Job Killing For Dummies: Why the GOP is to Blame For the Lack of Jobs

It is not unusual during elections for candidates to cast aspersion on their rivals to portray them as unworthy of support, and Republicans have spent considerable time blaming President Obama for sluggish job growth. In fact, the GOP, and particularly Willard Romney, has assailed the President for not creating jobs they claim is only possible if the wealthy receive more tax cuts and the government goes on a deregulation frenzy. The GOP agenda has never changed in over thirty years, and despite the abject failure of their grand scheme to enrich “job creators” and their corporations, they persist in attempting to convince Americans that the policies that have failed time and time again are the only remedy to save the economy and spur full employment. Romney, in particular, assails the President for being “anti-business, anti-investment, and anti-job policies,” but as usual, Romney lies.

It is important to remember that on Inauguration Day, a group of Republican leaders gathered to map out their plan to obstruct every one of the President’s economic plans and they certainly followed through on their promises. Since the President has been in office, Republicans voted against the stimulus that created over 3 million jobs, infrastructure improvements, breaks for small businesses that hire new employees, all of the jobs bills, and any program to spur economic growth. Republicans, and Romney, claim that if the President had concentrated on job creation instead of the landmark healthcare reform bill, the economy would be in better shape than it is and Americans would be back to work. However, their obstructionist tactics have subverted any attempts to create jobs so their argument falls flat.

Yesterday the President pointed out that the private sector created 4.3 million jobs in the past 27 months, but highlighted there are problems with state and local governments that have suffered cuts from austerity measures that resulted in the public sector losing over 600,000 jobs. The President’s stimulus package helped create and save millions of jobs as states received much needed federal relief, and if Republicans in Congress spent money for the public sector like they did during George W. Bush’s administration, the unemployment rate would fall to 7.3% immediately. Remember too, that when Speaker John Boehner was informed that Republican budget cuts would eliminate 1.1 million jobs, he said “so be it.” If the public sector added back the nearly million jobs lost to austerity measures, those workers would increase their spending that would create more private sector jobs and the unemployment numbers would drop significantly.

The Republican assertion that giving so-called job creators tax cuts creates jobs has been tested since Bush was president, and after they held unemployment benefit extensions and payroll tax cuts hostage for a two-year extension of Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthy, jobs never materialized disproving their claim that tax-cuts create jobs. What creates jobs, according to business owners across the country, is not lower taxes or deregulation, but putting money into the economy as evidenced by the President’s stimulus package. In fact, what Republicans are loath to mention is that the stimulus contained $275 billion in tax cuts for the middle class that they promptly spent boosting the economy and creating more jobs. Every Republican voted against the stimulus package that created over 3.1 million jobs making their “jobs a high priority” meme as false as their campaign pledge leading up to the 2010 midterm elections. It is part of the historical record that for the past year-and-a-half, Republicans have spent all their time creating religious edicts against women, same-sex marriage, and contraception instead of focusing on “jobs, jobs, jobs” they campaigned on with religious fervor.

If there is any blame for killing jobs in the past three years, it falls on Republicans in Congress and states who have worked tirelessly to slash social safety nets and shrink the government. By a large margin, Republicans voted against the Detroit auto industry bailout that saved hundreds-of-thousands of jobs and created 170,000 new ones, and yet they voted to give Wall Street $700 billion to rescue the people who decimated the world’s economy and killed millions of American’s jobs. Still, Republicans and Romney are parroting the canard that President Obama’s policies are retarding job creation and restricting job creators from investing in America and it is time for the President to cease the niceties and place the blame where it belongs; on Republicans.

President Obama has taken the high road throughout his tenure with attempts at bipartisanship that voters said they expect from their representatives, but Republicans have conceded nothing for the past three years. Instead, they have blocked legislation to stimulate the economy and create jobs while complaining the wealthy need more tax breaks to invest in America. Taxes are their lowest rates in 60 years, government spending is at its lowest level since before Reagan was president, and still, Republicans want more for the wealthy and smaller government. Their policies have sent more Americans below the poverty line than any developed country except for Romania, and their Draconian spending cuts and budgets portend more job losses that will drive the economy into a deep recession. It is time for the President to talk to the American people and educate them why job growth is sluggish and exactly who is responsible.

