In 1994 Romney Praised His Mom For Championing Abortion Rights Before Roe v Wade

In the LGBT newspaper called the “Bay Windows” there was a story about Mitt Romney and how he will be better for gay rights than Ted Kennedy.

“In an interview with Bay Windows Aug. 18 (1994) , Romney said one reason why he is a better candidate for Senate than opponent Sen. Edward Kennedy is because his voice would carry more weight on lesbian and gay issues than Kennedy’s.”

Sure, because he was going into a Republican controlled Senate. But he knew that gay rights is not something the 1994 Republicans were interested in.

Here is a question Bay windows asked that I find interesting.

“Why should the gay community support your campaign when Ted Kennedy has been a strong supporter of civil rights issues and the gay community?”

“Well, I think you’re partially right in characterizing Ted Kennedy as supportive of the gay community, and I respect the work and the efforts he’s made on behalf of the gay community and for civil rights more generally, and I would continue that fight…. I think the gay community needs more support from the Republican party and I would be a voice in the Republican party to foster anti-discrimination efforts.”

Now in 2012, Romney is pushing for a federal ban on gay marriage, and has swung strongly to the right on this issue, stripping away the support he gave to the gay community in 1994.

Included in the in the interview, Romney reveals his mother was running for U.S. Senate well before Roe V. Wade. She was championing the legalization of abortion before it was legal. “My mom was a U.S. Senate candidate in 1970, before Roe v. Wade. My church feels that abortion is not a good choice. However, my mother advocated for the legalization of abortion,”Romney said.

When Mitt Romney was running for Senate in Massachusetts, he was progressive. When he was running against tea partiers like Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum, well he was severely conservative.

What will tomorrow bring? My guess is what ever you want him to be, just shake the etch- a – sketch and draw him to your likeness.
