Republicans Hit a New Low and Blame Obama for the Cold War

Last updated on February 8th, 2013 at 12:38 am

Showing that they will blame Obama for anything, Republicans have revived charges that the president has abandoned Czechoslovakia. A nation that hasn’t existed since 1993.

Transcript from ABC’s This Week:

TAPPER: Liz, Mitt Romney was criticized a lot this week, not just by Democrats, but even by some of his fellow Republicans for responding too quickly and for what was he saying in his response. You actually are not among those critics. You think he got it right.

CHENEY: I think he did get it right. I think that actually the statement this week that should have received more criticism and attention was the president’s, when the president went into the Rose Garden 24 hours after the Cairo embassy attack, rightly, of course, condemned the killing of our ambassador in Libya, failed to even mention the Cairo attack. And, you know, I think that — that in a situation in which an embassy has been attacked, the flag’s been ripped down, the Al Qaida flag has been flown, that America’s president not to even mention it clearly sends a signal to radicals across the region.

And, you know, I would disagree with George to the extent that we’ve now had three-and-a-half years of Obama policy, and it looks an awful lot like, whether you’re talking about the Mexico City speech in 2009, the Cairo speech in 2009, the extent to which he’s been apologizing for America, he’s abandoned some of our key allies, like Israel, Poland, Czechoslovakia, he’s attempted to appease our enemies, the Iranians, for example, the Russians. He’s now getting ready, as we watch these scenes unfold on the air, to slash our defense. And the defense sequestration includes over $120 billion for embassy security. And so the president himself’s got a terrible record on national security. And it’s clearly something that Governor Romney ought rightly to be pushing.

We can’t let the Soviets get Poland and Czechoslovakia, or the Cold War will be lost. Wait a minute, Czechoslovakia was officially dissolved on January 1, 1993. Liz Cheney was blaming Obama for abandoning a key ally that hasn’t existed in almost 20 years.

Liz Cheney isn’t the only member of Team Romney with a case of Cold Waritis.

Back in April, Romney foreign policy adviser John Lehman warned America of the encroaching Soviet threat.

Lehman said, “We’re seeing the Soviets pushing into the Arctic with no response from us. In fact, the only response is to announce the early retirement of the last remaining icebreaker.”

Former Bush Ambassador Pierre Prosper also sounded the warning alarm that Obama is losing Czechoslovakia, “The United States abandoned its missile defense sites in Poland and Czechoslovakia, yet Russia does nothing but obstruct us, or efforts in Iran and Syria.”

Oh my God, get him out of there now!!! Obama is losing the Cold War. If we reelect him, we’ll all be speaking Russian by 2014. Better dead than red.

Either Obama has gotten in the Delorean, went back in time Marty McFly style and lost the Cold War, or the Republican foreign policy mindset is still stuck in the 1980s. Since to the best of our knowledge Obama has no Delorean, it is clear that Republican thought on foreign policy stopped somewhere around 1985.

The sad thing about this is that it doesn’t matter whether it it’s Czechoslovakia or the Czech Republic, Republicans are wrong about Obama.

Here is what the president said during a joint 2011 press conference with Czech Prime Minister Necas.

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Well, I want to extend a heartfelt welcome to Prime Minister Necas and his delegation. This gives me a chance to return the hospitality that the Czech people have provided me on the two occasions that I’ve had an opportunity to visit. I’ve always been someone who not only wanted to visit but — wanted to visit the Czech Republic, but also because I come from Chicago — we’ve got a lot of people who are originally from the Czech Republic, and they’ve made enormous contributions to our country as well.

With respect to the relationship between the United States and the Czech Republic, it continues to be strong. The Czech Republic is one of our greatest allies and has provided the kind of support and cooperation on both security and non-security issues that is a mark of a true ally. As a fellow NATO member, we have consistently reaffirmed our Article 5 commitment that says that an attack on any one of us is an attack on all of us, and that we have to make sure that we continue to have the kind of strong mutual defense posture that’s required. And the Czech Republic has reflected that commitment in the extraordinary efforts it has made in Afghanistan, for which we are deeply appreciative.

Obama has abandoned the Czech Republic to such a degree that he has only visited the nation twice, and hosted them once.

Of course, none of this matters because Obama is losing the Cold War.

The GOP message to America has become if you don’t vote for Mitt Romney, the Soviets win.

How can we trust Republicans to stand by our allies when they don’t seem to know that Rocky beat Drago and the Cold War is over?

Republicans will literally blame Obama for anything, which includes abandoning nations that no longer even exist.

It is not even October yet, and the Republicans are completely falling apart.
