Maher said,

The new American voter isn’t some old coot shootin at some food. It’s a young Latino lesbian who smokes a boatload of dope. If Republicans want to pass the torch to the next generation, they need to pass the torch. You say you’re for freedom, and for getting the government off our back. Why not embrace pot? You could own greed and weed. Legalizing it speaks to all of the most hallowed conservative principles like individual rights, deregulation, and of course taking jobs away from Mexicans.

And besides in this age of popping Molly and shooting up with weird Russian drugs that make your skin rot off, pot is conservative. To kids, it’s something the old folks reminisce about on Thanksgiving. Two thirds of Americans under 30 want it to be legal. These are the new voters, and by the time they’re 65, they’ll expect weed to be covered under Medicare Part D.

And like me, they’re probably tired of waiting for Democrats to “evolve” on the issue. President Obama has been a buzzkill on pot from the get go. Despite his doing a great deal of personal research on the issue when he was young. Legalizing pot was on the ballot here a few years ago, but it lost. Mainly because no Democrat would stand up for it. So Hillary, consider yourself warned. If you want to protect the Democratic base of young voters, say goodbye to the pants suits, and say welcome back to stoner Hillary.

The new American voter may not be a hunter, but Republican primary voters are full of old coots who shoot at things. Even though it seems like supporting legalization would be a natural fit ideologically, politically supporting legalization is career suicide in the clutches of just say no Republican Party.

Supporting the legalization of pot is such a natural fit for the Democratic Party and their base that it is bound to happen. The pro-legalization movement is understandably frustrated, but until the mentality that being opposed to legalization is being tough on crime changes, it is going to be a while before anything happens on the federal level.

Republicans are losing the future because of stunts like playing hunter. Ted Cruz was preaching to the choir by pretending to hunt. Democrats made their party bigger and stronger by supporting same sex equality. Legalization is the next step towards turning the Obama coalition into the long term backbone of the Democratic Party.
