In Boston today, President Obama delivered an inspirational speech, and told the nation that the small stunted individuals who commit terrorism can’t stop us.
President Obama began by quoting scripture, and said Boston’s spirit remains undaunted. The president said, everyone of us has been touched by this attack on your beloved city. “We want to stand with you, because it is our beloved city too.” He called Boston one of the world’s iconic and great cities. The president said, “Boston’s your hometown, but we claim it a little bit too. I know this because there is a piece of Boston in me.” The president talked about his law school experience in the city, and the fact that the city welcomed him and Michelle during the 2004 Democratic convention. The president remembered each of the the three people who died in detail. He offered prayers and hope for the injured, and said, “I have no doubt. You will run again, because that’s what the people of Boston are made of. Your resolve is the greatest rebuke to the people who committed this act.”
Obama said that whoever did this picked the wrong city to do it, and added, “Not here in Boston. Not here in Boston.” The president said, “You’ve shown us Boston, that in the face of evil, we will lift up what’s good.” Obama praised the spirit of doctors, nurses, police, firefighters, and first responders.
The president said that the message we send to those who carried this out is, “Yes, we will find you. Yes, you will face justice…but more than that our fidelity to our way of life…only grows stronger.” He later said, “We may be momentarily knocked off our feet, but we’ll pick ourselves up, we’ll keep going. We’ll finish the race…This doesn’t stop us.”
The president called the bombers “small, stunted individuals,” and explained why the American people don’t cower in fear and celebrate life. Obama lifted up the crowd when he said that this time next year the world and the crowds will return to Boston for the marathon.
President Obama has had to deliver far too many of these speeches during his time in office, but this one was different. This speech was not one of sadness and mourning, but of strength and determination. This was a great speech that seemed to be just what the doctor ordered after what has already been a difficult week.
The president could have delivered a paint by the numbers speech as comforter in chief, but it seemed like the president’s main objective was to lift us up, and remind us of our collective strength.
He used his resolve, determination, and belief in the goodness of this country to lead. It is what a president should do, and it is exactly what this president did.
