A Paranoid Romney Accuses Obama of Making Voters Jealous of Him

In a bit of unhinged paranoia, Mitt Romney claimed that Obama is making voters jealous of him and his wealth.

Here is the video from CBS News:

Romney was asked about how this campaign is about hatred, and he answered,

If you look at the ads that have been described and the divisiveness based upon income, age, ethnicity and so forth, it’s designed to bring a sense of enmity and jealousy and anger and this is not, in my view, what the America people want to see. I know what I’m running for. I’m running to get American working again, to get good jobs for people with more take home pay. And the President seems to be running just to hang on to power. I think he’ll do anything in his power to try and get reelected. I want to get this country going again. That’s what brought me to the race and hopefully we can have a debate about issues and our differences on issues and contrast in that area. But these personal attacks, I think, are demeaning to the office of the White House and the comments yesterday by the Vice President, I think, just diminish the White House that much more…. I think the comments of this nature sink the White House just a little lower. The American people expect something better from the President than these kind of divisive comments.

Romney used one word in that answer that stands out. Romney accused Obama of making the American people jealous. Who are voters being made jealous of? Why, they are jealous of Mitt Romney. For those who have followed the Romney campaign, this should all sound familiar.

In an interview with Matt Lauer after the South Carolina Republican primary, Romney claimed that anyone who talks about distribution of wealth, wealth and power, or Wall Street is envious of him and his fellow one percenters.

Here is the video:

Transcript:

LAUER: When you said that we already have a leader who divides us with the bitter politics of envy, I’m curious about the word envy. Did you suggest that anyone who questions the policies and practices of Wall Street and financial institutions, anyone who has questions about the distribution of wealth and power in this country, is envious? Is it about jealousy, or fairness?

ROMNEY: You know, I think it’s about envy. I think it’s about class warfare. When you have a president encouraging the idea of dividing America based on 99 percent versus one percent, and those people who have been most successful will be in the one percent, you have opened up a wave of approach in this country which is entirely inconsistent with the concept of one nation under God. The American people, I believe in the final analysis, will reject it.

It is very difficult to believe that Mitt Romney is seriously interested in the middle class and job creation when he believes that their complaints are based on envy and jealousy. Romney’s personal attacks on Obama are the mark of a very desperate campaign. The Romney campaign is trying to undo hundreds of millions of dollars in negative ad spending on their part and behalf by claiming that they are the real positive force for change in the race.

They have also given up on trying to make Romney more personally popular, and are now focused on attacking President Obama’s personal popularity. Mitt Romney is running the textbook negative campaign. Each step in their strategy is straight out of Negative Campaigning 101, but the reason why candidates like Romney lose, and in most cases lose badly, is because the negativity has cumulative effect that pushes voters away from them.

Mitt Romney exasperates this by being genuinely, personally unlikeable as a candidate. Romney’s rich guy, you are all just jealous of me claims are a peek into the real thoughts of the Republican nominee. The whining, complaining, and apology demanding strategy is designed to attack the personal character of Obama, but an unintended consequence of this is that is also reveals a piece of Romney’s true character.

No one is going to feel sympathy and vote for the complaining rich guy, especially when he believes that everyone is jealous of him and his money.

  1. He is pompous and egotistical, and if anyone is on a power trip, he is. I can’t stand him and it has nothing to do with his money. There is something in his character that makes me want to run the other way. He’s an arrogant, spoiled man child. You can tell from his past history of bullying and animal cruelty that he thinks he’s better than everyone and every thing.

  2. Let me tell who epitomizes exudes replicates duplicates that hunger vision desire for power and money ..its not enough he has over 250 million..its not enough that ryan his buddy is also worth millions..they have no worries. so no matter what they do TO YOUR GRANDPARENTS their elders have MILLIONS TO BE CARED FOR. Not a worry in the world. Those grandmas of these potential running presidents should be flat out ashamed of themselves.NOT EVEYRONE HAS A RICH SON WHO MAKES MONEY OFF INSIDER TRADING AND TAKING JOBS FROM AMERICA TO MAKE PROFITS. Hardly NO ONE has sons like that. Even their elders are shameless. The things the GOP teach their constituents is beyond hate and greed. ITS FLAT OUT SICK HOW THE GOP LIES TO THEIR CONSTITUENCY EVERY SINGLE DAY. And they lap it up and are ready to die for the GOP. really..what else are they voting GOP for? There’s nothing there for YOU THE PEOPLE in their book. Its all about CORPORATIONS AND ROMNEYS RYANS GOP POCKETS!

  3. I’d like to dedicate an oldie by The Alan Parsons Project from their album – I Robot – “I Wouldn’t Want To Be Like You”

    Mr. Romney,

“If I had a mind to, I wouldn’t wanna think like you
And if I had a time to, I wouldn’t wanna talk to you

I don’t care what you do, I wouldn’t want to be like you

If I was high class, I wouldn’t need a buck to pass
And if I was a fall guy, I wouldn’t need no alibi

I don’t care what you do, I wouldn’t want to be like you”

  4. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: You really do need an editor, Jason. Could there be some missing words in this sentence:

“It is very difficult that Mitt Romney is seriously interested in the middle class and job creation when he believes that their complaints are based on envy and jealousy.”

