Obama Calls Out Fox News For Spreading Lies About Equal Pay

At an event announcing executive action on equal pay today, President Obama called out Fox News for spreading lies about the pay gap.

The president said:

Everybody who cares about this should pay attention to how the Senate votes tomorrow on this Paycheck Fairness Act, because the majority of senators supports this bill, but two years ago a minority of Senate Republicans blocked this from getting a vote.

Even worse, some commentators are out there saying the pay gap doesn’t even exist. They say it’s a myth, but it’s not a myth. It’s math. You can look at the paychecks, look at the stubs. I mean, Lilly Ledbetter didn’t just make this up. The court when it looked at the documents said, yep, yep, you’ve been getting paid less for doing the same job. Just the court then said, as Lilly said, it’s been happening so long you couldn’t do anything about it anymore, which made no sense, and that’s why we had to sign another bill.

It’s basic math that adds up to real money. It makes a real difference for a lot of Americans that are working hard to support their families, and of course, the fact that we got some resistance on this from folks up on Capitol Hill just fits with the larger problem. This vision that congressional Republicans seem to be continually embracing. This notion that you know, what you’re just on your own no matter how unfair things are.

When President Obama referred to commentators who are claiming that the pay gap doesn’t exist, he was talking about Fox News.

Here is a collection of clips of Fox News claiming that the pay gap isn’t real, and women get paid more than men:

The president took two steps today. He signed an executive order that prohibits federal contractors from retaliating against employees who choose to discuss their compensation. The order doesn’t force anyone to discuss equal pay or make pay rates public, but it does not all employers to forbid employees from discussing compensation with each other.

President Obama also signed a Presidential Memorandum instructing the Secretary of Labor to establish new regulations that require federal contractors to submit to the Department of Labor summary data on compensation paid to their employees, including data by sex and race. The Department of Labor will use the data to make sure that federal contractors are in compliance with equal pay laws.

Republicans are claiming that it is condescending to fight for equal pay for women. They are also labeling the Paycheck Fairness Act a desperate political ploy. What they won’t explain is why they are opposed to women getting paid the same amount as men for doing the same work at the same job. They don’t want to talk about that.

President Obama was right to call out Fox News, without mentioning their name, for spreading falsehoods about the pay gap. For millions of Americans, equal pay is a critical economic. Republicans who claim that this is a political ploy don’t understand what it is like to work hard and still be struggling to make ends meet.

Equal pay isn’t a “women’s issue.” It’s an American issue. This discrimination hurts the economy. Republicans are living in an alternate reality where the pay gap doesn’t really exist, but they are going to get a jolt back into the real world this November when women and men who care about this issue go to the polls on Election Day.

  1. And the Reich Wing will hold this up as “the lefts war on women” which you know damned well that they will spin in the opposite direction. They live in an completely alternate world, the only logical conclusion is that the right has their batteries wired in reverse. Guess they must have a denial of diodes also since diodes are all sciencey’ an’ stuff!

  2. Anyone who at this point believes ANYTHING that is said on Fox is probably too far gone to understand the math anyway.

  3. They keep bringing out these repugnant party women to try to explain this away. They had some RNC woman on MSNBC this morning who talked apples to oranges and never did answer the question. Some of their arguments are, “women are bad negotiators”, “women choose to have families”, “women would prefer flex time to equal pay”, and “women don’t get the right college degrees”.

From a mans point of view I would have to say women are pretty damn good negotiators! Of course women have to have time off, men can’t bear children. If women wanted flex time instead of equal pay they wouldn’t be saying they want equal pay. The college degree thing is to stupid to even answer.

Oh, and I forgot one. The Dems are using this as an election issue. Well Duh! Like that was a national secret. The repugnants, even when confronted with an issue will twist and contort and sidestep. It has to be something in the water.

  4. Phil, now you know that if the Republicans used something as a political issue or wedge issue then the excuse not reason would be “because the American people have spoken”. And we all know that is a load of horsefeathers! when they say “American people” they mean “the Wealthy Corporate Christian people!…not or ever the real people. Those real people are spoken for by the Democrats.

