Bill Maher was trying to explain to Republicans why their hero Ronald Reagan can never be the equal of John F. Kennedy.

Maher said,

One reason we looked uglier in the eighties is because we were uglier. It was when the Baby Boomers, the generation that was supposed to be different, just gave up and sold out completely. Kennedy’s time was the time of ask not what your country can do for you. Reagan’s time was greed is good.

JFK was far from perfect, but he was a true wit and sex machine, and he knew how to wear a pair of shades. Reagan was an amiable square in a cowboy hat who had sex with a woman he called mommy. Kennedy was James Bond. Reagan was Matlock. Love him or hate him, we win. Republicans can call Reagan their Kennedy all they want, but it’s like calling Miller High Life the champagne of beers. It’s why calling someone your Kennedy will never really cut it, because our Kennedy is Kennedy.

The comparison between Kennedy and Reagan brings up one of the main problems with today’s Republican Party. Being a Republican isn’t cool. There are no stars in the Republican Party. There is no cool. Reagan wasn’t cool, but much like Eisenhower, he was the comforting grandpa type that fit the mood of the country in the eighties.

Republicans are always looking for their next Reagan, but today’s America doesn’t need a Reagan. They don’t need grandpa to come in and tell them how great the country still is.

Chris Christie is banking on voters looking for somebody who can get things done, but Christie lacks the look and cool that says 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. There isn’t a single potential Republican candidate who gives off the vibe of a cool leader. The Republican governors like Christie and Walker are big fish in small ponds. Paul Ryan is an already failed national candidate, and the senators like Rubio, Paul, and Cruz are visionless balls of ambition that are devoid of any transcendent personality.

President Obama is cool. The Clintons even in their 60s are still cool. Republicans aren’t cool. They aren’t cutting edge on any issue. They aren’t out front. The Republican Party has become America’s elderly voice that is determined to resist change for no reason. For a Republican Party that is mostly driven by white grandpas, Reagan is Kenney, but to an electorate that is getting more diverse, Reagan is unrelatable old white guy with a jellybean fetish.

What began with FDR and runs through Kennedy, Clinton, and Obama holds true today. Democrats remain the party of cool.
