Crazy Tea Party Congressman Suggests Only Property Owners Should Be Allowed To Vote

The watchdog group Right Wing Watch recently uncovered video footage of Rep. Ted Yoho (R-FL) telling voters in his district that property owners should be the only ones allowed to vote. In the same video, he also suggested that early and absentee voting is a “travesty” and that he was glad that Florida Governor Rick Scott had taken measures at the time to reduce early voting. The video was taken during Yoho’s campaign in 2012, when he was still a candidate running for his first term in office. Since being elected, Yoho has made a name for himself by making outlandish and inflammatory statements. He is also a member of the Tea Party Caucus in the House of Representatives.

Below is video, courtesy of Right Wing Watch.

His most outlandish statement in the video was the following:

“I’ve had some radical ideas about voting and it’s probably not a good time to tell them, but you used to have to be a property owner to vote.”

However, he also pointed out that he believes far too many people are able to vote in Florida elections via absentee ballots or going to the polls early. After reeling off the numbers of those who utilized early absentee ballots to cast a vote in the previous election, Yoho claimed it was a “travesty.” After praising Scott for his actions, which have since been overturned, Yoho stated that he wished Scott had gone further. Considering that Yoho stated that only property owners should vote, it would seem that he also believes that those given the privilege to vote should only be able to vote on a specific day at a specific location. No exceptions.

Anyway, Yoho is buffoon who has been trying to outclown the other crazies that make up the Tea Party since he hit the scene in 2012. Following in the footsteps of Louie Gohmert, Allen West, Michelle Bachmann, Steve Stockman and Steve King, Yoho has taken every opportunity to say nutty and offensive things in order make his bones and gain entry into that special little club. He’s claimed that Obamacare is racist against white people. He’s jumped on board the birther conspiracy train. He’s advanced the notion that Hezbollah is using our nation’s lax immigration laws to bring over thousands of terrorists.

Therefore, it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that a video surfaced showing Yoho saying that voting is just far too convenient for people and that too many people are given that right. Now, will it hurt him this November? Doubtful. While Yoho dealt with a very tough primary in 2012, he won the general election by 32 points.

  • So, I'm white, and my wife is Chinese-American. We own two houses(I live in one, and she lives in the other). Does she get to vote, or which of us gets to vote, or do neither of us get to vote? There must be further restrictions than property owners.

    • As I understand it from another of these good, gray gentlemen, neither a married woman, nor any of the couple's offspring (though in their majority) who live at home, should vote, as there is supposed to be "one vote per household" exercised "on their behalf by the [male] head of the family". It's true, your wife has her own house, but they wouldn't recognize that, because they have expressly embraced the Blackstone doctrine that "husband and wife are one person, and that one is the husband".

  • This guy needs to go back to sticking needles in livestock.

No; on second thought, he's probably not competent at that either.

  • Crazy Tea Party Congressman..Could have stopped right there. Yes I've heard this many times...from people who constantly bitch about paying property taxes. Most of them are behind on their property taxes and blame the government.

  • This isnt far farfetched. Some of Our glorious founding fathers wanted

You had to be wealthy to be in the congress, as the common peon had no idea.

You had to be a landowner to vote.

Some wanted to stay under King George

Some wanted only the large states to have a say

Some wanted only one house in the congress

The only way they came to a constitution was through compromise. No one person had more say then the other

  • RS, if you're referring to his statement at the end, he says "It used to be you had to be a property owner to vote," which is followed by loud clapping & cheering; if he said anything further, it was obscured by those sounds.

Granted, the way he said it sounds like he approves of the idea, but he didn't come right out and say "I think we should change voting rights so that only property owners can vote."

I'm as against Tea Party nutbags as anyone--fervently--but RS, this was some sloppy reporting, IMO. Please don't undercut your own credibility by enlarging or inflaming statements from people like this! Trust me, the nuts will give you enough ammunition all on their own. Maintain some journalistic accuracy and integrity, please.

If you compare your headline and first sentence with what he actually said, it's clear you're doing a bit of conflating. He did not "suggest" it, nor did he say it should be done; he merely stated a historical fact with an approving tone.

  • I am NOT surprised at the Tea Party member's claim that only property owners should vote.

Watch the Fixed News Channel hustle this thing after losing the 2016 Election.

    Not surprised at all.

  • It's just disgusting to think that I may someday stop to eat or buy gas in his district and rub elbows with his constituents.

  • I would bet that as soon as it was arranged that only (white, male) property owners could vote, early voting, absentee voting, and voting online would all immediately become the norm. As would number of votes/square foot of acreage owned.