  5. You”re exactly right Joseph. It is astounding how they dodge a question, go off on a tangent and then look at you like how you you not possibly understand. I got off on a tangent there. I meant to say something about Faux news, but just saying Faux “news” is pretty self explanatory.

  6. President Obama is governing like I’d thought he would his first term but I need to keep in mind that he was fighting a terrorist organization here at home! it’s called the GOP! so of course ANYTHING Obama tried to accomplish the NEO CONFEDERATE PARTY started flooding the airwaves with race baiting tactics like, “the black guy coming fer ya guns!” and sales skyrocketed at gun shops!! or Obama has a DEEP seeded HATRED of caucasians!! then theres that birther movement swill! hell a convservative writer jerome corsi wrote a book saying Obama is married to a ”man” from pakistan, UNREA!! the GOP is beyond CRAZY!!

  7. Allow me to translate this from Fox/conservative into American:

“Women already have equal pay. Passing an equal pay law will make no difference. In fact giving them something they already have would be a disaster.
It will also somehow affect ME negatively, even though I just said that they already have equal pay and a law will change nothing. (It’s kinda like the way gay marriage will affect MY non gay marriage.)”

  8. I agree with Knight4444 about the right wing extremists (which is most of the GOP today) being a domestic terrorist organization. They are a bigger threat to our democracy and our American way of life than any foreign terrorist organization in existence today. From conservative politicians to fundamentalist clergy, from right wing talk radio and all of Faux News- their primary objective is to bring down our President and our Federal government. They are more ruthless and more dangerous than the Taliban or Al Queda, yet they operate with impunity in this country under the protection of our Constitution. Something is definitely wrong with this picture.

  9. It’s really pathetic how so many americans have been brainwashed into believing the myth that Muslim extremist or ANY other foreign terrorist organization is our NO. 1 threat! truth be known, 911 was a USA government production! to sucker us into selling our civil liberties, and giving BILLIONS of tax dollars to feed the military industrial complex and also to finish the job george bush sr. didn’t accomplish, it’s not Al Qaeda the USA needs to fear! it’s the GOP! and it’s brainless hick minions!! BTW, I’m so PROUD bush jr captured Bin Laden, oh wait, Obama got Bin Laden, my bad!!

  10. If women were paid the same as men, I think many men would decide they could stay home and take care of the baby for awhile. How great would that be. Imagine choices for the family?

  11. It amaze me to see that Repub fight against their own interest. Most of them should be ashamed of themselves for how they think of women and treat them. How selfish can they be????

  12. It’s pathetic and sad the way Repub treat women. If they had a choice, they would treat them much much worse.

  13. The last paragraph said it best:
    “Equal pay isn’t a “women’s issue.” It’s an American issue. ”

    Touche! It’s an AMERICAN ISSUE.
Yet the Democrats will play this one for all it’s worth to women by saying those big bad mean old white Republicans don’t want you to have equal pay.(because they need every living female vote this Nov., and perhaps thousands of deceased female votes, too)

What trash & nonsense! There are currently laws on the books that were passed to accomplish what this bill proposes and they don’t work. So if you toss another law at the books, maybe something will stick? Ludicrous. It’s like pulling out all your teeth when 1 hurts Yeah, that will definitely take care of the problem. No teeth, no pain. Has no one enough brain power in DC to figure out how to make the current laws effective? I swear these legislators write and pass extraneous laws because they have nothing else to do.

  14. Great subject matter with so much potential for educating the public. Too bad editing oversights make it darn near unintelligible.

    Exhibit A:

The order doesn’t force anyone to discuss equal pay or make pay rates public, but it does not all employers to forbid employees from discussing compensation with each other.

There are some important words missing after the comma. I’m surprised anyone before me could understand enough to make a comment. How do you know what you’re commenting on?

  15. Exhibit B:

For millions of Americans, equal pay is a critical economic.

    … a critical economic WHAT?

Ugh. The good news is, anyone can publish an opinion. The bad news is, anyone can publish an opinion.
