While Angry Ann Romney Rages, First Lady Michelle Obama Charms

Last updated on February 8th, 2013 at 01:45 pm

As Ann Romney angrily raged at the American people, Michelle Obama was charming voters voters by describing our shared experiences.

Here is the video of Ann Romney:

Sarah Jones had the play by play of Mrs. Romney’s contempt for the voters,

Natalie Morales, “Why not be transparent, and release more than the 2010 and the estimates for 2011?”

Ann Romney,”Have you seen how we’re attacked? Have you seen what’s happened?”

Natalie Morales, “It’s been in the press quite a bit. Are you angry that it’s been in the press? I mean, should you not be questioned about your finances?”

Ann Romney, doing a poor job of hiding her anger, “We have been very transparent to what’s legally required of us. But, (talking down to Morales as if she’s a child), the more we release, the more we get attacked. The more we get questioned. (Yes, because your one year of tax returns was still unclear and raised a lot of questions.) The more we get pushed. And so we’ve done what’s legally required. And there’s going to be no more tax releases given. There’s a reason for that. And that’s because how, what happens when we release anything.”

Apparently, in Mrs. Romney’s worldview, if America doesn’t respond to the limited information she wants to share, they will be punished by not getting anymore. This is Romney “transparency”.

Contrast Ann Romney’s anger with Michelle Obama in Iowa.

A snippet of what the First Lady had to say,

And the one thing I share with people is that over the last three and a half years, as First Lady, I have had the chance to see up close and personal what being President really looks like. And I’ve seen some things. (Laughter.) But seriously, I have seen how the issues that come across the President’s desk are always the hard ones — the problems with no clear solutions, the judgment calls where the stakes are so high and there’s absolutely no margin for error.

And as President, I’ve seen how you’re going to get all kinds of advice and opinions from all kinds of people. But the truth is that at the end of the day, as President, all you have to guide you are your values and your vision and your life experiences. In the end, it all boils down to who you are and what you stand for. (Applause.)

And we all know who my husband is, don’t we? (Applause.) And we all know what he stands for. (Applause.) He is the son of a single mother who struggled to put herself through school and pay the bills. He’s the grandson of a woman who woke up before dawn every day to catch a bus to her job at the bank.

And even though Barack’s grandmother worked hard to help support his family and she was good at her job, like so many women, she hit that glass ceiling and watched men no more qualified than she was — men she’d actually trained — climb up that ladder ahead of her.

So what I remind people is that your President knows what it means when a family struggles. This is not a hypothetical situation for him. He knows what it means to want something better for your kids and your grandkids. (Applause.) And that’s why I love him, that’s why I married. And that’s what I think about every night when I put Malia and Sasha to bed. Sometimes they put me to bed. (Laughter.) I can’t stay up later than them anymore.

But I think about the world that I want to leave for them, for all of our sons and daughters. I think about how I want to give our kids that foundation for their dreams, opportunities worthy of their promise — because all of our children in this country are worthy. (Applause.) We all want to work to give them that sense of limitless possibility, that belief that here in America, the greatest country on Earth, there’s always something better out there if you’re willing to work for it. (Applause.)

There is a difference between sitting down for a television interview and appearing on the stump, but the differences between these two women are a microcosm of the 2012 election. Ann Romney, like her husband, comes off as negative and defensive. Even watching Mrs. Romney on the campaign trail, one does not see a warm person. For the Romneys, this election isn’t about you. It’s about them. They aren’t doing this for you. They are campaigning because they feel that the White House is their rightful home.

Republicans and their media lackeys are trying to define the Obama campaign as the most negative race ever run, but if you watch the Obamas on the campaign trail, you’ll see smiles and an optimism for the future. If Mitt Romney’s message is that America is doomed, Barack Obama is telling the country that he still believes in us and he knows we are destined for more greatness.

Michelle Obama has an ability to relate to people and their experiences that Ann Romney completely lacks. Mrs. Romney has no clue how “you people” live, but Michelle Obama hasn’t forgotten that she was one of “you people”, not all that long ago. The Obamas understand what it is like to be middle class. In contrast, the Romneys have never been middle class.

The Romney campaign’s secret weapon (Ann Romney) has turned into a WMD of self destruction fueled by arrogance, entitlement, and contempt. President Obama has a powerful and beloved surrogate in the First Lady, while Mitt Romney has to contend with angry Ann Romney ranting from her golden throne.

While Ann Romney rages, Michelle Obama charms. Two women, two parties, and two very different visions of who America is and what our future could be.
