Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) will deliver the Tea Party response to the State of the Union address, so says the Tea Party Express. He’ll follow Senator Marco Rubio’s (R-FLA) Republican response.
“Tea Party Express, the nation’s largest tea party political action committee, will host the Tea Party response to President Obama’s State of the Union Address directly following the Republican response by Senator Marco Rubio. Senator Rand Paul will deliver the Tea Party response at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.”
I know, you thought the Tea Party was dead, but they can’t pass up an opportunity for another Michele Bachmann-style SOTU response screw up. After her, they graced us with the erudite Herman Cain. This year, Rand Paul will be infusing the nation with his adolescent-esque wisdom gleaned from the pages of Atlas Shrugged, because nothing says fiscal responsibility like basing your entire world view on a work of fiction. His response will be live streamed by the Tea Party express.
Rand, whose stumbles over his opposition to the Civil Rights Act led to him making history by cancelling an appearance on Meet the Press, is the corporate shill who accused Obama of sounding anti-American for asking that BP be held responsible for the oil spill, “What I don’t like from the president’s administration is this sort of, ‘I’ll put my boot heel on the throat of BP.’ I think that sounds really un-American in his criticism of business.”
Even though we are to pretend that the Tea Party is not synonymous with the Republican Party, the Tea Party express notes that Senator Marco Rubio is also a Tea Party guy. While Rubio has no official ties to them, he has been called the “crown prince of the Tea Party movement”. Yes, America is to be treated to a double helping of tea after the State of the Union address!
“Tea Party Express Chairman Amy Kremer said, ‘We are excited to have Senator Paul deliver the 3rd Tea Party State of the Union response next week. Americans are fed up with Washington politics that fail to address America’s fiscal woes. Tea Party Express has called for reducing the size, cost, and intrusiveness of the federal government, and we have stood strongly for pro-growth policies to get the economy growing and job creation increased.'”
With the Tea Party’s approval ratings in the toilet and Frank Luntz desperately trying to get Republicans to sound more like Obama, this can’t be good news for the GOP. Republicans were hoping to use the SOTU response as yet another opportunity for “rebranding”, especially with the Hispanic community. Rubio is even planning on delivering his response in both English and Spanish. But now, Rand I-don’t-support-civil-rights-legislation Paul is going to be reminding Americans of the extremism of the GOP.
That’s a big cup of crazy tea on a night when the GOP can ill afford even it.
