Fox News Gets Busted for Falsely Claiming that Obama Released the ‘New Bin Laden’

judge jeanine

PunditFact busted Fox News’ Jeanine Pirro with a big old “false” for claiming that ISIS leader Abu Bakr al Baghdadi was “released by Obama in 2009.”

On June 14, failed Republican candidate for New York Attorney General in 2006 and now legal analyst and host of Fox’s Justice with Judge Jeanine, Jeanine Pirro blamed Barack Obama for the “New Bin Laden Terrorizing Iraq”, saying he was released by Obama in 2009. Pirro warned her audience in pure Republican fear-mongering style, “Yes indeed, you need to be worried.”

Since this is Fox News, you know where this is going. That’s right: This claim is false.

The “New Bin Laden” was actually released under Bush in 2004 according to the Defense Department. But even if he had been released under Obama, the U.S.-Iraq agreement behind the release took place during the Bush administration.

Pirro’s claim:

As Iraq is being overrun by ISIS – a brutal radical group deemed even by Al Qaeda to be too militant – Fox News host Jeanine Pirro blamed Barack Obama’s feckless foreign policy during the opening segment of Justice with Judge Jeanine Saturday.

The head of ISIS, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, was released by Obama in 2009. As he was leaving Camp Bucca in Iraq, al-Baghdadi warned his American captors: “I’ll see you in New York.”

Judge Jeanine warned America: “Yes indeed, you need to be worried.” The question is, are we listening?

And the facts per PolitiFact’s PunditFact:

Pirro said that Obama released the current head of ISIS from government custody in 2009. The Defense Department said that the man now known as Baghdadi was released in 2004. The evidence that Baghdadi was still in custody in 2009 appears to be the recollection of an Army colonel who said Baghdadi’s “face is very familiar.”

Even if the colonel is right, Baghdadi was not set free; he was handed over to the Iraqis who released him some time later. But more important, the legal contract between the United States and Iraq that guaranteed that the United States would give up custody of virtually every detainee was signed during the Bush administration. It would have required an extraordinary effort to have held on to Baghdadi and there is no evidence that he was on anyone’s radar screen, assuming that he was in custody at all in 2009.

The U.S.-Iraq agreement drove the release of thousands of detainees in 2009, but Obama had nothing to do with that.

We rate the claim False.

So, the people who backed the administration who lied us into invading Iraq and then later, when they failed to get Bin Laden, told us he wasn’t that important, are blaming the President who did get Osama Bin Laden for a release that the DOD (who know more about this than Judge Jeanine) claims took place under Bush.

What you’re seeing here is the result of many years of steadfast commitment to denial, topped off with several recent failed attempts to successfully launch their latest Benghazi conspiracy theory. So now the right is at that point in their program where they blindly point fingers at Obama and scream like children who ate too much sugar.

The truth of the matter is that Bush’s foreign policy was a complete fail. Instead of admitting it and dealing with it, Republicans have spent years trying to toss the blame ball at Obama. Even as they try to blame the current situation in Iraq on Obama, they are denying that Obama said from the beginning that we should not invade Iraq. Our invasion created power vacuums and chaos from which there was no easy and best out. Blaming this President for the fallout of the bad decisions of their president seems to be The Only Republican Position. Gone are the days of honest policy debates and differences in ideology — the modern GOP refuses to acknowledge reality.

Obama didn’t release the “New Bin Laden”. That was Bush. Again. So, if you’re keeping track, that’s two Bin Laden fails for Bush and two Bin Laden wins for Obama.

Republicans will do anything to avoid admitting another foreign policy success for this President — even blaming him for their own president’s actions.

  1. I’m not surprised by this at all. I don’t know if she was purposely lying or not, it could be that she is just clueless like the rest of the GOP.

One thing I am noticing today is that with the exception of the die-hard members of the GOP media, many are coming out and holding Bush and Cheney responsible for the mess in Iraq.

    I am surprised by that.

  2. @TerryLF, oh no she is not mistaken or clueless. She’s the female Ted Cruz, a liar through and through. Research her a bit. Evil evil evil.

  3. Bush and Cheney and the rest of their “Gang” are definitely responsible for the horror that Iraq has become, and they are still trying to protect our oil interests (Cheney’s) by another invasion and use of American troops! Make no mistake – Cheney’s Halliburton and KBR have close ties with the oil industry in Iraq, and the northern militants (ISIS) want an independent northern Iraq with the Kurds to control the oil fields and refineries there. Cheney et al are afraid these militants will move south into the oil fields of which they are a major interest holder. MAKE NO MISTAKE – IT’S ALL ABOUT OIL AGAIN! Cheney et al could care less about Iraqi lives! Just like before in 2003!