How missing words in the sentence that ends that paragraph?

“The Romney campaign is trying to undo hundreds of millions of dollars in negative ad spending on their part and behalf by claiming that they are the real positive force for change in the race.”

See anything wrong with this sentence (and I’m not even talking about the comma that would improve it): “Mitt Romney exasperates this by being genuinely personally unlikeable as a candidate.”

This one’s just a mess and could have used a whole bunch of dashes to string together a thought:

“Romney’s rich guy, you are all just jealous of me claims are a peek into the real thoughts of the Republican nominee” would be readable if it said “Romney’s rich-guy-you-are-all-just-jealous-of-me claims are a peek into the real thoughts of the Republican nominee.”

To keep to your theme: I’m jealous that a life-long, professional writer like myself feels relegated to the sidelines in this internet age when everybody seems to think they are a writer.

  5. LMAOOOOOOO!

“I think he’ll do anything in his power to try and get reelected.”

THIS, from the guy who will say or do ANYTHING to pander to voters. The Master of FlipFlop. Hilarious!

He’s cracking, folks. His campaign is flailing and floundering. His wife, that he uses to hide behind, is cracking. If you haven’t seen the clip of her defending their non-release of tax returns, do so. The anger and desperation and stress are palpable.

And lastly, I will leave you with my food for thought for the month: If they have nothing to hide in the tax returns, wouldn’t they be delighted to have Dems waste a ton of time and money picking them apart, only to find nothing?

  6. Some of my corrections were incorporated before I managed to post. Good for you.

    With all my love,
Headly Westerfield, who is EXASPERATED at the continued misuse of this word.

  7. Jealous of him?..people do not even like him..

This old momma’s boy has been looking for someone to like and trust him for ages…Dorks and liars do not elicit jealousy..Laughter maybe..derision not jealousy!

  8. Mitt, I wouldn’t want to be you even for all the money in the world. Dude, you have really, really, really bad karma. When you bought those companies & loaded them up with debt, and stole the workers pensioin funds, then outsourced their jobs, you caused a whole lot of pain to those people and their families. You ruined entire communities.

Frankly, I don’t know how you even sleep at night. Only a person with no empathy for others could do the things you’ve done. I truly believe you are a socoiopath, and would never consider voting for you.

  9. Classic transference.

“And the President seems to be running just to hang on to power. I think he’ll do anything in his power to try and get reelected.” When he says this, he is talking about himself.”

When people talk about what they think others feel, quite often, they are expressing their own feelings. This is even more true for the mentally ill.

Romney is Jealous of Obama’s power and he is willing to do anything to get it.

  10. “I’m not concerned about the very poor.” — Mitt Romney

Goodness, Willard — after a statement like that, why would ANYBODY be jealous of you . . .

    .

  11. I’m not “jealous” or “envious” of Mitt Romney.

    I am SUSPICIOUS of him.

    BIG difference.

… where are your tax returns, Mr. Romney?

  12. These comments by Romney show exactly where his interests lie. He has disdain for the majority of us. It oozes from his every pore, especially when he accuses PBO of “dividing” the country into the 99% vs. the 1%. IMO, it sends a clear message that a Romney presidency would represent the interests of the 1% over those of the 99%.

  13. Not everyone cares to have millions. I don’t and would give most away if I somehow came about that kind of money. Romney is really stupid to be running for president. He would be a puppet just as Bush was a puppet for Cheney, right wing extremist and Wall St.

Surely the American people do not wish for 4 more years of the Bush administration as the same people would be running our country that almost destroyed our entire economy.

  14. Jealous?
Romney’s assuming that everyone wants tons ond tons of money. As if that in itself is the shared dream of all Americans. Hey Mitt, I know you are all wrapped up in your posh lifestyle and dependent on all you piles of money to live and be happy, but don’t assume we are all douche bag rich guys like you. Many of us value things that are not “things” and do not place money over morality or ethical behavior. I for one am not jealous of Wrongney, especially with what is in store for him.

  15. Sounds more like he’s personally ashamed of what he’s doing, but is so greedy, he can’t stop — no, never mind that, he’s just a sociopathic bastard.

Look…Herman Mittster…NOBODY’S JEALOUS OF YOUR MONEY! Sure, a lot of us would LOVE to have it, too, and some will have the chance; but you and others like you have, over the course of DECADES, systematically closed doors of opportunity to others AFTER YOU HAVE USED THE PATHWAYS TO WEALTH! You made your money dishonestly, Mitt, and you have been a serial, pathological LIAR for as long as I’ve heard your voice.

