Pay Us Back: House Republicans Owe Taxpayers $14 Million For Benghazi Investigations

boehner-surprised

House Republicans have already wasted 14 million taxpayer dollars on Benghazi investigations. Instead of appointing a Select House Committee on Benghazi, Speaker Boehner needs to pay the taxpayers back the money that he has wasted.

Speaker of the House John Boehner announced today that he is appointing a select committee to investigate Benghazi:

Americans learned this week that the Obama Administration is so intent on obstructing the truth about Benghazi that it is even willing to defy subpoenas issued by the standing committees of the People’s House. These revelations compel the House to take every possible action to ensure the American people have the truth about the terrorist attack on our consulate that killed four of our countrymen. In light of these new developments, the House will vote to establish a new select committee to investigate the attack, provide the necessary accountability, and ensure justice is finally served.

The administration’s withholding of documents – emails showing greater White House involvement in misleading the American people – is a flagrant violation of trust and undermines the basic principles of oversight upon which our system of government is built. And it forces us to ask the question, what else about Benghazi is the Obama administration still hiding from the American people?

Yesterday at her press conference Democratic Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) called out the swerve that House Republicans are trying to pull, “And If you all want to sit around and talk about Benghazi, you can sit around and talk about Benghazi. But the fact is that’s subterfuge and they don’t want to talk about jobs, growth, immigration reform, voting rights, you name it.”

House Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member, Rep. Sander Levin (D-MI) summed up what Republicans are really up to, “Another day, another desperate Republican effort to dredge up a political scandal even after a year of evidence has proven otherwise. The IRS has spent more than $14 million in taxpayer money accommodating Republican requests, turning over more than 600,000 pages of documents, none of which substantiate the GOP’s wild attempt from the get-go to tar the administration.”

The truth is that House Republicans have wasted tens millions of dollars on Obamacare, Benghazi, and IRS investigations. They are doing this because they refuse to pass any legislation of substance, so this is their way of looking busy while pretending to do something.

The same Republicans who say that the nation can’t afford a jobs program for veterans and an extension of unemployment benefits for the long-term unemployed are wasting tens of millions of dollars investigating a conspiracy with no evidence of wrongdoing by the White House. Tell Republicans that this must stop now.

House Republicans owe the American people $14 million, and it is time for them to shut up and pay up.

  1. That 14 million is just IRS cost, how about all the time we’ve paid those nincompoops in the House to waste on this AND the 50+ votes to repeal ACA? I say total it up then divide by obstructing R’s and make’em pay! What a waste.

  2. This really needs to stop! Stop wasting our money!!! They should take it out of their own paychecks and then we will see how fast they stop spending.

GOP is out of hand and if this country does not wake up we will be slaves to all the Republican owners out there. Its all about keeping their money safe, not about helping others which is why they are suppose to be there.

Used to be a Congressman was someone that wasn’t a millionaire, but someone that had a lot of social contacts; they knew what the people wanted and could relate that to our laws. This is now upside down, its not about the people and it is about how much money you can raise and how many special interest groups that can give you money. People used to be barbers and were elected to Congress, now its all about the money! GOP Congressman have no idea what the common people want or need, nor do they care.

Vote these GOP hypocrites out of office!!!

  3. Since when does that party listen to We the people? They do not listen to anyone except themselves, and than only those that agree with them. They do not even listen to the people that voted for them. The whole bunch needs to be voted out at the first opportunity. In the meantime, they will continue to waste millions of dollars that could and should have been put to better use. It is time for them to be held accountable.

  4. They don’t just owe taxpayers $14 million dollars. They owe us their $174,000 salaries for not doing the job they were sent there to do. They have lied, cheated and stole from the American people. If this was a private business they would have been gone long ago. It’s time to dismantle this “den of thieves.”

  5. How about the government shutdown that the republicans were responsible for, that cost the taxpayers $26 billion. That would have paid for the unemployment extension for a year. I don’t hear anything from Boehner about how that needs to be paid back. The republican party needs to be a thing of the past. If things don’t change, I think a revolution will soon follow. I never really understood this when watching it happen in other countries, but now it makes sense and I can really see how it could happen. When we watch someone like Boehner turning his back on Americans who are losing everything they have, people are only going to put up with it for so long before they have had enough and feel they have nothing else to lose. The republicans are being bought out by the 1%. We need to get rid of Paul Ryan too. Everyone needs to get out and vote in November so we can change this.

  6. I know I’m not the only one posting here who remembers that a few months ago the Heritage Foundation issued its’ orders to House republicans. The HF told them not to pass any legislation this year and to focus on investigations. For a party of people who always talk about how “strong and brave” they are, they look like wimps to me for allowing an outside organization to push them around and tell them what to do. I didn’t know that until recently the HF members attended every meeting the House republicans held. This is highly unusual. Imho, any group of politicians who take their marching orders from a special interest group, and not the American people, should be voted out of office sooner, rather than later.

  7. And let’s not forget the money lost of the government shutdown, the $1.45Million each “repeal of the ACA” costs, and the money Congress steals from us with every pay check and insurance premium by not working, etc., etc., and so forth.

  8. The $14 million is actually for the IRS 501(c) non-scandal. You know, the one where Rethuglicans try to mendaciously claim that only right-wing “charities” were targeted by the IRS.

“The IRS has spent more than $14 million in taxpayer money accommodating Republican requests, turning over more than 600,000 pages of documents, none of which substantiate the GOP’s wild attempt from the get-go to tar the administration.”

    =======

Dude…the shutdown didn’t cost taxpayers anything.
The $24B figure that’s casually tossed around refers to an ECONOMIC loss….which didn’t happen either.
There was some DELAY in spending due to the shutdown but there was no damage to the economy from lost wages or cancelled travel. In the wider view of the whole economy, the money just ended up being spent at a later point in time or ended up in different cash registers.
Offsetting economic gains are harder to find but they exist nonetheless.
The reality is that while the shutdown may not have accomplished anything other than disrupting alot of people’s lives, it did not cause damage to the national economy. That typically happens when the government is open.

  10. Oh nevermind

It fits the day…I’m wearing a fabulous new frock and it’s delightful outside so I’m going out to play.

    TTYL…

    Good to see you dj.

  11. WE lost over $76 million in revenue because federal parks were shut down alone. Federal contractors lost contract money and will not receive that. Federal workers had their wages frozen but I think they received back pay. Military families had no services, i.e. child care, the commissaries were closed for a while…so Yes they did cost the taxpayers money and grief for those who are in the military or are government contractors.

  12. Let’s get one thing straight: BOTH sides were responsible for the shutdown. Arbitrarily assigning blame to only one side is both childish and laughable. The Democrats were just as capable of compromise as the Republicans. Unless, of course, you’re really saying that Democrats are actually more rigid and less reasonable that Republicans.

  13. Compromise on what? The democrats did not have to compromise on anything

All the questions have been answered. There is no conspiracy. Just like the3 fake IRS scandal They are using this simply to attack Dems. And costing us money
