day soon, within a generation perhaps gays and lesbians will be treated like whole people with equal rights. On that day a future generation will look back as we have and say, “we can’t believe it took this long!”

  3. And I say let the revolution begin! Conservatism is a blight and conservatives feel the need to have someone to look down upon to feel better about the fact that they are such SMALL-minded haters. Whether it be blacks, hispanics, women, gays or just plain old equal rights loving liberals they need a target and we are firing back.

  4. I believe that what most people want is an equal playing field.
Let gender, race, creed be way down on the list. Equal human rights be at the top.

First and foremost, we are all human.

  5. and on top of it all, it really doesn’t matter what everyone thinks. The Constitution gives us right to search for happiness. People have the right to marry the person that they want to marry.

The sanctity of marriage is not about who is in it, it’s about how the two individuals within it deal with it.

I hope that the conservatives go crazy over this because the more they bring it up the more people are going to notice it, and the more people are going to approve of it. Because the conservatives will make such a horrifying mess out of it that people will turn away from them. I can’t wait to see what Brian Fisher and the complete idiot’s at NOM have to say, and what they have to say when they realize how little power they bear

  6. About time! I am glad he did this, and let the rabid right threaten their ‘armed revolutions’ and whatever. It is the GOP at war with marriage. Do these guys think when they ban contraception that their pretty little white wives are going to keep having sex with them and risking a pregnancy every month? Most of their wives I’d bet have paying jobs…let them get pregnant 4 times in five years and be forced to quit their jobs, and see how they all like living on less. At that point, maybe we can have a sane discussion about taxes. Or maybe not. I’m still trying to figure out why people loving each other is so horrible. If the GOP tried a bit more love and a lot less hate, we might find our way back to the center.

  7. The Christian Nation has been spouting off about gay marriage being war for months now…everything they can’t tolerate is “war” or “persecution” upon their souls, when all along, it’s not hurting them or their eenie-weennie-pee-pees one teenie-tiny bit bit! You’d think they were being forced into sex slavery, tied up and whipped by secular “soldiers”, tempted by salacious harlots right outside their church doors, falling endlessly into the depths of sexual perversions…how do they wake up everyday and live with this kind of paranoia of gay zombies coming to get them, steal their bodies condemning them to hell…whatever…

  8. Fox news is upset about equality for all people! Amazing. Is that a reflection of Rupert Murdoch’s attack on civility? or privacy? or decency?

  9. Yes, go ahead and celebrate yet another heathen move off the left cliff, libtards!

Them gays already have civil unions and all the rights everyone else does. Why keep pushing for more and more? Why are they so needy they have to be placed above others and their ‘rights’ supersedes all others?

And for the love of God and all things holy, why does the gay crowd have to make their life style everyone’s business? Just keep that crap in the closet where I don’t have to see it or acknowledge its existence. My need to not have to accept your kind and all your (UN)fabulous business should absolutely supercede your vulgar desires because I’m with the normal people.

It doesn’t matter how anyone tries to slice this, or how many liberals try to sell this as progress, anyone with a grasp on reality understands this is Obama’s open war on the sanctity of marriage.

  10. Heh. Nothing like a gay rights issue to make the mean, ignorant, and scared ball up their little fists and stomp their feet!

  11. And the press will keep asking Romney about gay marriage, and he will continually keep dodging it, which will only erode his support. And people will continue to put Mormonism, Gay Marriage, and Romney together in sentences on blogs, talk shows, and everywhere else.

The debates are gonna some fun, ain’t they? :-)

  12. You are correct sir! As long as no one is physically harmed, let ’em go completely ape shit! I wanna see all the nut jobs out in force. This will have the effect of turning more and more people completely against them.

  13. Oh god, what show diod “You are correct sir! ” come from? I know its Ed M that says that to Johnny but what comedy show?

  14. There’s no excuse for the LOGS. They’re greedy brainwashed idiots. Such a shame but the world is full of them.

  15. Con Heart said,

“Just keep that crap in the closet…”

Sounds like something “Moe” (3 Stooges) would say to Joe who would then turn to Moe and say, “Eewwww, you’re so push’shee” and throw a girl punch at him.

  16. i don’t know…. “Log Cabin Republicans” seems kinda GAY to me… maybe they’re jealous. or the Log Cabin has a HUGE CLOSET !

  17. How much can you possibly hate yourself to be a member of the party that thinks you’re an abomination? That makes no sense.

  18. I feel the legislation against same-sex marriage is just separate but equal all over again, but this time the separate group is homosexuals. We are all equal under the law and we should all have the same rights and benefits. Civil rights should never be up for a vote.

  19. I remember it from Johnny Carson, but yeah, it seems to ring a bell that it comes from somewhere else as well. Hmmmmmm.

  20. I hope the whatever the Log Cabin Republicans bit off to spite their whatever goes down better with Log Cabin Syrup.

  21. It’s even better than that. In the last 35 years, American Indians finally gained freedom of religion under the law, in the last hundred years, we finally gained the right to be citizens, and in the last 100 years, the Trail of Tears unofficially ended (the law was stricken from the books in the 80s). In my generation and the ones following, being American Indian is no longer being taught as a source of shame and embarrassment and something to be hidden or rejected. Our youth (in most areas but still not all) are actually being taught to have pride in their heritage.

There HAS been progress in this country, but they see it as a bad thing.

  22. The LOGS will vote democrat. President Obama has all the minorities period. Oops! What’s left –the white minority.
Two hurdles left Voter ID and cheating at voter’s box.

Humor of the day “Obama backs gay marriage. Romney backs
1940’s meaning of gay.” Albert Brooks. SHCCCC

  23. Heartless, keep it comming …
Humor of the day … “Congratulations Obama you’re now peronnally responsible for the biggest influx of marriage jokes since 1986. Was it worth it?” Morgan Murphy