If I could, I WOULD take your fortune — and drop it off with the HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of people who would have had comfortable lives without your toxic interference in their livelihoods. Nobody believes, either, that your fortune is a “mere” $260M; but I’ll take a 3% distributor’s fee from that, give the rest to those you SCREWED OVER, and retire to the job of putting my kids through college (I have one who wants to open a restaurant, Culinary Arts aspirant, another potential veterinarian, & a third who wants to be a Special Forces warrior, then a cop and NBA star **OK, he’s 9!**)

  16. Poor Mitt.
The man has piles of Money and Nothing else.
An Empty Shell. A Hollow Man. A Well Dressed Ghost.

The only people that are Jealous of Mitt Romnay
are Other Lost Souls like Mitt. People that know
the value of Money and Nothing Else.

  17. Yeah…I’m jealous of some asshole who feels like people should take him at his word that he’s not dishonest, but he won’t provide a single document to support him.

  18. “My campaign is about unity?” Except for LGBT people, the middle class, and the poor, and women …. get real Romney. You are divisive and an elitist!

  19. Dear Mr Romney;
Most people don’t hate you and aren’t jealous of your because of your wealth. Many very wealthy people of recent have been very well loved and popular, Gates, Buffet, Jobs, etc. People dislike you because you are a pompous deuchbag that has no connection with the real world and its inhabitants.
    You’re welcome ;-)

  20. Mr. Romney: Americans are very ashamed of you. To think that someone like you is running for the highest office of the land. when you have shown over and over that you can’t be trusted. It is obvious that you have no idea that you would be working for the people of your country not the other way around. If you can’t relate to them because of your rich boy upbringing how could you possibly work for them in a fair way. Why do you think that you could do a better job than the man who is in the White House now ? I expect you think so because you are white, well President Obama is black and white and he has more class in his little finger than you have as a whole person. I am not even sure that you are a whole person. I think perhaps when this election is over and you have lost it might be good for you if you get some serious therapy for that huge ego of yours. In the meantime while this campaign is going on would you please stop your whining because every thing isn’t going your way. I believe that before election day you will have to show your tax returns as you will have no choice and that will be seriously bad news for you. I will not call you a bunch of angry names as that serves no purpose. But mark my words it is all going to catch up to you and when it does no one will believe a word you say.

  21. Truly it must be sad to be a wealthy man who got that way by stealing the very lives from others. To be someone who has pirated his way through life and has not made a dime through creativity or productivity. I do not envy him at all.

  22. Obama is not trying to make voters envious of him. He is trying to convince voters that Mitt is a lying bumbling , self-absorbed twit that is unfit to be President. And, Mitt, he doesn’t have to try very hard to do that. You are doing just fine pouring gasoline on yourself daily. Soon, you will remember to bring the matches.

  23. There are none so blind as those who will not see. Look around you Mitt. YOU are the Republican choice to run for Prez. WHY? You are, clearly, the antithesis of who they would really want. They’re not even sure you’re really a Christian, which they scream to the rafters is probably their #1 requirement. The ONLY reason you’re there is because every other candidate, Bible-thumping sociopaths, one and all, were even worse than YOU. You are the plastic, teflon-coated almost-man, i.e., the ka-ka doesn’t stick well. No one is proud of you. No one is inspired by you. If you were to be elected, no one would cry with happiness or shout for joy at your inauguration, except maybe that barracuda you’re married to. You are unfit for any public office. The fact that you aspire to the Presidency means you have absolutely zero understanding of what that office means. Go home. For once in your life, do something useful, and sit down and really THINK about the untold and probably immeasurable damage you and your extreme capitalist ‘ventures’ did to thousands and thousands and thousands of people. Do the world a favor and shut up. You have enough bad karma to ignite the world.

  24. Willard Rommey is unreal! he truly believes someone is jealous of him? including Obama? I’ve now officially heard it all! I’m a (financially) a lower middle class black male and being jealous of Willard has never and would never be a thought in my mind. I’d rather be dirt farmer poor and have good friends enjoy God’s blessings feel confident of a after life with the all mightly. Compared to a dry stiff robotic cold hearted racist, and a racist leaning religion like the mormons latter day loons. Willard money is a tool! and you’ll be judged on how you used it here and definitely after you leave here! Willard I got some upsetting news for you! that 250 million! ya can’t take it with you buddy.

  25. The republican party is an utter disgrace! their party has nothing of value the american public. This is a party that is 87% caucasian 37% over the age of 65 and 14% between the ages of 45 to 65! now 47% claim to be evangelical christians (NOT!!!!) Willard Rommey just exposes the republican party for being so pathetic because if this is their best candidate their in trouble! Republicans don’t even like Willard their only voting for him because they can’t stand a non white non male as president. The gop could have dug up Adolph hitler from the grave ran him as their nominee and the republicans would vote for Hitler. The republican party can’t even field a creditable candidate! the republicans are heavily counting on the racist white over 60 voters to get them a victory good luck with that on!