  4. I listened to you speech Ms. Pirro. It is compelling and as Jay Carney said and I quote “You are entitled to your own opinions”. As is everyone in this country because of the first amendment of the Constitution. Now, a simple question. Are you getting remunerated for your opinion?
If you are then it it is not free speech anymore… is it?

  5. She out and out lies, and she will neither admit or correct her lie. We’ve really got our work cut out for us.

  6. They all make their living lying through their teeth. How this is still called “Fox NEWS” is beyond me. They are deliberately lying to their audience and making claims that are demonstrably false.

I don’t really know how these people sleep at night. They clearly have no integrity at all.

  7. In the time it took her to serve up this whopper, another 26,453 Fox viewers mounted the Stairway to Conservative Heaven. (Also known as Purgatory, but why spoil the surprise? They’ll find out soon enough.)

  8. THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN CONTROL PEOPLE IS TO LIE TO THEM. You can write that down in your book in great big letters.

  9. She’s a judge right? And a fox news “correspondent”. Every single time I’ve listened to her she’s offered no constructive criticism on anything. She’s a rabid Obama basher. She really hates the President. Spreading anti-Obama propaganda & fear mongering is her niche. That’s it.

  10. Fox has lied to its’ viewers so long that it’s no surprise to me that this is another lie. I notice this in GA and in my city. The rabid Fox viewers think everything Pres. Obama does is wrong, even if they’re benefiting from it. I read a LTE recently and wrote a fact-based response about Congress’s responsibility to oversee federal agencies. The far RW Fox-viewing nuts came out of the woodwork to tell me how wrong I was. I had mentioned in the post that I had taught the material I wrote about and had studied it in college, but it made no difference to them. Some told me I should have never been allowed in any classroom. They never took a class or passed a test to earn a teaching certificate in any subject area. They’re ignorant and proud of it, thanks to Fox News. These people want confirmation of their bias against Pres. Obama, and Fox feeds them red meat to them 24/7, 365 to satisfy their appetite for revenge because they lost two presidential elections in a row.

  11. The important second part of that often used quote is that, while they are entitled to their own opinions, they are not entitled to their own facts.

  12. What you’ve posted shows that the worst kind of deception is when people lie to themselves and believe lies when they fit into their preconceived views. That’s the frame of mind people have who try their hardest not to give President Obama credit for getting Osama Bin Laden. Simple Sarah Palin actually tried to attribute that to GW Bush, and there are others on the far right who tried to attribute to the Navy Seals, apparently ignoring the fact that they took their orders directly from the president. True to form, they are trying to blame the president for something that occurred in 2004, years before he was even elected. As well-read, educated, and well-spoken as you are, the folks who tried to say you were wrong are suffering from a severe case of self-delusion. They are willfully ignorant, determined to believe anything that negates this president, even when it’s proven false. They are also determined to discredit anything good he’s done, even when proven true.

  13. Fox news, and the citizen’s united ruling made me get politically active, for the first time in my 50+ years. It has also made me realize a democracy can’t function when its people won’t speak up!

  14. I am hoping that those republicans that are blaming the right people. Its because they saw the REAL reason Cantor is one runs for office without the party’s blessing. So the party leaders stacked the deck even more obviously and arrogantly than usual. So much so Cantor barely bothered to even campaign, just spread a couple million around to the “right” people and then with a wave of his middle finger didn’t even bother to even show up in his district on election day.
The few that bothered to vote. I read 14% out of about 500,000. Congresses approval rating, I remember thinking at the time. I didnt bother to check it out..the numbers may be off..but not the mood of the whole country. People are sick and tired of the lies, the dirty tricks, the absolute contempt these people show they have for the American voters.
The republicans will say ANYTHING rather than the truth. The people really DO have the power to ignore the real terrorists…and change things.

