House Democrat Slams Darrell Issa For His Latest Benghazi Publicity Stunt

Cummings Issa

Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) shredded Darrell Issa’s Benghazi subpoena of Sec. of State John Kerry by calling it a publicity stunt.

In a press release describing the subpoena of Secretary of State Kerry, Rep. Issa (R-CA) said, “The State Department’s response to the congressional investigation of the Benghazi attack has shown a disturbing disregard for the Department’s legal obligations to Congress. Compliance with a subpoena for documents is not a game. Because your Department is failing to meet its legal obligations, I am issuing a new subpoena to compel you to appear before the Committee to answer questions about your agency’s response to the congressional investigation of the Benghazi attack.” (Holding bogus hearings and launching expensive investigations at taxpayer expense also isn’t a game, but Issa seems to have no issues with that.)

Ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) took Issa apart.

In a statement, Rep. Cummings described Issa’s efforts to circumvent the investigative process:

Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell E. Issa took the unprecedented step of issuing a unilateral subpoena demanding that a sitting cabinet Secretary testify before the Oversight Committee—in just over two weeks—and accusing him of a crime. Chairman Issa did not first send a letter making his request, he did not call to determine if the Secretary would be in the country, and he did not hold a Committee vote on his subpoena.

In response to Issa’s subpoena, the Committee’s Ranking Member, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, stated: “These actions are not a responsible approach to congressional oversight, they continue a trend of generating unnecessary conflict for the sake of publicity, and they are shockingly disrespectful to the Secretary of State.”

Issa has disrespected President Obama on a regular basis, so his disrespect of Sec. Kerry is no surprise. Rep. Cummings was correct. This whole contrived Benghazi push is nothing but a desperate publicity stunt. In March, Issa turned off Cummings’ microphone, and fled the room when a show hearing on the IRS blew up in his face. Issa has consistently claimed with no supporting evidence that President Obama is behind the IRS scandal.

Republicans are already disappointed that the mainstream press isn’t falling for their latest attempt to convert a bogus conspiracy theory into a mainstream news story. Republicans are following the exact same playbook that the Clinton administration described in a memo nearly 20 years ago.

They can’t run on Obamacare. They can’t run on the economy. Republicans have no legislative record of accomplishments. They have been reduced to trying to create their own issue to run on in November. Democrats know the game, and they aren’t about to let Issa get away with this stunt.

Issa has abused his power from the moment that he became chairman of the House Oversight Committee. He is wasting taxpayer money and precious resources with publicity stunts and witchhunts. It’s time for Darrell Issa to go.

  1. Issa and his fellow Congress members are absolutely pathetic. Since they didn’t get any mileage out of stopping Obamacare, they have reverted to another issue that didn’t have any traction for them. I have never before in my life seen such a large group of low-IQ buffoons masquerading as politicians. Of course, that also speaks volumes about the people who elected them to waste time, energy, and even money in an effort to discredit this administration and those who serve in it.

  2. issa is one of the reasons why the republican cult is loathed by WeThePeople & why the u.s. congress is least popular than contracting a communicable disease. VOTE BLUE on November 4th 2014

  3. Issa’s Benghazi witch hunt has nothing to do with anything except money & trying to make Obama, Clinton & the Dems look bad. The more Issa can keep this in the news, the more his Tea Party base will donate. If the GOP really cared about Benghazi they would instead be working on solutions to ensure this doesn’t happen again and they would stop slasing security funding.

If the devil was a real person, that person would look exactly like Darrell Issa.

  4. Darrell Issa thinks he’s another Kenneth Starr who wasted $140 million dollars trying to pin the Whitewater scandal on Bill Clinton, got nowhere then nailed him for Monica Lewinsky. It was a sour, pathetic Republican attempt to steal Bill Clinton’s presidency. Serial cheater Newt Gingrich was one of the loudest voices in the room at this time. He basically demolished his own chance at the White House. Since President Obama has a blameless private life, they can’t set him up in this matter and this is what gives them ulcers. Darrell Issa, in doing this is demolishing any chance at the White House. This is what I mean when I call these guys Destructo Cons. Their mode seems to be to get in office, inflict as much damage as they can before being thrown out of office.

  5. The good people in Issa’s district really need to insure the Witch Hunter is tossed in November. They should do it for all Americans so that we waste no more millions on bullshit investigations.

Young people need to vote, and they should be very pissed about the usury being inflicted upon them via student loans and then having no real jobs when they graduate owing tens or hundreds of thousands to these thieves.

  6. It’s PAST time for Issa to go! He’s nothing more than a common criminal and he hasn’t done anything worthwhile during his tenure in the House. Yet another fine example of why we need term limits! Wonder why those people in CA keep reelecting him? They can’t do better than a crook?

  7. All that them republicans can talk about is Benghazi, they NEVER say a thing about the 60 people that were killed at embassies during the W. Bush administration. It was their Congress members that passed the law to thin out security that caused the problem at Benghazi. So if you vote republican please shut up about Benghazi, you don’t know what your talking about.

  8. Like a Twilight Zone episode, apparently Bengazi will NEVER go away —until, presumably, the GOP is in the WhiteHouse. It is an exception to the news cycles that normally carry away stories with a certain ebb and flow like the detritus of the sea. A story that will never die. Bengazi Everlasting.

After all, there are no other problems vexing this country.

  9. Issa is about as ego-maniacal as they come. He really should know better by now than to go up against the honorable Mr. Cummings…..he gets creamed every time….but then again, that’s the very definition of insanity, isn’t it? Doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results. What a tool.

  10. It’s getting to be a contest now on which Republican can waste more taxpayer dollars on nothing: Darrell Issa or Ted Cruz. Darrell should be under investigation, all his money should be taken from him to pay back American taxpayers, and the remainder of his life should be in jail. What a crook!

  11. Remember, for House Republicans, it all about JOBS, JOBS, JOBS for the American people … and killing the ACA … and banning abortion … and minimizing gay rights … and shunning mosques on American soil … and bringing the Bible into the public school classroom … and now Benghazi.

And of course, these same righteous, objective, apolitical legislators will also be investigating the circumstances behind the far-more deadly American embassy attacks that occurred during the Reagan and Bush administrations.
    What? No?

  12. Mr. Issa, I’m California born and raised here. You are an embarrassment to this State.

I am praying every night, that the people in your gerrymandered district will wake up and vote you out of office in Nov.

A California bear, would do less damage in representing our State than you do.

  13. One more thing…

If this is what happens to an American president when an American embassy is attacked, I’d hate to see what happens to one when there is an attack on Americans in the states! Oh, that’s right (9/11) he’s hailed as a hero for keeping us all safe.

  14. Kerry should give him the third finger, ask about his service in combat (none Issa was in the military but not in Vietnam) and move on.