The government cannot create full employment on its own, but it can boost employment in the public sector by investing in education, infrastructure, and small businesses that Republicans are intent on obstructing, and the public needs to understand the damage Republican cuts to government spending has on jobs and the economy. Republicans and their Mormon candidate for president have broadcast their intention to shrink government, give $10.7 trillion in tax cuts to the wealthy, privatize Medicare and Veterans benefits, and the results will be a country of unemployed peasants while the wealthy wallow in luxury. That is the message President Obama and Democrats must relate to the American people and with facts and data to back up their message, only fools, racists, religious fanatics, and hardline conservatives will support the destructive agenda Republicans are promoting as America’s salvation.

The President has tried bipartisanship, negotiation, and concessions to move the country forward, and Republicans have not budged on their Draconian, government destroying agenda and, indeed, have ratcheted up their push to finish what Bush-Republicans started with deregulation, two unfunded and unnecessary wars, and more tax cuts for the rich. Willard Romney has broadcast his intention of going farther with Bush-era policies that sent the country on a course of destruction and it is astounding that one American would vote for revisiting the most disastrous administration in our history, but there is no accounting for racists, religious fanatics, and ridiculously stupid Americans who will go to the polls in November and vote for their own, and this country’s demise. Now, it is up to President Obama to tell the American people what semi-intelligent Americans with a memory already understand; high unemployment, the sluggish economy, and threat of war are entirely the fault of Republicans.

  1. GOP are on the whole committing treason! They're on the wrong side of history.
The shame is that by the time the media reports the facts to the public it will by years!
The FCC is part of the problem because they do not protect the public airwaves from mis-information. 80% of our airwaves are poluted with right wing rhetoric! Fox news is a major factor in the mis-information business as is other corporate outlets.
Thanks to blogs like this one, we can get the truth out to social media! the major news outlets like ABC don't want to hear from us. They have an agenda & it doesn't involve helping the public!

  2. The destructive policies pushed by the GOP have been eating away at our democracy and capitalism for decades.  The best book I've seen about this is "Winner Take All Politics" by Hacker/Pierson.  We have allowed the GOP to slowly and methodically erode so much of American democracy.  We are now on the edge of the cliff to Plutocracy. Let's just hope enough of us wake up and vote the GOP out in November.
It should be all hands on deck to not only get Obama re elected, warts and all; but also, a Dem based Congress in both houses.

  3. Did it ever occur to our pundits to question what this really means? It means that the global economy, where jobs are outsourced to wherever wages are lowest, is demanding that we rid ourselves of our local governance.

The bizarre paranoia of the tea party class has long been that the UN is taking over: instead it is the GOP blazing a trail for world wide corporate and financial interests to take us over.

  4. They have been committing treason out right since the 2000 election.
It was nothing more than  a coup.

  5. I get emails daily saying this very thing. Obama is giving our water rights to the UN, Obama is ging the land rights to the UN, Obama is giving our ocean rights top thew UN etc etc etc.

“Take a good look at the map to the right. It was published by the United Nations as their desired plan for restricting land use in the United States.
Is your house located in a red area? Plan on moving if Agenda 21 is ratified by the Senate. Those areas, according to the UN, will have “little to NO human use.”
Even if you house is in a yellow area, the UN says use will be “highly regulated”….in other words sparsely populated.
Apparently, the UN Agenda 21 seeks to drive us all into multi-family high rise super complexes in order to “save the environment.”
The Obama Administration is attempting to force the United Nation’s deadly Agenda 21 policies down American throats. If ratified this treaty will give the United Nations control of everything from our fishing rights, the food we eat and even where we will be allowed to live.
I have to be honest with you.
This is the most disturbing email I have ever written. I am frightened for our country. I am frightened for its freedom-loving citizens. But most of all, I am frightened for the future of America. Obama supports beating up the U.S. Constitution and we must not let it be replaced by United Nations Agenda 21.
The UN is ruthlessly advancing a new plan that will make America a HOSTAGE to the United Nations. While Obama and the liberal media ignore gas prices streaking to $5/gal. and England is already paying $10/gal.

Every email they send sdays this is the most disturbing email they have ever written. BTW, I paid 3.05 for gas yesterday, down from 3.85. Are they blaming Obama?

