Do LGBTQ Republicans Suffer from Cognitive Dissonance?

The Good News according to the Washington Post:

Senate votes to proceed with gay rights bill

Seven Republicans joined 54 members of the Democratic caucus Monday evening in a vote to formally begin consideration of the bill — virtually guaranteeing passage later this week — on legislation that would prohibit discrimination in the workplace against gays.

Joining Kirk were Sens. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), Dean Heller (R-Nev.), Rob Portman (R-Ohio) and Patrick Toomey. (R-Pa.)

The Bad News according to the Washington Post:

House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio), whose caucus is dominated by lawmakers from districts where social conservatives control GOP primaries, reiterated his opposition Monday and declared that he would not bring the legislation to the House floor no matter the Senate outcome.

What the Hell will it take to get the House members to come around? Vote out the Republicans? The biggest supporters of the Republican Party are the corporations and many of them are LGBTQs. Why do the gays and lesbians from Log Cabin endorse ENDA and vote Republican? Isn’t the GOP the same party that wants to stop ENDA in its tracks? Apparently, Log Cabin members are lobbying hard in the House to get Republicans to support ENDA, according to Christian Berle, the Legislative Director at Freedom to Work and Gregory T. Angelo, the Executive Director of Log Cabin Republicans from an opinion in the Huffington Post.

Putting the ‘GOP’ in ENDA

These same Log Cabin members, who want ENDA to pass, vote for people who want to defeat ENDA. Honestly? Log Cabin members probably suffer from cognitive dissonance and like their racist party, will find a way to blame the Democratic Party and keep on supporting the homophobic lawmakers. Berle and Angelo must stop supporting the party that discriminates against LGBTQs, or this will end any hope for our LGBTQ brothers and sisters from being discriminated against. California, a blue state, bans discrimination in the workplace because an employee is LGBTQs. Yet the Log Cabin members in California would still vote Republicans, even at the expense of their civil rights…because an assembly-person or Senator has a “D” in front of their name.

As a lefty, I speak up for and support my LGBTQ brothers and sisters, whether it’s on my Facebook page or at my Unitarian Universalist church. But, I find it disheartening that some of the same people I support are willing to sacrifice their civil rights because a Democrat is in the state capital or even the White House.
