House Republicans have already wasted 14 million taxpayer dollars on Benghazi investigations. Instead of appointing a Select House Committee on Benghazi, Speaker Boehner needs to pay the taxpayers back the money that he has wasted.

Speaker of the House John Boehner announced today that he is appointing a select committee to investigate Benghazi:

Americans learned this week that the Obama Administration is so intent on obstructing the truth about Benghazi that it is even willing to defy subpoenas issued by the standing committees of the People’s House. These revelations compel the House to take every possible action to ensure the American people have the truth about the terrorist attack on our consulate that killed four of our countrymen. In light of these new developments, the House will vote to establish a new select committee to investigate the attack, provide the necessary accountability, and ensure justice is finally served.

The administration’s withholding of documents – emails showing greater White House involvement in misleading the American people – is a flagrant violation of trust and undermines the basic principles of oversight upon which our system of government is built. And it forces us to ask the question, what else about Benghazi is the Obama administration still hiding from the American people?

Yesterday at her press conference Democratic Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) called out the swerve that House Republicans are trying to pull, “And If you all want to sit around and talk about Benghazi, you can sit around and talk about Benghazi. But the fact is that’s subterfuge and they don’t want to talk about jobs, growth, immigration reform, voting rights, you name it.”

House Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member, Rep. Sander Levin (D-MI) summed up what Republicans are really up to, “Another day, another desperate Republican effort to dredge up a political scandal even after a year of evidence has proven otherwise. The IRS has spent more than $14 million in taxpayer money accommodating Republican requests, turning over more than 600,000 pages of documents, none of which substantiate the GOP’s wild attempt from the get-go to tar the administration.”

The truth is that House Republicans have wasted tens millions of dollars on Obamacare, Benghazi, and IRS investigations. They are doing this because they refuse to pass any legislation of substance, so this is their way of looking busy while pretending to do something.

The same Republicans who say that the nation can’t afford a jobs program for veterans and an extension of unemployment benefits for the long-term unemployed are wasting tens of millions of dollars investigating a conspiracy with no evidence of wrongdoing by the White House. Tell Republicans that this must stop now.

House Republicans owe the American people $14 million, and it is time for them to shut up and pay up.
