Republican Heads Explode as Michelle Obama Tells Kansas Grads To Fight Racism and Bigotry

Republican heads will certainly explode after First Lady Michelle Obama told high school grads to stand up against the same bigotry and discrimination that is the bread and butter of the Republican Party.

Here is a video clip:

First Lady Obama said:

And that’s really my challenge to all of you today – when you encounter folks who still hold the old prejudices because they’ve only been around folks like themselves, when you meet folks who think they know all the answers because they’ve never heard any other viewpoints, it is up to you to help them see things differently.

And the good news is that you probably won’t have to bring a lawsuit or go all the way to the Supreme Court.

You all can make a difference every day in your own lives simply by teaching others the lessons you’ve learned here in Topeka.

Maybe that starts in your own family, when grandpa tells that awkward joke at Thanksgiving or your aunt says something about “those people,” and you politely inform them that they’re talking about your friends.

Or maybe it’s when you go off to college and you decide to join a sorority or fraternity, and you ask “How can we get more diversity in our next pledge class?”

Or maybe it’s years from now, when you’re at work, and you’re the one who asks, “Do we really have all the voices and viewpoints we need at this table?”

Or maybe it’s when you have kids of your own one day, and you go to your school board meeting and insist on integrating your schools and giving them the resources they need.

No matter what you do, the point is to never be afraid to talk about these issues, particularly the issue of race, because even today, we still struggle to do that. This issue is so sensitive, so complicated, so bound up with a painful history.

And we need your generation to help us break through – we need all of you to ask the hard questions and have the honest conversations because that is the only way we will heal the wounds of the past and move forward to a better future.

It’s easy to see why Republicans were so up in arms about the First Lady speaking to high school grads in Kansas. Standing up to racism? Telling bigots that homophobia is not cool? What’s a racist and bigoted Republican to do?

That awkward aunt around the Thanksgiving table was certainly getting her info about “those people” from Fox News. Mrs. Obama’s message of tolerance and acceptance went against everything that the Republican Party stands for.

Republicans were outraged because they didn’t want the First Lady to fill the minds of the sacred youth with words like diversity and equality.

Michelle Obama delivered an uplifting message to grads about the future and their role in it, and that is the last thing that the aged, dead, and dying Republican Party wanted the red state youths to hear.

  2. I was there and she received several standing ovations. It was an awesome speech no one booed. Except when they introduced Republican KS Governor Sam Brownback, he received Thousands of people booing.

  3. I love Michelle Obama, because she is a sterling example of beauty, class, dignity, and intelligence. These qualities in her are all the more admirable because she perseveres in spite of all the ugliness the Republicans have hurled at her, her husband, and family members like even her mother and her daughters. They have repeatedly tried and failed to stereotype her as the “angry black woman,” a militant, and a health food Nazi. Her speech was a timely and needed one which challenged the young graduates to do whatever they can to make a difference for the better in fighting bigotry personally or professionally. As petty, mean-spirited, and nitpicking as Republicans are, it’s no surprise that they would object to such an honest, well-intentioned, and truthful speech.

  4. What a pwerful speaker! Intense yet very to the point. What is not to LOVE about FLOTUS and POTUS?

  5. Born and raised in KS here – The first graduating class after 18 yr olds were given the right to vote (since they were being sent to VietNam to die). The first year that politicos began making High School graduation part of their campaign tour – get ’em young and turn them into supporters.

I am impressed Obama went to the belly of the beast and was allowed in.

KS is the land of devolution. It’s evolution peaked in the 70’s but it has been downhill from there (as an adult therapist and advocate for adolescents needing emancipation from abusive parents, I was confronted with judges declaring children property, judges declaring women property of either their parents or the state).

People ask Thomas Frank’s question, “What’s the matter with Kansas?”

Kansas is the land that time forgot – The land that the GOP has made their posterchild of hate, divisiveness and oppression. Bigotry is not just against those who are black. It is generic xenophobia caught in a GIF

  6. This saddens me that the wife of the First Black Afro American President has to go to this level to push a fight that we have been fighting, it seems like forever! I live in Ohio and I still must deal with racism every time I walk out my door! Despite beliefs by some, Racism is alive and well! In order to get by this horrible dream/circumstance that we are so imbedded into, the younger generation must take a stand and set a precedence for the younger ones that come after them! Only my thought and opinion!

  7. This morning I was watching a segment on schools in Philadelphia. The primary discussion was on the reading difference between black and white schools and the reading percentage. I was so broken heart-ed when several young black students spoke on how at their schools they had no library, no desks, and few chairs, while down the street the white students had new everything and when they look in the windows they ask why don’t we get these things? The reading is 60% higher in the white schools, wonder why! The black students say they feel unsure how to approach the white students, to even become friends, in fear of being accepted or taken of less of a person as they feel less smart than the others..IS this what we our breeding today! more hate in our society, this makes so sick, that these young minds are treated like this, ALL CHILDREN DESERVE THE SAME EDUCATION< I PAY MY TAX DOLLARS< I DON'T HAVE CHILDREN..THEY FRICKEN ALL DESERVE THE SAME BOOKS AND DESKS AND LIBRARY…GOP YOU R T BLA…

  8. Its obvious everey school needs to get the same amount of money based on number of kids. Right now its affluent schools get more and the poor just go squeal

  9. This really goes beyond race, bigotry or any of the things on the surface that everyone notices. Look below the surface people, look at the comments that follow this story. Republicans and Democrats alike have been doing this for years, they’ve got us divided up and they’re using any means they can to do it. The republicans are using the economy, now the dems are playing the race card. Am I the only one who gets this? As long as they’ve got us fighting with each other we will never unite to fix the real problem that can be blamed for the problems we face and must get fixed soon people, the dysfunctional mess that is capitol hill.

