Romney Says Porn Crackdowns Not Tax Returns are His Top Priority

Last updated on July 21st, 2012 at 10:47 am

Mitt Romney has a bit of a disclosure problem. While he refuses to release his tax returns, the Republican nominee has been privately promising right wing culture warriors he will crackdown on pornography.

The radical right wing group Morality in Media blew the lid off of Romney’s secret promise to them by blabbing it to The Daily Caller,

Trueman, the president of Morality in Media, contacted the Romney campaign earlier this year about the “untreated pandemic” of Internet pornography. “They got back to us right away,” he said.

Bob Flores, another former Justice Department official who prosecuted pornographers, accompanied Trueman to an hour-long meeting with Romney foreign and legal policy director Alex Wong, Trueman said.

“Wong assured us that Romney is very concerned with this, and that if he’s elected these laws will be enforced,” Trueman told TheDC. “They promised to vigorously enforce federal adult obscenity laws.”

Trueman said he would like for Romney to speak publicly about cracking down on porn, but believes Romney avoids the subject because he “saw that Rick Santorum got beat up in the mainstream press for being so forthright.”

If there is one consistency in Mitt Romney’s behavior, it is a total aversion to public disclosure. Romney is a candidate who likes to operate in secret. Much like the Bush/Cheney administration he treats the American people like they are on a need to know basis, and Mitt decides what you need to know.

The problem is that Mitt Romney has decided that cracking down on adult entertainment is more of a priority that being completely honest with voters about what is in his tax returns, or what exactly he was doing at Bain. Initially Romney was compared to John Kerry, but his secretive behavior and his deep admiration for Dick Cheney make Richard Nixon a better comparison.

You may remember the Morality in Media crusaders as the same group that got most of the Republican presidential field to promise to criminalize what people decide to watch in the privacy of their own homes. Before the Morality in Media folks get too carried away, they should remind themselves of who they are dealing with. A promise from Mitt Romney is as legitimate as a three dollar bill.

Romney is a candidate who will say anything to any group in order to get their vote, but his true intentions are revealed by the fact that he has taken campaign cash from an adult filmmaker.

Mitt Romney is the candidate who believes it is more important to peep into your bedroom and tell you what you can watch than to be open and honest with voters about where and how he made his money.

Bad Boys whatcha’ gonna’ do when Romney’s porn police come for you?