  6. I've come to the realization that they don't want to share this planet with anyone else.  No consideration for anyone not like themselves… that's why they're exporting American culture on top of everything else, and trying to force us to be like them in this country.  Probably the attempts to start WWIII with Muslims is because they know Muslims won't convert and won't accept their form of religion.
So, No UN.  America takes over the world, and anyone not American Christian is at best a third-class citizen (mainstream American Christians MIGHT be accepted as second-class citizens, but more likely the rank and file dominionists will fit that description and only the elites will be first class citizens).
In other words, rather an image of what Hitler wanted.
That would also explain their attitude towards nature.  If it's not profitable, it doesn't belong.

  7. IMHO the Plutocratic Cabal is using their vast reserves of wealth to suppress the BILL OF RIGHTS for the American public. Please wake up to this realization that this Cabal is not driven by fascist ideology – all members of the Plutocratic Cabal LOVE the American Constitution as a STRICT Constructionist document. In summary they aspire to make America a TRUE REPUBLIC reflective of Plato's Republic where those with power and wealth govern. Their vision does not include of any form of democracy, not even  a psuedo-democracy that can be used to keep the lower classes bound to the erronous idea that they have power through the ballot box.
This entire subject is too complex to address in a single comment, but I will make few observations. The ideology driving the American Plutocratic Cabal is home grown and as American as apple pie. Its members all share variations of the basic American Libertarian ideology, the primary goal of which is to eliminate the federal government. All that is necessary is to just open one's ears and listen to what the leaders of the Plutocratic Cabal are actually saying. You will find the same arguments, logic, political goals, and ideological statements being spoken by the Koch Brothers, Langone, etc.  One additional thing that you will note is that they don't sound anything like Dick Armey and other spokespeole for the Tea Party.
Another thing that we must realize is that wealth is the most precioous possession of the billionaire. Contrary to public opinion billionaires do not throw money around because they have so much of it. The richer they are the more thrifty they become. So if they spend money it is for something that they would almost die for. I say this to clarify the respective fanatical zeal that these super rich plutocrats are obsessed with to be spending millions of dollars to twist and distort the current political processes in their favor. These men are serious in their ambition, deadly serious. Therefore it is a mistake for progressives and people who love the BILL of RIGHTS and people who need the support of the Federal government to dismiss the effort of the Plutocratic Cabal as a political joke or a bunch of "nut cases".
If the Cabal members are successful in November, they will orchestrate an unimagineable level of deprivation and suffering on lower call Americans, especially people who depend on the Federal government to provide their daily living expenses. These people will suffer and die. Also it is the plan of the Plutocratic Cabal to recruit more American youth to enter the raified air of wealth and power positions as their goal is to dramatically expand the ranks of the American Plutocracy. They have mastered the propaganda techniques for mass mind control , so currently they feel comfortable executing their vision of a future America.

  8. Yes, GOP is purely Libertarian, Ayn Rand ideology and little else. However, expanding the ranks of the wealthy elite is not their goal; concentrating power and control at the top of existing oligarchy is their primary objective. Eliminating everyone else is necessary to complete their coup, and they are well on their way to acheiving it.

  9. It's called freedom of speech.  If liberals could produce defensble logic instead of emotion then maybe they would have enough listeners to attract advertisers.  Yet time and time again the liberals can't.  So what are you going to do about it.  You are going to use the federal govenment "FCC this time" to silence something you don't agree with.  What if the republicans started pushing the FCC to shut down sites like this because they didn't agree?   You talk about freedom and equality only when it suits you .  Ahh, the conundrum of being a lib in America.

  10. Bill, the percentges are out of whack because your buddy, Reagan, got rid of the fairness doctrine.  If that were back in force, Fox and CNN would not be able operate their news and cable talk shows.  At least the dems do have aternative views from repigs, but they are so easy to turn into lying baffoons.  That's why they only go on Fox.  Fox licks their boots, knows no facts to rebute false claims with.  The only NBC show they go on is 'Meet the Press', but David Gregory is as much of a RW hack as tim Russert was.  Actually, he's worse, if you can believe that.  I knew you could.

  11. And the corporations are already buying the water rights in eastern Colorado for gas fracking.  The UN does not violate the sovereignty of countries, nor do they have any teeth to do it.  Repigs do, though.