  15. Seeing you just wandered over here you are in no position to criticize us. No one gets a pass when they screw up. Why NBC chose to follow to follow faux, who knows but that’s how they roll for ratings. That’s why all of them are losing viewers because they all a bunch of B.S and I will say it again if you get your news from TV then you are one step from stupid. Try reading sometime

  16. I’m just waiting for someone to “prove” Bush released those five terrorists in exchange for Bergdahl. Anyone?

  17. What a stupid question but I expect idiocy from a bagger. The state department did not classify the Taliban as terrorist even though they should with the right wing of this country. We do know that Bush released over 500 detainees with 97 returning to fight. That’s 18.2% under bush. In contrast President Obama released 71 with only 3 retuning to fight that’s 4.2%

Go back to briefart, you are out of your league here with your idiotic bovine excrement. Any questions

  18. Apparently, the 90 million he accumulated during the first war in Iraq, by working with Halliburton is not enough for the war criminal cheney.(with a small c because he is a very small man)

  19. The hate and lies coming from the Fox Hates & Lies TV station is unending. The conservative religious christian republican haters and liars at Fox Hates & Lies TV station is sickening and despicable. If you are republican, you are hateful, hate filled, hate mongering liars. But I digress.

  20. Oh, she lies pretty much constantly. She is one mean, nasty, ugly bitch. Another right-wing female who for some reason likes to stare directly into the camera and berate our President as if he’s the hired help and they just caught him going through the jewelry chest. They seem to think he should give a crap what they think when half of them can’t think their way out of a wet paper bag. Fox women are even more vicious and hateful than the men are, and that’s saying a lot.

  21. They like to pretend they aren’t racist because they know it’s socially unacceptable in this day and age (although they are getting closer to losing control of their true racist feelings every day). So they tune in to Fox so they can be given 5 million reasons a day why they should hate President Obama, most of them bald-faced lies. They don’t read or do their own research or engage in intelligent debate because they are incapable. The only time they come to left-wing sites is to argue, insult, and annoy the crap out of everyone with their stupidity, all the while whining and complaining about how mean and uncivil liberals are being to them. Somehow they seem to think this type of behavior means they win! They’ll believe any insane shit the Fox douche-bags can spew at them in order to justify their racism. They’re so obvious you just don’t know whether to laugh or cry. They embarrass this country every damn day.

  22. Ah, the old “liberal media” myth. When did NBC news become a bunch of radical leftists? Doesn’t matter anyway, the entirety of cable and broadcast news is worthless when it comes to reporting the facts. Just about all of the network “journalists” seem to think their job is to host talk shows so Republicans can spew lies as fast as they can, without any fact-checking or follow-up. A good many people in the US don’t have a clue what President Obama has accomplished because the media only seems to care about the “sensational” or “dramatic” stuff he’s done. And a lot of the time that’s just so they can negate them and advance the wingnut narrative of the moment. Yet they think they should be paid millions to be lazy, sloppy and cowardly. Even Jon Stewart has been guilty of this with his endless whining about Guantanamo and talking down to Obama, and he’s supposed to be some liberal icon, according to your side. So please spare us the “But THEY DO IT TOO” crap…it’s so old …

  23. For a woman such as her there is a word..the same word that perfectly describes $arah Palin as well…

  24. The teathugliKKKans are the root of hate and we must pull out these roots at election time or we,are doomed.

  25. beside the fact, she looks like she is a bar girl instead of a women who is supposed to be representing the Christian right..Just what every Christian women should wear to church, cleavage?

  26. If President Bush and Dick Cheney didn’t take the fight to the enemy; they would have brought it to America.

  27. Are you sick and tired of news outlets with an agenda? I suggest AlJazeera America. Go there for the real “we report, you decide.”

  28. If this type of reasoning makes you feel any better more power to you. The fact is that Iraq had nothing to do with the people who attacked us. After Bush and Cheney lied to the country and got us into this quagmire now we do have to worry about folks from that country attacking us. Nothing partisan here just the bare facts.

  29. Just like many of my republican friends who ONLY watch Fox News there are are many liberals who only watch MSNBC. I believe that anyone wants a more complete picture of any situation, one must get their information from as many media outlets as possible. And yes this includes FOX news. I confess that when watching FOX there is an easy way to know when they are lying. You know it when you see their lips moving.

  30. The Fox Entertainment character Jeanine Pirro reads her lines from a prompter and acts in whatever way gets her approval from her bosses, like a pro wrestler (except that they have a job that requires great strength and ability in addition to acting). Fox has declared in court that they are not news, which explains a lot. If Pirro’s head spontaneously exploded tomorrow, they would simply put another cipher in her place to read the same lines in the same way — or in whatever ‘character’ they decided would keep their audience of mostly old men glued to their boob tubes.