  10. Right on Cosmic surfer! I just returned from a family reunion in Kansas. You are right!

I love Michele Obama’s forthright talk to the kids in Kansas. I hope they supplant their parents’ bigotry.

  11. I am an advocate of cleaning the congress out completely. Break moneys hold by electing all new people then doing it again in the next terms.

  12. Thanks for the eyewitness report, Shawn O. I loved reading the part about Brownback getting booed. He has f*cked KS up so bad in a short amount of time. The state has a huge budget deficit, its’ credit has been downgraded, and he and his RW buddies underfunded public schools, making the deficit worse because the funding has to be replaced within the next few months. The thing that pisses me off most is that he, like Christie, lied and blamed Pres. Obama for his fiscal ineptitude. It doesn’t take a degree in economics to know that if any level of government spends more that it receives in revenue, there will be a deficit. Brownback gave huge back-to-back tax cuts to Kansas’ wealthiest citizens and big subsidies to corporations and has little to show for it.

  13. This is the way it has always been even though we are celebrating today when children start going to school together. Back then when blacks was goingtotheir own schools they barely had enough books to go around for each student and the ones they had was old and worn from the use of the white students that were thrown away. Which means blacks got the hand me down. They had older school bus with no heat, sometimes the buildings would be a one or two rooms that was for more than one class of students being taught. Then when the law change, they felt the need to get rid of most of the black teachers and keep the white teacher, an the ratio of blacks in the school was still so low that it was and still stupid. White teachers did not know how to teach blackchildren nor did some of them want too and it show through their attitude, so you get poor performance from students.

  14. Joe, calling out racism when you see it is not ‘playing the race card’. Being racist is ‘playing the race card’. So many times folks have remained silent in the face of racism because they feared being accused of ‘playing the race card’. This is one reason racism has thrived in America. Silence gives consent. All it takes for evil to thrive is for good folks to do NOTHING.

It’s the same reason that sexual abuse is still so prevalent today – because folk are afraid or too embarrassed to report it, discuss it, or acknowledge it. Bigots use the phrase ‘playing the race card’ as a weapon to frighten folk into remaining silent and let this disease spread. We all need to start speaking out against it whenever and wherever we encounter it. Only then will folk start to reevaluate their thoughts and actions.

Playing the race card isn’t difficult to do when the whole deck is stacked with racists.

  15. Loved the debate 100 technique of making an assertion next to your point, as though it would slide in. Do people really buy into that?

Yep you do have a whole deck of race cards, every time I hear Al or Jesse speak I remember why you do. Tell me when they will be equally upset about injustice in ANY direction? White on Black, Black on White, or any other combination. Then and only then will you get beyond color and arrive at justice for all.

  16. What youth of today don’t know is when Hitler told the Hit youth to turn in your family members if you hear them make negative remarks about the Third Reich. Those family members were arrested. HMMM

  17. What I find interesting is that if you disagree with what she said or what is reported on this site, even if it is clean and no bullying, it is removed. CENSORSHIP. Wait till we start burning books again because of opposing views to the Liberal agenda

  18. On second thought, your removed post was pretty moronic and just another conspiracy theory. SHouldnt you be out restricting someones vote or beating women?

  19. Your post was removed because it was idiotic and made no sense. Get your money back from homeschooling and remember don’t date your cousin for prom

  20. WOW, name calling and all. What I have always found is that is due to having NOTHING intelligent to say and detracting from the obvious, I am right. I believe in restricting votes, to illegals. What, let me guess you believe they should vote.

  21. WOW My case in point. Disagree with people who have nothing better to do than call people names when they are right and POOF Flag those opinions. My point proven

  22. Are you on meth? I ask you one simple question about illegals determining the outcome of an election and you equate that with name calling?

  23. HEY DJCHEFRON I wouldn’t know those names because voting is a privacy right. There is LIBERAL push to allow illegals the right to vote. I love how some people on here BLATENLY call Republicans racist. If you disagree with Obama or criticize him and that wife of his your labeled a RACIST. I did find it funny how her lunch program is nothing short of a failure. Just FYI some of us out there are what they call a MODERATE.

  24. I disagree that dems are “playing the race card”. You sound like a white Repub. But I do agree YOU have to do something about poor school conditions. Organize a march. Write. white your legislators. Start going to school board meetings Organize, speak out, demand to be heard. I know of what I speak. I am an 80 year old white grandmother. My late husband was on our local school board for twelve years. Dissent about policy makes S.B. members VERY nervous. Next is the Superintendent of Schools. Nothing will change unless YOU MAKE WAVES. GOOD LUCK!!!

  25. @sean:I am confused when you suggest speaking out against a wrong policy by government, in America, compares to NAZISM. No, it is, indeed, EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE!
